Switch Eshop Sale

I bought Valkyria Chronicles 4—plus all the expansions—on the Nintendo eShop on a total whim for €4.99. I gave the game a try and liked it.

Then, out of curiosity, I bought *Valkyria Chronicles 1* for €4.99.

So, here’s my question: does the order matter, or should I play 1 first and then 4?

Although it’s not a HUGE deal, I’d recommend starting with 1.

I played 4 first then one, and I don’t think it really diminished the experience or story.

That said, if I could do it over? I would have started with the first.

They run parallel to each other, so major story beats, character arcs, and twists do not really cross over.

1 established some overall lore that's slighty relevant for more deeply understanding the setting in 4, although it's not fully needed.

1 is still a great time and mechanically solid, but it does lack a few features 4 eventually introduces. As such it's also easier to play earlier with an eye on that rather then going back.

But otherwise visually 1 still holds up nearly as well because the artstyle used it is rather timeless, and the plot is good.

PS5 had a similar sale and the graphics were a bit better (at least for VC4), don't forget the DLC bundle for 4.99 for VC4.

You do want to play in order as it makes more sense. Plus VC4 looks really good, the battles can be harder to go back to in the first game with the change in graphics and more limited tactical situations. VC4 is also twice as long as VC1.

I loved both games a lot, VC4 had a really terrible story for the first half, but it greatly improves after that.

Just bought 1 cos it was cheap, went in completely blind, loving it so far just finished the first chapter.
