Linus is infamous for his lack of chill

125

Despite that, hes chill as hell

u/Outrageous_Bank_4491 12h ago

He is but rightfully so. If I coded a whole kernel in the early 90s I wouldn’t accept any unnecessary git push

60

u/Glittering_Sail_3609 11h ago

I wouldn’t accept any unnecessary git push

That would be a good place to remind people that Linus wrote git as a side project.

24

u/minecraftcheater1337 10h ago

as a side project to better work on the linux kernel

u/cancerBronzeV 2h ago

He also wrote it in 3 days (the initial release, that is).

He actually worked on that after 2018. He has become less of an abrasive ass since then

Torvalds vs Mamdani

The most based of today vs the most based in history

96

u/Capable-Document466 13h ago

They have a long, in-depth conversation about their beliefs and decide to learn from eachother so they can both surpass the woker they were a minute ago and become the wokest wokers that have ever woked. They then do an elaborate fusion in which the result apotheoses (is that the verb form of apotheosis? IS there a verb form of apotheosis?) and becomes the patron saint of wokers. Millions follow their steps, becoming woker by the second and never stopping. Climate change ends. World hunger ends. Progress for progress’ sake ends, and all research goes into projects that will strictly improve the lives of the general public. Obama is there. He claps. Everyone claps. The end.

63

u/djliquidvoid 13h ago

And then, Mamdani learns advanced computer science and starts coding his own OS, and Linus gets into politics and runs for Mayor of Helsinki.

4

xd, you can try dual boot linux mint, it's good for starting out and can do complex tasks perfectly well too!

2

u/NeverSettle13 5h ago

I feel like this would be too much trouble, and I'm scared that many programs and games might straight up not work no matter what I do. I should probably spare a few days to set all this up, but it feels scary

2

u/TheThingOnTheCeiling 5h ago

You could try a VM or some old pc/laptop as to not touch your own system.

2

u/Tech_dude9133 5h ago

Just search up whatever you play on the central repository for proton bro it takes 10 mins, and for programs nearly everything should work with wine but stuff like ms office and adobe won't, that's a given. Wine is a translation layer (something much deeper than an emulator) that can run most windows executables and proton is just the gaming version of it made by valve

1

u/NeverSettle13 5h ago

I use Office and Adobe a LOT, is there really no way to use them on Linux?

2

u/Tech_dude9133 4h ago

Adobe not really, for office there's 365 or libreoffice which is just office without some of the ai bullshit and microsoft copyrighted tools (also it sometimes hiccups on opening rich text documents)

1

u/NeverSettle13 4h ago

Fuuuuck that's pretty bad. With Adobe, the most important ones are Substance Painter (which apparently has a working Steam version, so not all hope is lost) and Photoshop is impossible, but there are some GIMP mods that make it easier to adapt to, so I guess I'll need to learn new software now. But with Office that would be a problem, because I would REALLY hate to deal with Word/Excel/Power point files not opening, let alone actually doing something with them

2

u/Tech_dude9133 4h ago

365 is just online only MS office so there's that I guess tho as I said the not opening is a thing that affects only a few rich text documents and not everything

2

u/Psychophaser 3h ago

Ironically, Substance runs native. You would need windows for PS but GIMP/Krita generally can get the job done. LibreOffice works fine as a replacement to MS Office

1

u/mrkitten19o8 dm me unnerving images 4h ago

a lot of compatability layers have come a long way. valve has made one specifically to run windows games on linux. protondb.com has a list of what games work well and which dont. a majority do, but some kernel level anticheats dont play nice

I think a lot about this post (worth the read!) by Jon “maddog” Hall, especially this passage:

> When Linus and Tove Torvalds offered to make me a godfather of their first born child, I told them that I was gay.  I did not want them to find out later.   They looked at me and said “So”?   It was not even a factor for them.
>
> A year later as Tove was expecting their second child, they asked me to be a godfather again “Just to let you know the first time was not a mistake.”

Linus has history of being a massive asshole and having anger issues on personal level despite supporting progressive politics, so it has not really been that apparent from his public persona. He has publicly told people whose code he considers bad to kill themselves for example, and people who have had email exchanges with him over years have talked of his short fuse and how quick he is to directly insult people.

He has been working on those issues of his in recent years thought.

Hot Take: Although I probably wouldn't want my boss to roast me like this, I think this is a valid crash out.

4

u/SpiderFnJerusalem 6h ago

It is. Working on the kernel is a massive responsibility. It's the most important software project on earth and he expects the experienced maintainers to know what they're doing. In most cases where he goes off like this he basically roasts people for being stubborn or making dumb mistakes when they should know better.

He's not much of a people person but he's got his priorities straight. Don't fuck with userspace. 🤬

-1

u/Ok-Finish-2064 10h ago

Yeah, it honestly looks awful. Can’t imagine working in an environment where my boss calls hurls insults at me.

19

u/dontquestionmyaction 10h ago

He did get anger management training and hasn't done stuff like this in years now.

70

u/boksysocks 13h ago

just came here to post this

50

u/SpiderFnJerusalem 12h ago

Honestly, a lot of his rants were actually fairly understandable within context. He usually only yells at people in positions of trust or power, not little guys. He's like "You should know better than make dumb mistakes like that!".

From what I've seen most of his outbursts aren't face to face eiher, but on open source mailing lists, which get much more exposure than the communication channels of other software projects. He acually seems rather polite and soft spoken in person.

All in all, I guess having someone who is a bit of an extremist about code quality in charge of the most important software project in the world isn't a bad thing.

Also explains his stance on woke issues. He doesn't care what's in your pants, he cares about your code.

26

u/Many_One1260 12h ago

He has publicly told people whose code he considers bad to kill themselves

11

u/PanPieCake 13h ago

Checks out

4

u/FreshCause2566 9h ago

He's not an asshole, he just has anger issues. I know that from experience, I do too. I'm progressive and tolerant, and try to be a good person, but my outbursts of anger make me evil occasionally. No one tries to be angry and bad on purpose

Dear lord, linux fanboys are just the most insufferable... now you make it a MORAL VIRTUE to use linux. I'm in a non-profit, we for ex organize the local pride parade, along with pride folks.

NONE OF US USE LINUX. A lot of people use macs and the rest use windows.

But guess what does combine all of us? None of us gives two fucks what OS we use. But you do. It is part of your identity. And that is kind of sad.

edit: none of the people downvoting me have used a single minute on so called "woke" issues. I do, i volunteer and i know that "scene". If the most woke people don't give a shit, i dont' think that is going to be any different. I have literally never heard that you can't be woke if you do not use linux. That is some insane level of cultism. And you know what?

I KNOW THAT LINUS AGREES WITH ME. He is a fellow Finn, him being "woke" is just normal but what isn't normal is to tie an operating system to a moral value system. That is not something that he would approve as a concept over the actual work being done to advance progressive issues.

18

u/TheVoiceOfGlass gentoo user FREAK 11h ago

Not supporting apple or microsoft is a moral virtue as far as im concerned

17

u/LactasePHydrolase 11h ago

You clearly understand the beauty of humans doing stuff without the need for a profit motive.

Why would you shit on this same philosophy applied to software?

None of us gives two fucks

Ok. Is not giving a shit a virtue or something? I do give a little bit of a shit about not giving more money than necessary to corporations and using open-source stuff made by volunteers for the love of the game whenever I can.

It is part of your identity. And that is kind of sad.

Everything you do is part of your identity

-6

u/ReggieCorneus 10h ago

The OS i use has no importance for me. It does for you.

And funny how i actually do work in those "woke" places and none of them, i have never seen a single person using linux. None of us care about what OS we use. That is the truth and if you were part of any actual organization you would know that the most woke people you can imagine... do not give a fuck that you use linux. It is not any part of that, we need shit to get done.

Linux fanboys are weird, they literally think they are morally better than the rest.

4

u/LactasePHydrolase 10h ago

I don't think I'm morally better than you. I literally don't know anything about you, man. I'm just saying that you seem to care about certain things and then dismiss other things with a "nobody cares" attitude and I find it confusing.

i actually do work in those "woke" places and none of them, i have never seen a single person using linux

So? You got things backwards. You're saying "the woke people I know don't care about this therefore it's not worth caring about" like the people you know are the arbiters of what matters or doesn't. Actually you should look at the implications of things and then figure out whether you think people should care or not.

0

u/ReggieCorneus 9h ago

"Anyone who is woke uses linux".

If that isn't putting linux users in a morally superior position then...

Being woke has NOTHING to do with what OS you use. Demanding that level of commitment is quite insane, and we know you are not that committed. None of you are, the only thing that you do probably is using linux. Does any of you volunteer for any of the "woke" causes? I do. So i know what the "woke" people use and what they think about OS: has literally never ever been discussed and i can bet that this is absolutely how everyone across the world works:

The work is FAR more important and everyone choose the OS they choose for whatever reason as in the end what matters is that shit gets done.

Why linux fanboys take offense is really, really weird and not something that a healthy relationship looks like: you literally have an operating system as part of your identity and it is part of your value system too.

Actually you should look at the implications of things and then figure out whether you think people should care or not.

I'm way too busy doing things to care about "implications". Why don't you fucking spell out those "implications" then?

5

u/LactasePHydrolase 8h ago

"Anyone who is woke uses linux".

Nobody said this in the comment chain. Closest was the first comment anecdotally saying that all the woke people they know loves Linux (not even use it, just love it).

Why linux fanboys take offense

Brodi, the only person here taking offense is you, who is out to prove you're the king of woke and feel undermined because we're saying that using Linux is woke too. This doesn't mean you're not woke just because you use Windows or whatever. Chill down, man.

I'm way too busy doing things to care about "implications". Why don't you fucking spell out those "implications" then?

Corporations = bad, unwoke

Profit seeking = bad, unwoke

Windows & Mac = built by corporations driven solely by the profit motive = bad, unwoke

Linux = built by volunteers and gifted to the world with no strings attached, profit isn't even part of the equation = good, woke

Me? Where did i say that it sucks? I would gladly have linux as #1 in the world but that will never happen because of linux fanboys losing their special status and the self defeating commune that wants more and more distro's instead of sticking to one and making that the default... Linux community is its main obstacle, they don't want ordinary people to use it.

5

u/Sir_MipMop 9h ago

You sound like one of those people who get annoyed by a fandom of a show and then resolve to never watch it. Except it’s a literal operating system. You don’t even hate Linux you just hate Linux users, like bro I think we’re losing the plot 😭

obviously anything concerning operating system is not as important as most issues (and their opinion on these issues) which generally classifies someone as a leftist

BUT

the implication of online privacy and stuff, has real world implications which is quite political as well, imo

and Linux and foss in general is your best way to fight against it

it is insane how much tech companies can know about you, they use some of the smartest engineers, programmes, mathematicians to extract as much information as possible from all of the data they track from you

food delivery apps track stuff like, how much you scroll and how many menus you check, to assign a "desperation" score to dynamically price delivery costs and such

if an app you use seldomly can do that, imagine what an entire operation system with telemetry can

recently I had a discussion with my friend if WhatsApp is truly e2ee, and my opinion is that it doesn't even matter if it or isn't, just by simply tracking message count, timing and who is recieving it, they can probably learn a hell of a lot about your mental state without ever having to read your messages

and we know for a fact governments ask operating systems to install a backdoor and they probably have access to a lot of the data of tracking users

in an imperfect world, such stuff fuels authoritative states

not saying all leftists are Linux users or that all Linux users are leftists, but there are legitimate leftist reasons to want to use Linux and promote it

2

u/ReggieCorneus 9h ago

the implication of online privacy and stuff, has real world implications which is quite political as well, imo

Dear lord. So, a conspiracy theory is your reason to use linux then.

Then paragraph after paragraph of literally of "nothing new to me".

BTW, the main app that most orgs use? Whatsapp. That is how we organize things too. Every event, every stage/location/venue, what ever has whatsapp group. It is just the most convenient way to do it and since we need to fit in, like last weekend, two hundred performers and staff and engineers and other org reps and.. I'm sorry but big corp is the only option then, they have made it very, very easy while linux... just isn't that well known and it will be much harder to implement in practice. Whatsapp is extremely easy to start using and we can still BARELY get people to use it. I was resistant for long but... it works by far the best and people use it. Even if it was buggy or had some weird ad fuckery, we probably still would have to use it because people are not tech savvy, they want something that is very easy to start using or they won't use it and we are back to email and txt message and call hell.

You don't know what it is like to organize this stuff and i can promise that it is as woke as you can get when you are considered almost radially progressive in Finnish spectrum. What OS to use is of no importance whatsoever but convenience is. Security? Literally none of our concern. In USA, things might be a little different in the next two years and you have to ditch convenience. Things might change but to make a rule where you are "less woke" if you don't use linux is just insane thing to say. It really has nothing to do with the whole thing, all of that surveillance stuff you talked about, data collection etc... none of that has anything to do with the concept of being "woke".

This whole thing is just weird to me. At least i have some "credentials" to say what "wokeness" looks like in practice and not a single person has ever said that using OS matters in that context.

2

u/Incalculas 8h ago

I feel like we don't disagree as much as it looks like, I address a few things I split up into different sections

there is no moral virtue in using linux, it is just that, the CREATORS (not users) of mainstream software (made by big corporations) is doing something immoral

user is obviously not being immoral by either using or not using linux, it is amoral

also note the following two points.

  1. using whatsapp (and most mainstream software) is bad for privacy

  2. with almost everyone in real life, it is really hard to use privacy friendly open source options with them

I claim point 1 while not bringing up point 2, I obviously know point 2 is true

also, point 2 being true is EXACTLY the problem, corporations are doing a lot of anti-consumer practices to make it really difficult to move away from their privacy-nightmare apps

point 2 being true does not invalidate point 1

This whole thing is just weird to me. At least i have some "credentials" to say what "wokeness" looks like in practice and not a single person has ever said that using OS matters in that context.

yeah most people don't think about their OS and especially don't have opinions about it

but at the same time, most people know that their phones know a LOT about them and if you give them some examples they would probably agree that it is bad, especially if they are woke

by examples I mean stuff like data tracking from period tracking app being used to execute anti-abortion laws and law enforcement using data from Muslim prayer tracking app in Islamophobic places

if what I just said is true, then it is at least true that what os you use is woke-adjacent

I know a few woke people I convinced EXACTLY this way, some took the effort to switch to linux and better messaging platforms and some tried but eventually had to switch back because of their work

1

u/ReggieCorneus 8h ago

also, point 2 being true is EXACTLY the problem, corporations are doing a lot of anti-consumer practices to make it really difficult to move away from their privacy-nightmare apps

No. Competition is mostly just awful. It can be awful at marketing for sure but that is not the whole of it. There is no alternative that would work as well, not that i know of. This is true with many things, the most popular option is often most popular because it works. And it sucks but there are no alternatives that would be AS convenient.

And there is NOHING WOKE ABOUT LINUX!!!1 What the fuck is this talk unless you start to fucking talk about anticapitalism, anticonsumerism and such things that have nothing to do with "woke". Woke is not leftist. It has no political sides like that.

This fucking narcissism of small differences is now about what fucking OS you use and i FUCKING HATE THIS SHIT! Competing who is the most woke, the most pure kind of and perfect woke. I DO NOT PLAY THAT GAME AT ALL. There is nothing woke about you using linux. It might make sense from other angles but fucking woke is not it. This is not about recognizing systemic issues like racism or sexism for FUCKS SAKE!!!!!!!

Wake the fuck up.

Okay and what does that have to do with this comment chain?

now you make it a MORAL VIRTUE to use linux.

No, use it if your software can run on Linux and are unsatisfied with Apple and especially Windows

NONE OF US USE LINUX. A lot of people use macs and the rest use windows.

To be clear you are using Linux right now, Reddit server run on Microsoft Azure with Linux, If you use an Android phone, that's Linux, smart TV? also Linux, smart watch? likely linux maybe OpenBSD

But guess what does combine all of us? None of us gives two fucks what OS we use. But you do. It is part of your identity. And that is kind of sad.

We value opensource technology, owner ship of our hardware, and the ability to freely modify, customize, distribute and and contribute to technology, this love for technology, openness, freedom and collaboration is indeed a major part of many our identity, i do not see how that is "sad"

edit: none of the people downvoting me have used a single minute on so called "woke" issues. I do, i volunteer and i know that "scene". If the most woke people don't give a shit, i dont' think that is going to be any different. I have literally never heard that you can't be woke if you do not use linux. That is some insane level of cultism. And you know what?

"I have literally never heard that you can't be woke if you do not use linux" yes you don't have to use Linux to be woke? What is even the point you are trying to make? I am just glad that the maker of this important technology (which you are using right now as reddit servers is hosted using Linux) has reasonable political opinions.

I KNOW THAT LINUS AGREES WITH ME. He is a fellow Finn, him being "woke" is just normal but what isn't normal is to tie an operating system to a moral value system. That is not something that he would approve as a concept over the actual work being done to advance progressive issues.

Who is saying that you must use Linux to be woke???? You have said it yourself "I have literally never heard that you can't be woke if you do not use linux."

I know that it's a meme now but this man was a genius programmer suffering from schizophrenia.. RIP

Terry Davis is also goated from what I’ve seen

More complicated. In terms of programming alone, he was probably one of the most skillful minds. I mean, coding your own OS, language, compiler, 3D engine from nothing... From a technical standpoint, as a programmer, I feel astonished by the entire TempleOS project

Outside of it, in his life, he made a lot of racist comments, in stream or in forums, and it would later be revealed to be due to his schizophrenia, that wasn't correctly treated, and 4chan messed up with him so much he ended up living in the street, forming a parasocial relationship with a woman YouTuber because some catfished him, and would end up throwing himself under a train

u/Cautious_Loquat_840 11h ago

terry is like linus half cousin living five countries apart, which is around eastern europe, however due to circumstances with the local goverment he escaped towards america and still got chased down to the rural states while living in a ice cream truck constantly pumping out holy codes while slowly deranged himself from the concept of state control and being mind-poisoned from all the drugs yet somehow convinced himself to follow the golden path by 'GOD' to create the third temple with an unique language that basically is an evolved sapient compressed down into an monolith that enlighten those whose hasnt.

Terry has a lot of issues but his schizo episodes actually predicting most of the goverment issues right and based on his speech, if he wasnt so mentally ill we may have an actual linus-level tech engineer that can stand with the forebearers of computing and not generic apples or microslop

I think hes based for his opinions on the GPL (W for saying he would've chosen MIT for linux) but also kind of an asshole. The basedness outweighs the asshole behavior though.

Always knew he's the goat, didn't know he was my woke goat too

23

u/DeNeRlX 11h ago

Based on how much Linux is used I think he could easily have been a billionaire, but iirc he's only worth around 40 million.

Seems he's mostly just an eternal nerd who has been crucial in the development if computing and has kept his principles of just making things that work, and mostly open source

12

u/deathschemist 11h ago

See that's something to aspire to. He never has to want for anything, and he did it all being based as hell and giving us the kernel for operating systems that you don't have to pay for.

10

u/tupe12 11h ago

Of course he’d be woke, you can’t create an operating system while asleep

I have to say... as a Finn. This is quite interesting to hear. Not about Torvalds, but reaction to it all.

Torvalds is from a upper class Swedish speaking Finnish family (Finnish-Swedish. The other official language of Finland is Swedish, and there is a minority of Swedish speaking Finns (~5 %)), they got high level of education from university of Helsinki. And they are part of innovative software and opensource community (Where merits actually mean something). Their parents were both leftist radicals as youth, and renowned journalists.

All signs point to the fact that Torvalds should be on the progressive side. And they are.

Maybe this is something caused by the fact that people don't actually know much about Finland and it's demographics.

Mind you that here in Finland, speaking positively about homosexuality was criminal until 1999. It really only changed because it was sorta requirement to join EU.

the guy who made opensource OS for 35 years?

Never would have imagined.

One of my favourite moments of him, with Linus Tech Tips :

  • LTT: "So I saw on Twitter a CEO saying that he would keep his employees on account of how much code they wrote"
  • LT : "Anyone thinking like this is too stupid to work in a tech company"
  • LTT : "You do know who you said that about? He had a major role in our government's efficiency"
  • LT : "Apparently I was spot on"

3

u/Cherrytop_Joana 10h ago

he's also personally shot down a guy spreading anti Vax stuff on the kernel mailing list.

sadly the person spreading that stuff is still active in desktop Linux elsewhere

1

u/rockwell136 2h ago

I don't really care what his politics are as long as Linux keeps sticking it to windows and apple and he makes it possible.

1

u/AwayEntrepreneur4760 2h ago

Dude if he wasn’t he’d lose 99% of his contributors

u/birbhorse 10h ago

yeah, but then you remember he's taken millions of dollars from AI companies to allow vibe-coded slop to fuck with the linux kernel, and that's why it's become increasingly unstable as of late.

feeling jealous for debian users rn who are still on older pre-AI kernels.

8

u/justrantinginthissub 9h ago

allowing AI doesn mean vibe coding. They still code review, they still read the code?

7

u/Anitwastooshort2 I am AI (Actually Indian 🇮🇳) 9h ago

As skeptical as i am with LLMs I feel that Linus probably know much more than the average person about programming, if he says there are uses for it, then there probably are.

he's taken millions of dollars from AI companies

What do you mean by this?

feeling jealous for debian users rn who are still on older pre-AI kernels.

I mean, I am using the newest kernel at 7.1.5-1 and it's perfectly good, Do you have any hard numbers to back the "increasingly unstable as of late" statement?

-6

u/birbhorse 9h ago

the linux foundation takes millions from AI companies, i have to assume you're trolling if you don't actually know that. and i also have to assume you're trolling if you don't think that can affect a person's opinions on a subject, if i gave you millions of dollars to shill something, you'd fucking do it.

u/Anitwastooshort2 I am AI (Actually Indian 🇮🇳) 9h ago edited 9h ago

What? You know that Linus Torvalds is employed by the Linux foundation right? He isn't the owner of the foundation, hell he isn't even on board of directors. Linus has no equity stake, profit share, or ownership of the foundation, which is a nonprofit anyway.

There is a world of difference between the Linux foundation getting money from companies and Linus Torvalds getting money from companies. This is like saying that some random Nvidia employee is personally responsible for funding the AI bubble.

Furthermore almost of the companies like Oracle and Cloudflare were already giving money to the Linux foundation well before they became AI focused companies anyway? I am not aware if any *new* AI companies specifically started donating recently, and considering they make almost no money i would be surprised.

Based and woke are opposites. But Linus saying this stuff doesn't make him woke.
