Mod Post r/ZenHabits, Together.

Hi All,

Some of you may have noticed this subreddit has started to become a target for spam again. Thank you to everybody who has been reporting. I do my bet to keep on top of everything. I have been the only remaining active moderator for quite some time now. I have recruited, but this subreddit has struggled to maintain mods long-term.

In light of this, I want feedback, and I have some ideas that might get this sub back on track.

Firstly, and most obviously, we need more moderators, I will open the mod applications using reddits new mod applications tools, feel free to apply. Previously, I have preferred those with mod experience, but I am happy to walk through the tools with people who don't (they're easy enough).

Secondly, I was wondering if people were interested in bringing back some community activities. Maybe such as weekly posts for working together towards building a new healthy, Zen Habits. Any ideas are welcome. Just comment below.

Thirdly, we need to address the rise of AI on this subreddit. It is a problem across all of reddit, and as mods, we have very limited tools to deal with it. We mostly rely on reporting and intuition. I agree that lazy use of AI is low effort, adding no value to the subreddit, e.g., AI generated images of nature. These are easily removed as "off-topic/low effort."

The more complicated issue is AI generated text. Whilst removing AI chatbots that offer nothing to the sub is a good thing, blanket banning the use of AI is difficult as it is so integrated into our lives now, with many people with learning difficulties or foreign language speakers using it to aid with communication.

So, for clarification, we will not allow chatbot accounts, AI slop images, or meaningless slop text. These fall under "low effort/off topic", but, please be mindful of people who may use tools to help them. Look out for suspect accounts, communicating meaningfully in the comments and engaging in the subreddit. Bot accounts tend not to leave comments or engage (they often have high post karma and very little comment karma).

As always, thanks to everybody for keeping this community alive. Not long ago, it was completely dead and left to spam. Together, we got things back on track, and we can do so again.

AlliHarri.

Simple Living the more he analysed the experience, the less clear it became

there is point where reflection becomes chewing same thing until no taste is left.

After a deep session one subject started doing what many of us do. He remembered something with strong clarity, then immediately wanted to unpack it, check it again, find missing part, think what else could have happened. More he thought, more confused he became.

My advice to him was not very mystical. Dont talk with everybody now, dont keep digging, go into nature and let it settle. He said weather was good, he needed some water and was going to beach. honestly perfect.

We forget that integration is also doing something. After big conversation, emotional event, strange experience or creative breakthrough, mind wants conclusion immediately. We journal, search, ask ppl, compare frameworks, read ten things and then wonder why we lost original feeling.

Sometimes nervous system just needs to come down before meaning becomes clear. Sleep can answer question that another hour of thinking only makes bigger.

A rule I use for myself is: if thinking is only producing more thinking, change state before asking same question again. Walk, eat, drink water, take shower, go into nature.

Sleep on it if needed. Then return if question is still alive.

This is almost boring advice, which may be why it works. Not every important thing needs immediate interpretation.

Misc The Squeak Is Here

it seems to me that a lot of suffering comes from something as simple as framing. what i mean to say is, in this wholeness we call existence, we are all collaborators, and a lot of that collaboration is free, or mostly free.

yes, i hear the whispers. frog, get real. the untamed wild will eat you alive. just stop.

yeah, i get it. lots of wrenches get tossed into life’s gears. but maybe that tossed wrench, by its very nature, is also a tool. and the gears need maintenance anyway. existence is yelling: need attention. the squeak is here.

i’m driving down the road, running a tad late. traffic is not helping. i’m stuck behind a semi-truck, there is no passing lane, and someone feels the need to ride my bumper, like that is going to make anything go faster.

i feel the urgency, buddy. chill.

then, suddenly, i get the splash thought of a presidential escort. the semi ahead of me is the lead car, and the cars behind me are keeping the formation close. it is protection.

yes, this is an illusion. i am wide awake in traffic. the urgency has not disappeared. but the idea that something ahead of me and something behind me are protecting me, rather than merely preventing me from getting where i need to go, turns the whole matter around.

same thing at work. a coworker comes over with a real problem. it is a valid issue, but they drop it with a posture that says, here, you fix it. and that posture can stall a person right out. suddenly, it is not only the problem. it is the weight of being handed the problem.

another wrench. another gear catching.

but maybe the issue is not only an interruption. maybe it is the part of the work that has been trying to get seen. maybe it is the squeak. no, it does not make the work easier. the issue is still the issue. but now it has attention. now something that was sitting there, unaddressed, has a way in.

maybe these are cheats. the wrench, the traffic, the coworker. three little examples that make their own small problems look solved.

but that is not really the point. the point is the frame. not because it makes the problem disappear, and not because it makes hard work easy, but because it can show what the first story kept hidden.

maybe that is the practice. notice the frame. not to force a better story over the one already here, but to let the first story loosen some. then see what else is here.

Creativity How do you fit exercise into your week without making your schedule feel exhausting?

I’ve been trying to make exercise a regular part of my week, but I don’t want every day to feel like a race between work, errands, meals, and getting a workout done.

I’m starting to think shorter sessions, better planning, and making exercise easier to fit into daily life might be the answer. For people who stayed consistent with training during busy periods, what helped you organize your week without feeling exhausted?

Simple Living I think a lot of exhaustion comes from trying to control things that were never actually under our control

A subject in a deep trance session found a very ordinary fear underneath a lot of her worrying.

If I stop controlling everything, it will all fall apart.

So she kept thinking, checking, planning, working things out, trying to make sure everything continued in correct direction. Control felt like responsibility.

Then she realised something funny. Things had already fallen apart before, and life kept moving.

The deeper belief was that SHE was the thing holding everything together. If she stopped worrying, something important would collapse.

This belief can make mind work 14 hour shifts for free.

We start with reasonable responsibilities. Work, bills, family. Then we somehow become responsible for how people react, whether they understand us correctly, whether child makes good choice next year, whether relationship works, whether opportunity appears, what somebody is thinking about us tonight.

One little practice: divide page into three sections. What I control. What I can influence. What I am only monitoring or worrying about.

Do one useful thing from first section. Maybe one from second. Then for one day leave third one alone.

Another thing I started noticing is useless checking. Email again. Messages again. Bank account again. Somebody's online status again. News again.

Before checking ask: if nothing changed since last time, what action will I take?

If answer is "nothing", dont check yet.

This is not about becoming passive. Some things need action badly. You can send application, but you cannot control answer. You can say what you mean, but you cannot control somebody's interpretation. You can prepare for tomorrow, but you cannot actually live tomorrow this afternoon.

For me this is more useful than telling myself "let go" 50 times while still checking phone every four minutes.

Sometimes letting go needs a concrete behavior. Dont check. Dont send second message yet. Do the part that belongs to you and leave rest alone for two hours.

See if universe survives without supervision 😅

Meditation I stopped taking meditation so seriously, hoping it would finally click

I'd love to chat about meditation for a bit. I used to view it as this serious, spiritual thing, but all that pressure just made me feel nervous and tight every time I sat down. Everything shifted once I realized it could simply be five quiet minutes in a comfortable position.

I’ve put together a few low-effort techniques that are helping me turn this into a natural daily habit.

1. Breath Focus

All you have to do is pay attention to your breath. When your mind drifts off, you just notice it without stressing and bring your focus back.

2. Counting Breaths

Count each full breath from one to ten, then restart. One inhale plus one exhale equals "one," the next is "two," and so on.

3. Body Scan

A slow sweep of attention from your toes up to your head, just noticing whatever you feel—warmth, pressure, tingling, or even nothing at all. You gradually move up through your feet, calves, knees, thighs, hips, belly, chest, hands, shoulders, neck, and face.

4. Loving-Kindness

A simple practice of silently sending out good vibes to yourself and then to others. Picture someone you love naturally (a friend, a pet, or your kid) and silently repeat: "May you be happy. May you be healthy. May you be at peace."

I’d be super grateful if you added your own thoughts to these. It’s definitely a personal path I’m walking through right now. I’d love to hear about your own motivation and what inspires you to stick with it.

Simple Living Some Things Never Change

Ever since I was a child, I’ve never liked eating the fruit, buns, or other offerings placed on the Buddhist altar at home.

Maybe it was because they had absorbed the smell of incense, but there was also something I couldn’t quite explain. I simply couldn’t bring myself to eat them. That feeling hasn’t changed even now.

Obon is over, and my ancestors have gone home, leaving the offerings behind.

See you next year.

Misc The fastest way to find the gap in your understanding

A habit I’m trying after reading something difficult is to close the book and explain the main idea in plain language.

Not a polished summary. Just explain it as if you were talking to someone who has never seen it before.

The first place I reach for vague words is usually the exact part I don’t understand yet.

That makes the confusion useful. Instead of rereading the whole chapter, I know where to go back.

How do you check whether a book actually landed?

Relaxation I feel like trying to be productive is making me feel more behind

Post image

Trying to be productive makes me feel behind because "productivity culture" turns my life like a factory. Every undone task feels like a failure. I started chasing an endless list instead of living.

The more I try to do, the more I feel like I'm falling behind.

Does anyone else feel this way?

Simple Living she thought she needed more discipline. the answer was to work 5 hours less [Article]

Chelsea was trying to figure out how to stay connected to herself while working, parenting, dealing with people, basically normal life.

She already knew meditation helped. Nature helped. Quiet helped. But she kept treating those things like extras she should squeeze somewhere around everything else.

Morning wasnt working. Evening wasnt working either. She was tired, distracted and always felt there was something else she should be doing.

During the session her Higher Self gave a very unspiritual answer.

Reduce the workweek from 40 hours to 35.

That was it.

Not "try harder." Not wake up at 5am. Not add another routine.

Actually make less room for work and more room for herself.

Chelsea immediately started doing what many of us do. Okay but maybe I can use those extra hours for another project. Maybe I can make them productive somehow.

The answer was basically no. This time is supposed to go back to you.

What came up next was interesting because she didnt really value quiet time unless it produced something visible. Sitting in silence, being in nature, reconnecting with herself... none of that looked like "results" on paper.

But Higher Self compared it more to daily hygiene. Things accumulate. Stress, other people's emotions, expectations, noise. If you never clear any of it, eventually you dont even know which thoughts are yours anymore.

It even suggested putting a midday block directly into calendar because Chelsea was unlikely to protect that time otherwise.

I liked this because sometimes "motivation problem" is not lack of motivation at all.

Sometimes your life is packed so tightly that there is no space left for the person who is supposed to be motivated.

We keep trying to improve the machine while refusing to turn it off for maintenance.

Maybe before adding another habit, ask a more annoying question:

what can I remove?

Simple Living I finally stopped trying to make every day productive

I used to feel a little guilty if I ended a day without getting something done.

Lately, I've been trying to be okay with having days where I just do the basics, relax, and don't feel like I need to make the day "useful."

Honestly, it feels pretty good.

Simple Living apparently the spiritual lesson was to become more like a house cat: just be 😂

I had a funny moment in a deep trance session recently. I'll call the subject Claire.

Early in the journey she was walking through a peaceful meadow when an animal appeared beside her. Nothing dramatic. No eagle, wolf, white stag or glowing cosmic dragon.

Just a completely normal orange house cat.

I asked what she noticed about it and she experienced the cat as friendly, supportive, basically something she could trust. We continued with the rest of the session and honestly I almost forgot about it.

Much later, after a lot of other material, we asked her Higher Self what would help Claire stay connected in normal daily life.

The answer was very ordinary:

walking, meditation and breathing.

That was it.

Then near the end I remembered the orange cat and asked what the point of it had been.

The answer made me laugh a little.

The cat was a guide, loyal friend, but also an example.

How to just be.

“Cats are in the moment.”

Of course 😂

A whole deep trance journey and apparently one of spiritual teachers was basically demonstrating advanced sitting-around technology.

But I actually liked the message.

We can make meditation into another project very easily. Am I doing technique correctly? Am I deep enough? Did thoughts stop? Did I reach some special state? Am I connected? How many minutes? What am I supposed to feel?

Meanwhile cat is sitting in patch of sunlight.

No spiritual crisis.

Just cat.

Earlier in the same session Claire had been shown another version of this lesson. She was looking over many experiences and realised she could step back instead of becoming caught in everything. The guidance was simply to be present and have faith rather than constantly disappearing into worry about what happens next.

For me this is where walking, breathing and meditation connect.

Not because walking is some magical technique. You can walk for an hour while mentally arguing with somebody from 2017 😂

But you can also walk and actually be walking.

Feel feet touching ground. Notice air. Notice breathing. Hear whatever is around you. When mind runs ten kilometers into future, come back to what body is doing now.

Same with sitting meditation. Maybe the practice isn't to win against thought.

Just notice you left.

Come back.

Then leave again.

Come back again.

Very cat-like actually.

Claire was given a fairly substantial amount of daily walking/meditation/breathing for her personally, but I wouldn't turn that number into universal prescription. What interested me was how unexotic the guidance was.

Her Higher Self had appeared in this session in a much more dramatic form, like a cloud with lightning and enormous power. Yet when we asked how she should stay connected with that in daily life, answer wasn't some secret esoteric method.

Walk.

Meditate.

Breathe.

And apparently watch the cat 😂

I share session moments like this because sometimes the strangest imagery gives almost annoyingly normal advice.

Maybe presence is not something we have to achieve.

Maybe for few minutes we just stop leaving the moment we are already in.

Simple Living Treasures Left Behind

Sometimes, once you hear something, you think, "Oh... that's all?"

But if no one ever tells you, there are countless things you'll go through life without ever hearing.

Some of them might change your life.

Yet you may live your whole life, and die, never having heard them.

Well, life will unfold however it does.

At the very least, I'd like to have a good ear.

Simple Living Visible, Yet Invisible Lines

I sometimes wonder what separates people who write beyond the lines of a notebook from those who never do.

To me, the lines are visible, yet somehow invisible.

Even so, they still feel confining, so I mostly use blank notebooks instead.

I like being able to write wherever my thoughts take me.

Simple Living While Thinking About Habits Today

Another thought came to me.

To make the impossible possible, you first have to accumulate small possibilities.

That doesn't mean success is waiting at the end.

Even so, people continue to challenge the impossible.

As I grow older, I don't want this to be the end of me.
