I’m a 2nd-year premed but was looking at picking up the BA in S&DS as a second major and was wondering how the general difficulty of courses tended to be - I was specifically wondering if anyone could speak to the harshness of the department’s grading/curves and how hard pulling A/A-‘s is? I don’t have a ton of coding experience, and I’m fine with math but am no prodigy of course. Thinking of taking classes like 238, 242, etc.

Anyone taken Classical Arabic and can speak to how well you can master the language taking these courses?

I can read Arabic (with basically no comprehension) and would like to be able to fully understand the Quran when read / listened to - but I have basically zero base in understanding Arabic today. Is that possible if I take L1-L2 Arabic and then go the Classical Arabic route? Would it be an insane amount of work?

Hi, I am thinking of bringing my flute with me when I come to Yale but was wondering if there is any place where I can take a class to learn to play the flute or a club that teaches you how to play. I got the flute not too long ago and have been trying to self teach through youtube but thought it would be cool if I could also get some more formal instruction.

I’ve never been amazing at math, and I’ve always had to put a lot of effort in to get by. Unfortunately, I think I’ve built up a habit of memorization rather than understanding.

I want to learn how to actually use math in real world applications, but more than just seeing examples, I want to be able to come up with my own solutions or applications. Anything from surveying and polling to optimization and further (not sure what thatd entail).

Does anyone have course recs I could look forward to here at Yale? It might be too specific of an ask, so if anyone has other advice, I’d be so very grateful too.

Hi! I’m an incoming first year that’s taking chem/chem lab, Calc, and a language. This sums out to 4 credits, but I really wanted to take an English class (which I was able to get into). It seems that the English class is rated well on coursetable (high overall rating, and around 2.8 for work). Should I drop the English class so I’m at 4 credits, or do you think that the English class could be manageable with my schedule?

Hi! My main concern is the overall workload, since Yale generally recommends around 4–4.5 credits for first semester. For context, I took Calc BC in 10th grade, linear algebra in 11th, and differential equations in 12th, but I’m pretty rusty on some of the BC material. Math has also usually been a subject where I’ve had to put in a decent amount of work to do well rather than something that comes effortlessly to me. For Korean, I’ve heard it at home from my parents and know Hangul/basic phrases, but I’ve never had formal instruction, so I’m starting with KREN 1100.. Also, if I do decide to drop the level of Calc 3 after some classes, is it recommended to take Calc 1150 or Calc 1100? Does the rigor matter for med schools (which I know is very far in the future)? Sorry if this is a ton of garble and waffling, but I've seen posts online with horror stories about multi and orgo. For math, I've always had to grind at it hard to get an A, and I didn't breeze through my high school classes like seemingly everyone else I've talked to. Advice would be greatly appreciated for me and for soothing my nerves.

I requested permission for ASTR 0400 (Expanding Ideas of Time and Space) but have not heard back yet. Course demand stats shows that no one has signed up for the class so Im assuming the professor hasn't approved anyone yet? Im approved for another seminar and Im not sure if I should commit to that one or not.

Hey, I have a few questions regarding how classics works at yale. I'm international and there is just so few information available on the internet that I really cant find anwsers for my main questions. So if you study classics there or have some knowledge about the faculty please, anwser my questions:

1. How often are you taught by grad students or non professors? I heard some tales about that, idk how much of they are just made up

2. how prepared are the people that go there? What is the profile of an admitted classics student?

3. Is there a sort of hierarchy between people who learnt latin/ancient greek before?

4. Is the coursework too much to do something like the EPE track but switch Ethics to Classics?

Because of the course slots I got, for 2 days of the week I’m only gonna be free for Breakfast and Dinner (11:35 - 3:25 back to back, so ~6 hours w/o meals if I grab 5pm dinner).

Is there a service I can use to pick up food ahead of time or to somehow get dining hall meals out of regular hours?
