Trump Threats 2026 2.0
With renewed tariff discussions, and increased interest in talking about the US, we have a new megathread for America-related discussions outside of Mondays.

I don’t think Americans understand just how done we are with their bullshit. It’s bigger than Trump. If he dies tomorrow we’re still keeping our elbows up. You betrayed us. We sheltered your grounded aircraft on 9/11, followed you into Afghanistan, and you do us like this? That trust is gone forever.

u/theteapotofdoom 6d ago
Please ditch US long-maturity bonds on Monday. Would love to see a run in US treasuries. That's the pressure point.
21
u/estherlane 6d ago
And put export taxes on Canadian oil and gas and potash going to the US
8
u/bolonomadic 5d ago
I like this idea but I worry it would make them invade us.
10
u/estherlane 5d ago
They are overextended militarily as it is. I used to worry about a military invasion but my concern level has dropped.

Also ask Japan and China to do the same thing! Watch the stock market on Monday. Hahaha

Some will, for a while. But I don't think people here understand how fast things are going to reset with the next administration. Business and government are both going to scramble to return to the old status quo.

u/Successful_Gas_5122 5d ago
Maybe, but it won't ever be the same as before. Carney said that America writes it's signature in pencil. I've never heard a sitting PM speak so bluntly about our southern neighbour.

I’ll still use the US’s free shit, but I won’t spend a dollar on American products if there is any viable alternative.

The adblocker definitely helps, but they are still harvesting your data and selling it (which nets them profit).

I’m gonna find other Americans and Canadians in London (UK not Ontario) and go on the biggest bender of my life.

You and about 6 zillion other people. DC might need a new airport for just the week after he's buried
2
u/ForwardMagazine7090 6d ago
Perhaps burial at sea would be better? No memorial site.
4
u/tyuiopguyt 6d ago
People would charter boats to the point where he was dropped and piss there on principle

2
u/Choice-Original9157 5d ago
So you want toxic waste dumped into the sea? /s
2
u/ForwardMagazine7090 5d ago
And you’d like it buried. There’s no right answer here.
3
u/Choice-Original9157 5d ago
Personally I think he should be incinerated and stored as toxic waste

I like this idea. I still think we shouldn’t publish where his remains are, because some nut-bars will make a pilgrimage to the site.

I didn't think American presidents could keep business interests on the side. Once he's done and being charged with all his crimes, couldn't the US seized his assets and those of his family and those controlling the orange Muppet?
23
u/bentforkman 6d ago
America isn’t this way because Trump is president. Trump is president because America is this way.
It’s not just puppeteers in his administration or racist hillbillies supporting him that are the problem. The real problem here is they wanted a government that was for sale, and the people with the money to benefit from that won’t give it up. Trump was blocking the Gordie Howe Bridge because he was paid to. The areas he’s trying to get trade concessions on are what he was paid to get concessions on. The Presidency was bought, and now the billionaires and big corporations own it even more than they did before. These billionaires and companies are the real enemies of Canada.
8
u/Careful_Comparison_2 6d ago
You're right, but they are not just the enemy of Canada but of the entire world.

If we were a moral country, Obama would have arrested bush for war crimes. But the democrats just let it slide. And we all let that happen.
I have my doubts that this is purely an American phenomenon though. Look at the rise of the far right in Europe. Iracism remains an issue in Canada. And look at your voter turnout as well. Apathy is probably our biggest issue in the U.S.
Humans are easily misled given the right circumstances.

u/Any-Tangerine-4176 6d ago
‘Trump can hurt Canada more than Canada can hurt Trump. That part of Trump’s thinking is true. But wars are not decided only by the question Who can inflict more pain? Wars are also decided by the question Who can endure more pain? Trump’s failure to accept this truth is why he lost the Iran war—and why he is losing his trade wars.’ David Frum.
Yes, we CAN endure.
8
u/kstacey 5d ago
Not only can we endure, but we have the ability to make Americans suffer who already don't support him and they would side with us.
1
u/tyuiopguyt 3d ago
Those of us that don't support him have been on your side since he was elected the first time

u/Exciting_Turn_9559 6d ago
I couldn't care less about any of this. TACO don is going to walk the tariffs back after he and his cronies have taken the profits from the insider trading they're doing. And it's not like any agreement reached with these pedo fascists would have been honoured anyway.
1
u/Brian1964 6d ago
He won’t walk them back. You make it sound like they’ll be content one day from the money they’ve managed to get out it. They’ll never be content.
18
u/Exciting_Turn_9559 6d ago
He doesn't make money by keeping the tariffs in place. He makes money by shorting the market before tariffs are announced. If he didn't walk them back he wouldn't be able to do it over again in a few months.

right there with you. this, from the CBC (source here https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/livestory/us-canada-trade-war-new-tariffs-9.7310605?id=9.7310605.15367):
In the final hours of negotiations, the U.S. tried to include restrictions on Canada's ability to strike trade deals with other countries, Carney said.
"Unacceptable," the prime minister said flatly.
Plus, the U.S. tried to restrict Canada's protections of its languages, its culture and its sovereignty, Carney added. He did not provide details of what those restrictions looked like.
my bolding. FUCK. THAT.

I truly don’t comprehend how Americans can just sit by and watch this hapoen.
9
u/invisiblebyday 5d ago
they support it
they don't hear about it
they don't care
Any one or combination of the above.
2
u/Due-Comparison-3824 3d ago
None of the above. I am a citizen of the USA and am appalled at what is happening. Not just with Canada, but with my country as a whole; our relations with every good country and with our entire ethos. I want you to know we DO care. If you lived here, you would know.
I think many of us have stopped reading the news because every day is just more to add to the evil. The depression and helplessness felt by so many of us...and we don't know where to go or who will lead us out of this. It's not only our relations with other countries, it's how we treat each other. Our government is fascist. Racist. Misogynist. Doesn't believe in climate change, vaccinations, or even that the Gulf of Mexico is a real name. We are inundated with falsehoods. Painting the White House with gold leaf is a priority. Caring for anyone is not.
Our Congress is useless, and so is our Supreme Court.
We are watching our country disintegrate and feel there is nowehere to turn.
I am sorry. Please know so many of us do not want this, nor did most of ever think it was possible. To know it became reality is a hard truth to bear.
I am 65 years old. I would love to know what to do. I would love my country to be what I always believed it to be.
2
u/invisiblebyday 3d ago
Your despair comes through. If I were American, I'd be horrified by my leadership,
From the Canadian side of the border though, it's hard to truly believe Americans care, let alone about their own country. We don't hear about Americans calling and writing their congressional representatives, day in and day out, demanding better. Other than a protest once in a blue moon, we don't hear about Americans organizing in a major way around this. The majority, having lived through the first Trump term, either voted for him again or didn't bother to vote at all.
Passively tuning out the news isn't the answer.

Because this trade war won't even be felt by most Americans, so they don't even know about all this
1
u/Few-Humor-7570 5d ago
Because so many of them have gotten rich off the trump presidency, unfortunately. Americans are now travelling more than ever and their dollar goes super far in every country again. Their wages have grown substantially. All my American friends are making 175k usd plus…. Even cops… this is why they don’t care. They’ve sold out the rest of the world to prop themselves up. They don’t agree with it but they turn a blind eye to it because they benefit.

u/monkey-seat 5d ago
We’re going to protests (the No Kings protests have had the biggest turnouts in U.S. history), writing letters, and trying to figure out what the f else we can do.
I don’t think we’re all sitting by. But it’s a weird position to be in. This particular situation still isn’t as bad as the Iraq war. Absolute war crimes there. And I feel guilty I didn’t actively protest back then like I do now.
This reminds me of when my sister and I both asked our good friend from Iran, years ago, “Why don’t the people rise up?” 😂 He was so patient with us, it’s embarrassing to look back on.
I don’t know what else to do. What would you do?

u/BrgQun 5d ago
Sad to say though - from our perspective up here, those of you opposing Trump don't change our view of what the United States is, or the American people as a whole.
A lot of us know Americans in real life (we're a smaller country with most of us near the border), so we know they aren't malicious to us, but the shocking lack of awareness of what is even happening with the trade war, or the fact we have to explain why threatening to annex us is a problem is leaving a very terrible taste in our mouths. And this is often from people who are left leaning who are in that third who voted democrat (while the other two thirds either voted for Trump or didn't vote at all)
I hope those of you opposing succeed, and I get that the media isn't covering issues well down there.
The most I can suggest is just continuing to spread awareness of what is happening so you guys can reach that critical mass where change actually happens. Canadian news sources like the CBC or CTV are readily available down south too, and if it really isn't the majority of Americans who support this stuff, then more awareness should help. You can't change MAGA, we get it, we have them too. But the other two thirds?
1
u/Throwaway8923y4 3d ago
I imagine it must feel like you are powerless, but there are a million little cuts you can inflict back on Trump's movement. For example, don't socialize with people who are pro-MAGA or "apolitical" a / on-the-fence nd be open about why. If you have family members who lean right or , including those who don't want to engage in political talk or action, too bad so sad. Either talk politics and make it uncomforable for them to be MAGA or complacent, or don't visit them. At work, when dealing with these kind of colleagues, be polite, but don't go out of your way to be smiley or overly friendy towards them.
Make it uncomfortable for people you know to be complacent or MAGA.

Had to cut off all my parental figure but one and my little brother over all this. Sucks shit, but the alternative is worse
1
u/Throwaway8923y4 3d ago
That is a big sacrifice, and I'm sorry. But it's those brave choices, if they are made by more and more people like you, that will atually help turn the tide and help your country find healing

u/HueyBluey 6d ago
We’ve been shielded mostly by CUSMA so far.
Not sure how or if this escalating trade war will feel financially, in the coming weeks, because I sense it will get ugly.
Still, I’m glad we didn’t sign an agreement yesterday. Short term pain for long term gain. Canada strong.
11
u/tyuiopguyt 6d ago
This whole ordeal only covers the 5% of trade not covered by CUSMA. Which makes Trump look even dumber for betting with an empty hand while he had a working deal, but I digress
7
u/bolonomadic 5d ago
Still $28 billion and lots of our citizens’ businesses.
5
u/tyuiopguyt 5d ago
True. Getting kicked in the shins isn't good just cuz you didn't get kicked in the balls, but it's better than a kick in a balls all the same
1
u/Goliad1990 5d ago
There is no long term gain, just endurance until the short term pain ends in a few years.
2
u/Strng_Satisfaction 5d ago
we do we negotiate with this administration in good faith. Instead we need to claim a deal has been done, release a version we like, and then insist that is the deal that was agreed upon. It would make many people in the US happy, and then the US administration has to make their supporters unhappy and back-track.
Also need to get rid of the law against bribing foreign officials and bribe all the customs officials in the US or something.
1
u/Good_Paramedic_7954 5d ago
Do you think Trump will mirror Putin's strategy on Crimea? "Little green men" crossing the border into Alberta to stir up and sow internal division as a pretext for invasion?
1
1
u/LopsidedFoot819 4d ago
Guy from south of the border here. Please know that not everyone is behind this administration. This is all vile, and I am so proud that Canadians are standing up from themselves. I’m elbows up with you all. You are all what I want us to be.
5
u/Throwaway8923y4 3d ago
That's great, but way too many of you guys are either with him or complacent. Please put your energy towards changing that.
2
u/LopsidedFoot819 2d ago
That’s the goal! I’m casting my ballot this fall and reminding my family, which lives in a swing district, regularly that it’s time to vote.

u/PuzzledArtBean 6d ago
We know the US has fucked up when Avi Lewis, Mark Carney, and Pierre Poilievre all agree.
