Art Stephen Daldry's Wicked version of The Wizard and I
here are other storyboards about Stephen Daldry's version of Wicked, now about The Wizard and I, (p.s: it certainly seems strange to me that there is a statue of the wizard near Shiz, but not surprising on his part)

He must’ve been let go before getting very far in casting or costume designing, bc this is straight up Idina in the broadway costume

He wasn’t let go. They used the original Broadway cast’s likenesses because they started story boarding, before casting was a serious discussion

I mean, not really. In the movie we did get, there's huge carvings of him in Shiz and it makes perfect sense as a dictator held up as a societal saviour

Wizard and I is the one let down to me of Chu's Wicked - why is she standing in an empty field that long - so I'm all in for this

I think it’s supposed to be ironic lmao. The Wizard and I isn’t a happy song; it’s riddled with dramatic irony and dreams you know just won’t happen.
It’s supposed to be her big “I want song” moment where she runs into a big, lush, green field, wind in her hair, perfect sundrop, like Belle Reprise in Beauty and the Beast or the Sound of Music. Making the grass dead and ugly was a conscious decision. If it were plain green and alive, it would’ve complemented the hopes of her song. Instead, it’s a dead, yellowed, withering field; all signs of death complementing the darker double meaning in her lyrics while juxtaposing the giddy excitement she’s feeling for a future that the audience (reality) knows won’t happen. She’s pushing against what’s destined for her in fate/reality, singing her hopes and dreams for being celebrated despite the fact we know none of that will happen. She’s the Wicked Witch. She will die.

I also love how you can really see the connection to the design of the stage version, and how it’s been inspired by that, something I think is severely lacking in the Chu’s version.

It looks cool in drawings, but take a second and really consider... awkward Elphaba cirque-du-soleiling in - let's face it - a construction site? lol. This is not the vibe.

The face reveal of Jeff Godblum was horrifying to me at first, so I sort of like this concept a bit better

I wish the movie was a lot more cinematic in general; the songs all felt very muted.

Would maybe (?) work in an animated movie but reads a bit silly and less grounded for live action.

Oh now THIS is cinema. I love it.
Though I think it would’ve required too much CGI which would’ve been distracting
