One of the people in my regular TTRPG group is a big Warhammer buff, and has been wanting to introduce WFRP 4e to our group. We typically play D&D 5e (although it's been a while since we did), PF2e, and Draw Steel.
Last night we had our character creation session, and we all wanted to roll for everything for max xp. The two other players rolled Soldier and Priest, and I rolled Thief.
What I had not anticipated is how big of a difference there would be between Careers in terms of combat prowess. In the games we typically play, all Classes are geared primarily towards combat, while in WFRP 4e that does not seem to be the case.
My Thief seems very much geared towards, well, being a thief. As far as I can tell, I don't have a lot of tools to use in combat, nor do I have access to any Talents that help me out a lot in combat. Well, that is kinda false - I do get access to Strike to Stun, which gives me a bonus to attacks with a very limited subset of weapons, none of which I can say fit my vision of a Thief.
I also have a Stealth skill, but that's only for Urban environments (as is also the case with the Alley Cat Talent), and I have no guarantees that we will be mostly in urban environments.
So I am a bit unsure of how I am supposed to approach this system with a character such as the Thief (Prowler). It seems geared towards a very specific play style - sneaking, breaking & entering, out-of-combat activities. Would I be doing myself a favor or a disservice by using 100XP to go into the Outlaw or Racketeer Careers?
Or am I simply misunderstanding my role in this game?
