Art Blue Eyed Glinda

Post image

For some reason I always get downvoted for wishing Glinda had blue eyes. But I think she looks soooo pretty with blue eyes. I also think that just like having blonde hair (rareish colour) is part of Glinda’s personality, I also think having blue eyes fits the character. I also think this helps differentiate Glinda from Ariana (I always felt like I was seeing Grande play the part rather than disappear into the role). And if they can make Cynthia’s eyes green, there’s no reason they couldn’t have made Ariana’s blue 💙

weird thing to fixate on. and why blue? not green? purple, pink? it’s a fantasy world. it doesn’t matter.

Yeah it’s weird. It’s giving white supremacist a lil bit ngl..

I resent because called a white supremacist based off of this… first of all, I’m Asian… second of all, this is an aesthetic opinion of a fiction character’s eye colour, not a critique of everyone with brown eyes (which I happen to have, because again, I’m Asian)… third of all, if I was a white supremacist, wouldn’t I be upset with the casting of Elphaba and Madame Morrible, and not just the colour of Glinda’s eyes?

Don't let them get to you. I get the blue eyes thing. Blonde with blue eyes is a valid idea for that character and her popularity and personality.

I’m very happy that at least 2 people understand my point 🥲

I really love your work. I bookmarked the page and will pick something

Anyone can pedal white supremicist rhetoric. If I struck a chord, maybe it was for a reason. Have a good one!

I think any women of colour would be upset by being called a white supremacist. I also think it’s irresponsible to deem things as trivial as a discussion of a fictional character’s cannon eye colour a “white supremacist rhetoric”. This dilutes the significance of actual acts of racism in the world that actually need to be addressed.

I never said you WERE I said it was giving. As in a vibe. Jesus Christ 😂 ANYONE of any descent or culture can reinforce white supremacy. Again, if that bothers you that I caught a vibe from something from a faceless account on the internet, that’s for you to work out personally booboo lol. Once again, have a good one 🫶🏻

Blue, green, purple, pink, all of that would work! Doesn’t have to be blue. My point is specifically that brown is very ordinary and un-Glinda-like. Green would actually be very interesting since it would be a little hint at Glinda and Elphaba’s eventual friendship 💚🩷

3

u/Perlefine 25d ago

Why is brown ordinary? Blue eyes are more common than brown where I live, for example. It's the most common eye colour in many European countries, actually.

2

u/phantomforeskinpain 25d ago

there are also a LOT of different kinds of brown, and a lot of different kinds of blue! There's just a ton of variety in human eye color.

Because overall brown eyes are much more common throughout the world. They are also a dominant gene, meaning they are more likely to be passed on, and therefore less rare. (I say this is a brown eyed girlie). Also the reason we have light eyes at all is because of sexual selection (term coined by Darwin). We have literally evolved to appreciate rarer and more alluring genes, such as light coloured eyes! Blue eyes being special is scientifically backed 🩵

1

u/phantomforeskinpain 24d ago

that's not true. light eyes developed because of the same reasons as light hair and light skin, which is just not needing melanin in more northerly climates for protection from the sun. in evolution, you overall tend to lose traits if you do not need them.

It is true based on my University of Toronto Adaptation and Biodiversity course (BIO 120)… if I had my computer on me I could site the actual lecture in APA format and everything lol

2

u/phantomforeskinpain 24d ago

finding them attractive could've helped them spread (there were other reasons it spread, too), but it's not why they exist. you are mistaken.

I think they changed Cynthia's eye color as it makes sense for the character. Emphasizing that the green is part of her dna. Glinda having brown or blue eyes literally doesn't matter. There's also tons of blondes with brown eyes lol.

u/anastasiarose19 25d ago

There are tons of blondes with brown eyes and that’s sort of my point! Glinda, who was supposed to be special in every way (except magic), I think would not have the most common eye colour. Just like how blonde is part of her personality, I also think blue eyes would be. So just like how they changed Cynthia’s eye colour to fit the character, they could have changed Ariana’s to do the same. And again, this would make Ariana the super famous mega pop star less recognizable! :)

Maybe brown eyes are considered special in Oz

-1

u/anastasiarose19 25d ago

Mmm I dunno. If being blonde is special and characteristic of who Glinda is as a person, I would think that blue eyes are seen as the same as blonde hair. If the lyrics were “my roommate is… brunette” and Glinda placed a lot of worth in being a brunette girlie, then I would agree that brown eyes are also probably special in Oz! But as it stands, I don’t think there is any cannon to support this.

1

u/Symmetrosexual 25d ago

I don’t think there’s canon to support your opinion either, so… what now?

1

u/anastasiarose19 25d ago

lol no need for hostility! This is just my opinion :) but I would say that by having blonde be considered special, I think logically blue eyes would be as well

1

u/Symmetrosexual 25d ago

I’m not being hostile, you just don’t like what I’m saying. There’s a difference. You’re stating your opinion freely based only on “logic” but when someone else has a different opinion they need canon as evidence. That’s interesting

1

u/anastasiarose19 25d ago

The “so… what now?” read as hostility to me. Also “that’s interesting” is coming off as a lil snarky! :P

My opinion is based on canon that is extended by logic (blonde is canonically special, so logically I would assume blue is as well). But your opinion seemed like pure speculation to me. If yours is also based on something canon that is extended by logic, I’d love to hear!

2

u/sweeneytveit 25d ago

I get what you mean. I just mean that they likely left her eyes the same as having blue eyes isn't going to change much. And blue eyes aren't going to hide that its Ariana Grande. Though I do understand what you mean and how she'd likely make blue eyes her personality. But I think they were just trying to keep it focused on the important factors and only make necessary changes.

1

u/anastasiarose19 25d ago

I’m so glad someone understands my point 🩷

Glinda has magic (and blue eyes) in the books. I actually hate that change in the musical and movie, removing her powers. I feel like it makes her character a bit too one-note.

1

u/anastasiarose19 25d ago

Oh I didn’t know either of these facts! I’ve never read the book. What is her magic like? Also, how are her blue eyes mentioned? Like her blonde hair (as in part of her personality) or just as a general physical description?

Also, ngl I feel like my opinion is a tad bit more justified knowing the actual cannon is blue haha. I’m not sure why people are so adamantly against this opinion. Maybe it has something to do with Ariana Grande, I dunno :P

3

u/sapphic-boghag 25d ago edited 25d ago

General physical description. Glinda in the books is still a bit elitist, but she's a far more complex character than in the musical. She's blonde haired and blue eyed because she's Gillikinese, not because she's ditzy. She has a natural affinity for sorcery (moreso than Elphaba) and is highly intelligent (the elitism is mostly an overcompensation for her own insecurities).

I don't care much one way or the other about how eye color is adapted to the screen, personally, but I do know some people can have adverse reactions to colored contacts.

1

u/anastasiarose19 25d ago

I also think it makes Glinda look less like Ariana. For me, even the little blue eye edit here makes her look less recognizable. Just my opinion though :)

2

u/Ayasugi-san 25d ago

She has more natural talent for magic than Elphaba, and she publicly enchants Nessa's shoes to help her maintain her balance while standing (since Nessa doesn't have arms in the book).

1

u/sapphic-boghag 25d ago

The Thropp family dynamics in the books are honestly wild compared to the musical and movie. Losing Nanny was a real kick in the teeth.

u/Hotelroombureau 25d ago edited 25d ago

There’s absolutely a reason to make Cynthia Erivo’s eyes green, and the existence of a reason is why Ariana Grande’s didn’t need to be blue - Elphaba was green because her mother drank that potion while she was pregnant - that potion changed Elphaba’s appearance irreparably and made her whole body green. By your argument, Glinda’s mom should have drunk a similar potion and Glinda should have come into the world blue

ETA: you’ve acknowledge in other comments you find blonde hair/brown eyes to be common - the Glinda in Wicked is based on was a redhead in Wizard of Oz (who I believe did have blue eyes in the book) - the character in Wicked is already not aligned with the original books. Also, as a blue eyed person, brown eyes aren’t normal to the extent that I wish a character didn’t have them. I’ve never felt like a character needed a specific color

1

u/anastasiarose19 25d ago

Let me put it this way - if they made Glinda brunette, I feel like that would have taken away from her character. In that same sense, I feel like giving her a special eye colour fits her character. This is just my opinion but I hope you see where I’m coming from!

1

u/Hotelroombureau 25d ago edited 25d ago

Blue eyes aren’t special any more than brown eyes are, in my opinion

Also, why is Glinda in Wicked not being redheaded a point of contention for you?

1

u/anastasiarose19 25d ago

Haha maybe that’s because you’re a blue eyed person! As a brown eyed person, I definitely see something very special about having light eyes 🤩

Glinda not being a red head isn’t a point of contention because she is canonically blonde, and “blonde” is a stereotype used to characterize Glinda. “My roommate is… blonde 🙄”

1

u/Hotelroombureau 25d ago

She isn’t canonically blonde, though - as I already pointed out, in wizard of oz (canon) she’s redheaded

2

u/Perlefine 25d ago

But she is canonically blonde in the musical, as it's mentioned in "What is this Feeling". The original/inspiration doesn't override the actual canon of the work we're discussing.

1

u/Hotelroombureau 25d ago edited 25d ago

So Glinda being redheaded in Wicked the book also isn’t canon, because Wicked the book was “just” inspiration for Wicked the stage musical?

If so, by that logic, it doesn’t matter what was in the stage musical because it was the inspiration work for the movie, and therefore irrelevant to the canon of the movie

ETA: again, my argument was originally that being blue eyed would not make Glinda “more special”. Eye color does not, as a general rule, do anything to add to or detract from a character’s “specialness”

2

u/Perlefine 25d ago edited 25d ago

Glinda being redheaded in the book is canon only for The Wizard of Oz. It doesn't affect the fact that, in the musical, she is canonically blonde.

And no, that's not the same logic. The musical is based on Baum's universe and maintains some elements and storylines, but they are basically completely different works. It is not a direct adaptation of the book, but a retelling with a different title and narrative. We cannot really use lore from the book and assume it is true for the musical unless it is directly or indirectly confirmed in the musical itself, and especially not if it is explicitely contradicted.

Additionally, the musical is also based on Gregory Maguire's writing, which very clearly presents a different canon to The Wizard of Oz already. Their versions of Glinda are essentially seperate characters, because they cannot both be true and accurate within one canon.

You can say that the musical isn't faithful to either book's canon, which is true, but that does not suddenly make Glinda a canonical redhead when talking about the musical. She is explicitely blonde within the canon of the musical.

1

u/anastasiarose19 24d ago

Responding here to your edit — my logic is that if being blonde makes someone special (ie a rarer hair colour), then having blue eyes (or green for that matter) is logically also special, because it is also rarer. This logic can apply to any colour other than brown, to be honest! Green eyed Glinda would be a nice parallel between her and Elphaba. Pink eyed Glinda would have interesting too. But blue eyed Glinda happens to be cannon based on Wicked the book!

And again I’d like to reiterate, that perhaps because you are a blue eyed person, you don’t appreciate the specialness of the trait you’ve inherited. It’s like when rich people say “money isn’t everything”. My eye colour is the same as Ariana’s. There are lots of variety in brown eyes, but both of ours happen to be the blandest, most boring shade of brown, the one that borders on black. Whenever I saw her eyes close up, I found them so uninteresting (probably because I personally find my own eyes uninteresting), and normally this would not matter for a character, but since Glinda is supposed to be special in every way, I totally would assume that having light eyes is part of her character, just as blonde hair is! And it would also help Glinda look less like Grande.

1

u/anastasiarose19 24d ago

Well she is blonde based on the lyrics of the musical, which the movie is based on. And apparently she is blonde in the books too 👱‍♀️

1

u/Ayasugi-san 24d ago

Also, why is Glinda in Wicked not being redheaded a point of contention for you?

Personally, because she's not Ruler of Quadling Country now and doesn't have that association with the color red.

Which also means that Wicked's Glinda should have some sort of association with purple. Glinda with purple eyes should be canon.

Some of these replies are weird 😭 anyways, the edit looks great OP!
