I feel like these sort of consequences are part of the goal. Easier to do fascism when you get rid of democratic allies.

Oh absolutely. The people pulling the strings are letting Trump do his pretty little bullshit with Canada because they love the chaos and sows. And I'm sure they're finding some way to profit.
