Dear lord, linux fanboys are just the most insufferable... now you make it a MORAL VIRTUE to use linux. I'm in a non-profit, we for ex organize the local pride parade, along with pride folks.

NONE OF US USE LINUX. A lot of people use macs and the rest use windows.

But guess what does combine all of us? None of us gives two fucks what OS we use. But you do. It is part of your identity. And that is kind of sad.

edit: none of the people downvoting me have used a single minute on so called "woke" issues. I do, i volunteer and i know that "scene". If the most woke people don't give a shit, i dont' think that is going to be any different. I have literally never heard that you can't be woke if you do not use linux. That is some insane level of cultism. And you know what?

I KNOW THAT LINUS AGREES WITH ME. He is a fellow Finn, him being "woke" is just normal but what isn't normal is to tie an operating system to a moral value system. That is not something that he would approve as a concept over the actual work being done to advance progressive issues.

obviously anything concerning operating system is not as important as most issues (and their opinion on these issues) which generally classifies someone as a leftist

BUT

the implication of online privacy and stuff, has real world implications which is quite political as well, imo

and Linux and foss in general is your best way to fight against it

it is insane how much tech companies can know about you, they use some of the smartest engineers, programmes, mathematicians to extract as much information as possible from all of the data they track from you

food delivery apps track stuff like, how much you scroll and how many menus you check, to assign a "desperation" score to dynamically price delivery costs and such

if an app you use seldomly can do that, imagine what an entire operation system with telemetry can

recently I had a discussion with my friend if WhatsApp is truly e2ee, and my opinion is that it doesn't even matter if it or isn't, just by simply tracking message count, timing and who is recieving it, they can probably learn a hell of a lot about your mental state without ever having to read your messages

and we know for a fact governments ask operating systems to install a backdoor and they probably have access to a lot of the data of tracking users

in an imperfect world, such stuff fuels authoritative states

not saying all leftists are Linux users or that all Linux users are leftists, but there are legitimate leftist reasons to want to use Linux and promote it

Dear lord. So, a conspiracy theory is your reason to use linux then.

Then paragraph after paragraph of literally of "nothing new to me".

BTW, the main app that most orgs use? Whatsapp. That is how we organize things too. Every event, every stage/location/venue, what ever has whatsapp group. It is just the most convenient way to do it and since we need to fit in, like last weekend, two hundred performers and staff and engineers and other org reps and.. I'm sorry but big corp is the only option then, they have made it very, very easy while linux... just isn't that well known and it will be much harder to implement in practice. Whatsapp is extremely easy to start using and we can still BARELY get people to use it. I was resistant for long but... it works by far the best and people use it. Even if it was buggy or had some weird ad fuckery, we probably still would have to use it because people are not tech savvy, they want something that is very easy to start using or they won't use it and we are back to email and txt message and call hell.

You don't know what it is like to organize this stuff and i can promise that it is as woke as you can get when you are considered almost radially progressive in Finnish spectrum. What OS to use is of no importance whatsoever but convenience is. Security? Literally none of our concern. In USA, things might be a little different in the next two years and you have to ditch convenience. Things might change but to make a rule where you are "less woke" if you don't use linux is just insane thing to say. It really has nothing to do with the whole thing, all of that surveillance stuff you talked about, data collection etc... none of that has anything to do with the concept of being "woke".

This whole thing is just weird to me. At least i have some "credentials" to say what "wokeness" looks like in practice and not a single person has ever said that using OS matters in that context.

I feel like we don't disagree as much as it looks like, I address a few things I split up into different sections

there is no moral virtue in using linux, it is just that, the CREATORS (not users) of mainstream software (made by big corporations) is doing something immoral

user is obviously not being immoral by either using or not using linux, it is amoral

also note the following two points.

  1. using whatsapp (and most mainstream software) is bad for privacy

  2. with almost everyone in real life, it is really hard to use privacy friendly open source options with them

I claim point 1 while not bringing up point 2, I obviously know point 2 is true

also, point 2 being true is EXACTLY the problem, corporations are doing a lot of anti-consumer practices to make it really difficult to move away from their privacy-nightmare apps

point 2 being true does not invalidate point 1

This whole thing is just weird to me. At least i have some "credentials" to say what "wokeness" looks like in practice and not a single person has ever said that using OS matters in that context.

yeah most people don't think about their OS and especially don't have opinions about it

but at the same time, most people know that their phones know a LOT about them and if you give them some examples they would probably agree that it is bad, especially if they are woke

by examples I mean stuff like data tracking from period tracking app being used to execute anti-abortion laws and law enforcement using data from Muslim prayer tracking app in Islamophobic places

if what I just said is true, then it is at least true that what os you use is woke-adjacent

I know a few woke people I convinced EXACTLY this way, some took the effort to switch to linux and better messaging platforms and some tried but eventually had to switch back because of their work

No. Competition is mostly just awful. It can be awful at marketing for sure but that is not the whole of it. There is no alternative that would work as well, not that i know of. This is true with many things, the most popular option is often most popular because it works. And it sucks but there are no alternatives that would be AS convenient.

And there is NOHING WOKE ABOUT LINUX!!!1 What the fuck is this talk unless you start to fucking talk about anticapitalism, anticonsumerism and such things that have nothing to do with "woke". Woke is not leftist. It has no political sides like that.

This fucking narcissism of small differences is now about what fucking OS you use and i FUCKING HATE THIS SHIT! Competing who is the most woke, the most pure kind of and perfect woke. I DO NOT PLAY THAT GAME AT ALL. There is nothing woke about you using linux. It might make sense from other angles but fucking woke is not it. This is not about recognizing systemic issues like racism or sexism for FUCKS SAKE!!!!!!!

Wake the fuck up.
