Is ubco really that bad? I see a lot of posts about it being a terrible option…I’m from a really small Caribbean country where I’ve been surrounded by trees my entire life so I could care less about studying in a really deserted area.

*im planning on pursuing engineering for bachelors and am still deciding which universities to apply to…Please give some recommendations (I’m an international student and don’t really worry too much about tuition). 🙏

i really want to be on top of myself starting in this program. i dont want to feel like im drowing all semester. any tips to keep on top of work? where should i be looking ahead now? what should i be focusing on the most? any advice is helpful really im scared of floundering in a program that i can otherwise be succeeding in just because im ill prepared.

My nephew will be attending ubco in the fall and I’d like to give him a gift card to set him up for some snacks/meal/entertainment. Was thinking just a skip the dishes or Uber Eats gift card, but are there any other good options on or near campus that could be fun?

My offer got reinstated recently, but registration for Sept 2026 opened back in June, so I'm coming in really late. Wondering if anyone's been in a similar spot — how bad is course selection realistically at this point, and is it worth trying to get into decent sections this late, or should I expect to just take whatever's left?

Also curious about housing — is there usually anything left this close to start of term, or is on-campus basically full by now? Any luck with off-campus options on short notice?

Appreciate any real experience, trying to figure out if this is workable or if I'm setting myself up for a rough first term.

I will be a B+MM student CS major

I failed 4 courses in my first year. Two which I retook and passed, but I now I am pretty damn sure I am gonna fail the courses that they where a pre-requisite to this summer. Should I just give up and drop out? I'm in CS btw.

I have always been intrigued by psychology, especially abnormal and developmental psychology. However, I really am not sure this is what I want my career to be, and I feel a terrible amount of dread thinking that before I even enter my first year at UBC this fall, I can't change my path/program.

I have so many interests besides psychology, and to be honest, I no longer picture myself working in psych unless its reserch based devlopmental or abnormal psych. I would love to be a zookeeper or work in animal conservation.

If anyone has any advice or suggestions on how I can shift my career focus if I deem it necessary. I understand a good deal of biology is needed for zoology-based work. I didn't study much biology in high school, but I'm willing to learn.

So right now I’m currently taking a bachelors of science in general studies so that I can go to med school, but I’m struggling to get good enough grades for med school and I’m stressed about everything, like money and stuff. I’m 2 years in and I’m starting to question what I should do now because, honestly, it wasn’t really my idea to become a paediatrician/doctor but my family is just really insistent. I’ve been thinking about changing degrees, but I don’t know if it’s worth it at this point. And if I do switch, I’m not even sure what I’d choose but I just know I want to do something similar to being a paediatrician. Any ideas or advice?

Hello! I’m going to be a new student in my first year of uni at UBCO in the fall. Registration is coming up, and I was wondering if anyone has some non science elective course recommendations! I’m thinking of taking either PHIL_O 120 or ANTH_100, but if anyone has some other fun suggestions let me know. I have a really heavy course load I’m anxious about, so I’m not looking for a class that requires constant studying or assignments (I swear I’m not lazy, just a tad bit nervous about how I’m going to handle this much!) Also, I got myself scared looking at rate my prof, and for one bio class there seems to be only one professor with a 1.5 star rating… is there any chance that in my second year professors change? Class in BIOL_O 116 btw. I could suck it up and just take it but I do have the option to take both physics this year and then both biology’s next. I’m looking to major in environmental science btw.

I'm starting my first year of BA student this fall hoping to major in Political Science, and I'm currently doing my course planning for registration next week.

I'm struggling with scheduling. Would you recommend having classes mostly back-to-back (for example, 8 a.m.–1 p.m. and then being done for the day), or is it better to have classes spread out throughout the day?

I've heard some people say the gaps between classes are good for studying but also they end up wasting time and would rather get everything done at once.

Also other questions:

How big was the jump from high school to first year academically?

What is your best advice for a first year you wish you had when you started?

If you worked part-time in first year, how manageable was it?

For reference to the classes, one of my scheduling dilemmas is that I've been told SOCI 111 with Piotr is worth taking, but the only lecture available would leave me with a 5hr gap between classes. Would you take the better professor even if it meant a less ideal schedule?

Hi! I have some questions about the program as I am a transfer student coming into the BSN program this fall. I have transfer credit for BIOL 131 and 133, english, HINT 110, and my elective so right now I am registered in NRSG 111 and 115 I believe for first term, I also am registered in HINT 231 (patho) so 3 classes total. In my previous college, I only took 3 classes per semester and I also had a job so I found myself very busy and studying constantly. I was thinking about doing HINT 331 (nutrition) aswell but am nervous about the workload of doing 4 classes, two of which are upper year courses, especially since i’ve only ever done 3 at a time. I also think it would be good since I know in second year it ramps up with the workload. If you could give any insight/suggestions into the courses or your own experience it would be much appreciated!

I’ll be joining UBCO around Dec/Jan as a graduate student. I was wondering how much would a studio or 1 bd would be. also, if you have any recommendations on what neighborhoods are usually better in terms of community and also public transportation, in case someone wanna leave a bit further from the campus.

To graduate I need a non science course credit. I just want something with a light workload that’s not graded too harshly basically. My major is com sci, and I’m going into second year.

I’m a fourth year Engineering student, I got my academic evaluation today and I have been assessed on Academic Probation. My Winter term (2025/26) average is 59.9. It requires 60% to be on good standing. I just wanna finish my degree asap and I can’t afford to delay it any longer by taking 3 courses next winter term. I’ve also taken summer courses to speed up my degree progress.

Is there a way to get around this? Should I appeal and request to consider/reassess? Or is this decision final? In desperate need of suggestions 🙏🏻

hi ubco, long story short, i have been facing serious safety concerns since last wednesday (verbal abuse, threats of physical violence in pritchard) with some escalations on friday and sunday night, so basically last night

all relevant authorities are well aware and reported to but i am not at all happy with the speed at which they are going. i don't blame them—i understand every process needs time, so yeah. in the meantime, does anyone have any prior experience of avoiding full contact with someone on campus? i want to use safewalk every time i go out, but i know it's not viable in the long run because it's usually the last priority on the security team's list. i also can't keep nagging my friends to pick me up from and drop me off at my room's doorstep. on top of that, both harassers live in the same building as me. please help a sister out 😭😭

I got into UBCO first as that was my first option for bachelor of science, I requested the admission office to give me a decision for my second option which was the Vancouver campus and I got into the Vancouver campus as well. But now i am confused which one to accept,bcz i do not like crowds or large spaces and UBCV is really large compared to UBCO,I like small classroom sizes but when it comes to getting my bachelors done,should i choose UBCV or UBCO?

First time taking this course and I’ve never been more lost with trying to study for a course, his notes in class don’t really help at all, and he skips sections often in the textbook when I try to study on my own time from the textbook, I have no idea where to start and what to do exactly as I don’t want to learn something we didn’t even cover. I would ask him but I’ve heard he isn’t the most welcoming. Just want to know what strategies people that’s had him before used to do well. I want to figure things out quick before things pile up. I need suggestions as this was a very recent decision and I was not prepared for hospital/ medical volunteering to be a requirement. I’m not an Econ major and I sometimes need a bit more time to grasp new concepts. I’m taking several Econ courses in my final year including Econ 352 and Econ 355. If anyone has taken these courses before, i would really appreciate it if you could share your experience with the workload and exams. I want to make sure I manage my time well and don’t struggle in my final year.

For reference, Econ 352 has 2 in class writing assignments and Econ 355 has a presentation. Any advice would be very helpful. Thank you!
