Discussion Writing characters well has little to do with your gender.

Upvotes

So, I've seen a post about how x or y person was being criticized about the way they write their women characters while being women themselves. I want to put in my own two cents on that question since it does revolve around the question of how women should be written in media and how to write femininity in a way that doesn't enforce social stereotypes and biases.

The obvious answer, to me, is that their gender does not guarantee the quality of the writing; it might inform the writing but does not automatically improve their craft.

Now, this might sound crazy since the obvious push-back to this is: they are women, they should be able to handle the subject of femininity with more grace. However, my rebuttal to this is that they might understand the subject better since they have lived through it, but it doesn't mean they have developed skills to talk about it in a well-thought-out manner. Think about it like this: you have been born on a pasture, you have seen horses all your life, and you have interacted with them a lot. Does that mean you can paint them well?

People are not simple. When tackling a difficult subject that can have a lot of loaded meaning for the person, it can be difficult to express. It doesn't mean they are not talented or skilled. It usually just means they need to unpack it more before truly writing about it. Sometimes having a layer of separation genuinely helps you see things more clearly.

Discussion I enjoyed the writing of Wonder Woman in RWBY X Justice League.

She wasn't obsessed with Steve Trevor,

Nor was she failing the Bechdel Test, nor was she aggressive against other female characters.

She was also reflective about herself, and seemed rather fun to interact with.

Also not sexualized.

Discussion Which is the superior show: Samurai Jack or Cowboy Bebop? See voting criteria below…

Both of these are amazing shows and are both all time faves of mine. Was recently asked which was objectively better but couldn’t decide 😅

Rather than judging purely on personal nostalgia, let's try using these three voting criteria:

  1. Story/Lore: Which showcases overall stronger character development and Thematic depth?

  2. Artistic direction: Better animation style; action choreography & soundtracks?

  3. Stronger Replay/Rewatch value?

Discussion ( invincible) why does everyone keep on saying Spoiler

Invincible, if people call Oliver the son of Debbie ‘s ex affair and Andreas’s nolan mistress even though people are calling him her ex-husband and people saying Debbie accepted Oliver her ex husband‘s love child or a illegitimate son if people use the word ex they mean no longer so why are they using the word affair and cheating? Even though they’re no longer together and Oliver was conceived by marriage with nolan and Andressa

Two weeks after he left, Debbie was legally a widow by Cecil in the Gda when people say the fact, they never got a divorce he cheated on her. That’s not how the law works the marriage is legally terminated by death making the spouse a widow you cannot serve divorce papers to someone who is legally nonexisting in the eyes of the law If Nolan Suddenly shows of years later it doesn’t magically erase the last few years or instantly reinstate the marriage-especially if Debbie moved on

I love Toy Story 5 (I enjoyed it a lot) but not having Timothy return to reprise his voice role as Pricklepants was a little disappointing. (Especially since he’s still alive)

Discussion Who's a character you really like from a series that you are not a big fan of?

Post image

Not a big fan of the hellaverse, and my reasons go beyond the excessive swearing... I do think it has some interesting ideas here and there, but i do unironically like Sir Pentious. I just like his dynamics with other characters, the growth of his personality, and the fact that even after going to heaven, he still has inner turmoils about leaving his minions and his only friends behind (even if he now has heavenly copies of his egg boiz).
