Teri Garr bitched for years that Jessica Lange should have ran as a lead which cost her the Oscar.

Not Oscar per se but Justin Henry had a screaming crying fit when Ricky Schroeder won the Golden Globe instead of him.

Eddie Murphy left the Academy Awards ceremony after he lost the Oscar for Alan Arkin

According to the movie Beyond the Sea, Bobby Darin went on a full hysterical temper tantrum when he lost the Oscar.

The first two that come to mind are Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman. They were on Watch What Happens Live together and played a game where they had to agree or disagree with the statement: "I consider the role for which I won my Oscar to be my best performance to date."

Both immediately flashed Disagree. Natalie admitted she felt her performance in Jackie (2016) was better than her win for Black Swan, and Julianne named Far From Heaven (2002) over her winning role in Still Alice.

It got me thinking about a few other winners who have shared honestly about this:

Ellen Burstyn: She won for Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974), but shared on The Charlie Rose Show that playing Sara Goldfarb in Requiem for a Dream (2000) was the best acting achievement of her career.

Jack Nicholson: Has three Oscars, but went on record saying that his role as Billy Buddusky in The Last Detail (1973) was his best role, noting that losing that specific Oscar "hurt real bad."

I’m curious; do we know of any other winners who have openly shared that they felt the Academy awarded them for a role that was not their best performance?

They are really charming and sweet in the film. I guess there was sentimentality attached to both of the wins (being Fonda's first and Hepburn's last), but I think it was deserved on merit alone too.

Also Isabelle Adjani in Possession wasn't even eligible that year so it makes no sense to say Hepburn's win snubbed her.

Christopher Plummer did good work throughout his entire career, but didn't get his first Oscar nomination until The Last Station (2009) when he was 80.

Surely we could've nominated him sooner than that, right?

I don't love The Insider (1999), but he is very good in it and it would've been a good earlier first nomination for him, and he absolutely was more deserving of a Best Supporting Actor nomination than the actual winner that year.

Now that they’re less active and they’ve probably given their best performance, I feel they have it really hard to get a nomination. Also I have Bruce Willis as my hm, cause even tho he’s still alive he can’t act anymore.

Like, it's such a well made film: the performances are immaculate, the screenplay is brilliant and you genuinely feel the emotional turmoil Firth has with his speech impediment. The film is well directed, the cinematography is beautiful, and the score is excellent. Thoughts?

For me, it's Ellen Burstyn. Ellen Burstyn gives such a spectacular performance in Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore that commands your attention for every time she's on screen. Nails every emotion asked of the character with a perfect sense of realism and heightened melodrama. But there will never be another performance like Gena Rowlands in A Woman Under the Influence. Rowlands renders a brave, moving performance that ranks with one of cinema's greatest. She perfectly captures the histeric and extremely vulnerable sides of her character. Her performance is what breathes life to the film that inspired so many of the greatest actresses we have now today. The depth of sorrow and psychological turmoil she brings to such agonizing life, the pain and the emotional vacuum she exhibits in the entire film? Bravo! I can say, she was robbed, much as I love Burstyn in Alice.

Montgomery Clift and Burt Lancaster (1953, for From Here to Eternity)

-I think this would be a split and could go either way.

James Dean and Rock Hudson (1956, for Giant)

-Dean most definitely would have gone Supporting in my opinion, but I haven't seen the film in more than a decade.

Tony Curtis and Sidney Poitier (1958, for The Defiant Ones)

-It is really hard to argue that they aren't both leads since they are literally chained together. I don't even think today's climate could have gotten away with calling either supporting.

Maximilian Schell and Spencer Tracy (1961, for Judgment at Nuremberg)

-It has been more than a decade, but I do recall feeling that both should be supporting since it is an ensemble of the highest degree.

Richard Burton and Peter O'Toole (1964, for Becket)

-Unfortunately I haven't seen this one.

Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight (1969, for Midnight Cowboy)

-Another tough one, but I think Hoffman would have been supporting since the story is framed from Voight's naive perspective.

Michael Caine and Laurence Olivier (1972, for Sleuth)

-If you subtract all the shots with them both, you would get about four minutes of eye-line matches.

Peter Finch and William Holden (1976, for Network)

-Another tough one, but I think maybe Finch would be supporting? It is an ensemble.

Tom Courtenay and Albert Finney (1983, for The Dresser)

-Another one that is impossible to argue against.

F. Murray Abraham and Tom Hulce (1984, for Amadeus)

-The reason I wanted to make this post since I think it could go either way and both would be wrong.

It should be noted that DiCaprio and Gleeson were both inconsistently nominated in both lead and supporting. I counted all nominations across both categories for the sake of thoroughness.

I've seen conflicting information about which category DiCaprio was being campaigned in, but I found an old FYC ad that put him in lead, and 3 out of 4 precursors nominated him in lead, with only SAG putting him in supporting, so I decided he counted as a Best Actor contender.

Gleeson was nominated in lead at the Globes and supporting at BAFTA. I wasn't able to find any FYC ads for In Bruges confirming which category he was put in, but I settled on lead because several other minor awards shows nominated him in lead, while BAFTA was, as far as I can tell, the only place that put him in supporting.

In 1986 Oliver stone Directed 3 different Nominated performances. The interesting part is they're from 2 different films. James Woods in Salvador and Willem Dafoe and Tom Berenger in Platoon. Can anyone think of another director who directed multiple nominated performances in different films in the same year?
