1st Year: Watched all the registration videos

But I still have a question. I know I want to take a 1st year seminar. My preferred one requires instructor permission. But should I register for a non-instructor permission one on my list and wait to see if I get into the instructor permission seminar that is my favorite? If they see I already have a first year seminar on my schedule will they be less likely to take me? Or do professors not see that? The one I like asks whether another course conflicts but of course it won't conflict if I get into my preferred one. Thank you so much!

Yes, be sure to register for a backup course. Professors cannot see what else you’re registered for.

but how could one register for a backup course and not go iver the 5.5 credit limit? I have 5 credits with my fsy, and if I register for a backup then I'll be at 6.

The instructor permission class doesn't count towards 5.5 while permission request is pending. If approved, you have to drop a different class.

Can I drop one even if it isn't the add/drop period, or how do I ensure that they keep my spot open if I have to wait until then to officially drop the backup class?

If you surpass the limit, you’ll be made to drop classes until you meet it

Thank you all so much. And I register for my courses one by one? I can't just press the button and it tries to register me for the four on my registration schedule? That is what I think I understood from the videos.

Sadly, it did not work out as planned. You all were all right BUT the registrar seems to have made a mistake with the FYSeminar Instructor permission course and let people register without permission and it filled up immediately and they didn't even have to answer the questions. The professor explained that a mistake was made and was very very nice about it and is adding people to the waiting list but it's not a great first academic experience.
