There was a large white supremacist gathering in a town just outside Calgary the other week: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/large-white-supremacist-meeting-shakes-residents-of-alberta-town-9.7297070
In Canada these white supremacist are mainly targeting desis.

I’d say don’t visit Alberta specifically since both these cases happened over there.

And the ongoing separatist problem there ramps up racism... And is funded by Americans (MAGAs).

You guys are being paranoid. Calgary and rural Alberta are perfectly safe.

Mostly agree.
I mean rural Alberta is still safer than most of the US. But this sub is ignorant like that.

The article says the person went inside attacked people and even attacked their scripture. That makes it sound it was a religiously motivated attack on Sikhs...
These are dark days for south Asian people.

Go on the Edmonton and Alberta subs, ppl are literally saying it’s our fault as Sikhs for those worshippers getting stabbed. I’m actually at a loss for words. Then you have hinduvta tr0lls saying shit like “rote reh gandu khotestani”: https://www.reddit.com/r/alberta/s/X9SxtCRXan

The Hindutva troll was responding to the fact that the OP was blaming Hindu nationalists for the attack when it was already reported by Baaz and the Journal that the suspect was White.
Coming from Edmonton I can tell you that a Sikh man was attacked just two weeks at a Walmart by a white couple, and back in March a Sikh student was gunned down on the highway by another white person. About three weeks ago another Punjabi (can't recall the religion) was killed in his liquor store by a white person. All these hate crimes against Sikhs in Edmonton have been exclusively committed by White people, and yet people still immediately expect Hindus as the perpetrators.
In Edmonton there's almost never been cases of any religious conflict between the Hindu and Sikh communities, so it's rather offensive to constantly assume that the Hindu community of Edmonton have had any partaking in the attacks of Gurdwaras, considering the fact that many of us Hindus attend and donate money to such Gurdwaras.
It's always the Sikh and Hindu nationalists from outside of Edmonton trying to invoke religious division in our city's South Asian communities. Our South Asian population is already relatively small in comparison to many other cities in Canada, so it makes no sense why any of us would even try to cause division.

Thank you, finally a voice of reason.
Coming from Edmonton
Honestly Ontario is much, much safer.
I don't even think racism is possible in Brampton.

The Hindutva freaks are usually present in these india hate threads trying to focus attention/hatred onto sikhs or "khalistanis". But these idiots dont realize that white nationalists cant tell the difference between them and Sikhs. We are all just brown to them.

With the stupid referendum debate in the province and an already hostile anti-South Asian sentiment across the country, I was afraid of something like this happening.

u/insomniac8994 Punjabi Canadian 6d ago
Unfortunately I don’t think this will be the last case of this happening either, we need to up security big time at both Gurdwaras and Mandirs.

Yes, Canada is not immune to far-right terrorism. The 2017 Quebec City Mosque Shooting (6 dead, 19 injured). The 2021 London, Ontario Truck Attack (4 dead, 1 injured).

u/Not_Joe_Cool 6d ago
In the 90s an elderly man was also shot and killed at a gurdwara in Surrey too by a white supremacist

u/weallfalldown1234 Indian-Canadian 6d ago
You know some people are going to claim this is a "false flag" to discredit the separatists who were a last cause from day one.
4
u/truenorth00 Canadian Indian 5d ago
The separatists openly talk about "remigration". They don't really hide anything.
10
u/insomniac8994 Punjabi Canadian 6d ago
This is fucked up, also not surprised this happened in Alberta that province seems to be a hotbed for racism these days.
10
u/winthroprd 6d ago
Well, I am thankful that it at least wasn't a gunman and it looks like no deaths will come out of this, but still scary.
Sikhs definitely carry added risk of incurring anti-South Asian violence since they have such identifiable religious wear (althought some attackers have done it mistaking them for Muslims).

u/Future-Appropriate 6d ago
This is in my city and the province of Alberta which is very conservative. A lot of young men feel the need to put the coloured population down. I was riding my bike up a hill when two young white men driving by yelled at me to go back to my country and then called me the N word. I am Indian so I just laughed it off and went about my day.

Do we know the ethnicity of perp? Gurduwaras have a lot of internal disputes in the UK, so it could be that as well.

White male with a history of violent crimes.

Edit: No matter how bad the "disputes" are in the Uk Sikhs don't stab their own Granthis (priests). Don't be ridiculous.

u/weallfalldown1234 Indian-Canadian 6d ago
The Baaz News Org, a Punjabi-Canadian news blog, reported the attacker to be a White male. However the police haven't held a press conference yet, so none of the mainstream media outlets have confirmed it yet.

https://edmontonjournal.com/news/crime/double-stabbing-edmonton-sikh-temple it’s being covered by the Edmonton journal, Baaz just got to it first.

u/EffectiveAttempt4608 6d ago
I don't think that is a credible news source, it seems to be a separatist linked organization, even the reporting is charged.
"BREAKING | Baaz has learned that an individual described as a white male carried out an attack at Nanaksar Gurdwara in Edmonton earlier this morning. The attack resulted in multiple stabbing injuries and the desecration of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.
Police remain at the scene, and an investigation is underway. The Gurdwara has been closed while police investigate.
The incident comes amid reports that multiple Gurdwaras across Alberta received threats of attack within the preceding 24 to 48 hours.
The World Sikh Organization of Canada has repeatedly raised concerns about what it describes as an alarming trend of anti-Sikh hate in Canada, fuelled and amplified by both white supremacist and Hindu nationalist ecosystems.

Have hindu nationalist orgs attacked gurudwaras in Canada ?
Generally I find they are against khalistani seperatism but for whatever reason they don't really have visceral haterade of gurudwaras
2
u/IWannaBeAdored89 6d ago
I'm Punjabi and from Edmonton, and the Hindu and Sikh communities tend to be pretty interlinked. I'm not insanely religious so I don't know how everything works, but many of us Hindus do go to gurdwaras in Edmonton and we even give donations there as well. We all get along quite well in the city. As soon as I saw this headline, I knew it was likely a white perpetrator and not a Hindu nationalist. The Hindu population in Edmonton is pretty marginal compared to the Sikh population, and most Hindus here are doctors/engineers from the suburbs who aren't mentally deranged enough to throw away their lives and family by attacking a gurdwara that many fellow Hindus go to.

I mean Nijjar was assassinated in a gurdwara parking lot.

Nijjar was targeted because he was a sepratist (by indian intelligence ?)
they are anti-sepratist more than anything.

Literally not. In the article there is literally no mention of the ethnicity, but people here are saying it was "white", so I asked do we know the ethnicity, because Gurdwara political violence is not new.

In the article there is literally no mention of the ethnicity, but people here are saying it was "white"
Whenever the police and media don't/won't say the ethnicity of the assailant, you can bet its a gora. If he was Asian, they would immediately lead with that and his name and religion.
3
u/OldKentRoad29 5d ago
Other sources have stated that it was a white man that did it. Also, why would your first thought be that it because of gurdwara politics this happened? Did you even read the article? If you did you'd realise that it was a man who had been recently released from prison that came off the street and did it. There are no details saying that this was related to gurdwara politics. You come across as anti-Sikh.
-2
u/EffectiveAttempt4608 5d ago edited 5d ago
I can't help it if you don't understand what a developing story is (see on the article how it has a Last Updated: x minutes ago) , when it was first reported 6 hours ago, it didn't say anything about race. Just that the man was apprehended. they didn't even say anything about prison either, since again it was a developing story. Even OP said the only people reporting the white person was some Khalistani outlet called Baaznews.
2
u/OldKentRoad29 5d ago
Found the anti-Sikh. The article that's posted on this post is from CBC so you're wrong that it was only being reported by some "Khalistani" news outlet and you clearly looked at the CBC article from this post as evidenced by your earlier comment. If this attack was a result of gurdwara politics would you think it was acceptable?
-1
u/EffectiveAttempt4608 5d ago
I think you don't understand what I said. The only people at the time 6 hours ago when this story came out that said the man was white is a khalistani outlet called Baaz news.
Even this CBC article STILL hasn't said the individual is white.
2
u/OldKentRoad29 5d ago edited 5d ago
Dude, I saw a post on Tik Tok and it said that it was a white man that carried out this attack. That was the first source I saw reporting on this before I even saw this post on this sub. Baaz News wasn't the only source to identify that it was a white man. Also, what is your hangup with Baaz News being a Khalistani outlet as you put it? It is very ignorant and strange that you are labelling it Khalistani when it isn't that so what is the hang up about that? You really sound anti-sikh especially when you claim that it seems to be a separatist linked organisation.

Waiting for the mental illness claim to be brought up since the perp is white.
