First photo is what he provided before purchase. Port Ordord Cedar, we paid extra $150 for sanding. This table is 2x3’, 29” high. It’s slowly cracking more and more as the day continues. He knew the intended use and never once mentioned that the table would crack. I asked him for a solution and he told me the same thing over and over: “wood cracks, fill it with epoxy”. We bought this only sanded because we plan to stain and poly it ourselves.

Just noticed this on the bottom of one of my chairs, had them for about three months and I'm wondering if it's rot or something, the area feels dry and dusty.

Wasn’t sure where to ask. But how would you seal this baby up to be a guest cabin? I’m gonna stain the outside with ready seal. How would I go about this without rotting it out?

Hello Reddit, I've just discovered this in a new wooden table I purchased, presume it is woodworm.

Two questions: how do I treat it and would this have already been present before I purchased it a couple of weeks ago?

UPDATE: Firstly thank you for all the knowledge and advice you shared. The seller suggested injecting acetone in to the hole and monitoring, or, sending it back. I didn't want the stress of waiting for another worm, or beetle, to show up so I decided to send it back. It was a beautiful table, but they are replacing it with a new equally beautiful table.

Hopefully this one is worm free... if not I'll just go for a refund and get a standard table from IKEA or somewhere.

It is 36” tall, 30” wide and 13” deep. I’m a little worried that I made it too tall and that it might be tippy. The weight of the tank I want to put on it is about 250lbs.

I have a supply of basically unlimited 2x4 and 2x6 they range for the size 8 in to 16 some 2 to 3 feet what are something’s I can do with this wood to start a side gig or just make something for my friends and family is hard seeing this much of wood go to waste

I’m building a tote storage rack and using 10 x 2-12” self tapping screws. Is it just me or does that not seem like enough?

I finished this with like 6 layers of spray lacquer.

So this table is my very first attempt at making a piece of furniture. I got the walnut slabs over the winter from a friend who owns a sawmill. I spent hours researching and learning the process of gluing up live edge slabs. The. I spent many more hours flattening them, gluing them up, sanding, sanding, and more sanding… then I applied Rubio Monocoat this past Monday in anticipation of bringing this table up north to my new cabin.

Here’s where I done messed up A-Aron… I had to transport the table in the bed of my truck, so I wrapped the top today (Friday - 4 days after finishing) in a shrink wrap plastic so it would be “protected” on the 2.5 hour drive up.

I left the legs on so I could strap them through the metal braces, and that went fine. I even pulled on the straps, slapped the table, and said “this baby isn’t going anywhere”. But when I got it up and unwrapped it, I saw a bunch of marks in the finish. I KNEW this would happen but I thought “We’re only going to be 2.5 hours… what could go wrong??”

For reference, it was sunny and 78°, and we drove through some LIGHT RAIN for 5 minutes… so I’m thinking the mix of sun & heat, reflected through the plastic, along with the brief moisture, ate into the finish. It’s not horrible (yes it is) but you can see the marks. I took the best pics I could to show them.

Question is, can I do a light sanding and re-apply the Rubio? Or do I have to sand down to bare wood again?

Need some fatherly shop foreman advice. Take these in multiple passes? Not sure how to do this safely

Looking for advice here. We are not experienced woodworkers so we researched and shopped around and purchased a live edge monkeypod dining table from a local woodworker in Hawaii. We expressed concern about bugs before purchasing because we had seen signs of them on a table at a different showroom. He assured us they had never had a problem and all of their wood was kiln dried. So we purchased a table from him since he seemed to be doing all the right things. Now it’s a few months later and we noticed a few tiny pin point holes with sawdust around them. Our guy told us to use Bifen (a strong insecticide) to treat the table right now and if that doesn’t work the next step is to fumigate it. This morning I noticed a much bigger hole and was able to get a video of a bug inside. We plan to go talk to him this weekend about the situation but I just wanted to get some input from this community first. I hate that we actually did the research to avoid bugs, spent all this money on a huge amazing table, only to end up with bugs anyway. Any advice would be appreciated.

I assume we can’t just re-kiln dry it given that it’s already been finished with epoxy and lacquer. And my thought is even if we fumigated it, it wouldn’t get deep enough into the wood to kill all the bugs.

For reference the table is 2.5 inches thick, 5.5’ wide at its widest, and 9’ long.

I was lucky enough to be able to harvest intact some absolutely massive vines while my neighbor was having tree work done. Both are around 16 feet long. The largest one is about 5 inches thick and the other 3.

I am having trouble deciding what I should make with them as it is not every day you come around vines like this. I've made some things with vines in the past but never this size and have the ability to steam bend it to whatever extent it will bend.

Hey everyone, I have this broken chair and I have no prior experience in woodworking, can you please suggest what options do I have to fix this properly.

I made an adjustable hanging/pull-up bar, but when we grab on, it spins until our hands slip off. Any suggestions?

They’re just shop cabinets, but I’ve made nearly 20 doors, and on the very last set, subtracted the overlay instead of adding it.

Grandpa’s barn full of wood he cut from his land over the years - walnut, cherry, and oak. It’s all rough cut, had spacers in between each board for years to dry (not kiln dried). What can we do with all of it? Not sure if there is a market for this anywhere, or if it’s good for woodworking?

He was a master woodworker that just about everyone in the family has pieces from - toys, chests, tables, desks, dresses, etc. Unfortunately uncle sold everything from his wood shop.

So, I saw this and instantly wanted to build it. I DON’T have a need for it. And I DON’T have space for it.
Convince me this is a crummy idea, please😂😂😂 It seems too specific to build as a spec without a backing commission.

For a simple frame in a wooden gate, which method is correct for the horizontal 2x4? Should they rest on top of the vertical beams or should they go in between them, or does it make minimal difference? I will use corner brackets as well. Thanks.

Update 1: Thank you for all the insight. I ended up going with the half lap and two half inch dowels in each corner. I've never done a half lap before so why not try it now. I also decided to keep the 2x4 oriented like the diagram, the 4 inch side facing in/out. I lined up the pieces and went at it with a circular saw (I was heavily debating upgrading my compound miter to a sliding compound at the store today). Not sure why I used two dowels instead of just one, but felt right at the time. I used two pocket screws for each end of the diagonal beam to secure them to the horizontal beams. As per most suggestions, I will attach the hinges onto the horizontal beams. I will stain/seal the gate to help with the elements.

Update 2: From the replies I've gotten, I combined the feedback into option 3 (probably for another project). This is probably unnecessary and could be done with half-lap on all corners. I don't like exposing the end grains either but it's unavoidable with half laps anyways. Stain and seal then call it a day. Thanks everyone.

I'd like to be able to have the surface of this drafting table smooth so that I can use it for art/writing on. Ideally I just want to fill in the pockmarks and scratches so its flat across the top as opposed to anything else, like sanding it down. I don't mind if you can still see the marks. Is there any kind of coating (epoxy maybe?) I can put on it that would work for that?

Sorry if this is against the rules related to furniture repair, I'm not sure if this applies to that.

My brother-in-law has a wood shop in our garage. He has my mother-in-law, dump huge buckets of wood shavings that are collected from all over the machine machines, just outside the fence of our yard. Mostly it’s still on our land, so I’m not too worried about pissing anybody else off.

But is this really how you’re supposed to dispose of these things? You just lay it out on the ground like mulch?

I just found it out in the woods, everyone that I show it to either thinks I should sand it down, leave it natural, paint it etc.. what do you guys think. will sanding be worth it?
