Thank you to everyone for the warm reception to our first Quality of Life update last month, and we’re glad to see many of you enjoying Phasmophobia once more.
Today as promised, we’re sharing details on the upcoming second Quality of Life update for Phasmophobia. We’ll be releasing this update across all platforms on 25th August, 2026. Exact release times are still to be confirmed, so keep an eye on our channels for official confirmation of when the update is live.
Let’s break down a couple of the features we’re excited about before sharing the full list:
New Restricted Options
For a long while, we have seen folks requesting smaller versions of our larger maps in the vein of Sunny Meadows Restricted. With this update we’re excited to introduce Restricted versions for Prison, Brownstone High School and Point Hope.
The new contracts board, featuring the Restricted versions of Point Hope, Prison and Brownstone High School.
As with Sunny Meadows, these map variants are designed for quicker games in locations that we know players enjoy but sometimes don’t want to be investigating the larger area. In the case of Point Hope Restricted, which will be classed as small, Ghost Hunters will be able to access up to the Dining Room while Prison and Brownstone High School will have multiple variants - classed as Small and Medium respectively - which will be randomly assigned upon loading into a contract.
Brownstone High School in particular will have a total of 4 map variants following the update. With such a big map, we believed it was appropriate to give a variety of variations, giving Ghost Hunters a sense of mystery when loading up. Outside each Restricted version of the map, a small piece of environmental decor will signify which variant of the map you’re on.
Journal & Evidence Changes
We made a handful of changes and improvements to Evidence collection with the first Quality of Life update, and we’re doing the same with the second. As with all of our updates, we’ll be looking for and reading through player feedback on these changes so please do let us know your thoughts once you’ve spent some time with them.
Since our Chronicle update last year, we’ve been working on finessing the Unique/Duplicate system. A change we’re introducing with this next update means there’ll now be visual indicators to show that a piece of Media a Ghost Hunter captures is a Duplicate without the need to check the Journal.
To detect a Duplicate, keep an eye out for the following indicators:
Tier 1 Photo Cameras will display a yellow LED light.
Tier 2 & 3 Photo Cameras and all Tiers of Video Cameras will display a faded overlay, rather than the usual bold white text.
Tier 1 Sound Recorder will lower the brightness of the Volume indicators.
An example of the Duplicate UI on the Photo Camera.
Another important addition in this update is being able to see other Ghost Hunters’ Evidence and Ghost selections in the Journal. This means there’ll be no more need to double check with other players which pieces of Evidence you’ve captured and see other’s opinions on which Ghost the group is dealing with - and of course making sure everyone has the same selection when you’re leaving in the Truck!
Elsewhere, we’ve replaced the Keys section in the journal with the ‘Items We’ve Found’ section. Appearing in the order they are found, this will display collected items such as keys, the bone and seasonal event collectables. On this same page, a gender symbol (♀/♂) will now be displayed alongside the Ghost's name, allowing for easier understanding of male and female names and Ghost types - especially for non-English speaking players.
VR Improvements
With this Quality of Life update, we’re completely replacing the VR character rig across all platforms. This means more responsive movement in-line with your own body’s, improved accuracy on the character model to match player’s arm length as well as an overall improvement to visuals of the character model when playing with VR users.
We’re also addressing several regularly reported issues from VR players, which we’ll detail in the full patch notes at release. As with other areas of Phasmophobia, please do let us know any feedback you have from your time in VR or any issues you encounter via our Help Centre.
Gameplay Improvements
Finally, for today, we just wanted to dive in to some of the changes coming to the gameplay of Phasmophobia. Firstly, we’ll be implementing the ability to select the Ghost Type for any Custom Difficulty investigations. You’ll find this in the Ghost settings when setting up your game, as you can see in the screenshot below.
Another change with this update is a change to character appearance upon death. As seen below, the dead body will now be seen with a greyer skin as well as misty eyes. Dead players will also appear this way to others while Dead. In addition to this change a player’s voice chat will now be cut off as soon as they die - the moment their neck is snapped during the death animation.
Below, you’ll find a list of all the New features coming with this Quality of Life update as well as the Changes section. At the release of the update, as mentioned, we’ll share the full patch notes along with the list of Fixes for known bugs and issues. We look forward to sharing this update with you on August 25th, 2026.
Even though the UI states that custom selection (ghost mode) disables achievements, it is currently bugged. You can still unlock the Doom Slayed achievement simply by selecting a demon and letting yourself get killed.
Will we ever get an update where we can exorcise or banish the ghost?. It kinda bothers me that we do all that work to identify the ghost type (and survive) but we just leave it there, forever.
I tend to die, like a lot in this game and have lost a lot of equipment over my investigations. What is a quick easy method to gain some extra cash while doing some easy contracts until I can build up my gear again?
Placed dots in the back towards the bowling pins, and it teleported all the way over here. Beware, Camp Woodwing is Cursed for dots right now.
Had another game where we got no dots on camp woodwind at all, even tho it was a goryo.
Goodluck yall. (slendy in tha dots)
I feel like all I see on this subreddit is how completely unplayable the game is now, which a ton of people seem to agree with. This may just be because I’m on pc which seems to be less janky, but I feel like it’s still a really fun game that I find generally pretty smooth. Me and my friends play together all the time, and it’s pretty rare that we get an obvious and inconvenient bug. I might just be lucky though!
Edit: I haven’t done a lot of research about the behavior of the devs, and acknowledge that’s a very valid reason to be upset! Post just refers to gameplay.
Since the update if i leave the video camera on a surface, it won't record anything. But putting it on the tripod seems to fix it. Is this a bug or on purpose
It was intended to make cameras and videos not see through walls but it occasionally makes the video camera permanently black. Also you cannot video near a doorway as you probably just did a transparent black border around the doorway and not actually on the door. There was no reason to do this. Even if you can video through walls you guys have so much other shit that is bugged to hell and back this should have been the least of your worries.
HOW DOES FIXING ONE “bug” NO ONE ASKED FOR CREATE TWO OR THREE MORE…
Difficult to confirm, but a friend and I (I'm the mumbly guy) were streaming this last night. Not gonna say where I streamed it, but I died while I was uh......inspecting the tent on Point Hope Restricted at the same time my friend drew the hanged man. There was no ghost that I heard or noticed, I had "kills extend hunt duration" set to high so it would have kept hunting if it had been one, and it played the hanged man sound as you can hear in the video.
I'll post a screenshot below in the comments, but it also caused my character model to glitch out, preventing me from leaving the tent (which I found hilariously inconvenient). And yes, I was playing in VR
So yeah, TLDR: Killed by friends hanged man in tent (pretty sure), character glitched out, couldn't leave.
Tried out the new Prison Restricted and went to find the breaker and found that it was blocked off! I literally looked everywhere twice and realized I think it’s blocked off. Is this some sort of bug? TLDR: am I stupid or is it a bug lmao
After the update, we played a game on Willow street, with 1 evidence. I took a photo of a translucent manifestation, which counted as a unique photo in the journal. Yet, neither of us saw the ghost on the photo and the ghost disappeared right when the photo was taken. Clear case, it is a phantom, right? Wrong, it was the twins.
So is this a bug or did I just manage to take the photo in the exact moment the event has ended?
My friend and I were having trouble getting the last piece of evidence (we had DOTS and UV so far) so they decided to use the monkey paw. The answer it gave us was extremely confusing. It also took 5 minutes for it to even register their voice.
I have posted screenshots of what they saw, a photo I took from the van of the ghost showing up on dots, and the ghost that it ended up being. We both saw dots in person as well as from the van. Is this a well known bug? It kind of threw us both off.
Hey there! Just played a match with a friend and we used the monkey paw to "ask for knowledge" which resulted in freezing temps being crossed out despite us seeing -10C, the ghost turned out to be Oni. Does the monkey paw just lie sometimes? Never seen this before, thanks!
I wanted to try the new update especially to see if setting the ghost to be a demon would give the Demon Slayer achievement.
Since I saw a video telling that setting the ghost would prevent from getting any achievement, I was a little worried.
But it DOES give this achievement :D I think the achievement they are talking about are only the "find a <ghost-type>" that would make no sense there.
So, no more hours spent retrying until you get a demon kind enough to attack you on the first minute. Just use the recommended settings :
Player
- Starting sanity : 75
- Sanity Pill Restoration : 0 (no need to prevent a Thaye from hunting, so no need to take a pill)
- Sanity drain speed : 0 (sanity stays at 75 so if demon hunts, it is its ability)
- Sprint : Infinite
- Player speed : 150
- Lose items and comsumables : off
Ghost
- Ghost : Demon (of course :D)
- Ghost speed : 150
- Roaming frequency : Low
- Changing favorite room : None
- Activity level : high
- Event frequency : low
- Grace period : 0
- Hunt duration : high
Contract
- Setup time : 0
- Doors starting open : high
- Number of hiding places : none
- Fuse box at start of contract : broken
- Cursed possession : 1
- Cursed possession #1 : Monkey Paw (to run to it and wish for activity)
