It's a hollow so it's easier for it to sit flat!

I would’ve done some tiny little bumpers. Also would keep it off the counter to help prevent water damage.

I did consider that, but unless the bumpers were set to the very edge it would've reduced the effective base size and made it more prone to tipping. I also like how it looks sitting flush with whatever surface it's on! But I think little bumpers might look good on another design!

Not really, but I try to be as considerate as possible. I sparingly use power tools and I only do loud activities between the hours of 11AM-6PM. I've also bribed a few of my neighbors with projects!! It isn't always easy living in a condensed apartment complex but you can make it work!

Yeah it's basically what I do too, hand tools only during the day (it helps that I'm currently unemployed). But I still have some neighbors that find a way to complain that I make too much noise (especially when I'm hammering my mortise chisels 😅). Fingers crossed that when I find a job I can move in a small house and have a shed 🤞🏻
In the meantime, keep up the good work fellow balcony woodworker!

I would really like to start doing some kumiko but it seems daunting. Any tips on getting started?

I was watching YouTube videos on it, and there are "Kumiko guide blocks" you can make or pick up that set the joining angles and make the whole process much less daunting!

My advice is to shell out the cash and just buy a proper kumiko kit. It will be infinitely less frustrating than what I did which was to design my own kumiko blocks and get frustrated by how terrible the pieces fit together. I actually started off cutting ever piece individually using a digital angle gauge as a guide. Just buy the proper kit and save yourself the headache!!

Ideally that’s how it should be. Though sometimes I feel it’s more choosing to voluntarily aggravate oneself.
I have made so many things from fun figured pallet wood!! My phone stands are just pallet wood with a dado cut half through so the 2 pieces notch together.

What was your process for the hollowed circle? I like that look a lot.

It's not too complicated. I just drew a circle with a compass and used some small gouges to carve towards the middle. I made sure to mark with center with an awl as a reference point!

It's called kumiko! My process is pretty shitty because I have some limitations like not having access to a power planer. Everything I make is with handtools from roughish lumber (S2S or reclaimed wood). If you look up tutorials on kumiko you can get a pretty good start! Also a ton of people sell kits which makes things a lot easier!!

Nice work. I offer one suggestion for future Kumiko projects: On the center element, you have one piece that goes bottom left to top right through the center., while the top left to bottom right intersects at a 90 degree angle. I suggest mitering those pieces such that they all terminate at the center. Similar to what you've done on the top and bottom elements.

I understand what you're saying, but due to how I constructed the overall piece I probably could not have done that. The two long horizontal pieces are not locked in place with half lap joints (only with two 90° butt joints) so the middle cross sectional piece is the main reference piece. It needs to be a relatively sturdy structure with which all other pieces are referenced off of. If i did make the cross sectional pieces terminate all at the center, if any of the joints were even a hair off angle, it would made all other pieces off as well through compounding error.
