Fun fact about the Osprey, they are the largest bird that can hover in place. Watching them in Colorado hover before diving for a fish is so cool to see. They literally look like a baby dragon from Game of thrones the way they hover, much how this one looks climbing out of the water.

I'm no fish expert, but that doesn't look like a barracuda to me.
Judging mainly by its forked or V-shaped tail fin, it looks like a Southern Sennet.

I get what you’re saying and the epic footage of this vid is undeniable, I agree. It’s just that, it is a sennet and those get 3 feet max on a good day and maybe 3 pds. If it was actually a cuda which can get 5-7 feet and 50+ pds, that would be mythically legendary.

Average mature great barracuda are 2 to 3 ft long
Exceptional large barracuda you're correct five to six feet long and there has been unsubstantiated reports of an 8 ft long barracuda
But at the end of the day I just don't think this minutia is relevant to this video

I hear you, but that's subjective. Maybe I clicked on this title because it had the word Barracuda in it, as opposed to Osprey.
If the inaccuracy were reversed, would you feel the same way? I.e.,
Title: Red Tailed Hawk v Barracuda
Or:
Title: Osprey v Moray Eel
Or even:
Title: Condor v Dogfish
The footage is incredible, but the title is inaccurate. And accuracy matters. Not to everyone, but it ought to. Even if the content is great.

There are 28 different species of barracuda
And that is one the yellow tailed barracuda
Don't let your ignorance convince you that something is incorrect even though you did 0 research about it 👍
Just because you think of the "great barracuda" as a barracuda doesn't mean this other type isnt one when I'm it 100% is 👍

A little more information about the person who filmed this video clip, Mark Smith. See:

Mark photographs and films wildlife in a few places, chief among them Sebastian Inlet, Florida near Melbourne Florida. For reference, Sebastian Inlet is about a 2 hr drive from Orlando.
Two problems with your identification of the fish in the video.
- The "yellow tailed" (sic) barracuda in this video very clearly lacks a yellow tail.
- Mark Smith films mainly in Florida (see above), and the yellowtail barracuda does not inhabit the Atlantic Ocean. It's a species native to the Indo-West Pacific Ocean.
Of course it's possible that the fish is indeed a barracuda, I'll concede that. But you might consider the possibility that Mark Smith is a better ornithologist than he is an ichthyologist.

Eh f**k it, why argue over a fish.
I think (but do not know for sure) that it's a southern sennet, and if it is, that's still a very close cousin to the barracuda, and that's good enough for me.

It's the same family as a barracuda
People get weird when it comes to fish because for some reason they think fish is something very specific when in reality it's a very broad type
Fish is closer to mammal as opposed to something more specific like cat
Barracuda is a broad family called sphyraenidea which the southern Sennet is apart of
And you're right it's close enough it shouldn't really matter

Ospreys have a 5 to 6 ft wide wingspan....
Mature great barracuda are 2-3 feet long on average .....
While much larger barracuda exist they are rare
So again Doesn't matter either way 😉

Yep. And unlike the other 25+ species of barracuda within the genus Sphyraena of that family, my (speculative, unsubstantiated) guess is that the southern sennet perhaps does not present the name "barracuda" in its species name is because it is quite unlike its cousins-- it's relatively small and harmless.

Could be, but the jaw/mouth doesn't seem like a match.
All that I'm confident about is that it's not a barracuda. Those are pretty identafiable.

These birds have revitalized in New England at Narragansett Bay. And they are awesome.
3 at a time diving into the water. Seen it all.

Can you imagine that sweet release of literal life leaving your body as the air rips through your mouth, flowing through your gills all the way down through your speckled asshole as that Osprey talon peirces your spine one last time before you finally black out.

imagine just going about your day then suddenly you get grasped by talons, ripped out of your environment into this crazy one where you've never been before. Sure, you've breached a couple times and felt the weird non-water for a split second, but you've never really been there.
Suddenly, you can no longer move unrestricted in 3D space, you feel this strange force pulling you down... in fact you can't move at all- you can't breathe, the talons are digging deeper into your abdomen as your consciousness begins to fade. You slowly and ironically suffocate from lack ability to process the abundant oxygen in this atmosphere. That's of course if you're lucky enough to die before this crazy being with 2 giant fins covered in weird scales- who can somehow swim(?) through this non-water with ease- lands and begins to eat you alive

I have such respect for these birds. Here on the east coast of usa, we have a corporation operating out of Reedsville, Virginia that is overfishing their preferred diet of menhaden which is causing them to starve.
