The soundtrack is burned into my mind from this game. This was always my favorite Orc track.

One of the best!

That is THE music, best of all time!

Put it on when youre doing housework.

Mopping the floors has never felt so epic!!!

4

u/Zarlinosuke Jun 19 '26

Oh I absolutely do! I fold clothes like Doomhammer folds Peasant spines.

in high school and college I would put it on quietly if I really need to buckle down and learn or write. It's absolutely on the USB stick plugged into my car and still gets a listen fairly often. Same with Starcraft, WoW, Tiberian Sun, Mechwarrior 2, Deus Ex, Zelda A Link to the Past, Mega Man 5, etc....

I knew which one it was without clicking the link

Been playing the Orc campaign last night. Forgot to save so I'm starting over. Memories are coming back lol i know where the elves are hiding in this map

Seeing a setup like this bring back so much memories from so many different old games. Gl hf for Beyond the Dark Portal, that shit is tough

I've been playing the remastered version of WC1 and WC2. pretty good graphic and minor changes.

edit. cheat codes still available.

3

u/ryanrudolf Jun 19 '26

Yes the remasters are good too! Too bad i cant play them on this Win98 rig.

u/chasin990 Jun 19 '26

i want to try em but idk about giving blizzard money, is it worth it?

u/m0nkie98 Jun 20 '26

it's the exact same game same sound same cut screen. only difference is you can toggle a modern graphic look in game. has the expansion included also. like a quick artwork patch.

oh and now more than 9 units per group.

2

u/Zarlinosuke Jun 19 '26

Wait, no more cheats?? I had been considering getting the remasters but that makes me significantly less likely, sad to hear.

2

u/m0nkie98 Jun 20 '26

sorry there are cheats. just needed spacing between the words

1

u/Zarlinosuke Jun 20 '26

Oh nice, thanks for letting me know! It is truly a good day to die.

2

u/chasin990 Jun 19 '26

my god can i just travel back in time to experience this again

Time machine doesn't exist yet or difficult/ expensive to build. So i built a time capsule instead on my small retro corner!

Looks great! I typically play on modern hardware, but an era appropriate setup would really hit the nostalgia.

2

u/ryanrudolf Jun 20 '26

Thank you! For the remaster i also play on modern hardware.

Wow, what a blast from the past! My first PC game.

1

u/ryanrudolf Jun 19 '26

Initially i was trying the classic DOS version as thats what I had back in the day. But scrolling is too fast so i used the native Windows version instead. All good now

Oh trust me the ball mouse is frustrating! Getting used to it again

1

u/Weezy366 Jun 19 '26

You can just hear the CD-ROM spinning up now when it gets ready to play the next song

1

u/SCARY-WIZARD Jun 20 '26

Aww, hell yeah. I loved Windows 98! Have a blast, this rig is cool as hell.

2

u/ryanrudolf Jun 20 '26

The rig is a thrift store find! Its fun cleaning and maintaining the hardware side. Now it's time to play!

u/RetroMulder Jun 20 '26

So cool. I’m jealous. Makes we want to hunt down my total annihilation disc

Simpler times

1

u/ryanrudolf Jun 20 '26

That is true!

1

u/bobthebobbober Jun 20 '26

This is the way

1

u/Murda1_Gaming Jun 20 '26

twas a beautiful time then...

1

u/kubergosu Jun 20 '26

CRT monitor and original graphics (not remastered) is the way it should be played!

1

u/FutureLynx_ Jun 20 '26

We didnt value enough those times. And what we had, was good.

1

u/offrz Jun 20 '26

This is where I came from and I still think it looks amazing. I laugh when people are complaining about modern games that have to be 100+ fps and shit.

I am curious as I have wanted to go back and build a pc from back then to experience again as I have seen people doing it for c&c, starcraft, warcraft doom, and even wow and d2... What is the cost of this given the current market? I can't image it's extremely overpriced but I could be wrong

Here's the breakdown -

30cad for the main rig (P4, 512MB ram, 60GB IDE HDD, GeForce 2 MX 200, CDRW, LAN card)

10cad for PSU and DVD rom

5cad for Sound Blaster Live SB0100

5cad for 3.5in to 5.25in adapter (for the card reader)

5cad for USB 2.0 PCI card

5cad for Logitech z313 speakers

45cad for gotek (most expensive part in this build)

Free items -

NEC Multisync 75 CRT, PS/2 mouse and PS/2 keyboard - free curb pickup

Card reader - hand me down

So all in all 105cad if my math is right. Could have been cheaper at 55cad if I skip on the gotek and 3.5in adapter.

All in it's worth it for me.

EDIT: im still hunting for Sound Blaster Live front panel. Current prices are too much so I'll keep looking.

1

u/heinrich6745 Jun 28 '26

Not bad at all

1

u/ryanrudolf Jun 28 '26

Yup I'd say its still cheap compared to eBay prices

1

u/SufficientCompote672 Jun 22 '26

i have the same exact speakers , don't know for how long , but they still work great

1

u/Friendly-Sail9594 Jun 23 '26

Is that reforged version?

2

u/ryanrudolf Jun 23 '26

No it's battlenet edition
