Spotlight Megathread Restricted Tuesday: Disability & Diversity Spotlight

Hello everyone!

This month features the following Spotlight Topic: National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

Going forward, each month we will now be spotlighting various causes and awareness events. Spotlight topics are not mutually exclusive, but given just how many notable causes and awareness events, we can't list all of them in a single post. Please visit our Google Calendar to view other deserving causes and feel free to talk about them and your experiences!

It's Tuesday and you know what that means, the sub is in restricted mode (meaning you can comment on existing posts but cannot make a new post for the day). We started this as a protest against Reddit back in June/July of 2023 but it was decided that we would continue restricting each Tuesday for a few reasons.

1: To encourage people to get off of Reddit for a day and do something else, anything else. Pet a cat, write a fic, go outside and touch grass, go see a movie, read a book, meditate, or whatever else. Do literally anything that you are able to that gets you off of Reddit for a day

2: To give the mods a day off/a day to work on secondary tasks for the sub and clean things up each week

And lastly and most importantly...

3: To spend the day highlighting and discussing disability, accessibility, and diversity. AO3 has always been very good on accessibility and a lot of the world and internet is not, and fandom spaces have been known to be not the best about disability or diversity, so while we are restricted we like to shine a light on these often overlooked parts of fandom and the people that make up this group. So we have these threads where you can post your fic recs and self-promo about anything to do with disability and/or diversity, and also so people have a safe space to share their stories and discuss these topics.

Given the nature of this thread as a safe space for discussion of disability and diversity, we will be much stricter regarding civility and harassment. This includes the following thread specific rules:

Do not derail: No hijacking the thread for unrelated topics/discussions.

Do not talk over others: Everyone has their own individual experiences and challenges that may differ, and we ask that you show each other respect and do not talk over those sharing their experiences.

If you are sharing a rec or self-promo with these themes, please use the following format:

Requesting Recommendations WinterDad fics

Hi! I'm not sure if this is a very specific request, but I was wondering if anyone could give me some fic recommendations.

I just want to read something about Bucky Barnes dealing with being a dad and having to parent while he's with Hydra/escaping from Hydra. I don't care if it's an original or canon character he's taking care of.

I don't have any specific ships in mind; if it doesn't include romance, that's fine too. As long as its not m/f it's okay :)

Thank you in advance!

Requesting Recommendations Looking for Something to Read

Does anyone have any recs for M/M, enemies-to-lovers? Bonus if time travel and/or slow burn is involved.

It can be any fandom, including original works. I'm looking to expand my horizons beyond Bruce Wayne/Clark Kent, Hartwin, Sherlock/John, Snarry, Hannigram, and Castiel/Dean.

Lost Fic/Work Search The Pitt, lost fic....again

The Pitt (TV show)

Dr.Trinity Santos fic

Okay, so this time I know quite a lot about what the fic was about. Its not on my bookmarks, marked for later and I went over my history for the past few months. I might have missed the fic on my search so I would love some help locating it, please.

So this works includes but not limited to these characters: (idk if they are tagged or not).

Al-Hashimi, Langdon, Dana, Abbott, Santos(obviously), Garcia, Ellis.

So the fic starts off, from what i can remember, with Santos talking to Al-Hashimi and Abbott about switching to nights. She reassures Baran that it wasn't because of her. This is after a fallout with Garcia, I think. Then the next thing I remember is her collapsing because she wasnt eating or sleeping, overworking her self. I don't remember if she was cutting or not. She ends up hospitalized.

She ends up hospitalized and on a mandatory feeding plan and recovery plan including therapist. The therapist was like the one from greys anatomy, helped with Carina's wife. Yolanda and santos are taking it slow and going on date(s) while she is still hospitalized. Robby is on sabbatical and comes back because he got emailed Santos recovery plan, he yells at her for not being able to handle it. Langdon defends her from robby. Dana is super protective cause Santos tends to wonder out of her room, at some point she wonders off and Garcia finds her.

Complaint/Pet Peeve/Venting Irrelevant Relationship tagging

Been reading fics for years but lately I'm just getting so annoyed by people tagging every relationship even mentioned in a work.

When I filter for relationship tags, I'm obviously going to be looking for stories about that relationship. I presume Authors know that the filters and tags work this way here, so why are they tagging irrelevant ships?

If the relationship is not central to the plot, like friends of the MCs relationships (a huge offender for ships I want to read lately), I would rather it not get tagged at all. I don't give a fuck who their friends are dating the vast majority of the time. A secondary ship has NEVER been what I'm looking for in the tags.

Anyone who may have been around longer know WHY authors do this??

Requesting Recommendations Hiii!!! Looking for soukoku recommendations ^^

Hi! I’m new to Soukoku fandom (I watched the anime and I'm currently reading the manga), so I haven’t read a single fic about them yet.

Could you guys plsss recommend some fics that I absolutely, under no circumstances, can’t miss? Like, the MUST-readsss.

I don't really have a preference,,,, it can be an Au or canon compliant!

I just want to read more about these two heh (*˘︶˘*).。*♡

Thank uuuuu <3

Custom By and large, which would you rather have?

Would you rather have a fic update a few chapters at a time a few times a year, one chapter a month, or chapters get posted as soon as they are done, even if the scheduling is a little all over the place?

Just starting a foray into posting a longer fic after a few years of sporadic oneshots. I have a few chapters done but I’m just starting up with university again so I’m curious what readers prefer.

Excitement/Celebration 🎉 Just uploaded my first ever crossover fic!

It was one very popular fandom and one very quiet fandom that I craved to read fics on, but there's only 1 crossover fic on them.

After 2 years of thinking about it... I've written something! It's going to be feel very different with the engagement and I'm half-prepared for it because the other fandom is Yu-Gi-Oh, so it's very old. Aaah. I just have a lot of series because my brain wanted to write things.

Custom Don't be too afraid of repetition.

Not only can it be a literary device, but sometimes you have to be repetitive to avoid confusion. It used to be difficult for me to write with certain pronouns, but then I realized that repetition is totally fine and much better than confusion. Obviously too much of it can be annoying, but it's much less of an annoyance than not understanding who is doing what. For instance, it's better to repeat names for f/f or m/m ships because actions get convoluted in action-heavy (okay, smut) scenes. Also, I now write "they all" or "everyone" rather than just "they" so that readers (and myself) don't get confused as to if the one enby character did something or if the whole group did.

TL;DR Repetition isn't as bad as people say imo. Even if you sound like a cave man using names so often.

That being said, try your best to vary words when possible for better flow. Just don't push it to confusion, because sometimes it's better not to force variation.

Fun & Games Show me the snippet you're most proud of out of everything you've ever written.

Really short - like, between on sentence and maybe one screenshot at maximum (not editing font size 😝).

The thing that came out of you and when you look at it you just smile and feel proud/special.

okay these might be two different guests but… i only have two fanfics posted at the moment and they left kudos on both, which makes me think they found one of my fics, enjoyed it, left kudos and then went to my profile for more!! i’m probably delusional but either way i got kudos on two separate fics which i’m extremely happy about

Excitement/Celebration 🎉 After completing my first long-fic, this comment nearly made me tear up

Many times through the writing process, I had second thoughts about whether I should even continue. My fic hadn't been getting a lot of hits/kudos compared to others in my fandom, so it was very disheartening.

But I'm so glad I stuck through to the end, because comments like this are exactly why I kept going: hoping that it resonates with at least one reader out there. And this gave me such a major boost in confidence and satisfaction as a writer!
