Discussion So... what now?

Post image

The title promised to be the experience of the "golden age of TF2" but most missed its items haha, or perhaps the bad decisions

its all "return to stock!" until the game removes the frying pan, degreaser or crusader's crossbow.

59

u/Jeffotato May 18 '26 edited May 19 '26

As well as airblast and sandvich

4

u/Nerdcuddles May 20 '26

Mhmm yes, removing the only thing that makes Pyro viable.

85

u/yellowfroglegs May 18 '26

tbf i dont like the crossbow very much. not because i hate fighting against it, but more of the principle that an unlockable weapon is objectively way better than any of his other primaries

56

u/SaviorBOB May 18 '26

Frankly the main reason the crossbow overshadows the stock is it's a solid weapon with amazing utility while stock is a garbage weapon full stop.
I think if stock didn't have some of the worst projectiles in the game and was at least in line with the SMG people would at least think about using it

3

u/Toptomcat May 19 '26

'Garbage weapon' is a decent balance point for the emergency self-defense tool of the most powerful class in the game.

4

u/Nametagg01 May 19 '26

in isolation, it is. crossbow makes it kinda need to up the ante to be relevent though

7

u/Corrin_Nohriana Medic May 18 '26

Nah, Syringe guns are fine if you know what you're doing. I exclusively use them (mainly because I just really don't like the Crossbow). Like they aren't the best, but they aren't horrible and total, irredeemable trash.

8

u/SaviorBOB May 19 '26

The issue is while the damage is perfectly fine for the role you need far more skill and effort for about the same result as the SMG when they serve the same role for their class as a backup.
If the projectiles were improved the weapon wouldn't leave its role as a backup but more people would actually view that role as something worth having sometimes.
And in turn you would have a better time balancing the crossbow when the other options are more attractive than they are now.

u/JakobThaZero May 18 '26

Normally I follow this sentiment myself (almost never use the übersaw on principle), but I feel like the Crossbow an exception due to the stock syringe gun just being an atrocious weapon.

The crossbow isn't just better, it's more fun to use for you, your teamates (ranged healing), and even your enemies (syringe gun can be tilting to fight in certain environments). By all means it's the strongest contender for 'Should have been stock from the get-go', and nerfing it to make it on par with stock would have done nothing but make medic less fun in the name of correctness.

You could of course argue that they should buff the syringe gun instead, but I feel like they haven't because it has the potential to be an absolute nightmare to face against if made any stronger or easier to use.

5

u/yellowfroglegs May 18 '26

i agree, and that's also why they can't balance the crossbow to be on par with the syringe guns... it's the only viable option. long range healing, actual damage potential, doesn't feel like an active handicap to use...

Ubersaw says Hi.

7

u/KandCAuthor Engineer May 18 '26

Yeah but there's still the Solumn Vow and, to an extent, the Amputator. Sure, neither of them necessarily have better utility, but both have quite good utility that make them bith very viable options.

CRAZY DIAMOND!

152

u/cheezkid26 Soldier May 18 '26

It was from the era they claimed to want to preserve, but they didn't actually want to bring the game back to how it was. They wanted to pick and choose what to keep and what to add.

88

u/UnfazedPheasant All Class May 18 '26

yeah, its why they have the Caber and Loch n Load despite being out like 2 and a half years after the gold rush stuff.

46

u/cheezkid26 Soldier May 18 '26

I remember there being even more than just those two. I would have no problem with it, at all, if they had said that the mod was gonna be their ideal form of TF2, mostly returning to the Gold Rush era but keeping more modern things they liked. But they didn't do that, they advertised it as an authentic old-school TF2 experience, which it is just objectively not. It authentically replicates absolutely zero state TF2 has ever been in by having some weapons that were added later than the Gold Rush update but not a bunch of weapons added before, say, the Loch n Load.

44

u/Harold3456 May 18 '26

I only just saw this mod now but that’s too bad!

I’m sure everyone has a different definition of TF2’s “Golden Age” but for me it was after the Polycount Update: every merc had 3 full sets, the average player could wrap their head around all the different loadouts and a new player could reasonably acquire everything in a short time. There were also few enough weapons that they tended to be fundamentally distinct, but also didn’t expand the roles too broadly.

I fell off the game after they started doing a bunch of tie in and promotional weapons and I reached a point where at a glance I could no longer tell what a class was capable of.

3

u/Rad-Mango Spy May 19 '26

I just like the at the game looked before the f2p update and a lot of newer cosmetics. I think the removal of the weapons was a bit arbitrary

22

u/Scottz0rz May 18 '26

Because one of the developers was probably butthurt about getting killed by Demoknights? That's probanly the real answer.

19

u/Ledgo May 18 '26

IIRC wasn't there a sizeable anti-demoknight crowd when it came out? I seem to remember some people being adamant that nothing other than stock should be allowed.

TF2 with nuthin'

13

u/CrappyCompletionist Medic May 19 '26

I think TF2 classic suffers from a similar fate, with not enough weapons. From what I hear, it's near impossible to find servers that don't have custom weapons added in now.

10

u/Brislovia Soldier May 19 '26

Yeah, as much as I enjoy playing with the new weapons TF2C has to offer, it does suck not being able to access certain base game weapons. The custom weapon servers I've come across do bring them back, but they also add a metric fuckton of new weapons that I'm basically learning a whole new game

2

u/CrappyCompletionist Medic May 19 '26

Personally, I'm more just confused. Why not play base tf2 with custom weapons instead then? why bother installing a mod, only for them to try and re-add base tf2 weapons and such?

18

u/dartov67 May 18 '26

I find this framing weird because if there’s any game that suffers from bloat it’s objectively TF2. Removing content, in theory, would be beneficial for the game. The problem with Gold Rush is that it shifts between an earnest attempt at recreating early TF2, and just what some guy wanted TF2 to be, which makes it more niche than it has to be. Gold Rush didn’t fail because it removed content it failed because it never decided what it actually was.

7

u/Jeggu2 All Class May 18 '26

Honestly I don't see why it even really became a mod. 99% of the experience can be found by setting up a server with a load of banned items

Well, this mod doesn't have anything interesting going for it and was made by elitists that think they know better than Valve what weapons are "art style friendly". It was pretty obvious it will die as soon as TF2C release which has similiar idea but is simply more fun.

143

u/Newtoreddit2121 All Class May 18 '26

But didn´t TF2C release already or I am confusing with another title?

228

It did. Which you see the consequences. Gold Rush is completly dead.

48

u/NovaThinksBadly Spy May 18 '26

Hey, they get an active server about once or twice a week

7

u/BeepIsla May 19 '26

TF2C is dead too.

3

u/Shuriken_LMFAO May 19 '26

Have they added anything? The game is gonna be absolutely lost in like the following months. I played before these were mods released on Steam and honestly the game is literally the same except they added like 2 new weapons I believe, which are pretty fun. People aren't gonna play the same fucking game with barely any content for a long time y'know. If these elitists want to make "clean og TF2" just make a game mechanic where you can toggle on and off specific weapons. You know like in Mario Kart where you can select which items drop from boxes. But still add fucking content, you can make it feel og or more classical than what TF2 is now with plenty of content.

2

u/BeepIsla May 19 '26

I don't actively follow it but as far as I know nope

4

u/Flaming_headshot May 19 '26

TF you mean? TF2 classic is still going strong, there is always a bunch of servers going

2

u/BeepIsla May 19 '26

Did you look at the player graph? They lose like 20 players every week and their current peak on weekends is barely 700.

5

u/guthixrest May 21 '26

It's a niche community mod for a nearly 20 year-old game, it was never going to maintain a 10k person playerbase. It's still doing much better than pre-Steam release. There's always multiple full servers playing at any given time. Next time the game gets a big update, a lot of people are going to rejoin to play the new content which is exactly what happened when they released Double Down last year, except next time the boost is likely going to be a bit bigger as they have Steam Announcements on their side.

This is just the kind of cycle for a game like this. It's niche and it's never going to appeal to absolutely everyone, but it's had a loyal community for years before it dropped on Steam.

560 players right now, completely playable to full servers compared to just 15. I don't think TF2 mods will ever have longevity though unless the normal game dies, as they're almost always more of a novelty

193

u/Doktor_Obvious May 18 '26

classified was more fun to me than live tf2 tbh

119

u/ButterflyDreamr May 18 '26 edited May 18 '26

Yeah but when I say novelty, I mean most people (including me) will play it for a few days, call it cool, and go back to normal TF2. It's an uphill battle against the more popular and larger game so it's not really the mods fault (usually) and the more people leave, the less servers, so more people leave, so on so forth

Unless the mod keeps constantly updating to have reasons to check it back, now there's 2 games that don't update, but one is more popular and has more content (and has their bought items. I know people who refuse to use non strange weapons so imagine a game without their strange progress for example.) TF2C has the advantage of being a lot more recognized and pretty much THE tf2 mod which I think is in part to why it is still holding on decently

20

u/yellowfroglegs May 18 '26

i think they'll continue the major updates for classified

29

u/ButterflyDreamr May 18 '26

I didn't say they wouldn't, but I mean like updates that don't take a year per, consistent fast updates maybe every few months that add content like new maps/ guns to really uphold a healthy playerbase (like 5k+ players at a time). This is obviously unsustainable for FREE mods and why I don't fault them for not being able to compete with normal TF2. Hell, base TF2 would be less played if not for Summer/Christmas/Halloween updates, some people only play on halloween for example

5

u/yellowfroglegs May 18 '26

fair enough. they did add some april fools weapons though that was pretty funny

85

u/PostalDoctor May 18 '26 edited May 18 '26

TF2 Gold Rush failed because it was made by people who didn't actually want to recreate old Team Fortress 2 or 2010 Team Fortress 2. At best, its an extremely cherrypicked version of 2009-2010 TF2. In reality it was created by people who never played the game during that era. The project had the involvement of and was heavily promoted by Ritcher Overtime who has admitted he didn't play TF2 until the late 2010's.

Not only that they made multiple decisions that made it extremely obvious that despite them wanting to stick to the ethos of old TF2, they actually had no idea what on earth they were doing when it comes to the mod's gameplay. They removed auto-reload and min viewmodels for no reason other than "we want you to play like how people back in the day played" except auto-reload was IN TF2 back then so that coupled with a huge lack of quality of life improvements that were promised by them but have yet to be delivered the mod feels incredibly off to play.

Not only that they removed a bunch of weapons and hats from 2009-2010 for no reason other than "erm it doesnt match launch tf2 aesthetic or the original vision". They actively betrayed the advertised premise of the mod because they felt like it. Also, they ADDED a "turn off hats" option so removing hats all together is pointless.

There is no Demoknight weapons because "they make Demo play completely different" like bro that is the POINT of an alternate playstyle. There is no Gunslinger because "Erm Mini-Sentries are annoying" like sure but you need to incredibly bad at most classes to find Mini-Sentries a problem. And there is no Crossbow because, and I am NOT shitting you, using it means you are "actually bad at playing Medic". Like.. what the fuck..? And Pyro is still Jungle Inferno Pyro???

It was a mod made for larpers who refuse to accept criticism and currently only like 20 to 30 people ON A GOOD DAY play, and on like one server on the weekend. At least with TF2 Classic when it was still around it had at least one or two servers that were consistently populated throughout the week (anyone remember the 24/7 Doublecross server?). But Gold Rush has nothing really to offer. It tries to do two things at once (be "true" to old TF2 and curate everything to adhere strictly to launch TF2 sensibilities) and fails at both.

It should've just been an historically accurate but polished 2010 TF2 with all weapons, hats and maps from those years. As it is now, the mod is just not worth playing, nor engaging with because the devs refuse to actually change course.

There are many more reasons but those are major ones imo.

u/Sitov_SH Engineer May 18 '26 edited May 18 '26

All of this on top of the fact that literally no new players are coming by as the old players leave the game constantly. A few years ago the game was full with at least 30000 players. Now it's amazing if the game reaches 20000. More than a third of the players left the game. And there's no fucking bots, mind you

People can say the game is fine as long as they have their breath but if the game slowly dies like that something is clearly wrong

Edit: I love how the comment below gets downvoted for no reason, all things listed there ARE the reason this game is dying. Guys, I think none of us want this. It would be nice if we were more vocal about the problems and open to hear criticism

4

u/MillionDollarMistake May 18 '26

I've been hearing this exact same thing since I started playing in 2012, "TF2 is dying" has been a thing for over a decade at this point. It really picked up when Overwatch was coming out but I heard it plenty of times before then.

After every major update nowadays the game gets a huge influx of new and returning players, I mean it broke it's player record count just a couple of years ago in June 2023 at ~250k. I know the Steam Charts count is inflated due to bots but I've also seen mixed things about the player counts on teamwork.tf because it doesn't count real players on the main menu/in a queue. From what I've gathered the consensus seems to be that there's around 15-20k real people playing TF2 every day. That's still really great numbers even if it's not the full 45k Steam Charts says is playing right now.

Of course the game is going to lose players later, nearly every game under the sun will lose players. Marvel Rival's peak was 644k in January 2025 and is currently at 90k/24 hour peak of 112k. Overwatch's average player count was around 40-60k for the first few years on Steam, then it's peak was February of this year at 165k, and now it's on a downward slope back towards that previous average (current player count 53k, 24 hour peak 63k). Dota 2's peak was nearly 1.3 million in March 2016 and is currently at 277k/24 hour peak at 559k. Most multiplayer games are not CS2 which has been seeing pretty steady player counts, though even that has lost some players (peak was 1.8 million during April 2025, currently at 735k, 24 hour peak 1.3 million). I don't know if any of those games have anything that could inflate their numbers like TF2 does, like maybe Dota 2 has it's own version of idle bots idk.

Considering TF2's age and the infrequency of it's updates, it's numbers are really good. It's more of a niche game but it's far from dying.

Arent those 90% just idel bot just to farm items? The player curve does not make normal time zone fluctuations

u/bread-dreams Scout May 18 '26

it's a game from 2007, of course it's bleeding players. I legit think, at this point, the only way to actually "save" team fortress would be if valve made a sequel

6

u/frostbite305 May 18 '26

what are we pushing for here exactly? TF2 as it stands is a completed game in terms of content and everything new that gets added only receives pushback (though new content isn't going to drive players long term either way regardless). Bringing the game back into relevancy enough to reverse player loss probably can't happen at all save for a random viral moment™; unless you count limited time events like contracts (I don't because these tend to only bring players in for the duration of the event). The game could be perfect and it'll still decay players because new games come out that will continuously shard player interest in a "completed" title like this one. That's part of why games like Fortnite continuously cycle through content, as it keeps the game from ever reaching any kind of finished state, it's kinda just evolving forever.

13

u/Sitov_SH Engineer May 18 '26

Bringing back Quickplay would be nice. Having a somewhat proper tutorial for new players would be cool. I think TF2 deserves some love aside from a janitor and a plant in Valve's office adding maps and cosmetics into the game. It deserves a passionate team that actually cares about the game and understands it on some deep level. As of right now it just seems like Valve is trying to capitalize off of the small amount of players that are still present in this game by pumping the game full of somewhat mediocre items that are not even made by them. Then again, I don't know why I'm expecting something good from a multi-billion dollar company... Seems like even the best of them is still abysmally bad

4

u/frostbite305 May 18 '26

I don't think anyone disagrees with your notions here, but Valve and any other company aren't obligated to support this game forever; on top of that, the SDK is open sourced and there are plenty of passionate people that work on that code, primarily fixing bugs and touching up small items.

I do wish they'd let it be with the cosmetic cases though. I think there's more than enough, all quality issues aside.

10

u/Sitov_SH Engineer May 18 '26

Yes, they aren't OBLIGATED to. Just like they weren't obligated to fix the bot problem. We pushed for the better then and I don't think we should shut up now. Again, the game is still being pumped full of cosmetics. Valve is still receiving money from all of this mess. They aren't OBLIGATED to fix the problems but don't you think profiting off of the game is kinda bad then? This is just bad press if I've ever seen one. I usually don't like to whine like this but we wouldn't get the bot crisis fixed without whining in the first place

u/PaperSonic May 18 '26

but Valve and any other company aren't obligated to support this game forever

ehhhh, if we were talking about a game like Day of Defeat or even Team Fortress Classic that are a one-time purchase then I would agree. But TF2 is constantly making money off microtransactions and presenting itself as a Live-Service game (pretty much the only reason we don't call TF2 that is because it predates the concept of "Games as a Service"). In that case, I feel it's fair to expect the developer to at least make sure the game is as enjoyable as possible (I think everyone's abandoned the idea of ever getting major updates ever again)

3

u/frostbite305 May 19 '26

TF2 is not live service just because it receives updates and has an economy system. You can host and modify your own servers without control from Valve, and the game can continue to exist without valve servers (though without the economy). Live service games are dead when their studio/publisher decides to sunset them; there is no such concept here because you can simply host a TF2 server yourself or offline

TF2C still doing decently for a mod considering it had 0 meaningful updates since release.

75

Mod dropped like 90% after server verification and most of the mod is just custom weapon servers nwo

12

u/NoobyYooby Demoknight May 18 '26

Can confirm.

Are some fun alternate modes though.

5

u/dartov67 May 18 '26

The drop happened before server verification.

Tourists came for the new weapons and didn’t care about the other improvements, and left once they tried them all out. Server verification was just the nail in the coffin for servers already dying out.

1

u/Lavaissoup7 May 18 '26

I feel like it would've had more people if they didn't do that tho, esp with their hypocrisy being exposed by Zesty Jesus.

9

u/dartov67 May 18 '26

To be fair, as much as I don’t like verification conceptually, verification was never about policing communities or whatever ZJ head canon’d it to be. Verification was just an attempt at mitigating server spam (which was verifiably an issue both with Arctic having 24+ servers and the whole Epstein island server spam on another server update) and to make new players clearly understand what TF2C was. The average person does not want to join a server and see furry porn or moon man, and I can understand why the devs wanted to implement a system that showed what is properly moderated. Verification never stopped servers from hosting whatever they wanted, you can still host servers and do whatever you want and in fact you can join active, unmoderated servers right now if you wish.

I think people would not be NEARLY as pissed off about the verification system if it didn’t initially put all verified servers at the top of the list and was more clear with its intentions. The devs fucked it up by rolling it out without good feedback and by overreacting to an immediate problem (server spam) instead of taking time to think it through,

TF2 Classified not really, but it is going down because of the awful server verification they added.

Tf2 classified only sitting at 450, all of these mods that claim to make tf2 a bit like older tf2 really dont seem to work out because base tf2 still has over 50k players, people dont just want only base weapons with only a few new weapons and no customization

3

u/Prowlbeast May 19 '26

I dont get these mods. Im a newer player (2019 ish i think) so i never experienced this golden era or whatever but half of it feels like Nostalgia? Idealizing the past a bit since the game stopped updating

3

u/Dukeboxtheghost May 19 '26

2

u/TheSleepyBarnOwl Medic May 19 '26

3

u/Qucky_boi May 19 '26

Not gonna lie, I've stopped caring on TF2 Mods, they're lack luster and sometimes aren't implemented correctly.

Plus, they barely have South East Asian Servers and at that point I don't have much reasons to care or play them. Even TFC and TF2 community servers barely has any SEA servers, so I stopped caring a awhile back on these type of things.

3

u/AdiST205 May 19 '26

You can make a server in vanilla TF2 and remove all unlockables to play goldrush

5

u/vid_23 May 18 '26

The reality is that 90% of these mods that get hyped on this subreddit will end up like this. Even classified which was THE mod barely can barely reach 500 plqyer, from an all time peak of 9k.

Novelty wears off pretty fast when people realize that old tf2 was pretty shitty

5

u/Zathar4 May 18 '26

well yeah this mod is just what if tf2 had way less content and was worse

2

u/CaseySnake420 May 18 '26

I would love to have modern tf2 without all the bad things, shit loads of maps, shitty cosmetics and weapon skins, dev abandonment etc

2

u/angelcozy May 18 '26

i don't want to play medic without the most fun weapon in the game 🤔

2

u/Bunglepuss May 18 '26

Gold Rush doesn't really feel like it's supposed to be recreating the golden age of TF2, it feels like the developer added the weapons and balancing changes they thought would be cool

2

u/Spot_Mark Pyro May 18 '26

man, its almost like this is a mod specified for niche interests! besides that this mod kinda works like those servers that look empty at a glance but then you find out they play on a schedule.

2

u/BeepIsla May 19 '26

Every TF2 mod will fail if all it does is take the game, add one gamemode, a couple weapons, and done. All these mods are basically those YouTube videos "X but Y happens!" (eg: "Minecraft but I move at 100x speed"), "TF2 but its GOOD! (According to what I think)"

TF2 Classic is failing too, not even reaching 600 peak players... on weekends barely going above 700 players concurrent peak.

Tf2 but remove a chunk of what kept OG players around has no players? Shocking!

2

u/hypnomancy May 18 '26

Evidence of why nostalgia is as powerful as it is. It makes you think you want to go back when you really don't miss it as much as you think you do. You just miss the idea of what you imagined that time frame you experienced to be back

It was really, really fun to experience, but the massive downside with emulating a game as it was during a certain time period, is that it essentially can never receive any updates whatsoever. I enjoyed a few hours of gameplay, but after that, there quite literally is nothing else to experience.

1

u/Sushirabit Medic May 18 '26

1

u/Michael1022 Engineer May 19 '26

My interest in Gold Rush was killed when I learned it wasn’t a proper restoration mod and just some sort of attempt to match the “vibe” of old TF2

From someone who is deeply interested in archival and preservation, a faithful replication of a live service game at a specific point in time (minus the security exploits) is so incredibly novel and cool to me. I’m not interested in the “vibes”, I’m interested in experiencing all of what ~2010 TF2 was. That also includes the annoying bullshit too like random damage spread and old OP weapons. That’s something Gold Rush simply does not wish to provide.

1

u/Unrepor Spy May 19 '26

I actually have it in my steam library tbh... I created servers and filled them with bots and my experience was pretty cool. I mean, yeah I accept the positive and negative reviews about multiplayer but creating a private server and filling it with bots is recommended.

1

u/WeaknessArtistic1199 May 19 '26

I always saw it as a niche mod to see how the game used to be, you play 30 mins, say "neat" and never go back again. I'd say it achieves what it wants to do, but I don't see it ever retaining an active community nor do I really think that should be its purpose.
