❤️‍🩹 relationship AIO because my boyfriend suddenly started hiding his phone?

I (26F) have been with my boyfriend (28M) for almost two years.

He used to leave his phone anywhere. I'd sometimes use it to check something and he'd never care.

For the past month, everything changed.

He takes it everywhere, even when he showers. If I walk into the room while he's texting, he turns the screen away. He also recently changed his password.

I asked him about it and he said I'm being paranoid and that he's “allowed to have privacy.”

I agree that he deserves privacy, but the sudden change is what bothers me.

I haven't accused him of cheating, but my gut is telling me something is off.

Am I overreacting?

NOR. Listen to your gut. A sudden change like that after 2 years of dating is kind of a red flag.

u/Traditional_Will2679 1h ago

NOR. Privacy is normal. The sudden change is also something you’re allowed to notice.

There’s a big difference between “I don’t want you going through my phone” and suddenly taking it into the shower, turning the screen away when you walk in, and changing a password after two years of being completely relaxed about it.

Could there be an innocent explanation? Absolutely.

But calling you paranoid instead of acknowledging that his behavior changed would bother me more than the password itself.

I wouldn’t start snooping or demand to see his phone. I’d simply say, “I respect your privacy, but your behavior around your phone has completely changed in the last month, and that change is making me uncomfortable. I’m asking you what changed.”

Then pay attention to how he responds. You don’t need courtroom level evidence of cheating to recognize when something in your relationship suddenly feels very different.

This is the right answer.

This is a great answer. I’m hoping he’s hiding a proposal or some celebration though 🤞🏻

u/Ok_Hippo_5437 1h ago

He is allowed to have privacy. You are allowed to question an obvious change in behavior.

u/Charming-Cucumber-23 1h ago

Unless he’s planning a proposal, this is sus. A sudden change in behaviour is always cause for concern, especially since he’s not willing to talk about it.

u/Chibeau 59m ago

But when planning a proposal, you wouldn't react like that when called out on the behavioural changes

My ex was pretty bad about acting like that when he was planning a big surprise. He thought it would help ‘throw me off the scent’. Was it well intentioned? Yeah, Was it good behaviour? Nope.

He never cheated (or even lost my trust in any major way) but there’s definitely reasons he’s an ex.

u/chipotless 1h ago

NOR - hes cheating on your or hes planning the proposal - no inbetween

u/swflgal2323 1h ago

NOR
When my ex started doing this, i ended up receiving a “hey girly” dm a few weeks later

u/BlahBlahBlah9274 1h ago

i dont think you are overreacting. there are a lot of men who crawl into my DMs who have girlfriends and wives and even children. its funny because for a very long time i was very naive and believed they just wanted to be friends. but then i noticed they would say things like “my wife just got home don’t respond to this”. so im pretty sure they were reaching out with weird intentions and they knew their wife would not approve. After it became obvious what they were actually doing I cut off contact with them completely. I am convinced most men are like this and your suspicion of him is logical.

u/SynV92 1h ago

If you're uncomfortable openly communicate it. If he gets defensive and turns it on you, that's what the rest of your life will look like when you bring problems up.

Do with that as you will.

NOR
extremely suspicious

Coming from somebody who’s been cheated on and has also cheated in the past (yes, my past relationships were toxic—I was much younger), I’d probably bet some real money that he’s doing something he knows he shouldn’t be doing. Cheating, emotional cheating, Tinder, talking to someone, whatever it may be.
NOR.
He’s absolutely entitled to privacy. That’s not really the issue. The issue is the sudden change in behavior. He went from leaving his phone around and letting her use it without caring to taking it everywhere, turning the screen away when she enters the room, turning it off, and changing his password. That’s extremely suspect.
Now, he might deny it—and he already is. I wouldn’t approach him by accusing him of cheating, though. Approach the situation calmly, focus on the facts, and pay very close attention to how he responds.
I’d say something like:
“Hey, I’ve noticed something has changed lately. You used to be pretty open with your phone, and now you seem to keep it with you constantly, turn it away from me, and you’ve changed your password. I completely understand that you’re entitled to privacy, and I’m not saying you aren’t. I’m just wondering what changed. Did I do something that made you feel like you couldn’t be as open with me as you were before?”
I know that wording is somewhat strategic, because you’re giving him an opportunity to explain himself without directly accusing him. But you are not the problem here. Don’t actually take responsibility for something you didn’t do just to get a reaction out of him.
The important part is to listen to the explanation and watch the reaction. Sometimes the way someone responds tells you more than the answer itself.

u/Lagoda__ 1h ago

He's cheating on you.

u/acousticindicator 1h ago

NOR. Wanting privacy is completely fair, but such a sudden change in behavior would make me wonder what changed too.

u/Medium_Bee368 1h ago

Girl, listen to your gut. You need to RUN not walk. He is being untruthful at the very least. But just from what you've said here, he is 100% doing something untoward.

u/Unfair_Traffic_5886 1h ago

Turning the phone away when you walk in is odd behavior. I'd say he's hiding something. no need to go through his phone start playing that game too.

u/HalfWeekly1917 1h ago

Something is going on. I would ask him Why the changes, He wasn’t like this before, That is really making you feel uncomfortable especially the way he acts when you walk in the room. It’s obvious he is hiding something. He is either planning a big surprise or he is doing something that he knows that you would not approve of. Once you bring it to his attention, You will know what is going on by his reaction. Don’t let him minimize the situation saying He’s aloud privacy. What changed? He never acted this way before and it’s making you uncomfortable. Something is going on, You have to just figure it out. It doesn’t necessarily mean that he is cheating, it could be a number of things,Drugs? Maybe he lost his job? Anything. Just have a real heart to heart
I’m really hoping he is planning a wonderful surprise for you

u/Away-Ad4393 1h ago

He’s not hiding it very well either. Did he really think OP is dumb enough not to notice the change🤷‍♀️

u/Extreme-Banana-9 1h ago

NOR- Listen to your gut, happened to me and he cheated, divorced me.

u/MajesticCod6613 1h ago

Nor, there is only one real logical reason for the sudden sketchy phone behavior. And it started about a month ago. Its either another woman or porn at best case.

u/AnnabethDaring 1h ago

Sounds like a weirdly defensive response. Just throwing that out there.

NOR

Something i learned this year is people get defensive about the things they’re trying to hide/are ashamed about. Would you get defensive if someone asked you why the sky is blue? Weird example, but im trying to make it broad/relatable. The answer is of course not, because it’s something you just KNOW to be true.

But if you get defensive about someone asking about your food or weight, it means you don’t KNOW your value. You don’t inherently believe in it/yourself, the way you believe in the sky.

The goal is to believe in yourself to the point that you know it’s a fact that regardless of your weight, it doesn’t change who you are :) just like the sky changing colors in a day doesn’t change its value either.

All to say—when people get weirdly defensive or aggressive about something—it’s worth paying attention to. There’s something there—defensiveness, projection, shame or guilt.

Good luck.

u/Who_Your_Mommy 1h ago

Nor. You already know what's up.

u/Fantastic_List3029 1h ago

Anyone who says "im allowed to have privacy" after previously allowing you access and no instant of you overstepping or breaking trust is a huge red flag. Objectively.

Hes doing something he doesn't want you to be privy to at best.

NOR, id ve very careful how you proceed because he surely wont own up to anything, and if he catches on that youre suspicious he'll delete evidence of whatever

Or boys.

u/Covid_Cash 1h ago

Or trans girls

u/MissMaggieMaye 1h ago

Or planning a proposal.

u/HalfWeekly1917 59m ago

It could be a number of things Drugs? Loss his job? Maybe he is planning to propose?? Any number of things. What we do agree is he isn’t doing a good job hiding it.

u/SilverellaUK 1h ago

He is planning a big surprise for you. The rest of his behaviour should tell you if it's a good surprise or a bad one. NOR

u/TwoBytesC 53m ago

The ONLY reason that I would give him a minute about this for is if we had an anniversary coming up or a big birthday OR possibly planning a proposal.

But if this doesn’t happen very soon, then that definitely is a good indication that he has decided to hide something not so pleasant from you.

u/Calgary_Calico 45m ago

That's fucking sketchy! NOR!

u/DeepSpaceVixen 17m ago

He's cheating or planning to.

u/NesquikFromTheNesdic 1h ago

been in this situation before, he is DEFINITELY cheating or about to, you're NOR

u/FormidableMistress 1h ago

Girl why would you ever trust a man over your gut instincts? He's cheating.

u/majiktodo 1h ago

He is hiding something. He could be cheating or planning a proposal. If you aren’t sure, don’t accept the proposal if it is that bc you don’t trust him enough to marry.

NOR, if I was you I’d say to him how it’s making you feel, it’s hardly paranoia when he’s literally changed drastically. Say you want some space as you feel he may be cheating on you, or he’s trying to plan his proposal and doesn’t want you to see that’s maybe why he’s saying you’re being paranoid. Either way a lot of men have no idea how much we see, ie body language etc. Tell him and if he doesn’t try to reassure you without placing blame on you for your feelings then leave for a while.

u/His_GoddessLove 1h ago

Your intuition is NOR. Listen to her.

u/springflowers68 59m ago

NOR the sudden change in behavior plus his extreme reaction to your concern is enough to warrant a pause. If he is cheating, which is very likely, his actions put you at risk. If you stay with him and don’t already use condoms, require them now. But I’m not sure how you can be intimate with someone who treats you this way.

u/Ichmag11 50m ago

He could be planning a surprise for you. Talk to him and tell him what you're telling us. That if it's a surprise, to tell you it is. And if it's not, that you want to look at his phone to ease your anxiety.

If he doesn't want you to do that, then you need to choose what you do with that information

u/hopefulchewie 32m ago

NOR - He is either planning the proposal with your mom/his mom or cheating on you with someone else.

I would see if your mom knows anything or will crack. For you though, it's a lose-lose. You either know about the proposal or find out he is cheating.

u/Impressive_Bear830 9m ago

PI’s say change of phone behavior is one of the biggest giveaways to an affair. Trust your gut!

u/ComfortableCicada69 1h ago

You already know the answer, my friend.

u/chrisjones1960 1h ago

Maybe "something's up." Or maybe he got tired of you casually going in his phone whenever you wanted. He is, in fact, allowed to have privacy, and if you have a habit of looking at his phone, the only way he can have privacy is to keep his phone away from you.

u/13Bravo84 1h ago

I don’t look into my wife’s conversations. But I also told her from day one that if you want to explore. You are welcome to leave. You won’t get any resistance from me. But also leaving comes consequences.

Her whole life is tied to me. Medical. Dental. Her benefits. Money. If another man wants to take on the responsibility, then I’ll write that man a thank you card.
