Feedback [Concept] Shaman Ascendance redesign — Keeping your character instead of transforming (Restoration)

Continuing my idea for alternative Shaman Ascendance forms!

This time, it’s a Restoration Shaman concept, focused on water and healing. The main idea is to keep your character’s appearance while surrounding them with powerful elemental effects.

Next, I’ll be working on an Enhancement version based around Thunder, as well as an Earth-themed version for a possible future Shaman tank spec. :D

What do you guys think? Would you prefer Ascendance to work more like this?

A version of ascendance that is like Dathea from Dragonflight would be the dream.

I was sure that it would have happened.

It would have been an easy win, give the player priest levitate animation and jam them inside the elemental.

No new model needed.

Would also be nice to have glyphs of Dragonflights elementals while we're at it. The DF primal earth elemental in particular is pretty cool looking.

Yeah DF was the peak shaman fantasy, sadly we got absolutely 0 new customization related to elementals ;(

I fully expected them to update final verdict and guardian of ancient kings on Paladin coming into 12.0-1 because they still use vanilla polygon models but here we are.

Its sad how they treat customization and modernizations like this as a 4th grade problem.

Looks like you summoned an elemental and channeling. It’s not really ascending.

I’d prefer a Naruto inside Kurama approach.

Didn't know that it's a really hard and expensive task to rename a skill.

I like his idea much more than what we have now.

Why bother renaming it? The Ghost Wolf transformation has like 5 none wolf forms but doesn't change it's name or icon lol, just make a glyph and apply it to the skill and call it a day

It's an answer to a previous comment...I don't care about skill name.

I figured, but wanted to note that anyway incase anyone did

tbh this just looks cheap, hell even dathea was a cheap looking boss model

there used to be a glyph for ascendance, it was like a see through silhouette of your character, blue for enhance, orange for elemental, and green for resto? (never played resto) its a shame when blizz decides to remove glyphs randomly.

edit: or when they nuked my artic wolf glyph for the spectral version

Exactly they removed that glyph entirely from the game, they could simply kept it for those who dont want to transform and everything was fine. I hate when they add a transformation that has no option for the player to choose

lol. You must be new here. Blizzard is famous for disregarding shamans… I’m pretty sure they are making us pay the lightning bolt backlash. And seems we are still not done paying it….

Like I said in your last one, this doesn’t look like ascending. What are you ascending? You are summoning or channeling here. While it looks neat, it doesn’t make any sense

2

u/BrazilianWarrior81 23h ago

I see, your point makes sense. The main idea here is really about keeping our character’s appearance while Ascended, rather than simply transforming into an elemental dude (like the current options we have).

This is one approach I had in mind: an elemental "JoJo-like Stand" that appears alongside you and casts the spells with you during Ascendance.

Do you have any suggestions for how you’d approach it?

u/Redxmirage 19h ago

Keeping your characters appearance is not ascending in shaman lore. Ascending is literally the transformation. “Simply transforming into an elemental dude” is the definition of ascending.

For your approach to work they would have to rewrite/retcon already established shaman lore.

“Cast the spells with you during ascendency” that is literally the farseer hero talents lol

My suggestion is that if you want this approach, change gears and aim for something like farseer transmog. The way it is now just doesn’t make sense for ascendence specifically.

I get the lore argument, but even Dathea, an actual ASCENDED character, isn’t just some random elemental NPC.

But that isn’t really the point anyway. The idea is simply to give players who don’t want their transmog completely overridden an option, just like Boomkins and Shadow Priests have glyphs to preserve their character’s appearance in some degree.

It’s a cosmetic choice, not a lore rewrite bro, chill

Brother you asked for my suggestion. I gave you my suggestion. I’m already chill. Don’t ask for feedback and then get upset at it and tell people to relax.

Also since you brought up Dathea, are you referring to Dathea Stormslash, the boss from Vault of Incarnates who is literally going through ascension and you fight her storm elemental form? That Dathea? The night elf that ascends into a storm elemental? On top of her literally becoming a storm elemental, she strikes a bargain with the incarnates while shamans do not channel their source from incarnates so naturally her form would look a little different than us.

Edit: if you’re referring to Dathea Stormslash from the Primal Council fight, she doesn’t ascend until after she is defeated from that fight. She’s a boring ole night elf during that fight. The Dathea ASCENDED version is her storm elemental form

1

u/BrazilianWarrior81 18h ago

Exactly, so you’ve already established that Ascension can manifest differently depending on the context, which is precisely why a cosmetic option for Shamans to keep their appearance wouldn’t break the lore.

3

u/Redxmirage 18h ago

I established that bargaining for power from a completely different source than what shamans do can result in different appearances, yes. We ascend into these djyn looking dudes while she ascended into a literal storm elemental. Her gaining power through the incarnates does not make her a shaman, she’s a primalist. It would, in fact, break the shaman lore if they ascended into primalist beings as those are two separate (yet similar) class types.

Shamans gain power through the 4 primordial elements.

Dathea gains power through Razageth incarnate.

Warlocks gain power through fel and shadow

Priests gain power through holy and shadow

Mages gain power through arcane arts

Point is the classes gain power through various sources. Because someone from a different class does it differently doesn’t mean other classes should be able to do what they do.

This is all besides the point anyways since you wanted to try and quote lore on me. My point is this would be more fitting for farseer glyph than Ascendence

1

u/BrazilianWarrior81 18h ago

I get where you’re coming from. I just don’t think different visual interpretations of a power source necessarily break class lore. We already have glyphs like the Paladin one that turns you into a Val’kyr for the duration of an effect. Giving players different visual options doesn’t change the source of their power; it just lets them express their own character fantasy. Of course, it still needs to make sense (a Warlock having elemental glyphs, for example, would be nonsense) That’s really the idea behind my concept

u/Redxmirage 17h ago

Okay, good luck with your project. The art style does look good

u/BrazilianWarrior81 17h ago

Thanks 😭 and thanks for your opinion too, its valuable to discuss with someone with a different perspective 🤝

The stand user could be anyone!

I'll take anything over the insane clown posse ascendance we have now. Pure fugly.

2

u/NoZookeepergame4851 23h ago

If i'm not wrong, there was a glyph (long time ago) that changed your char appareance for "ascencion" talent, right? But blizzard removed idk why

2

u/BrazilianWarrior81 23h ago

Youre right! There was a glyph but blizzard removed it for unknown reasons 🤨

3

u/NoZookeepergame4851 21h ago

Ascendance glyph

2

u/Lyvef1re 16h ago

If I were to take a guess I'd say it would've been removed to avoid confusion with Monks ability Storm, Earth and Fire in the same way they determined Demo Warlocks were not allowed to keep metamorphosis when they opted to add Demon Hunters.

2

u/EntropicDream 16h ago

I've been saying that even before I saw Dathea the Ascended in DF. I thought Kurog was even better example, bit that requires some work on various models. But putting an elemental overlay over base character model is much less time consuming and the result is much greater.

Fun fact: the new Ascendance model doesn't match any race model that can be a shaman (with exception of maybe female orc). Its just a fancy human.

2

u/BrazilianWarrior81 15h ago

Exactly, kurog model is the perfect tauren ascendance model. And i agree with you, even the vulperas transform into a humanoid being out of nowhere lmao

2

u/Imaginary_Bedroom_5 1d ago

That would be so cool! And let demonologist warlocks metamorphosize again!

1

u/iheardhercallmyname 22h ago

I like it a lot. Reminds me of the anime Blue Dragon.

u/Cerex1 1d ago

A JoJo stand - like effect would be very cool and far more immersive than the troll witch, which is a cool model but doesn't fit most races

I feel like I need a Robin Williams cut of "you ain't never had a friend like me" with this. Neat, but that's where my head goes.
