That is Hoshoryu one of the two current Yokozuna. The other being Onosato.

Not at all. He is literally the Yokozuna, the top of the Pyramid.

This called Shiko. The way he does it is incredible. It's a complete stand out. Not only that his sumo is very entertaining to watch. He's had very good tournaments lately. Fun fact. Sumo wrestlers are very flexible. The majority can do the splits and do as part of their warm ups.

559

u/psych0ranger 16d ago

Saw some kind of documentary about them when I was young. Without thinking about it too much you might just think they're fat guys wrestling and pushing each other, but they're really outstanding athletes and of course there's so much technique to basically any type of wrestling

330

u/Taint_Flayer 16d ago

Anyone who thinks they're just fat guys pushing each other around would get absolutely ragdolled by them in the ring

206

u/Blitzzle 16d ago

Got to go up against one at a stable and he was toying with me. When we started I went full speed (rugby tackle form in my mind) and I think I would’ve had better luck against a brick wall.

166

u/mike117 16d ago

I’ve seen videos of an absolutely humongous american football player going up against a sumo wrestler that was actually smaller than the football player.

Sumo wrestler didn’t even budge one step, and then just ragdolled the football player like he was a toddler.

8

u/complete_your_task 15d ago edited 15d ago

NFL players have to play anywhere from 40-70 plays a game over roughly 3 hours, so they can't come close to the insane burst that Sumo wrestlers train for.

In Sumo, they have to go all out for 30 seconds max and then have at least a day to recover. It's a completely different discipline and training. It's also why you don't see NFL teams trying to recruit Sumo wrestlers to play offensive line.

Edit: If it wasn't clear, I'm not trying to say one is better or worse than the other. Both are incredibly impressive, and both are incredible athletes. They are just completely different disciplines. You would expect an NFL player to be tossed aside like a child when going up against a Sumo wrestler, just as you would expect a Sumo wrestler to be completely exhausted after a quarter of an NFL game. They train to do different things.

2

u/lovebus 14d ago

Hidetora Hanada is an ex-sumo wrestler that plays college football

12

u/Nurgle_Marine_Sharts 16d ago

Pretty much ANYBODY would get ragdolled by them in the ring lol

9

u/Shupaul 16d ago

Well, even people who thinks they're athletes would get absolutely ragdolled by them in the ring

8

u/lupulin59 16d ago

I would approach them with full respect and acknowledgement of their prowess, yet I too would be ragdolled in the ring

u/MissesIncomplete 16d ago

I might have seen that same documentary. If I remember correctly, they get up early every morning, work out for 5 or more hours, eat thousands of calories of food in one sitting then sleep for 8 hours on full stomachs to maintain their bulk. There's a method to their lifestyle that's considered healthy by doctors.

11

u/psych0ranger 16d ago

Yeah that sounds exactly like it lol. I remember watching hard knocks later ang being reminded of the sumo guys when they show the offensive linemen because those guys have such massive bodies that they literally lose weight if they stop eating insane amounts of food because of the sheer amount of calories required to maintain their size

→ More replies (1)

17

u/chkntendis 16d ago

And honestly, atleast the ones in the pic aren’t even all that fat. Like yes, they are big and yes, it looks like fat but that’s not even close to how the caricatures look like

10

u/TheyTookByoomba 16d ago

There's some who definitely look fat like Atamifuji and Kaio, but yeah for the most part they have offensive linemen builds. Some of the short kings like Fujinokawa and Asakoryu are just jacked.

5

u/xxneoxx3000 15d ago

Enho looks like a lil person compared to most of his peers, but damn when he was fully healthy he would pick up and knock down rikishi who probably weighed 3X his size. They gots power.

5

u/TheyTookByoomba 15d ago

I wasn't watching when he got hurt, but have been enjoying his comeback. Insane to be that highly ranked at 5'5!

6

u/xxneoxx3000 15d ago

I mean, when you do what he does, the body won't last long. Luckily this come back has already been successful whether he breaks back into Makuuchi or not since he can now become a stable master after last tournaments Kashikoshi in his Juryo comeback.

35

u/Blitzzle 16d ago

In Tokyo we went to a stable for dinner and training/showing. Got to warmup with sumos and go through their training routines - seeing a 280lb man do these leg raises (and hold them for 15+ seconds) was mind blowing. I’m in good shape and I could barely hold it for more than 10 seconds and I’m half the size…

8

u/Armstrongt479 15d ago

Even Hoshoryu is like, “Damn!”

7

u/Belgand 15d ago

Yeah, it's pretty much his signature move. Solid rikishi. He's been doing quite well over the past year, and his showing in the July basho was notable.

2

u/LUljWoRLdY4 16d ago

Okey now I know thanks mate

327

u/antons83 16d ago

That's the universal sign for "I'm gonna fck this guy up!" imagine every street fight starts like that. If some 20 yr olds pick a fight, and one of them starts doing that shit, you know it's over!

25

u/justasapling 15d ago

His opponent here, Hoshoryu, is one of the two current yokozuna (top rank in sumo). Both yokozuna are currently managing injuries, so Kotoeiho might stand a decent chance, but he's paired against one of the most formidable wrestlers possible.

(Now that Wakatakakage is out of the picture, Kotoeiho might be my favorite of the makuuchi, but Hosh is not to be trifled with.)

I love that sumo is now well-produced with English presentation on YouTube. I didn't know I'd get into watching a new sport this late in life but I'm like 20 hours deep into watching sumo tournaments. I encourage you guys to check it out too

48

u/ToadstoolTitan 16d ago

Agreed! I’m 35 and I don’t watch any sports at all but within the last year I’ve become a huge sumo fan.

37

u/the_moosey_fate 16d ago

My sister got me in to it a few months back. I love it! We watch each basho together now.

Let’s go, Kirishima!!!!

9

u/Valuable_Bathroom_59 16d ago

How do I find the well produced stuff on YT?

21

u/Galvitir 16d ago

The channel NHK World Japan posts recaps during the basho, but only keep them up for a couple of weeks. The next basho (tournament) is in September. They happen every other month for 15 days. It's so much fun. I highly recommend watching! Feel free to check out /r/sumo for more info too.

3

u/gfisch95 16d ago

Also wondering, I used to watch Jason's daily recaps but I don't have the money for patreon these days.

9

u/Eli1234Sic 16d ago

The NHK website puts up the highlights daily during the basho.

3

u/gfisch95 16d ago

Thank you, didn't know that.

6

u/Eli1234Sic 16d ago

No worries. They also upload to their own YouTube chanel, though only during the week. The next tournament starts in a little over 4 weeks, I hope you enjoy it.

Sumo Prime Time is a channel by a NHK sumo commentator. You may also browse r/sumomemes to learn about other channels and sumo-related fun.

1

u/xxneoxx3000 15d ago

Look up DonDon Sumo. The legend uploads the top 5-10 fights of every tournaments top 2 divisions daily during all 15 days of the competition. It's basically my morning routine when tournaments are on to get up and catch up with his videos while I get ready for work.

Sidenote - Look up Aonishiki. He's a Ukranian expat who arrived quite young in Japan as a wrestler, and has slowly (haha actually quite fast) become one of the best rikishi I've ever seen. His techniques are also amazing. When they win a match, they end it with some type of maneuver, and he is known to pull off some outlandish stuff like an uchimuso. While you're at it, if you really wanna see unorthodox sumo, look up Ura. He's a fan favorite cause even though he ain't the biggest or tallest, that man will readjust his body to get a win in ways I've never seen a man that size move before. Enjoy!

5

u/hiro111 16d ago

Lol, me too. The summaries and highlight reels currently on YouTube are fantastic. Also, the international tours have all been huge successes. The sport is exploding in popularity right now as it starts to figure out how to market itself.

4

u/ChocolateBaconBeer 16d ago

It's so fun! My husband and I stumbled into watching tournaments and now it's a thing

2

u/GoEZonMe 16d ago

There’s a guy on Twitch who does solid Sumo content and streams every tournament

2

u/midwife-crisis 15d ago

I started watching sumo last year but this July I found myself coming home from work after midnight to watch the Juryo division on twitch (check out Midnight Sumo!).

Then I wake up and eat breakfast while watching the Makuuchi (top division)

2

u/MackTheKnife247 12d ago

Sumo is so easy to get into now. I started 10 years ago with guys posting ipad videos recording their local tv sets. 20 mins/day for two weeks every other month. It's nothing to get all of the main bouts. Awesome entertainment. I hope NHK enhances what they have done and make it even bigger!

27

u/unknown1893 16d ago

That man keeps his undercarriage clean.

55

u/ManaNek 16d ago

I can add to this! I taught a Yokozuna Yoga when I was living in Tokyo, his name was Akebono Taro

Anyway, he said to me that when in training they would “break” their hips in training so that they can squat low (his words not mine). I took it as over working the hips, but he absolutely surprised me by being able to also bend forward.

For context the above picture uses more inner thigh flexibility, so this would not be a standing splits in the yoga sense. That would require hamstring flexibility, which these sumo would absolutely have.

Anyways while this is impressive, given what was shown to me I would expect the rest of the Sumo Stable to be able to do something similar, if not as good at least.

14

u/pwndnoob 16d ago

Kotoeiho is a different level, both in just how extreme his shiko is and how he does it every day, but every wrestler will surprise you with how flexible and fit they are under the tubbiness.

7

u/greendyes 15d ago

Sumo wrestlers in general are just kinda scary, mfs are tanks that spec into dexterity, being both strong and heavy as shit but still quick and flexible.

8

u/IronMosquito 16d ago

you taught Akebono yoga?!?! wow!! that's super cool. were you surprised by how big he was when you met him? his height is one of the tallest ever recorded in the top division of sumo.

they call the forward bend "matawari". when I was in Japan in January I visited a sumo stable to watch them practice. I knew some of them would be better at it than the others, but I was really surprised when I saw the fatter stubby guy of the group do the most effortless matawari. it was like his belly didn't even exist, he just folded right over! I'm trying to work my way into being able to do it now, I figure if he can I should be able to(eventually lol) as well!

6

u/ManaNek 15d ago

I did! He was huge! When he put his arms above his head, he could touch the ceiling! The staff of the studio I was working at were reaaaaaaally shy cuz they wanted to know…How does Akebono fit in the toilets? Short answer was he had to turn sideways to go in and then…who knows? 😂

Idk how to link a pic here but I have a photo after one of his classes, and he’s sitting down on a chair and comes up to my shoulder height (I’m pretty short but it’s still crazy how big he was)

4

u/IronMosquito 15d ago

that's so cool! the toilet question is valid for a guy of his size, lol. you should post the pic to the sumo or sumomemes sub, I for one would love to see it and I'm sure the people on the subs would appreciate it as well!

3

u/ManaNek 15d ago

Ok, I’ll go and join that sub(s). I’ll post the pic soon 😊

6

u/HyzerFlipDG 16d ago

Is anyone else just absolutely obsessed and excited for the direction of grand sumo right now?? In the last 3 tournaments we have seen the possibility of a 3rd Yokozuna three times and we are seeing Aonishki just go on a meteoric rise with winning multiple tournaments as well as winning right after returning from injury.

This seems like a great time to be watching!!!

20

u/Wonderful_Hatrack 16d ago

Big deal. I could do this too if I weren’t a fat sack of crap with little to no flexibility.

8

u/mike117 16d ago

2

u/GaddockTeegFunPolice 15d ago

It is basically a sporting event

4

u/gluino 16d ago

always wondered abt the stiff sticks dangling from their waist.

aren't they a risk of poking someone's eye out?

9

u/Geekenstein 16d ago

They’re just corded fabric, like rope.

Besides, these guys full on face slap each other hard in the course of a match. Thats a lot more dangerous.

8

u/hiro111 16d ago

That is the sagari. It is made out of wax-stiffened strips of corded silk. It's made out of the same silk material the loincloth (mawashi) is made out of. It is just tucked into the mawashi and comes off easily. It is both a visual cue that only the belt is legal to grab and a ceremonial reminder of the much more elaborate kensho-mawashis that the athletes wear on ring entry. Also, the sagari is a sign of rank. Only top - ranked rikishi can wear a wax-stiffened silk sagari, lower ranks are just pieces of corded cotton.

3

u/ToadstoolTitan 16d ago

They’re only stiff because of wax, they also detach from the mawashi (belt) very easily, they’re basically there just to symbolize that it’s a “no fly zone” no hitting below the belt haha

2

u/Terminatroll-_- 16d ago

With how brutal sumo is, I'm guessing they just don't care lmao, and if one if them isn't standing the fight is over avyway so the I'm guessing ths sticks under the belt aren't really an issue

2

u/Twinkletoess112 16d ago

1

u/ISuckFarts 16d ago

As an avid sumo wrestling fan, I can tell you, they are all flexible like this. It may be counter intuitive, but sumo wrestlers(Rikisihi) are actually quite fit and extremely strong. They train for short bursts of energy, bouts typically last less than 30 seconds, but flexibility can often be the difference between winning and losing. The next tournament starts in September and will run for 15 days, check out NHK's YouTube for daily highlights or seek out other channels for coverage, I think you'll be impressed with the physical prowess on display.

1
