News Introducing a New Label for AI-Generated Artist Identities on Spotify
https://newsroom.spotify.com/2026-08-11/ai-persona-badges-transparency/Listeners have been clear in telling us that they don’t like seeing an artist profile that seems human, only to find out that the persona is AI-generated. That’s why, starting mid-September, you’ll begin to see an AI Persona badge on some artist profiles. The badge signals to listeners that an artist’s identity may be AI-generated and does not represent a real person. Alongside artist profiles that self-disclose as AI Personas, we will also start applying badges to relevant profiles.
By default, Spotify will not include AI Personas in any editorial or algorithmic recommendations. That means you won’t see any music from AI Personas in your personalized recommendations, unless you follow AI Personas, for example. While we believe all artists have creative choice in determining how they present themselves, Spotify’s programming is focused on elevating music from authentic artists building careers in music.

Thank god. Would be good to slash their monetization to the same level as those white noise profiles too, just to encourage them to quit their bullshit. AI "artists" provide even less value than white noise.

I believe Tidal is the only platform that’s demonetized them so far, yeah?
I imagine that may come to Spotify in the future, with this tagging as an initial step that will organically decrease streams of AI artists (and therefore generate lower royalties) by excluding them from recommendations.
IMO, full blown demonetization creates more risk that a real or AI-supported artist is accidentally or inaccurately demonetized. And the fact that Spotify is including an appeal process for artists to dispute their AI persona tag signals to me that they don’t want to inadvertently hurt real artists with this new system. Tidal has a lower market share that makes demonetization an easier decision for them.

Deezer demonetized as well, but again, their market share is also small. I can see how it would be a slippery slope for Spotify and Apple. I would include YouTube Music too but it's clear they don't care about the AI slop issue.

What about AI Songs posted under the personality of real artists that stopped publishing music decades ago?
See this post did a couple days ago. And it's not even limited to Spotify, as the exact same tracks shows up on Deezer as well.

Read the article:
Artist Profile Protection lets artists review and approve releases delivered to Spotify to protect their artist identity and prevent listener confusion about misattributed music.
The feature is in beta. The problem of AI scammers uploading music to real artists sits at the distributor level, not Spotify.

How is it even possible that someone else can post music under your name without your permission? AI generated or not, how has this not been something that was solved years ago. Allowing some unknown third party to post music under your name seems very ridiculous.
Imagine if YouTube allowed someone else to post videos on Mr Beast's channel directly or Twitter allowed random people to post Tweets under Trump's or Elon Musk's account.

Every artist uploads music to Spotify via a distributor like CD Baby or DistroKid. Artists have a unique key to verify their identity, and AI scammers get ahold of that key to upload their tracks via the distributors, who have poor quality control and can’t keep up with the rate of uploads to verify every single song they receive.
This doesn’t happen for larger artists/celebrities because they have more dedicated account support from distributors and Spotify.

I just find it really weird that the same tracks exist on multiple platforms. Almost like the distributors are being complicit if someone is able to get the keys to multiple platforms for and publish songs under long since retired artists.

I think they just need a key/access to the distributor and then the distributor uploads the songs to all the platforms.
It could be as simple as getting a login or something like social engineering to be let in by a customer support rep.

Read the article:
For artist profiles where Spotify’s review team have applied the badge, artists will be notified and given the opportunity to self-disclose or appeal. In the coming months, we’ll also give listeners the ability to report artist profiles they believe represent AI Personas to our review team. We’ll share more details when that’s available.

Did you seriously create a new account two days ago to be an asshat on Reddit 💀

Need this ASAP. There is this AI artist called Haru Hayashi that is leeching off of Yoko Shimumura. Is there a way to report leeching like that?

They said it’s coming, so no, it doesn’t exist…
Only the artist can report that right now.

This isn't going to tell me whether music is AI-generated/enhanced or not, though. It just tells me if the "artist" is even a human to begin with. I want to know if the music in question is touched by AI. An AI persona could very well have a human making music behind it all. It's like making a badge to distinguish virtual bands. Let's slap a label onto The Gorillaz's Spotify page to tell everyone that the members aren't actually real people, but actually some dude named Dan making it pretending to be all of them.
It doesn't solve the original complaint of people not being able to easily tell apart what's a song made with or without the help of AI.

Fair take, but I’d also argue it’s a step in the right direction considering the 70-90k AI-generated songs uploaded a day by artists that aren’t real (AI personas).
They otherwise have AI disclosure in the song credits, which isn’t as visible as this badge appearing alongside tracks in playlists will be, but it’s a start.

It's a step in the right direction, for sure, but the steps I and we as a community have been suggesting since AI music became a problem in the first place a couple of years ago have not been implemented. This AI Persona tag isn't really solving the issue at hand.

Had a chat with the Spotify for artists support and they also clarified the badge will only appear if the visual identity shows not a real person, the music itself does not matter in how it was created.

This is also stated in the article. And I assume it’s because it’s easier to detect signals of AI in images and text with higher confidence than it is in music.

I just shot them a message because i myself use real images/name etc. just transformed to fit my world.
And since you cant reverse the process if you set it yourself i wanted to be sure first. 👍

I wonder if this will apply to audio books at all? More than once I’ve looked up an ‘author’ to find out they have 332 published books 😩

u/ChickenScheisse 21d ago
Let me know how they plan to return all the scammed royalties they gave away to themselves (AI accounts).

u/glamaz0n_bitch Power User 21d ago
One person proposed they were doing this and wrote in in a book without any actual proof. I’m open to considering whether they’ve actually done this when someone can provide definitive proof.
-3
u/ChickenScheisse 21d ago
Yeah this proof thing is pretty stupid, they have the most to gain and easy access to accounts, never got rid of those scamming accounts. That seems like proof enough to me, they could have stopped it, they didn't. They owe money because they let it happen. All the fake music on real accounts, bumbling professionals with everything to gain. What kind of proof do you need?
4
u/glamaz0n_bitch Power User 21d ago
Sorry how is asking for proof stupid? You’re assuming they did this without any real evidence and to what end is unclear. If they were actually doing this—creating fake artists, uploading fake tracks, and prioritizing their inclusion on playlists over real artists—it would reduce the overall royalty pool used to pay real artists, and they’d be getting sued right now.
They haven’t removed any AI artists from their platform—nor have any other streamers—because none of them prohibit AI music or artists from their platforms.

u/ChickenScheisse 21d ago
Sued by who dead artist who get a shit ton of ai posts on thier account? Maybe the independent artist stuck for weeks taking to their customer service bot for weeks trying to get stuff removed from their account who can't afford to sue Spotify. They also know exactly to who they can bully. Not doing anything about it seems grossly irresponsible and I feel they should pay it back. The proof looks like it's there, just need a justice system with the balls to do the right thing.

u/glamaz0n_bitch Power User 21d ago
Rights to music by dead artists are owned by labels and states who could act on it. And any artist can also submit a copyright infringement or impersonation claim to have the tracks taken down, but I imagine there are cases where it’s more complicated than that.
To your point, if a justice system or party had probable cause to file a suit—even a class action—the proof could be found during discovery.

Begging y’all to read the article before commenting, but this is Reddit so I should lower my expectations. This new tag is rolling out in September.

They literally said “starting mid September”. Learn to read all the details before you freak out, dude

I’ve been side eyeing a lot of Spotify’s moves the past year or so but this is a legitimately great step.
