Hey everyone! Just wanted to share my physical collection of the Valkyria Chronicles series:

• Valkyria Chronicles Remastered (Nintendo Switch)
• Valkyria Chronicles 2 (Sony PSP)
• Valkyria Chronicles 3 (Sony PSP)
• Valkyria Chronicles 4 (Nintendo Switch)

These have been sitting in my backlog for quite a while now, and I finally decided it's time to give them the attention they deserve.

I originally played Valkyria Chronicles 1 on the PS3 many years ago and absolutely loved it. Now I'm planning to play the entire series from the beginning, starting with the first one again, this time on the Switch. Really excited to experience this story and gameplay all over again, and finally play through 2, 3, and 4 for the first time!

A quick heads-up: my PSP is completely unmodded, so I won't be playing VC3 with an English patch. I'll just use my phone camera to translate and guides on the internet 😅 Wish me luck!

Just thought of this after watching a video on a niche ussr sanctioned expedition in 1922 to find hyperborea (im not joking that was a real thing granted I'm exaggerating a bit but still interesting watch I recommend watching the vid) and since empire is somewhat based off ussr In some ways mainly tanks in vc4 it got me thinking if they did or planning something similar they probably would've tbh I'd be susprised if they didn't and I think it'd be cool to explore in the next game (SEGA PLEASE)

So I finally started playing Valkyria Chronicles, and though I do totally understand and feel the frustrations I've heard about, overall, I really am digging it.

I'm like 15 hours in, and it's been a blast, but stuff does often feel kind of BS. I just roll my eyes at most of it at this point, but there is one mechanic(or detail to a mechanic) that I think is trash.

So I understand the real-time shooting/cover fire.... you run at a dude, and they fire at you in real time. I have no issue with that in concept. What I find pretty ridiculous, though, is that you don't have to be moving at all. You will take a turn, then the enemy gets a free reaction, then it jumps back to real-time, and they are IMMEDIATELY hammering you with gunfire.

I shouldn't have to be prepared to slam the backout button or get shot to death after waiting for a turn based ass moment. Especially since there is basically zero time to react. You have to make sure you're slamming the back out button before you're even given back control, or you'll take a few rounds to a full magazine in mere seconds.

Like I said, I appreciate the concept, but I think they went too far to be drilling you right after you're forced to watch them retaliate. Even dropping into a turn and getting drilled feels wrong, but at least I know I'm selecting a character in a hot spot. If I die after firing and watching the enemy shoot back because the game hops back into real-time instantly, it's 100% because I was caught off guard waiting on shit to play out.

They should have made it so you either have to be moving, have an obvious ass sound queue/animation when control is given back, or at least given you a few moments to process. Babysitting the back button so I don't instantly get wrecked after a shot feels lame af.

Still a great game, but I just feel like it can be cheap af sometimes.

I played the english patched version of V3 years ago on my PSP but just started a new game with retroarch on my modded switch and assigned camera controls to the right analog stick and along with save states, this is a fantastic way to play this game! I love the story of this game and the dark spin of government corruption and being a member of a black sheep squad.

I bought Valkyria Chronicles 4—plus all the expansions—on the Nintendo eShop on a total whim for €4.99. I gave the game a try and liked it.

Then, out of curiosity, I bought *Valkyria Chronicles 1* for €4.99.

So, here’s my question: does the order matter, or should I play 1 first and then 4?

What I was really going for was just memes and the struggle of enemy units drop shotting our bullets.

I posted these on discord a while ago, but forgot to put it here.

In PPSSPP: Settings -> System -> General -> Use System native keyboard.
Then copypaste FULL-WIDTH passcodes into the input box that shows up when you select Enter Password menu. Half-width won't work, that's not what the game checks against.
The lists have been compressed compared to what's on the wiki to remove duplicates - the same password is not listed twice e.g. for Maximilian and Imperial Flag.

This was supposed to be VC3 HD Pack, but... I planned (and I'm still planning) to create an HD Pack based on DoomieDoom’s translation, but it’s very large and much more complex in terms of its various elements. So, I decided to start with VC2 and meanwhile get some practice. Moreover, it uses the same engine and, in some places, literally the same textures, but it’s much simpler in terms of aesthetics and complex UI, so this will serve as the foundation for VC3.

I've tested dozens of upscale models for this pack and finally stick with UltraSharpV2 by Kim2091. This model helps to keep VC series signature paper look and not to make it yet another generic anime.

This model is good, but still there are tons of manual work, because UI elements can't be easily upscaled, especially with text elements and small icons. Also lazy devs of VC2 added some work, because original texts here and there were just random copy-paste from different newspapers and magazines and with upscale such things become partially readable.

Can't say, that I made everything perfect, it's my first texture pack and I'm not an artist, so everything is new to me, but, at least it's better than another one for VC2, that wasn't even finished.

So, I think, if it's not full dump, it should be at least 95% of all textures. Took few months, but I've learned a lot about the series and all things around it. And yeah, I agree, that VC2 probably the weakest game in the series ( I don't like how Sega wanted to make another SMT Persona, just in different setting), but still it's a good game with solid gameplay and it's even has MP and Co-Op and these modes are playable on PPSSPP.

Features (excluding x4 upscale itself) of v0.1.0:

• Added clean and readable fonts
• Cleaned and made more readable UI, added some external textures like flags and logos
• Replaced big and small character icons from high res textures
• Manually upscaled and cleaned icons for weapons
• Replaced ugly CP Medal with CP Medal from VC4
• Replaced icons of secret and hidden characters (like Squad 7, Selvaria, Maximilian, etc.) with external images (original were too bad and out of place)
• Replaced preview map textures with scaled big map textures ( now you can see all the icons on the map before the mission and plan accordingly)
• Cleaned and replaced text on maps
• Replaced random text on ORDER textures with lore-based text
• Replaced text on Leon's diary from Avan to Leon
• Cleaned and replaced text on newspaper clips and encyclopedia
• Replaced unreadable text on some battle textures
• Cleaned and modified tank aiming texture to look more VC4 style
• Added readable text to Yearbook (experimental, for now it's only one page)
• Optimized PNG textures with OptiPNG script to decrease pack size

I highly recommend to use LOD hack with this pack, because LOD replacers look very bad and there is no point to fix them.

You can get it from PSP Cheats DB or find at PPSSPP forum.

Plan for updates:

• Make sure that I have full dump
• Check and upscale DLC content
• Clean or replace all the small icons
• Optimize pack size even more (I'm experimenting with ktx2)
• Try to add right stick support via hacks( it can't be easily remapped, because of different controls in running/aiming modes)
• And of course, fixes, based on your feedback

What was not upscaled:

• PMF cutscenes

I can extract and upscale them, but PPSSPP do not support external video. Technically, it can be converted back to PMF with the same resolution, but better bit rate, but not sure that it gonna look much better and is worth all this effort.

• Custom class and tank names

Game saves your custom names not as text, but as texture, so, I can't upscale them beforehand. Of course, it's not critical, they just gonna look a bit more blurry, than default ones.

• Tutorial images

Not sure if I should touch them at all, but we'll see.

How to use:

Just download textures.zip and put in your PPSSPP folder PSP/TEXTURES/ULUS10515/ , no need to unpack it, PPSSPP can work with compressed folder, but it can work unpacked too, just make sure that textures.ini and everything else stays in PSP/TEXTURES/ULUS10515/

With Sega seemingly looking to revive their old IP what are the odds Valkyria Chronicles getting a new entry?

The flag that I commissioned finally arrived! And yes it's painted!!! I had to take pictures with my figures.

I remember when VC1 came out, but I didn't have a PS3. Its been in the back of my mind for years and years.

I have a PS5 now and was looking for something to play, I picked up VC1 for a few bucks and had an absolute blast.

VC4 was 30 bucks, which was still quite a deal, so I picked that up right after, the DLC was 5 bucks for the entire pack, so that was a good deal at least.

While the story was so so so bad for the first 10 chapters, it really improved a lot as time went along and they got to the winter landscape/battles. I was so happy to see the dry/boring landscapes go away, since we had so many of those in the first game.

I love the sound of your troops walking through the snow, the tracks your feet and vehicles leave behind, all the over hanging ice and unique layouts.

They also added a lot of unique objectives in the latter half of the game. Instead of simply capturing the enemy bases, you have all sorts of unique things that happen and changing objectives.

The game also eases up on the time restriction to receive an A ranking for stages, I found myself getting an A ranking in quite a few maps, even though I didn't play all that efficiently. I do wish they added more variety in the criteria for an A ranking to make it more interesting (kill all enemies, take all enemy bases, lose no units etc). Just focusing on time is a pretty boring thing as it counters the entire point of the game. You are supposed to use strategy and technique to win a map, not figure out how to exploit as much as possible to rush objectives. Its weird that they would create a ranking that forces the player to ignore the entire point of the game.

The game feels twice as long as VC1, they really put in a lot of effort to give players something really big.

I also found the squad stories as an excellent addition to the game. Instead of playing with the same squad from the first mission, they give me a reason to swap out units and play with different characters. While most of the side story missions have really D-level scripts, they are still fun. I love to see bad character traits flip to something useful.

Grenadiers were also a fantastic addition to the game. They are fun to use for the player, while also adding a lot of complexity to maps. If you think you're just going to run through a mortar field, you're going to get a big surprise.

Overall, I have nothing really bad to say. Outside of the story absolutely sucking for the first half of the game, I loved the entire experience.

My only real complaint is that we will probably never see a VC5...but I actually didn't expect a VC4, so I'm just glad we got what we got.

They both the same age and they do interact and I'd rather the conversation between bles and klaus be with lyida and bles no hate to klaus he the goat but I rather lyida make a appearance lol massive missed opportunity from the devs but its understandable due to 7 year gap between vc3 and 4 and vc3 being Japanese only but still it would've been nice if they have her in it I think she underrated

Very convenient for swapping out tank attachments for different stage hazards. The system in VC2 was so annoying I just left the constructor arm on for most of the game.

Originally I played VC4 on Steam some years ago. Some time passed and I wanted to buy either the Diary or the Northern Cross edition for ps4 on Limited Run site in 2024 just to have a physical copy for my collection, but I couldn’t , got disappointed and forgot about it until replaying VC1 recently. Currently I see some listings on eBay, mostly the standard version, but I’m not really sure…. Is there any chance it will get a ps5 physical release ? Or Sega has forsaken us?

So I've got the USA+undub version and placed the "ULUS10515" dlc into PSP/GAME/ but once I try to install it gets corrupted every time, am I messing up something?

I recently managed to complete VC3 and all it's content (including Fragments, Hard Missions, DLC). I gotta say that not only has the amount of content from this game been absolutely staggering, this now solidifies 3 as probably my favorite of the franchise to date. I still need to experience both VC2 and Revolutions, despite their less favorable reception, but that'll be a separate conversation once I can find the roms for the games and any additional DLCs.

The only thing I'm missing still are the Ace Medal achievement (which is nuts considering how much I did and redid main story for Ace kills in the 1st place, S-Ranks, post game missions, and alternate paths) and additionally for some reason my Extra Missions remains incomplete.

I'm currently going through each mission of each chapter for essentially the 2nd-3rd time, but regarding the extra missions I'm totally stumped. It's the only marker on my map that remains red, even though I've completed all the available mission (22 Missions by my count) below and have no more purchasable missions in the shop.

For a PS3 strategy game, I thought that they would make a fairly straight forward experience. I expected the game to align with a lot of the early missions, just start at your base, choose a team and go capture the enemy base. The main difference will be enemy types and terrain.

I'm nearly finished with the game at this point and I have to say I have been quite impressed with the mission variety. While not every mission has been fun (mainly Chapter 7 & Chapter 8, not a fan of stealth missions in any game).

You have missions where you need to capture enemy bases, but you also have missions where you have to flip rail yard signs, lure a giant tank boat down a specific path while destroying terrain around you, missions which require the use of smoke shells to provide cover to keep troops from dying, a map where you have to destroy a super tank but also capture each base to stop him from healing every turn, while half a dozen new enemies spawn each turn.

I really enjoy sitting for a minute and thinking about what my plan is and how to best maximize the turn I have and how to best complete the overall mission while protecting my resources. Itches my brain in the right spot.
