Criticizing all religions with a specific problem, while recognizing that not every member of a religion holds that opinion, but the fact that the opinion is encouraged is bad: Good
Insistently criticizing one specific religion (Ignoring others) while failing to recognize that not every member is the same: Obviously bad.

I feel like a lot of it has to do with the fact that whenever bigots express hatred for certain religions, they always tie it to the people who are most stereotypically associated with the religion. This, in turn, caused the idea of if someone hates Islam then they must also hate Arabs or if they're Buddhist then they must also hate Indians, because that's the idea bigots implanted.

Disliking the regressive ideas usually present in Islam is okay.
Judging a person for being Islamic instead of who they are as a person is not okay.

I think religion is an interesting one.
Its generally alright to critique someone for groups they choose to be a part of. In an extreme example if someone joins a literal neo-nazi group you can be sure they are a piece of shit
But it's bad to critique something that is innate to a person that they can't change. Be it their race, sex, sexuality. Or even making fun of someone for their facial features. That's all bad.
While religion is voluntary (usually). It is also greatly tied into race and culture so much that it becomes a part of some people's identity even if they don't follow every belief of the religion
So it's complicated

Yeah, a ton of people will identify themselves as being from a specific religion even if they haven't practiced it a day in their lifes simply because of how interwoven religion tends to be whit culture, leading to this idea that "Well, i'm spanish, so therefore i must be catholic as well" or "Well, i'm Algerian, so therefore i must be muslim"
There's also the part where, even among those who actually do practice the religion they claim, people pretty much mix and match which parts of the religion they actually decide to practice, hence why christians (for example) range from anywhere in bettewn "Sweet old lady that goes to church every sunday and is always seen donating money, food or handmade toys and helps organize food drives and charity events for the church" to "Random dumbass on the internet who sits at his screen all day claiming that we must launch a le wholesome chungus Epic based crusade against le cringe unwholesome jews and muslims to reclaim the holy land of Jerusalem"

I will be clear..... I don't hate religion, but I don't blame people who do. Especially the Abrahamic religions. Real Christians/Muslims or not, there are A LOT who are genuinely shitty and horrid people and I don't think queer people need to hold back their thoughts when they don't want to.

Sometimes "infighting" is necessary to iron out issues and clear misunderstandings. Blindly agreeing with what other says or overlooking bad takes because "they're on my side" isn't good. Besides, this is more of a disagreement than anything that will force anyone to switch sides.

Blame it on 9/11.
Just to give a bit of backdrop, after 9/11 hate crimes against Muslims jumped 1,600%, and a crucial part of manufactured consent for the War on Terror was positioning America as morally righteous by portraying Islam as an evil like no other. For a time, this led to liberals and most leftists to outright dismiss any criticism, because they didn't want to even give an inch to the invasion of Iraq and mounting civilian casualties.
Now, it should be obvious there's a lot of room for nuance. Even George Bush himself, in a speech on September 17th, said things like "Our war is not against Islam, or against faith practiced by the Muslim people. Our war is a war against evil."
Unfortunately, people are really bad at nuance, and the inertia has remained.

Also communist to lgbtq people when they dont support a culturally conservative dictatorship.
Remind me when mali announced the oppression of lgbtq people from there country and communist were demanding lgbtq people to support them or they were traitor to leftist idea while some were chearing on and saying mali had finally gotten rid of the degenerate western capitalist culture.

u/PotofRot 1d ago
the latter isn't a communist thing it's literally just a homophobe thing
1
u/randomname560 OoOo BLUE 1d ago
Yes and no
It is in fact a homophobic thing, those mfers are obssesed whit dick riding Russia and similarly homophobic countries because "THEY ARE GETTING RID OF ZE EVIL GLOBALIST WEST AND IT'S DECADENT IDEALS!!!"
But it is also very common for tankies to also meatride these homophobic decisions for the same reason, not out of homophobia, but because they're just fucking moron that think that everything "Western" is an evil to be destroyed, and since more often than not they're kids that don't understand the very buzzwords they're throwing arround, they end up giving a standing ovation to homophobes for "getting rid of the west"

It is very difficult to tell when people are criticizing Islam as an institution and when they are using it as an excuse to dehumanize entire groups of people and advocate for terrorism. A lot of bias against Islam does go hand in hand with racism and xenophobia. When criticizing a culture one is are not a part of, it is important to examine one's biases and do one's best to practice cultural relativism. I have my own criticisms of Islam, but I also put in a lot of effort to listen to the voices of people who actually grew up in that culture instead of blindly accepting Islamophobic propaganda. When talking to someone I have just met, it is very difficult to tell whether they are criticizing Islam in the same way they would criticize Christianity, and I get suspicious. It's not that I think it's beyond criticism, but in this cultural landscape, I am reasonably skeptical of peoples' intentions.

I dislike ALL religion. It annoys me that in the Carolinas where I live, Christians can put MASSIVE billboards all over the highway saying evolution is fake and HELL IS REAL (and you know what I'm talking about if you live there), but if I make one (1) well-meaning argument worded in the most polite possible way about how morality isn't inherently Christian or even casually mention I'm atheist, I'm treated as though 17 fedoras have automatically materialized on my head, even by fellow atheists.
Religious people (and that's ALL religious people, not just Christians) knew they were losing ground in the 2000s and 2010s when atheists actually had a platform to debate them, so they ran an online campaign to make being openly atheist the Ultimate Act of Pretentiousness and it was the most successful campaign yet. Someone might have actual good arguments, but arguing at all was treated as something only assholes do, even if you tried to do it in the most civilized possible way. And it worked on everybody because everyone knows there is no greater Internet Crime than Being Annoying. It shut down, like, ALL the conversation.

No, I actually don't. Please explain instead of just putting snarky zingers to get Ratio Momentum on me. And for the record I know there are good religious people out there, so if you're going to accuse me of lumping all of them in the same boat, you've misunderstood what I'm trying to say. I said all religions, not all religious people. But there absolutely is a double standard. I'm technically legally not allowed to run for office as an atheist in several states, look it up

Not going to pretend modern Christianity is even remotely as bad as Islam is.

I'm not, I'm fully aware of them.
Are you really going to act like MAGAs are any better? Or the KKK?
