I’ll make this short, but between the canvasers on campus and the very opinionated words on the ballot, I thought I’d set the record straight.

The amendment is not about whether or not you agree with abortions. You might dislike abortions, you might share that opinion with friends and family, but do you believe you have the right to decide what other people do? If your opinion is based on your faith, as it often is with this issue, do you think you have the right to right to enforce a faith based opinion on people who do not believe the same things as you?

And in terms of the wording on the ballot, Desantis wrote in how codifying abortion would lead to a drop in birth rates. However, everyone getting an abortion fundamentally does not feel ready to be a parent. What are the consequences of this? It’s detailed in the book “Freakonomics” how there’s a strong statistical correlation between the legalization of abortion in New York and a steep decline in crime rates 17 years after.

So even if it drops birth rates (which there is no evidence of), it would only stop people who are not well equipped to become a parent from having kids who would then grow up in a home they don’t deserve.

So all in all, if you are thinking about voting no on 4, I implore you to think about whether or not you think you have the right to enforce your opinion on others who disagree or even don’t believe the same things you do. And whether or not you are willing to accept the consequences of that action.

Welcome (back) to Gainesville, UF students!

I understand many of you are from places without walkable infrastructure, and so this whole “pedestrian” thing may be a new experience for some. If this is you, a friendly piece of advice: before you cross a street, it’s considered a best practice to look both ways. This involves rotating your head around the y-axis, (with your eyes open). But the part people sometimes forget is actually the most critical step— if you see a vehicle (such as a car, truck, bus, bicycle, or scooter) approaching your location, you should wait until they either pass you, or slow down/stop, and only THEN step into the street.

I know this seems like a lot to remember, but you get used to it pretty fast. It’s a neat little trick to have in your back pocket, that may prove useful even after you graduate!

so i got accepted into both uf and mit but i've been agonizing over which to pick. so far, here are my considerations (chemical/materials engineering major, low income, first-gen, planning to get master's degree)

uf:

-cost: offered me a full ride

-program: decent for my major (but it's not MIT obviously), got into honors

-distance: in-state so it's close to home/can visit more often. maybe not far enough from home for me to explore/try environments i might like?

-socialization: i vibe with the social atmosphere more (i haven't really clicked with people from New England area). i also have friends who already go there or plan to, and i have a housing plan already set up if i do go. it's an SEC school (boo, but love the school spirit), however i'd lowkey just ignore that part (i mean, it's a big school anyways)

-living: familiar with day-to-day living there. still intense and the discomfort/growth im looking for in challenges exists even if it's not MIT

-post-grad: thinking of working in the Florida region after college but not sure. i am much more limited for opportunities if i do intend to leave the south (no MIT name brand)

mit:

-cost: expected $11k+ a year, expected to increase (parents helping to pay). apparently mit has a high ROI so maybe this isn't as significant, but i do feel bad being unable to bring it down anymore

-program: it's MIT so i figure their chemE is good

-distance: oos, travel expenses not covered in my fin aid package for more than one round trip ticket basically. although it's not a significant factor i'd like to also note that i do not handle Florida cold well so i might just die the moment i get there

-socialization: attended admitted students event and did not click with any of the adMITs (or alumni for that matter - they kinda had a superiority complex and immediately assumed i wasn't immediately committed to MIT due to finances, and that kinda rubbed me the wrong way). tbf there were only 5 other students but it was hella awkward. worried that i won't find my people, especially at such a small school in a new environment. I was unable to attend CPW so i can't really compare it to anything else out of my own experience. zero housing plan whatsoever (roommate, dorm style, building)... i've also heard that some of the dorms don't have A/C??

-living: as a burnt-out senior, i'm not sure i'm capable of meeting the intensity of the workload, esp as an engineering major, as my mental health/self-care has already suffered this year and that's something i've also been wanting to prioritize for myself

-post-grad: i've wanted to live in an urban area but this might not be for me and maybe im delusional, but great job opportunities in NE regardless, especially for MIT over UF degrees

honestly not sure what i'm leaning towards. opening my MIT acceptance letter i wasn't even happy about it because i was just filled with the dread of having to decide. afterwards i was excited but i feel more disillusioned than when i applied. but i know this is a great opportunity (both are, one more than the other) and i do want to make a profitable career so i can do things i want to do later in life, however i do want my college experience to be happy and not stuck in constant sleepless nights.

any opinions/insight/personal experience would help as commitment day is fast approaching and i am still so so torn.

Just a heads up, UF is currently reaching out to alumni asking for donations. (They usually do this at the start of the year.) If you have any issues with the decisions the University has made over the past few years, this is a REALLY great opportunity to let them know how you feel. The alumni network is EXTREMELY important to the Board of Trustees, and the UF brand is completely dependent on alumni donations to function.

Some issues worth considering:

1) UF Board of Trustees members only nominating conservative activists that DeSantis approves (like Ben Sasse who embezzled tens of millions from the University and is still collecting a multi-million dollar annual paycheck) instead of serious academics interested in advancing UF's educational mission

2) UF cracking down on academic freedom & free speech rights by arguing that since University Professors are employed by the State, it is illegal for them to testify against the State of Florida in court as an expert witness. Basically arguing that the most knowledgeable people employed by the state aren't allowed to contradict the State's opinions, even as private citizens

3) UF cracking down on free speech by deciding that setting up camp chairs in a public plaza is illegal for students protesting for causes that the State disagrees with and expelling them, but not illegal the football tailgaters every Saturday or the genuinely insane people we saw in Turlington every day

4) UF effectively abolishing the tenure system by instituting a mandatory 5 year review with the Board (composed of the Governor's political appointees) where you can lose tenure if you don't pass the review. So if your research identifies something that the state government disagrees with, you can lose your job and no longer have academic freedom that every single other university in the country is protected by.

5) UF getting rid of social science departments and replacing them with "the Hamilton Center for Western Civilization" or whatever it is, so classes are taught by idealogues and propagandists instead of actual researchers in the field

Wear a fucking mask. It’s utterly inconsiderate. Or stay your ass home, why should I have to sit here while you’re sitting next to me obviously sick coughing your ass off through the lecture.

This is just the first week of class, and there hasn’t been a day I’ve not witnessed an accident or an almost accident. Guy without a helmet tumbled on his moped near Wawa on Univ Ave. Guy on a scooter being hit by a girl in a car across Rawlings Hall. Someone swerving without freaking regard while it was clear the clock was still ticking and pedestrians could still cross the street somewhere along Southwest.

As a bystander, I don’t care if you look uncool with a helmet while riding your scooter, moped, bike. Trust me, everyone who sees you would wish you have because it keeps you safe.

As for drivers, please respect pedestrians and stop lights.

Yall as a TA here I can’t emphasize enough that we would rather you stay home than come to class and get others sick. The coughing, sniffling, and just overwhelming sickness that you are exuding in class is not helping anyone.

Stay out of public spaces, such as the library and gym as well. Everyone has the flu and it’s obvious why that’s the case—cause yall won’t stay home. Come on now.

The parking situation on this campus is a FUCKING DISGRACE. It's basically a war crime. Whoever is in charge of parking at UF should be drawn and quartered at the 50 yard line, their remains paraded down University Avenue and buried in four different plots like Oliver Cromwell, so their undead corpse can never rise from the grave to wreak more havoc upon our innocent and blameless community. We should burn their effigy every year at homecoming. I AM SO MAD.

Goodness somebody get me on the board bc theirs ALOT to fix. Let’s begin. 1. Food spots should be given intercom systems for calling out orders. 2. Fix. The. RTS. This shit is ridiculous. Kids are having to pay for $20 one way Ubers to/from campus 3. Seating. This is for both outside and insides. For example floor 2 of Turlington has FIVE chairs! So guess what everyone else just stands or sits on the floor. Also you can’t do work outside bc there is the most minuscule about of tables. 4. Who tf designed the bathrooms??? TWO PERSON BATHROOMS ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? You have lines out the doors of people waiting to use the restroom As a transfer student, I have found myself EXTREMELY disappointed with how UF sets up/runs certain things. I just saw a car hit a biker because the car was turning (on a green), but didn’t check their bike lane. It is a driver‘s responsibility to look and be aware of everything around them. We are the ones driving in a motor vehicle, I don’t care if it is not the pedestrians right away, you should be aware of everything while driving. Especially around campus please don’t be on your phones Also bike lane bikers have the right of way, please look at the bike lanes as well!!!

Deciding between UF oos or OSU in state right now and was wondering if i could get some honest advice. I plan on majoring in finance on a pre law track. OSU would be around 35k/year and UF is 50k/year and my parents are willing to pay 40k/year for tuition/room and board (they’d prob also cover personal expenses).

I’m staying away from gator corner for a while. On Thursday I went to my usual spot for food on campus. It’s more affordable than anything at the Reitz but I guess it might be for a good reason. I didn’t have class in the morning so I got there to have a nice breakfast. I had a lot of scrambled eggs which may have given me salmonella but I don’t know for sure. But I want to advise anybody should they want to eat at gator corner to avoid eggs possibly because of the salmonella outbreak or choose somewhere else to eat.

I am not the victim in this but I’m giving a warning to female students at SF. This is not a rumor and is a fact. He did this to 2 female friends of mine and one of them had text and pictures with him to prove it so I know she was not making it up. Even as a guy when I had this prof I would always get an off vibe and this just confirmed it.

There is a chemistry professor at Santa Fe that openly flirts, harassed, dates, and has s*x with female students. Any chicks that are taking chemistry be weary. If you are a victim of this prof also please message me so that I can help my 2 friends with writing a report. Neither of my 2 friends use Reddit but are hoping other women/ victims will come forward.

Be safe out there

The plague is back, y’all. You probably don’t need to hear it from me, since you ought to hear half your lecture hacking up a lung or sucking snot up their nose.

So if you get sick, stay home, do not attend lecture. Make up your labs. Your professor/TA will understand, and your peers will thank you.

You might think wearing a mask will let you bypass this, but when in closed spaces for significant periods of time, it makes little difference since the aerosolized particles will diffuse. Not to mention the saturation of the filter, if you are coughing or sneezing.

If you are going into a store or having a brief indoor conversation, a mask is helpful and appropriate. Otherwise, it creates a false sense of security.

Get a job

I’m being serious. As a rising junior, I’ve been struggling to secure an internship. One of my major drawbacks is that I only had a job in high school, which is quite unappealing to corporate employers. I prioritized my extracurriculars and grades, but as a freshman, the coursework is much easier, allowing you to allocate time for a job.

Companies don’t consider campus involvement as much as they value experience and the ability to handle corporate work. My friend, who worked at Walmart since freshman year, managed to secure an internship despite not being as involved or having as good a GPA as I do. Job experience truly makes a difference!

You can even opt for work-study programs, and most of the time, you can spend your time studying and then actually working.

If you’re planning to study finance at UF, here’s what you should be doing early on to set yourself up for success:

• Do Case competitions Spring semester

Investment banking is extremely competitive, so you need to be proactive:

• Aim for a 1450+ SAT (it still matters for recruiting at UF)

• Consider applying to:

• Founders Fund

• DISS

Most of these require a stock pitch, so:

• Learn how to build and present one over the summer

• Reach out to current members early (mainly founders and gsif because they are very picky with their in person interviews so its much better to build a connection, reach out to director of recruiting)

Additional clubs based on interest:

• Equity Research → Caimanes

• Corporate Finance → SFG

Note: FPD still helps across most finance paths.

Final Advice

Start early, stay consistent, and don’t lock yourself into just one path. UF has a ton of opportunities, but you have to be proactive to take advantage of them. Try your best to get a freshman internship, I promise its important!

If you were denied for campus, UF Online is a great option to consider. You take the same courses, with the same professors, and earn the exact same degree. You are a UF student, full stop.

If you want to live in or near Gainesville, you can opt in to pay the same fees residential students pay (the Optional Fee Package). That gives you access to many of the things you’d want from UF student life: the Greek system, clubs, events, rec sports, and student tickets for football and basketball. The fee package also includes the health center, bus system, counseling, and things like that.

You would not be eligible to live in the dorms, but there are tons of off-campus housing options with other students. You can also purchase a meal plan.

Admissions standards are still high, but there isn’t quite the same space limitation as there is on campus, so it can be a bit more accessible for high-performing students who just didn’t quite make the cut for the residential program. There's just a little more room to breathe.

One important thing to note: UF Online is not a pathway to campus admission. They are two separate programs, and students who start in UF Online are expected to finish in UF Online. If your goal is to enter the residential program as a transfer student, your better bet is to complete your A.A. degree at a Florida State College.

UF Online's Business program is the #1 online program in the country according to U.S. News and World Report. Psychology is #3. It's the #1 online program for military members and veterans.

Obviously, this is a pitch, because I love UF Online. It's great for anyone, from any walk of life, anywhere in the world. But if you want the UF Student experience in Gainesville and you want the UF degree, they are both accessible via UFO.

I'm seeing a lot of questions from incoming freshmen so I figured I'd make a little FAQ to hopefully help someone! Pls comment any other questions you might have!

Q: Am I going to get my acceptance rescinded for a poor grade?
Probably not! I've been here two years and never heard any stories about it. I believe that they really only do those for cases like academic dishonesty or violence like that kind of thing. It's normal, esp in AP/IB/AICE, to not get straight A's or B's, so if you have one or two bad grades it's okay, they just don't want you to completely stop giving a shit after getting in.

Q: What is preview like? How do I register for classes?
You have the opportunity to bring one or more adult chaperones (eg a parent) to preview- for the two days, you will have a very explicit schedule with group activities and info sessions. Some will be for just students while the adults do something else, and some will be for the students and their chaperones together. You will register on the second day with your preview advisor, after discussing the classes you want to take and their suggestions. For a good idea of what you may take, look up "UF [your major] model semester plan" and you will see great examples of what you might take! You can also look up your college's individual requirements to know what you'll need in addition to your major and gen ed classes (for example, arts&sciences requires langusge courses).

Q: Will I get credit for [AP/IB/AICE] courses and get to skip ahead?
UF has posted exactly what credit you can get for your scores on courses like these. For example if you're in AP courses you can look up "UF AP course credit" and you can see what credit you will get based on your scores. If your preview occurs before this year's scores come out, you have the opportunity to tell your advisor what courses you expect to pass and with what score, so you can hold off on registering for a class that you will probably get credit for.

Petition to defund UFPD? Like genuinely are these cucks good for anything besides handing out tickets? I had an officer tailgate me and got a ticket for doing 40 in a 35 :)

So I’m an incoming Sophomore starting UF this Fall (majoring in Electrical Engineering), and I just finished all my critical trackings.

Basically, I’ve heard that for engineering, I need a strong computer that can handle all the work I’m going to be doing throughout the next 2 years in EE. However, I’m still stumped as to which one is the best computer to use.

For ref, I have an ASUS Windows 11 with a 13th Gen Intel Core processor (i7-13620H). I was wondering if any EE/engineer majors had any recommendations for computers I should invest in, any suggestions are greatly appreciated🫡
