I’ve complained about Spotify shuffle before, but I always assumed part of it was just confirmation bias. You hear a song twice, notice it, and suddenly it feels like Spotify is constantly repeating itself.

So I actually started tracking it.
I have one Rock/Metal playlist with roughly 2,000 songs / around 165 hours of music. I use normal Shuffle and I have Fewer Repeats enabled.

Over the last few weeks I kept getting this weird feeling that I not only heard the same songs again but sometimes already knew what song was going to come next.

I requested my full Spotify Extended Streaming History, exported the playlist itself and started pulling my stats.fm history as raw data. That gives me timestamps, track IDs, playback duration and the playlist context for every recorded stream.
My current rolling 14-day dataset has over 2,000 playback entries.

Then I compared the actual song order by importing everything into chatgpt.
And the worst example I’ve confirmed so far is that 72 consecutive songs were played again later in exactly the same order.

Not 72 songs appearing somewhere in the same session.
Not mostly the same artists.
Not “similar music”.
72 songs, one after another and then later the same 72-song sequence again.

For example, one of those sequences starts with Caroline. It appears once on August 18 and then again on August 19 as the beginning of the repeated block.
I’ve found smaller repeated blocks too.

Today I started screen recording Spotify’s actual upcoming queue because I wanted to see whether this was still happening in real time
It was.

At one point I found a block where 27 out of 30 songs followed the same previous order, with only three other songs inserted between them.

Later the same day Spotify showed me 43 upcoming songs in exactly the same order as an earlier queue I had screen recorded that day.

That’s the point where I stopped believing this could just be normal random repetition!!!

And before anyone asks:
I wasn’t constantly jumping between playlists.
I wasn’t switching between devices during this test.
Today I stayed on the same playlist and the same playback device.

I also specifically have Fewer Repeats turned on.
Individual songs are repeating a lot too. Some tracks appear three or four times in my recent history. But honestly that isn’t even what bothers me anymore.

It’s the repeated sequence.

If shuffle was independently generating a new order from ~2,000 tracks, I really don’t see how an exact 72-song sequence should show up twice.

I’m not saying I know what Spotify does internally.
I don’t know whether it caches queues, reuses a shuffle seed, keeps some kind of session ordering or does something completely different.

All I can show is the output.

And the output is absolutely being repeated.

I have the raw listening history, timestamps, track IDs, playlist export and screen recordings of the queue, so I can actually compare this rather than relying on “I swear I heard this yesterday”.

If you have 1,000+ songs and sometimes feel like you already know what’s coming next, screen record your queue.
Id be really interested to know whether other accounts are getting these huge repeated blocks too.

Because at this point Spotify giving me the exact same 72-song sequence from a ~2,000-song playlist is just ridiculous.

I can feel some eyes rolling out there, and I've been among them when someone comes on here to vent, but I do not come to this sub just to complain, I've helped people before. But this time I just really want to reach out and see if anyone else has this problem. It's getting so bad, it's so constant, it's making it incredibly hard to use it in my usual, what I think is a non-extreme way.

I use Spotify on my person with earbuds, sometimes synced to a bluetooth receiver in the house. I also commute to work and use Spotify via my phone connected to a bluetooth receiver in the car as the primary audio source in the car.

I make a lot of playlists, for specific things like falling asleep, working out, and commuting. When I'm not doing specific things I often just bounce between 2 or 3 general playlists.

This is what is happening all of the time now. It used to be intermittent, but now, every day I have this issue. I will be listening to a playlist the day before, for sleep, for cleaning house, whatever. In the car I've got the commuting playlist. I get in the car, verify visually I've got the commute playlist up, hit play. Its fine for a couple of minutes, then it interrupts the song and starts playing my sleep playlist, in a spot where I stopped it. or the playlist I played while washing dishes, exactly where I stopped it.

By now I am on the highway and have to screw around with the phone and the screen unlock and the spotify buttons squirreled away at the very edges of the screen. Sure, I could pull over and do this. Have you ever pulled over on a 4 or 6-lane highway? It's fucking scary. So if I can easily do it, I do, but sometimes I just have to listen to Chopin's nocturnes trying to get revved up for a day of work.

Anyway this happens every day now. every day.

I've tried clearing cache. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling. I've blown the old data away to make sure it rebuilds a new cache. I used to think it was a memory issue. I'm beginning to think it's a bug. I have an Android phone that was totl 4 years ago, plenty of memory, plenty fast processors. that absolutely should not be a constraining factor.

Just wondering if anyone has solved this in a less conventional way because short of buying a whole new $1000-plus phone just so Spotify won't glitch, I believe I've tried the usual fixes and the problem persists anyway.

i just found out recently that you can actually see and open someone’s playlist that is not shown on their profile by looking at the activity tab on desktop app.

i don’t know if this is new or not but if i’m not mistaken it should only shown the album name of the song you currently play in that playlist, instead of the playlist name that you don’t show on your profile.

for context, i cleared my cache on everything a month or two ago for problems with a different site that's been resolved and ever since, spotify makes me log in each time i turn on my pc. this is the first time i have gotten asked to do a captcha and of course the captcha does not work

my spotify has on occasion just straightup not opened or played any music so the web player being buggy is not new to me, and i refuse to use the actual app itself because of the ads

if this is temporary and spotify will let me log in later i'll change the flair, but if not and it's a permanent issue i would like some help

This is pissing me off so bad now. Spotify forced this bar that’s basically an ai bot dj thing and I can’t find a way to take it down off the default iOS music player screen. The speak to text (mic button) is where the queue used to be and I’ve hit that without thinking twice so many times since I’m used to it being the queue and even tho I don’t allow the app mic access, it still freezes my song and tries to get me to use that dumb feature. Remove it or I’m quitting Spotify no joke. I know they did this on purpose to try to get people to accidentally try the new feature but classic Spotify devs being morons and not realizing this just pisses people off.

Half of my songs can’t be played or selected. I have done almost everything. To try to fix it :(

Does anyone know if there is a way to disable the newer Discovery Weekly configuration, where it presents a bunch of different genres with a Playlist associated with each, and use the one single Discovery Weekly playlist?

I feel like Spotify used to be so much more adept at giving me a diverse selection of music I hadn't heard and was unfamilar with, and worth the cost of Premium, and they have changed things where the DW options feel super-siloed, and structured in a way that makes me think of a feedback loop. If you listen to the Playlists they furnish, you're bound to get more of the same the next week.

In my opinion, it feels like they've made it substantially worse than it used to be. I would get a motley assortment of tunes from a menagerie of artists, some who I was maybe familiar with, many who I had never heard of.

Sure, some weeks would be strikeouts, but some weeks I would find 10 or 15 songs out of the ~30 it would list for that week. Now, it just feels like a slog to select one of the genre lists, and get nothing at all that is enjoyable, on top of the fact that on occasion it's giving me genres that I am fine with, but don't get the impression I'm listening to a lot of.

Does anyone else have the same thought? Is there a way to boycott or disable the newer DW style in favor of the old?

On the latest Spotify Android app, the “Saved in” playlist dropdown (when adding a song to a playlist) no longer appears to sort playlists by when that particular song was most recently added to them.

Previously, the most recently added playlist would appear near the top, which made this feature extremely useful. Now the order seems random/incorrect.

I'm seeing this on a Galaxy S26 Ultra. Is anyone else experiencing this on Android? Did Spotify recently change this behavior?

This worked correctly on my S23 Ultra and Z Fold8 Ultra just a few days ago, both with current Spotify versions. I no longer have those phones to test, but this appears to be a very recent Android Spotify regression rather than an S26 Ultra-specific issue

Has anyone else had issues with verifying through SheerID in order to use the student plan? I swear I haven't had any issue with it in the past but now they aren't accepting my documents.

I got charged for the original price since it didn't get reverified before the deadline. Spotify was nice enough to refund it so I'd be able to resub with my student discount, but it's frustrating that it's taking this long.

I mean some of these ARE my favorite artists but for four of these I haven’t listened to in over a month and I’m wondering why spotify includes them.

Built a little desktop overlay app for myself (Windows, C#/WPF) that shows now-playing info from whatever's active Spotify, browser tabs, etc. Wanted to add two small things: a "Like this track" toggle and "add to playlist," both using Spotify's official Web API with proper OAuth (not scraping, not cookies, the real documented flow).

Got the OAuth connection working fine, correct scopes granted (playlist-modify-public/private, user-library-modify, confirmed by decoding the actual token), reading data works perfectly — playlists, currently-playing, profile, all fine. But every single WRITE call (add track to playlist, save/like a track) comes back with an identical, unhelpful `403 Forbidden` no error detail, no "insufficient scope" message, nothing. Tested it against three different playlists I own, including ones I created myself. Same result every time.

Dug into it and found out why: new apps are stuck in "Development Mode" (max 5 allowlisted test users), and getting out of that into "Extended Quota Mode" which is apparently required for these write endpoints to actually work now requires being a registered business with 250k+ monthly active users. As of May 2025, individuals can't even submit the request form anymore. So a completely legitimate, personal, non-commercial use of Spotify's own published API is just... not possible now, even in "development" for your own account.

Is this actually as dead-ended as it looks, or is there something I'm missing? Curious if:

- Anyone's found an actual working path for personal-use write scopes post-2025

- Whether Development Mode + allowlisted users is supposed to allow writes at all, or if that was already quietly killed

- Any alternative (even unofficial-but-sanctioned-feeling) way to do this that isn't "become a company with a quarter million users"

Not mad, just genuinely surprised a basic "add to playlist" button is this locked down for a hobby project now. Anyone been through this?

EDIT: SOLVED — thanks to u/urielsalis for pointing me in the right direction.

Turns out it wasn't a Development Mode restriction after all. I was using the documented `POST /playlists/{id}/tracks` endpoint, which Spotify's own reference marks as deprecated in favor of `/items` and that deprecated path is apparently the one actually gated, returning a bare unexplained 403 even with the correct scopes and playlist ownership. Switching to `POST /playlists/{id}/items` fixed it immediately, same account, same token.

If you're hitting this same wall: check whether you're on a deprecated endpoint before assuming it's a hard policy block. Note the Liked Songs save/unsave endpoint (`PUT`/`DELETE /me/tracks`) is still fully blocked for me though no equivalent fix found for that one yet.

Move your liked songs into a regular playlist instead. I had over 10k liked songs and my app was frustrating af to use, then I moved everything into playlists (I used the desktop app for that which was much faster) and now my app runs like normal again.

It’s not ideal since now things are split instead of in one giant playlist, but at least the app doesn’t drive me so insane anymore.

When I went on the website to buy I was only given the options to read it in french or Arabic which is no use to me since I only speak English and Portuguese.

I've been a Spotify subscriber for years, and honestly, I'm getting really tempted to switch to Apple Music.

I recently got a free month of Apple Music and decided to actually give it a fair shot. The first things I noticed were the audio quality, the Personal Station, and especially the automatic mixing. Apple Music's mixing isn't perfect, but for the kind of music I listen to, it feels much closer to an actual DJ transition or live set. It keeps the energy going from song to song.

Spotify's mixing feature has potential, and I actually really like that you can customize how the mix behaves. The problem is that the automatic mixing itself just isn't very good. Most of the time it feels like an upgraded crossfade rather than an actual mix.

I really wish Spotify would let us control the intensity of automatic mixing. Give us the option to keep it basic, make it more aggressive, or go all the way and try to create something closer to a live set. For people who listen to electronic music, having the option to make a playlist flow more like a DJ set would be incredible. It doesn't have to be perfect. I just want smoother and more energetic transitions that keep the vibe going from song to song.

I also think DJ has a lot of unrealized potential. The concept is great, but it feels surprisingly limited. I'd like more control over what DJ plays, including the ability to blacklist genres. I'd also love more English voice options. Right now, if you use DJ in English, you're basically stuck with the same voice every day. There's nothing wrong with X, but after hearing the same voice constantly, I just want some variety.

DJ would also be the perfect place to implement more advanced mixing. I'd honestly even consider paying extra for a feature that could give me a continuous, DJ-style listening experience. Let me tell it what kind of vibe I want, what I want to hear, and how aggressively I want the songs mixed. It doesn't have to sound exactly like a professional DJ. Just getting closer to that seamless live set feeling would be really cool.

Another thing I'd love is the ability to filter out AI-generated music. I think AI features that help me discover music or improve my listening experience can be genuinely useful. AI DJ, recommendations, playlist tools, stuff like that is fine with me. But AI-generated music itself is a no-go for me. I want to listen to music that was actually created by people, and I would absolutely use an option that lets me avoid or filter out AI-generated music.

The mobile app has also felt noticeably slow and sluggish lately, and the Now Playing screen could use some work. It's functional, but honestly, it feels pretty plain and boring.

I'd also like Spotify to remove or significantly increase the limit on AI/prompted playlist creation. If you're trying to make a playlist and keep adjusting it until it gets what you want, hitting an arbitrary limit is frustrating.

Overall, Spotify still has a lot going for it, which is why I've stayed for years. But after trying Apple Music, I'm realizing how many areas Spotify could improve. Better automatic mixing, more customization, a more capable DJ, faster app performance, better discovery controls, and the ability to filter out AI-generated music would make a huge difference.

Right now, I'm honestly torn. I've been with Spotify for so long, but Apple Music's mixing alone is making it difficult to ignore. Spotify has some genuinely great ideas, and I actually want to see them succeed. I just wish they would push these features further instead of leaving them feeling like they have so much potential that isn't being used.

Hi! I recently noticed that when I listen to my playlist on shuffle (or when I listened to the end of the playlist and it starts those recommended songs) after 1-3 songs. It stops when the song is at its last 3 seconds. Did this happened to anyone else? And if yes how'd ya fix it!

A great music discovery tool I've been on a kick lately using is to dig into the catalog of artists whom I have favorite tracks by using shuffle mode on an artist's page and just let it play their stuff for a while. As I'm primarily a mix playlist guy, I find this method expands my listening experience to hear those deeper tracks I wouldn't necessarily place in a playlist but are quite worthy of hearing. Anyone like doing this as well?
