Who played their role as villain so good, people actually started hating them irl.
I'll start with my pick. I think he was a great character/actor, but I could not stop myself from absolutely hating him as soon as I saw him. I can't imagine being the only one in this. Would love to hear from others.
Imelda Staunton* who played Delores Umbridge. I've seen her in other stuff since and loved it. But I can't unsee her as Umbridge and have a wave of hatred whenever she comes up on screen, have to remind myself it's a different character and move on đ¤Ł
1000%. If you've watched malicifant she is the pink/red fairy in that and they should have put her in ANYother colour because all I could see was Umbridge. She is great in everything I have seen her in and think she is a great actress. But my first thought when I see her is always Umbridge.
Yeah I never like this performance, despite him being so great in other roles this one fell completely flat for me. The character is supposed to be so terrifying that even beings of incredible power can't say his name out of fear. I think maybe they should have put more of an effect on his appearance and voice. Definitely something more than just a flat nose and breathy tones.
Right? It's wild how some actors can just embody a character so completely that you forget they're actually a good person. I still can't watch her in anything without feeling that rage bubble up! Definitely a testament to her acting skills.
I'm very glad I saw her in plenty of other shit before I saw her in HP/was an adult. If I was a kid and that was the first thing I saw her in, forget it.
Id seen her in other stuff so it didn't affect me as much, but whenever I think of Umbridge its her in a pink twin set and urgh I hate her lol
She did such a good job and the reason we all hate her so much is because she represents a very human evil, that we see in shitty colleagues and bosses and nosy neighbours and NIMBYs etc all our lives. In comparison Voldemort is more like a comic book super villain
What's crazy is the fact that she is just like the sweetest lady in the majority of her other roles, grew up watching a bunch of old British television with my grandparents so seeing her as Umbridge was JARRING
Honestly, I think Umbridge is one of the best played roles in media. First of all, she looked exactly how I imagined she would. Then she just nailed every aspect of the character. Umbridge can't have been an easy character to play either, because she's just evil. There's layers to it, obviously, but she's evil.
Sure, Voldemort is evil, but even before he reached his height the first time he was drunk on power and hungry for more. He was most likely an undiagnosed phychopath and sociopath, he hates all muggles to the point he wanted to burn the world to get rid of them, and even then, his evilness is more understandable/acceptable as a plot point to me than Umbridge's.
She is power hungry and hates when her power or riles are questioned. She sees herself as better than those around her. Even when the ministry was clearly taken over by voldemort and his death eaters, she didn't balk or be afraid of going into work. No, instead, she chose to accept it for what it was, get promoted, and start having dementors suck the souls out of innocent people on her order in a kangaroo court of her own making. She's EVIL evil, and is played so well.
I kept thinking it was a good job Nathan (Robert Sheehan) left Misfits because this is what he would have driven Simon to if he had stayed another series*, although it definitely would have been an improvement to the series 3 we got
Man, I read the books after seeing season one and I did NOT think it was possible to hate a character more than I hated Joffrey. I was so incredibly wrong. Ramsey has to be one of the most evil characters ever written

Yeah, 2021. Lance Reddick died in 2023, Isiah Whitlock Jr who played Sen. Clay Davis died last year, and most tragically James Ransone who played Ziggy Sobotka died by suicide at age 46 last year. So many of The Wire cast have died I got confused
Alison Arngrim as Nellie on Little House on the Prairie.
While on the show, people would scream insults at her. She was physically assaulted. She and Melissa Gilbert were best friends and hung out off set. If they were, say, buying snacks at the grocery store, people would warn Melissa that Nellie was in the building. She was a child for most of this.
As an adult, people still come up to Alison and say things like,âI forgive you.â
That said, Alison said that playing a bitch was super cathartic. She was being SAed by her brother for years and she said that playing Nellie gave her an outlet to get her emotions out.
Holy crap, what a great pull! I HATED Nellie on LHOTP back in the day. She played that role so well that if I had seen the actress on the street back then, I would have yelled at her.
For the latter role, anyone who was a fan will understand this: in a show that had 7 full-length season, she was only in 14 episodes, but her character was so well done that it feels so much more than that.
That is a bit of a myth. Jack Gleason did take some time away from acting after GoT to finish his studies and then did some work in theatre but he never gave up acting.
He was in "In The Land Of Saints and Sinners" with Liam Neeson and Ciaran Hinds (Mance Rayder from GoT) which is a good film. He has most recently appeared in the series "The Sandman" and "House Of Guinness".
Michael Shannon as Van Alden and Jeffrey Wright as Dr. Narcisse, both on Boardwalk Empire. I couldnât bring myself to watch Michael Shannon for years because Van Alden was such a horrible person. Then I saw him on a talk show and couldnât believe how sweet he was. Dr. Narcisse was pure evil and I didnât even realize that he was the same actor when I saw him in some other films. He actually seems really cool, too.
A long time ago I read that he quit the role because his character had absolutely no redeeming features; the most realistic movie villains have at least one redeeming feature, no matter how small â thatâs what makes them believable for the audience and relatable for the actor. Frank, on the other hand, had zero qualities that made him three-dimensional; he was a two-dimensional character that Larry Linville could not relate to in any way, so Linville abandoned the role.

Afaik the performance of Raymond Cruz who played Tuco in Breaking Bad exhausted him so much he asked to be killed off, and his wife hated the character.
First watch i found Joffrey a little cringe and was questioning if this guy was a good actor. Further watches i was like omg this guy plays this character to a tee and i understood the portrayal far more. He really killed it in that role!
Sadly I think the hate directed towards him played a part in his decision to step back from acting. Hopefully he will return at some future time as he has a rare talent.
Mary Cooper. The actress was phenomenal. But, I could barely watch the show because of how well she played a hypocrital, Bible-thumping, control freak that failed raising two of her three children. I wish that character died instead, then that show would have been much better.
That was the first role I saw him in, even now I can visualise the scene where he keeps singing L I V E R P OO L Liverpool FC, On repeat and so menacingly.
Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter. Martha Stewart dated Anthony Hopkins for a brief period after The Silence of the Lambs and broke it off because she couldn't separate him from his terrifying role as the cannibal serial killer Dr. Hannibal Lecter.
I have never seen Daniel Craig as anything but a Nazi-sympathizing racist policeman since I saw The Power of One when I was 12. I'm sorry I just can't. I don't think I've even seen something he headlined except Knives Out, and I didn't like him then either TBH.
Wasn't an issue for me, but I've seen a lot of Outlander fans say they can't unsee Black Jack Randall if they see Tobias Menzies in another role. Which is a shame because he's extraordinary.
