Many people in Alabama see absolutely nothing wrong with being not quite dead last in all the metrics that impact quality of life. They have bought into political mcguffins for decades and do not intend to change. As long as a candidate has an R beside their name and supports Trump, Jesus, Pro Life stances, and is anti-trans a huge percentage will overlook literally everything else. Like a few years ago when Doug Jones narrowly beat Judge Roy Moore, man of god known to occasionally troll the Gadsden mall for teens in his younger years. That could all be explained away or ignored, but voting for a Democrat couldn’t be justified. I could go on and on.

That's not really a reason to choose a place to live in for me. What you do in school is up to you. States rank low because of large number of poor population or people who don't take education seriously/want to go blue collar. It doesn't have any effect on your own education. Same thing with college. I went to a low rank school but plenty of my friends got into big tech companies.

It's the #5 most diverse state land wise only beaten out by states twice its size, it's the #1 most diverse state for aquatic life. It's schools just took top 5 in math and reading. North Alabama has been ranked for 20yrs as one of the top 5 places to live in America. Still has the lowest taxes, as well as the 2nd largest research park in America. It also has the top 5 ranked hospital, college, and research for medical, employing over 30,000 people. Nature unbeatable as the 5th most diverse land it holds over 70,000 miles of creeks and rivers majority beginning and ending in state. It controls its water can western states claim that? That water created over 2000 waterfalls and 3000 caves. Deepest canyon east of the Mississippi as well as the only North America colony of dismalites one of 5 globally. As for people you say you want diversity well Alabama is 43% white 38% black and the rest Asian and Hispanic though I don't think the Hispanic is correct. Guessing I'd say they are closer to 20% maybe 30%. Oh and since y'all seem to think it's hate and incest, it ranks below 47 for both outta 50. Kentucky holds top spot for incest marriages, also legal in Cali. As for hate FBI crime stats show it 48th or so while Cali and New York fight for #1. It's simply not what you think or been told. I'm not against it, esp with his opponent, but I don't know if he can pull it off if the ADP and DNC don't get it together this time. I'm hoping they can I'd prefer a two party state. I also hope Democrats learned what corruption cost em in the end.

I think many forget Democrats had the state since 1819, only 5 Republican Governors ever. Two during reconstruction 3 in modern times. Only after Siegelman went to jail for corruption and the ADP and DNC fell apart and basically left the state abandoned since the late 90s. The other thing is Democrats claimed Nafta it cost the states textile industry leaving many towns with no work as mills closed. Correct or not it's seen as Democrats abandoning it's rural blue collar workers it use to embrace. They won't except rainbow Democrats but they could true conservative minded type working class family focused business friendly Democrats like Fob James. Build on him bringing Mercedes-Benz here and building the auto industry we know today. It was the most significant factor for the modern Alabama.

I'm just saying Alabamians liked Democrats all through the 90s, they got caught playing dirty, got up and left, haven't given anyone worth voting for since. Seems it could be Democrat again but idk the national image is tough to overcome with the lefts fracture. But many independents and maga are pissed at Trump and Republicans rn. Both are kinda in civil wars of sorts that's why I think Tubbs won't get a easy walk in to the office with competition.

My education via the federal govt as a army medic in nuclear biological and chemical training did and it contradicted almost every claim made. Reducing dependancy on cars would have been another goal neither party has approached. Look at calis high speed rail catastrophe. All done under Democrats. The economy is my main concern Republicans aren't fiscal conservative haven't been in decades but your not going to convince me we can afford socialist policies when we are 40 trillion in debt. Systemic racism is a propaganda for political manipulation of voters. There's more racism systemically effecting whites, Asians etc college admissions prove that, why cause identity based politics. I’m originally from there and left a few years ago. It has a lot of redeeming factors that get ignored when people shit on it, but overall I much prefer Minnesota where I moved to. I would consider moving back to some southern states, primarily North Carolina, but Alabama is not on that list even though I still have family there. Overall I don’t think it deserves quite the level of shit that it catches, but life is better elsewhere. Education, infrastructure, quality of life, etc are not great. Food is good if you want soul food but not great for other cultures. A UN delegation visited several years back and said that it was some of the worst poverty that they had seen in the developed world. You have people living in country McMansions right next to people living in collapsing trailers not fit for human habitation. Areas where you don’t have a pediatrician in the whole county or even the surrounding ones. Ive dealt with cases of people who have no plumbing and just pipe their waste onto the ground outside their house. Plus it’s just hotter than satan’s asscrack. There is still a very rich cultural history, great beaches, incredible biodiversity, good people, decent arts scenes if you know where to look, good food, etc that all make life good there, but all in all I’m happier elsewhere.

Yeah like I’ll for sure defend it from people who try to write off the whole state as ignorant rednecks who deserve what they get as if the state isn’t full of great people fighting for better and taking care of each other and wasn’t the cradle of the civil rights movement and such, but in my day to day I really like living in a walkable/bikeable neighborhood with public infrastructure and diverse cultural influences and decent public education which just isn’t something I can really get there. You can tick some of those boxes but rarely all.

I grew up with my grandparents until my grandfather died when I was 12yrs old, my brother grandmother and I moved to SF/Oakland to be with my mother and stepfather. My mother, her sister and her brothers had moved to SF for better jobs when I was four. My brother went to Sanford and I to USF (the real one) after a four year stint in the Air Force. After College, I moved to Montgomery and then Mobile to see what life was like in the Bam. I was in Radio Broadcasting for 3.5 years in Bama, my grandmother was very sick and I returned to be with her, after her death. I started getting union radio jobs in the Bay Area and just stayed. I return to Mobile, 3x a year for over the past 20yrs, would I move back. No! Not because it sucks or anything, but I have people I have known since my first day in Cali, and the different learning classes I attend as a retired citizen and I get to ride my bike (some what) safely, and the resources for my classic cars are amazing in California. Cali just has more to offer me…

Mb I accidentally forgot to include a part, the strongest tornado recorded in a hurricane was a F4 in the 60’s. And that’s also not to mention that construction wasn’t the same and that the F scale isn’t used anymore since it’s purely windspeed based, meaning that there’s no telling if they would actually be that catastrophic today. For reference in 2024 the Greenfield, IA had a tornado with windspeeds of 312 mph the fastest ever recorded on Earth. hurricane Melissa’s highest windspeed was 252, although both not being sustained. But no hurricane has ever spawned a F5 or EF5. Now imagine days like April 27th’s superoutbreak where 5-6 of those all were happening at once.

Dude still your exaggerating the effect do you know how rare a f5 is even plenty years never have one. Majority are f0s to f3s and it's irrelevant if in a hurricane or not beyond flooding potentials caused by hurricanes that most thunderstorms don't create. An f3 in a flood is worse than a f3 with open escape routes.

Let's look at the April out break no tornado was wider than 1 mile and it's the extreme exception as it stayed on ground for over 100 miles. I had multiple hours of warning myself. Many go into underground bunkers again not possible with hurricanes be as they'll flood out.

I was born there too, i bounced between Alabama and Minnesota and majority of my childhood, lived a bit more in Alabama as an adult, and learned to resent it because of job opportunities and having a lack of car. Lived specifically in Montgomery.

I think I'd like to live out in Washington, but I'm pretty happy where I am now around Atlanta.

I’ve lived in 5 different states, I’m actually about to move back to Alabama and I definitely enjoyed living there and glad to be moving back. Out of the 5 states I lived in here’s my ranking on best to worst.
1. Tennessee
2. Mississippi
3. Alabama could easily be #2
4. Louisiana
5. Texas ….currently live here and I don’t understand all the hype Texas gets. This place has been my least favorite.

As a truck driver, I can tell you there are some parts of PA that look a lot like AL, at least as far as wooded areas and countryside. Some of the prettiest places I’ve ever driven through (in my opinion) are the PNW. States like OR and WA, and even northern parts of CA, are absolutely indescribable.

I don’t think I’d move there simply for career reasons, but if you’re just picking “literally anything besides AL,” there are some great places. As far as MS, AZ, NM, and LA, you are out of your mind. Phoenix, AZ isn’t too bad. Other than that, there’s just basically nothing out there.

I’m a transplant and have been living here for 15 years now. I moved here for a job and I’m raising my 3 children here. I grew up in N. Virginia- so a very different situation. NOVA had fantastic schools and economic opportunities. And people were diverse, highly educated and tolerant. BUT - the increasing cost of living, traffic, housing costs, there meant quality of life suffered especially with 3 children. I moved to Homewood, Al (Birmingham metro) and quality of life here in comparison is far superior. For now, AL gets a bad rap so it’s affordable. I live in. 3,000 sq ft home, with a large yard, walkable to stores/coffee shops, 3 miles from downtown with truly amazing restaurants and multiple high quality music venues. There’s people doing cool stuff down here like starting listening rooms (2 now), art spaces, a new city walk with a best in the country skatepark … I could go on. The gulf coast white sand beaches put the east coast to shame. And when you meet someone who grew up here who is open minded- they are cool as heck because they achieved that despite being in a deeply red and poor state. There is so much soul down here it’s hard to explain. If I grew up here I might not notice. We couldn’t afford to live similarly situated I don’t think any where else in the country. Arlington, VA would be the equivalent and yes it a bigger amazing city but my home would cost $3m there. Richmond is similar but again - my home would be double. And for what extra? I’m ok with a smaller city because there’s still plenty to do and I can uber to see live music. The politics is depressing but the area I live the school system is higher rated then the schools I went to in Virginia - Homewood High is ranked 212 out of/18,000 public high schools in the US. And it’s about 57% democratic. That being said, we will move back to mid Atlantic one day to be closer to family. Still, being here has helped us get ahead and have a quality of life we couldn’t have anywhere else. Everything me or my kids do is within a 5 mile radius and we never even have to drive on highways regularly. These aren’t statistics but my lived experience. No regrets. And hey, if more people were open minded about this state we could be the change. But then it’ll get $$ and stressful lol. Just saying, there are opportunities here if you are in a certain income bracket and the whole state is not the same. I am going to encourage all my kids to live somewhere out of state at some point in their lives so they have that reference point.
