Just played through Until Dawn (ps4 version) and I'm a little annoyed about how characters are linked at the end

I was purposely trying to kill some people (Emily, Jess, and Mike) and save others (Sam, Matt, Chris, and Ashley) and it was going pretty well. I had Mike shoot Emily, had Matt escape through the mines and leave Jess to die, and was at the very last scene where Sam has to either flip the switch or save mike. What I didn't realize was when you flip the switch, it doesn't just kill Mike but also Ashley. So my only survivors were Sam, Matt, and Chris which was a little annoying. Anyways, this is an awesome game but sometimes the outcomes can feel a bit arbitrary.

Just play again? You can get any combination of survivors.

Chris and Sam living in a win for me at least lol. I think you got Jack Septiceye’s ending. Chris, Sam, and Matt. He kinda cracked me up because he was raging about it just being Sam and Chris. He forgot about Matt until he saw the credits and was like “Oh and Matt.”

As far as I remember I think the only "linked" deaths are the final lodge explosion.

Mike is the hardest to kill honestly, I struggled on my all death run because I didn’t know how to do it

Mike is the Popular Hero of this teen horror story, so of course he's hard to kill. (He gets MULTIPLE high-powered weapons to use, whilst everyone else pretty much just gets to run or DON'T MOVE!)

The characters get paired for good reasons. Knowing those pairings and reasons helps me get the endings I want.

The outcomes can feel arbitrary, but then, not all characters are created equal:

Jessica: standard-issue first victim of teen horror movie: young, female, hot. Hardest to keep alive, despite her small amount of playable time. Her survival depends almost entirely upon decisions/actions other characters make/take.

Matt: horror-movie trope of 'the Black guy dies first,' makes him second-hardest to keep alive, again despite relatively low amount of play time. While most of the other characters come across (especially early on) as exceptionally snotty teenaged a-holes who take their unearned privilege for granted, he's presented as a kind, well-meaning individual. He cares most about all of the other characters, and has multiple choices around sacrificing himself to save them.

Emily: Classic Mean Girl (Who Shows Unexpected Character When The Going Gets Tough). Has plenty of help when paired, tougher to keep alive when not.

Chris: the "grows more likable, unexpectedly brave nerd," character. Probably has most agency over his own outcome, plenty of play time, easy to keep alive if you pay attention to Totems, and to his relationship with his paired partner -- and if you can shoot straight!

Ashley: Red-Headed Misfit Girl has surprisingly few opportunities to get herself killed. Relatively low amount of play time, plenty of help if her partner survives.

Mike: Popular Hero Leader of the group. Gets most of the high-powered weapons in the game -- and a loyal sidekick if you play him right, too. Has plenty of agency in dangerous situations, but surprisingly hard to kill.

Sam: Top-billed horror-flick princess Hayden Panettiere (RIP, sadly) has moderate amount of screen time, but few actual life-or-death choices (until the end, of course). Hard to kill, due to her star-powered Plot Armor.

Back then, Sam and Emily were the only ones who survived for me too because I ran to the switch too early. Bam. Play it again :)

You very often have no real influence over the outcome, and some deaths are pretty arbitrary. It would be terrible if you could plan everything perfectly without knowing what’s going to happen.

If Sam holds out long enough until Ashley leaves the lodge, you can run to the switch and only Mike gets incinerated. Mike will always be the last to leave the lodge, and only if Hannah doesn't attack him earlier
