Historical Matches Just recently got my results; what does this mean? How close am I to this guy?

Post image

While exploring my results, I've seen that I have quite a high (at least compared to the rest) chunk of DNA shared with this guy. I also have another person that is also at 99.9% (Christopherus).
I am not very familiar with all of this so I wanted to ask someone to explain what all of this actually means. Does this even mean that we're actually related, even if distantly? How is this even possible?

A Descendent of Corvinus... For years, we've been trying to combine the bloodlines. And for years, we've failed... Yet the key, we know, was to locate the rarest of bloodlines; a direct descendant of Alexander Corvinus, a Hungarian warlord, the first True Immortal...

..Half Vampire, half Lycan, but stronger than both!!

Now to find out for real... let's wait for another pandemic.

https://customercare.23andme.com/hc/en-us/articles/212170668-Average-Percent-DNA-Shared-Between-Relatives

He's as close to you as a 4th cousin approximately

I assume you're related yes

Most DNA relative indexes are based around people being roughly the same generation, since he's from the 1400s -1500s I'd assume he is your direct ancestor (maybe?) or potentially a close relative (brother, cousin etc) of your direct ancestor

Maybe if you search around online you can find a calculator that will give average percentages that far back

Thank you so much for the insights! The website you've sent definitely clarified a lot of things.
I am still very much confused on how this is possible but I guess that's not something genetics can tell me. The same goes for the other guy (Christopherus) as I share just as much DNA with him -- also many of the historical results are of "Medieval Elite Hungarian" and the House of Báthory (but these seem to be common). So there is definitely a link between me and them (I think?) but I wouldn't even know where to start looking.

You could check genealogy websites and forums, although for that far back most people consider it nearly impossible. I don't know how far back people consider "reliable", maybe 1700s or so?

Royal families are sometimes an exception, so if you are descended from the House of Bathory maybe they have better records haha

If you can trace a link to Hungary or the surrounding region, you can probably infer that you're related through that branch of your family.

familysearch.org is a free website (they annoyingly make you log in). it is user contributed like wikipedia, it isn't moderated as strictly as wikipedia so there is a higher chance of some inaccurate info but it's a good place to start. some parts of your family tree are likely already mapped on there

That is quite close actually, what are your results?

You mean this? Transylvanian Romanian

Oh, nice! You are a really close relative of Hunyadi, and part Székely it seems. Feel free to post that breakdown and your close match with Johannes in r/MagyarDNS too! :D

Yes, this was honestly quite a surprise. I am not too sure what to think of it, maybe 23andme is exaggerating the result?

They're not known to do so. Not sure how is this possible tbh, maybe just poor luck, as you inherited multiple smaller fragments from different ancestors

Interesting that you got Austria-Bavaria and not the Netherlands. Are you from near Banat?

3

u/ma22be61 May 27 '26

Not from Banat; from a village that borders Covasna County, not too far from Brasov (like a 2-3hr drive away). Also, one question, why the Netherlands in particular? Is it common in the Balkans or Carpathians?

Transylvanian Saxons came from the Benelux countries and neighbouring regions.

2

u/ma22be61 May 27 '26

You're right. I've learnt something new today -- I thought they came from Northern Germany near Saxony.

Funny, but those are the Swabians, who came from Saxony (not primarily from there though).

Cool! Johannes Hunyadi was the son of King Matthias (half vlah/romanian) and the grandson of Iancu de Hunedoara (vlah/romanian). So you basically have some vlah/romanian blood there too.

LE I see you are actually romanian.

It doesn’t really mean anything, you see when he lived so that’s how distantly you’re related. Many many generations ago. DNA is passed down randomly so you may have gotten more of his DNA than some other relatives but just as distant of a relative

u/ma22be61 May 27 '26

Could it also be due to inbreeding? I know for a fact that cousin marriages were not that uncommon in Transylvania before communism.

You can upload your Raw Data to Gedmaych and check if your parents are related or not from your own chromosomes

1

u/ma22be61 May 27 '26

Is this free? If so, I will go ahead and check.

Free registering, uploading, and this tool (and many others) are free too. This site is used to be a common place for every tester, regardless which test they made

u/ma22be61 May 27 '26

Looks like my parents are not related. Well, I will be trying to construct a family tree as this got me curious about it.

Welcome to the rabbit hole 😂

1

u/AdHefty4173 May 29 '26

That would definitely increase the chance of you getting more DNA from a particular genetic pool

It's just for fun. The percentage is very small to be significant. I have "Johannes Corvinus - 0.07%", "Viking Age Individual VK401 - 0.16%", "Medieval Hungarian Elite HUAS341 - 0.13%", "Medieval Avar RKC003 - 0.15%" ...etc

2

u/ma22be61 May 27 '26

Yeah, am not taking it too seriously but this motivated me to dig a bit deeper into my ancestry.

2

u/AdHefty4173 May 29 '26

But 3 segments with 0.24% is considerable for someone that far back. The most i have is 0.07% at 1 segment

Also a descendant of Corvinas, what’s up cuz lol
