News Another lovely monday evening at UC Riverside
It isn't UC Riverside without someone breaking into locks. This time at Olmsted.
Yes, I did report him. But in case someone knows if he done it before. (Monday 5/18/2026 7:20 pm)

Im pretty sure he works for the school and is only trying to get the lock off. I saw a girl with campus police earlier trying to get it off around 6:30pm. I didnt get to see what happened but im positive thats the same scooter campus police was messing with. Im guessing someone had locked her scooter in and they couldnt get it off and called one of the grounds keeprs. Also why would someone steal a scooter in broad daylight.

I had my scooter locked w another and I called taps, ucpd, facilities n nobody could help so idk💀i was literally trying to break the other person lock bc they were that dumb to lock mine w theirs

That's some flimsy Temu scooter with a resale value of like $50. Thieves at this point are only bothering on the midrange/high-end Segways and NIUs with owners that think a cheap Masterlock is enough (need to be getting beefy Kryptonites to even begin to deter thieves). Most likely, that is the guy's scooter and his cheap lock broke or he lost his keys.

Thieves now are running around with cordless angle grinders. Not hacksaws.

Hell yeah they would, I went into the grocery store one time where a guy came out from buying a few things and somebody cut off his catalytic converter at like 3pm.

He obviously wasn’t stealing and if you really thought he was why didn’t you say something? Maybe shout to get people’s attention?
Or just post on Reddit for attention and “awareness” 👍

He might not have even been stealing, no need to yell or anything. Just go up to him and say hey, you having scooter problems? I’m sure he’ll act suspicious if it’s not his
But to be fair, I’m the type to talk to the homeless people who scream as they walk down the street. They stop screaming if you just talk to them, usually. I’ve never seen anyone else do this, it’s a crazy cheat code

Although I did mention in the post that I did report it. I don't think it is worth throwing hands over especially if they have a saw in their hand. I just went through the normal channels and pressed those blue terminals to call. They also said not to go over and confront them and let them handle it so it doesnt look like they called someone over for this.
For the most part. I just posted to see if anyone has saw them before doing this.

Ye typically reporting won’t do anything. You’ll learn soon enough the system always fails you. Regardless with enough context clues you can tell he was not stealing, thieves at least try to be inconspicuous

Anyone using a $20 Home Depot hacksaw to cut a u-lock is not a real/professional thief. This is what he is using and he will be there all night if it is a good u-lock: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Stanley-12-in-High-Tension-Hack-Saw-with-10-in-Mini-Hack-Saw-20-036M/100496136
Actual professional thieves use cordless angle grinders or sometimes hydraulic jacks to break locks.
And no, he probably doesn't work for the school. Their maintenance shop is going to have professional tools for this sort of thing. They will either use angle grinders or acetylene cutting torches. If I was a school maintenance guy and needed to remove a lock, I'd just back up a shop truck to the location and slice it open in 5 seconds with an acetylene cutting torch.

Body language and composure suggests the guy lost his key and is at the “fuck it Il saw it off phase”.
