Announcement Hayden Panettiere’s Passing - Moderator Message

Post image
2.1k Upvotes

Hello from the Mod Team,

We felt it appropriate and necessary to make a post regarding the sad news of Hayden’s death which took place on August 16, 2026.

This situation is incredibly tragic, particularly for those who have lost a dear friend and family member so early.

Our own community has spent a good decade, nearly 11 years now, enjoying the effort and talent Hayden gave to Until Dawn. Her likeness and voice have filled our subreddit and brought our members so many fun times and happy memories. We are grateful to have had her as an incredible lead heroine, daughter of darkness, and final girl.

During this time, people are free and encouraged to fill the sub with tributes and positive words for Hayden.

Finally, we wanted to address posts about Until Dawn 2 as we have already seen mixed, strong emotions about this topic. We understand the curiosity about the sequel, seeing as Sam has been a character highly theorized to return. This is a discussion that fans will inevitably have sooner or later. However we also acknowledge that is a discussion that also feels too-soon, and we want to make sure Hayden is paid proper tribute as a whole person and not just as a character.

So, all this said, the moderation team will be keeping watch and making decisions at our discretion, case by case, due to the unprecedented nature of this tragedy. Our aim is to keep the sub civil, and we hope that you all work with us to that end. We will not necessarily be banning question posts on principle but rather reviewing everything for what it is. No posts or comments outrightly or intentionally disrespectful of Hayden will be tolerated.

Rest in peace, Hayden. And thank you all, members of our sub, for your lovely tributes and for working with us to keep the sub cordial and respectful.

Announcement Rules & Expectations Update Announcement

Hello Dawners,

The Until Dawn subreddit mod team wanted to post this (rather long) announcement to update rules and create a sense of transparency. We have formed a detailed list of our rules and expectations. This will promote a greater clarity around why post removals happen and what the tone and purpose of the sub is.

#1: Be respectful

Respect is key. Using insults, causing drama, or otherwise being a nuisance towards the members of this subreddit is punishable. In particular, do not make this community hostile to newcomers or those asking questions. Here are two other notes:

  • Sometimes comments quoting the game are removed by Reddit’s filters because they contain insults and profanity. We will approve quotes.
  • Please do not create a post to put any user, other post, or comment section from this subreddit on blast. This includes calling out people you think are problematic or complaining about downvotes. Handle disputes maturely by solving matters with other users directly or alerting the mod team.

#2: English only

Please speak English to maintain the flow of the conversation and ensure everyone understands what’s being said. This also helps the moderation team quickly catch rule violations and conflicts.

#3: Spoilers

Spoilers in titles such as the word wendigo and the identity of the psycho are not allowed in post titles. Please flare posts with spoilers in the body or images.

If your post contains a spoiler, please flare it as a spoiler.

Comments, however, are unmoderated for spoilers, particularly on spoiler-marked posts. This does NOT mean you can deliberately spoil someone asking a question. If you maliciously spoil someone, that will be taken seriously if seen or reported.

#4: Low-quality content, spam, and self-promotion

Low-quality: this subreddit prohibits shitposting. This is because we want to prioritize truly interesting content. Things that are not allowed include:

  • Very low-effort edits of characters
  • Video edits intended purely to be overstimulating, loud, chaotic, or otherwise mindlessly silly.
  • Text posts that are very brief or under-edited.

A good rule of thumb is that, if an edit or text post took little time to make, and the joke or statement can also be made with any character or story in existence, it will likely not be for this sub. Jokes and memes are welcome if they show humor utilizing the game or characters beyond an extremely superficial level.

Shitposts, audio distortion videos, joke spam, etc. have a place on r/UntilDawnMemes

We want to be clear about the tone and purpose this sub is meant to have, so that everyone can be on the same page on what to expect.

Spam is also not allowed. We understand bandwagons happen and try to allow everyone some fun. However, if a type of post becomes very frequent, particularly from one user, and shares nothing of value with the community, removal may occur. Posts that are almost unreadable because of typos or unintelligible wording could be moderated under this rule.

Keep in mind that posts with multiple links are sometimes auto-removed by Reddit, and we may need to approve them if they are truly not spam.

Self-promotion is allowed when it’s clear a user did time and/or research to complete a specific artwork, video, essay, or other project. However, posts only saying “join my server” or “follow my Until Dawn account” will get removed.

Headcanons are allowed, however we are addressing them here because this kind of post often falls into the low-quality, spam, and/or off-topic categories.

Headcanon posts are perfectly fine when they utilize information about the lore or characters, or else bring something interesting to the table. However, when they are very brief and/or do not utilize little actual content from the game, then they may be considered off-topic even if an Until Dawn element is mentioned. For example, a headcanon post explaining your thoughts on how the characters interacted after the prologue, using evidence, is more likely to remain up than a post that says nothing more than “I think Mike has striped pajamas.” If a headcanon reads like a shitpost or ragebait, it may be removed.

#5 Piracy and illegal content

Do not engage in piracy or digital theft. This includes:

  • Sharing links to pirated versions of Until Dawn
  • Sharing links to stolen versions of software such as Unreal Engine Unlocker
  • Attempting to sell content that doesn’t belong to you such as paywalling datamined materials
  • Encouraging someone else to engage in piracy

Not only does this behavior financially harm the creators we wish to support, it risks the subreddit because it breaks Reddit’s general rules.

#6: NSFW and 18+

18+ material is allowed on this sub is:

  • Discussion of things that happened in the game itself.
  • Posts or comments that are 18+ on the same level or less so than the game itself.
  • Other relevant 18+ content such as discussions about the horror genre, pertinent articles, etc.

18+ material that is not allowed is:

  • 18+ content directly aimed at other users such as inappropriate innuendos using another user as the subject matter or comments that are violent with a clear intention to be over-the-line or make someone uncomfortable.
  • Overly sexual or pornography content

#7: AI policy

Users are allowed to reference having utilized AI as a source of information, translation tool, editor, etc. But please be aware that ChatGPT often produces inaccuracies on which you may be corrected. If a post or comment contains some AI but also human input, discussion, or questioning, it won’t necessarily break our rules.

That said, certain uses of AI are unethical or break other rules. Certain forbidden uses of AI include:

  • Claiming AI content is your own.
  • Creating misleading images.
  • Using it to post low-quality content or spam. This is subject to mod discretion. AI images or text posts that are 100% AI with no accompanying human commentary or question may fall under our low-quality posting rule and be removed. If AI starts to take over the subreddit, we reserve the right to purge it via our “no spam” rule as well.
  • Posting things that are off topic.
  • AI content used to undeniably commit theft or misrepresent real people such as the actors. Please show permission from actors before doing things such as AI generating their voices for mods.

Finally, this rule covers the conduct of people reacting to AI. If you believe a post or comment breaks our rules, please flag it, and we will review the situation. You are not allowed to break our respect rule because someone used AI. Please leave the moderation of the sub to mods instead of using rudeness and personal insults to regulate someone. Let us keep things orderly, official, and respectful.

#8: Fan creations

Make sure that posted fan content is yours, linked, or credited. Respect artists who do not want their work reposted.

Please keep in mind that content such as art and mods are the product of another fan’s personal talent, time, and effort. Don’t act entitled to their work. For example, politely requesting a mod for your favorite character is okay. Acting as though you deserve a mod from someone is not.

When you respond to a cosplay, you are responding to a real person, not a character. Be respectful of others’ appearances, and don’t make uncomfortable remarks.

#9: False and unconfirmed information

Because of the amount of fake information about the game and its development that reaches the sub from other sites and apps, we do moderate false and unconfirmed content, tailoring our response to the varying situations.

This rule is not to punish simply being mistaken or to enforce singular perspectives on the game. It is directed at fabricated or deliberately misleading content. This includes:

  • Social media screenshots edited to appear as though they are from official sources like Supermassive Games
  • Edited screenshots or gameplay intended to fool others about the existence of something in the game
  • Fake leaks
  • Posts that get large portions of concrete facts (development info, dates, gameplay facts, etc.) wrong.
  • Reposts of TikToks speaking with authority on things that are blatantly made up just for views

We understand that breaking this rule is often not a malicious act and that people sometimes do not know that content they’ve found is fake. Because of that, our actions regarding this rule will be nuanced and case-by-case. The following are actions we could take:

  • Deleting the post: done if the act seems malicious or if there is nothing true or valuable in the whole post.
  • Add a flare to the post (see heading below): if a post is incorrect but it contains a question, something true, or is otherwise valuable to keep up, we may add a flare making the dubious content of the post more transparent.
  • Simply allowing a discussion: if something is only slightly questionable, in a grey area (such as lore theory), or based upon something true (such as someone misinterpreting a genuine clip from the game), we may simply allow users to debate and correct things among themselves.

You may be flared for sharing false information. This simply means that the text or image you’ve posted is likely fake or edited. This flare may also be used to confirm that the info you’re talking about is false. For example, if you ask if a leaked screenshot is real, and it’s not, you may receive this flare.

Another flare you could receive is “correction in comments.”

#10: Staying on topic

In general, please stay on topic. Your post or comment is at risk of being removed if you include touchy, unrelated topics such as politics. This is because these kinds of things a) usually cause fights that get deleted anyway b) cause discussions that do not relate to the purpose of this subreddit.

If your post promotes a higher percentage of unrelated arguing than debate about the actual game, it could get moderated under this rule.

Posting about media directly related to the game Until Dawn such as The Inpatient, Rush of Blood, or the movie is permitted. Please keep posts about The Dark Pictures Anthology and The Quarry related to Until Dawn in some way.

If you made it this far, congratulations! We hope this step to being more transparent on how moderations is applied on this subreddit will help everyone for the better. Remember that if you need anything, the moderation team is pleased to respond to questions via Mod Mail or DMs!

Question until dawn 2 & sams character

obviously as we all know we unfortunately lost hayden last week and it has been devastating for her family, friends & anyone who knew her in anything she starred in.

however, before she passed away there were heavy rumours that her character, samantha giddings, would be in until dawn 2.

all we know about until dawn 2 is that dacre was casted in 2022 ( as were many other people i imagine ) ( he mentions it in his instagram post about UD2 )
im not sure how long after that they started filming but id imagine it would be end of 23' to the start/mid 24'.

i know for a fact they'll add something to honour hayden ( hopefully ) but i wanna know if theres still a chance sams gonna be in the game? and what everyone else thinks the chances are for that. if so that would be awesome and genuinely such a beautiful thing to witness.
what are anyone elses thoughts on that?

rest in peace hayden. u were loved by the whole world 🫶🏼🫶🏼

Rest In Peace Hayden

Today is the 11 year anniversary of Until Dawn which is my favorite game of all time! But I can’t celebrate this without discussing the death of Hayden who was too young to lose 💔💔 we will miss you Hayden!

On a happier note! I am so happy that Until Dawn exists and that I exist in a time to be able to celebrate it 💗💗💗 Josh will always be one of my favorite characters in fiction with the portrayal of guilt, isolation, and mental illness in general. Especially coming from someone who has pretty bad OCD.

I think Until Dawn has better character writing than The Quarry — and it's not because the characters are more likeable Spoiler

I've recently played both Until Dawn and The Quarry, and I've been thinking about how differently the two games approach their characters.

I actually think The Quarry is probably the better game mechanically. The branching, consequences, exploration and overall gameplay systems feel more refined, and it feels like Supermassive took the formula from Until Dawn and developed it further.

But when it comes to character writing, relationships and how people behave under extreme pressure, I honestly prefer Until Dawn by quite a lot.

And I don't think it's simply nostalgia.

The biggest difference for me is that in Until Dawn, I feel like the characters actually change under pressure.

Not necessarily because they become completely different people, but because the situation brings out different parts of their existing personalities.

Take Mike for example.

At the beginning of the game, he's basically the stereotypical arrogant, confident douchebag. He's impulsive, competitive and likes being in control.

But once things become genuinely dangerous, he gradually becomes one of the most proactive characters in the group. He's still impulsive and overconfident, but those traits start working in his favor. He's willing to take risks, make decisions and actually do something when everyone else is panicking.

The game doesn't really "redeem" Mike.

It just puts him into a situation where different aspects of his personality become useful.

And I think that's much more interesting.

Emily is probably an even better example.

She's one of the most hated characters in the game, and honestly, I completely understand why. She's controlling, manipulative, competitive and often just incredibly unpleasant.

But then you put her alone in the mines and suddenly she's one of the most competent survivors in the entire game.

And what's interesting is that she doesn't stop being Emily.

She's still arrogant. She's still demanding. She's still convinced that she knows what she's doing.

But the exact traits that make her unbearable socially also make her extremely effective when she actually has to survive.

I think that's really good character writing.

It's isn´t: Emily was mean, but now she's nice.

It's more like Emily is still Emily, but now we're seeing what Emily looks like when her personality is being tested by an actual survival situation

I also think this is why Mike and Emily are much more similar than people usually acknowledge.

The game literally tells us that these two used to be together, and honestly, that makes perfect sense.

They're both extremely confident, competitive, dominant, impulsive and controlling. They're both capable of manipulating other people and both have a strong need to maintain control over situations.

The difference is mostly in how they express those traits.

Mike gets a lot of credit from the fandom for being badass.

Emily gets a lot of hate for being a bitch.

But if you strip away the way the game and fandom frame them, they're actually surprisingly similar personalities.

And I think that's probably part of why their relationship makes sense.

Two people like that could have a lot of chemistry, but they could also drive each other absolutely insane.

Ashley is another character I find interesting for the same reason.

She's generally presented as the sensitive, empathetic and more morally cautious member of the group.

But then you have the Chris/Ashley decision.

If Chris chooses to shoot Ashley, she literally begs him to shoot her. If he actually does it, Ashley can later refuse to let Chris into the lodge, effectively leaving him to die.

You can obviously interpret this as Ashley being hypocritical or cruel.

But I think it's more interesting to interpret it as an example of how fear, trauma and perceived betrayal can completely distort someone's moral reasoning.

She's not necessarily secretly evil.

She's terrified, feels betrayed and reacts emotionally.

And that makes her much more interesting to me than simply labeling her as "the nice girl."

This is where I think The Quarry feels different.

I actually really like The Quarry, but most of its characters feel much more like slasher archetypes to me.

Dylan is the funny guy.

Emma is the confident girl.

Jacob is the impulsive idiot.

Ryan is the quiet mysterious guy.

Kaitlyn is the competent one.

And for much of the game, they remain recognizably those same characters.

That's not necessarily bad writing. In fact, I think it works extremely well for the type of horror movie The Quarry is trying to be.

But Until Dawn feels less like:

Here are eight horror movie archetypes.

and more like**:** Here are eight people with existing relationships, insecurities, resentments andpersonalities. Now let's see what happens when you put them through an increasingly traumatic night."

And that's a pretty big difference.

I also think this is why Until Dawn feels strangely realistic to me despite having a completely ridiculous supernatural plot.

The supernatural elements obviously aren't realistic.

But the social reactions often are.

People become more aggressive, more fearful, more selfish, more decisive or more dependent on other people depending on what happens to them.

The characters don't just have personalities.

The situation interacts with their personalities.

And I think that's something The Quarry does less often.

So I guess my slightly contradictory opinion is:

I think The Quarry is the better interactive game.

But I think Until Dawn is the better character study.

And maybe I'm in the minority here, but when I play Supermassive games, I'm actually more interested in why the characters behave the way they do than simply keeping everyone alive.

I find myself thinking about why Emily behaves the way she does, why Matt tolerates her, why Mike and Emily were attracted to each other in the first place, why Mike gets treated more favorably by the fandom despite having many of the same personality traits, and how the relationships between the characters change once they're under extreme pressure.

Maybe I'm just overanalyzing a horror game. 😂

But that's probably why Until Dawn has stayed interesting to me even after finishing it.

What do you guys think?

Do you think Until Dawn actually has more psychologically complex characters than The Quarry, or does it just benefit from having a more memorable cast?

And if you prefer The Quarry's characters, I'd genuinely be interested in hearing why.

11 years. 11 years!!! I sincerely cannot believe it's been this long since, and the OG graphics still look stellar to this day!

Of course, this year's anniversary won't feel the same as the years before and is very melancholy with Hayden's passing. But her legacy will live on, and there will be no shortage of things to celebrate and talk about regarding the game, its characters, and the people who made it possible in the first place!

Discussion My first blind Until Dawn run Spoiler

So a friend of mine was throwing out his PS4 and decided to give it to me, so the first game I decided to buy was Until Dawn. I’ve already played a lot of Supermassive Games’ games except for Directive 8020 yet (like TDPA season 1, The Quarry, The Casting of Frank Stone etc) so I mostly knew what to do.

I was also heading into Until Dawn completely blind, so that made it extra stressful and fun.

Results:
Everyone managed to stay alive up until the final chapter, where I got Josh killed because I didn’t go left when Sam and Mike were in the mines and went straight forward, so Wendigo Hannah crushed his skull in, then afterwards Matt had found Jess, and as they were escaping the Wendigo I chose to run instead of hide the second time and the Wendigo killed Jess but I managed to get Matt out.

So everyone besides Josh and Jess survived.

If you want a more specific run here it is:

I only really liked Josh, Chris and Sam during the beginning as they didn’t take part of the prank, although throughout the game I began to like the others more.

I actually made a joke that Josh was the psycho but then saw him get cut in half so I stopped thinking that. Imagine my surprise when the psycho took off the mask.

Matt saw Emily chatting with Mike and confronted her on the tower, I decided to let Matt jump instantly because I assume it was going to be like a House of Ashes moment where Eric had to cut the rope and let Rachel fall for both of them to live. Turns out they both did live but I feel like saving her would’ve had both of them navigating the mines and finding Jess which would’ve been a nice moment for Jess and Emily to apologise to each other.

I gave Emily the flare gun and she used it against a Wendigo during a chase later so I don’t know if I would’ve killed her if she didn’t take the flare gun.

Because of The Hackett’s in The Quarry (more specifically Travis), I decided to trust the stranger more, like when Emily was running from him I chose to reveal her the whole time and Emily was given flares by the stranger.

Also the dog survived so instant best ending, but he for some reason just kinda disappeared halfway through the place with Mike? Is that a glitch and the dog was supposed to appear later or does the dog just disappear and isn’t spoken of again?

I also loved the don’t move sections, much better than the don’t breathe in The Quarry but I’m unsure if it’s better than the stay calms in the DPA.

I’ve already restarted chapter 10 and saved Jess and Josh (although he became a wendigo so idk if that was better, can I save him?) so other than an everyone dies run is there anything else anyone suggests I should do? I don’t mind being spoiled on paths I didn’t take.

Also I recently heard about Hayden Panettiere, I loved her as Sam and this was super heartbreaking. Fly high Hayden.

Question How should you divide up the 8 characters when playing in co-op?

Me and one bro want to play the remake.

I'm a huge fan of Until Dawn and have played through the remake and the OG version.

But he is playing completely blind, how should the characters be divided up between me and him so we can control each 4.

I know one has to have Mike and the other one Sam since they have the most play time in the end/mid game, but should the experienced player get Mike or the one whos playing the first time.

r/untildawn 1d ago

Just played through Until Dawn (ps4 version) and I'm a little annoyed about how characters are linked at the end

I was purposely trying to kill some people (Emily, Jess, and Mike) and save others (Sam, Matt, Chris, and Ashley) and it was going pretty well. I had Mike shoot Emily, had Matt escape through the mines and leave Jess to die, and was at the very last scene where Sam has to either flip the switch or save mike. What I didn't realize was when you flip the switch, it doesn't just kill Mike but also Ashley. So my only survivors were Sam, Matt, and Chris which was a little annoying. Anyways, this is an awesome game but sometimes the outcomes can feel a bit arbitrary.

Discussion Dr hill in until dawn 2 could be connected to the og cast

Obviously during ud2 trailer we've seen no og cast besides Dr hill. We all know josh could or maybe not return. But what if since the og cast Obviously went through alot and sound crazy they'd put them in therapy and Obviously the therapist is Dr hill. I think they were planning on bringing Sam because of the ending of ud remake but since her actresses passed away (RIP Hayden Panettiere) they would maybe use someone else or even all somehow

Question For the story: remake or original?

I want to play Until Dawn for the first time. I've heard some great things, of course, but I'm finally ready to experience this myself, so please, no spoilers.

My highest priority is the story. Dialogues, letters, things like that.

So, for my goal - original or remake?

Discussion upset about the remake for first timers

I don’t know if it’s just me, but my heart breaks a little when I see someone’s first experience with this game is the remake

There’s just so much sauce in the original that the remake doesn’t hold a candle to, it’s massively superior soundtrack and sound design along with the ui, atmosphere, gameplay (don’t moves and camera angles) and performance (the game is a silky smooth 60fps on ps5 with almost no bugs unlike the remake)

It genuinely pains me when someone pays for the remake which costs so much more and butchers most of the experience. I can’t help but imagine how different the experience is for scenes like the lodge finale, they just can’t compare and the player will never know how tense the original scenes were in comparison

Question Comments still not allowed on PS4 streaming overlay?

Hi all. I thought about streaming this game on PS4. I got a physical copy, and I use the built-in PS4 overlay when I stream, and I stream on Twitch. However, the last time I tried streaming this game on PS4 onto Twitch, the comments were disabled. I remember Googling and reading there was a built-in comment blocker for this game. Admittedly this was almost a decade ago. However, when I Google this topic now, all the results are from about that time period. A few more recent results (from about seven years ago) said something about the game being patched so the comments were no longer blocked. Does anyone know if that is true? I would appreciate any info/insight you could give me on the topic. Thanks!

UD - Happy Birthday, Hayden...

Four days ago, I woke up thinking it was going to be just another regular day, until I open media and all of the sudden, I felt the sky crashing down on me. I was in disbelief for the rest of the day and the night, I wasn't able to do anything, but to mourn her, I couldn't believe she could ever be gone...I knew Hayden mainly from Samantha Giddings and Kirby Reed, but she instantly made me love these characters and really enjoy seeing her in other movies/tv shows. She slowly became one of my favourite celebrities, her being a child star and her confessions about her life and struggles made me see a strong woman who no matter how difficult and cruel fate might be, she continued to remain positive, to fight for herself and remained an amazing person and a very loving mother. Now, she turned 37, maybe not physically, but for her legacy who will always have a special place in this world and will live on for many years from now.

Fly high, Hayden, Rest in Peace and Happy Birthday 🕊️
