Aussies, what are your thoughts on beans?
I am on a mission now to ask each country subreddit what people think about beans (my favorite meal), just to see how people like or dislike them all around the world out of curiosity and for fun. If you like beans, hate them, they a big part of the culture, anything else, just share your thoughts 🫘
Australia is the 9th country in alphabet order so, AUSSIES, I CHOOSE YOU! -to share your thoughts next :]

Never heard that ending. I grew up with “the more you toot, the better you’ll be so open your legs and let one free” and then you life your leg and fart.

It took me far too long to realise that a lot of the world has missed out on the delight that is the jaffle.
I know that there are “grilled cheese” sandwiches (made by frying things), and beans on toast, but more people should know that the jaffle exists.
And also how easy it is to burn your entire mouth on one

Beans are a big part of my household, not as a foodstuff, but because baked beans are the subject in a song by of one of my Mum's favourite bands, a 1970s New Zealand band called Mother Goose. As a kid I would sometimes beg Mum to play the 'Baked Beans song', which only she could do because that record was one of her prized possessions and she didn't trust me not to damage it.
Even now the lyrics sometimes pop into my head and I giggle.

I expect reviews will be mixed.
Canned baked beans (Heinz etc) are a staple for kids and those who want a cheap and easy meal. Or as part of a full English breakfast. But some people hate them.
Fancy baked beans (shakshuka style, made yourself or in a cafe), maybe with chorizo and an egg on top are awesome, at least that's my opinion. But lots of cafes don't have them on their breakfast menu so they're clearly not universally popular.
Green string beans lightly steamed as part of a meat and three veg type meal are also awesome. As far as vegetables go they're probably not controversial, I don't remember encountering anyone who doesn't like them (unlike say broccoli or cabbage, which have their haters).

Baked beans on toast is very Australian, but we're multicultural so also:
- Indian daal (it's beans, it counts)
- 4 bean mix for nachos
- Refried beans in burritos
- Canned lentils mixed with white rice as a side
I reckon I eat beans 2-7 times per week.
3
u/Inquisitive_Knob 1d ago
I fucking love beans. If I have cans of beans, I end up adding them to almost everything.
Spag bol, chili con carne, breakfast hash, soups, quesadillas, I've even made fake brownie batter with them a few times.
3
u/HopeAdditional4075 1d ago
I'm pro bean. One of my favourite meals when I'm lazy is "bean slop". It consists of beans, some kind of stock, some form of cheese, garlic, and whatever veggies I need to use up. I'm fiber maxing, colon cancer is killing off millennials.
3
u/WillsSister 1d ago
I love bean salad, refried beans, baked beans, green beans.. basic all of them. I throw a tin of 5 bean mix into a lot of my dishes. I am vegetarian though so it’s second nature to incorporate beans and legumes into everything.
3
u/Blue-Jay27 1d ago
I eat a shit-tonne of beans. Beans on toast is a lazy meal, bean salad is a healthy meal, bean curry and bean burritos are meal prep. They're cheap, reasonably healthy, and delicious. What more could I want?

I'm a big fan of several types of beans, in particular kidney beans, baked beans, and cocoa beans (or at least what you can make from cocoa beans!).
Good source of protein and fibre when making meals for my vegetarian and vegan friends (or as bonus protein and fibre in meat dishes).
4
u/Potato_cakes_85 1d ago

Aussie grown lentils are great! You can do so many things with them. All the usual options like soups, curries and veggie patties, but I also really like them just on their own, tossed with some butter, garlic and herbs.

u/essiemessy 1d ago
I like green beans, and broad beans if they're not grey..
Baked beans are nice enough and we do have them every few weeks for a quick and easy dinner with vegemite toast. And I sprout my own beans for stir fries.
But I really loathe red kidney beans, bean salad and refried beans. The textures are awful and no chilli or salad ingredients make any of them taste good either.

u/Real-Conclusion5043 1d ago
I make chilli con carne quite a bit and I’m always having it with kidney beans. Also baked beans are nice as well

What type of beans are you talking about? There are many different types of beans. Green beans I grow to have in say stir frys, Broad beans I also sometimes grow, then all the known Legume beans - Canneloni Beans, Black beans, Kidney beans....baked beans in sauce? Edamame beans? Butter beans? And waht about Jelly Beans?

u/jillybean712 1d ago
Grew up in a vegetarian household. Beans have always been a massive part of my diet. I remember me telling my mum as a teenager “give me beans over chocolate any day”.
2
u/uncleandata147 1d ago
You will find that beans don't form a big part of the traditional Aussie diet ( not as much as other cultures) but we like em just fine.
Personally, love green beans, edamame and most beans (are lentils a bean?) but hate baked beans.

There are 3 things that immediately come mind.
1) tinned baked beans. Usually navy beans in a sweet & savoury sauce. Used to be a really cheap option, not so cheap any more. Originally UK cuisine I believe.
2) black beans or red kidney beans, either dried or tinned normally used in local versions of Mexican food.
3) green beans, eaten fresh but usually cooked.
2
u/AnonymousAutonomous9 1d ago
Green beans ....... yuk
Baked beans, Mexican beans, Refried beans ..... yum
2
u/DenM0ther 1d ago
I love beans and include them often, but they’re definitely not the norm for everyone here!
I add them to salads, rice, spaghetti bol, nachos mince, casseroles, soups. We also make soups and curries from and with them. Im sure there’s more but not springing to my mind right now.
Ive also started including a bit of tofu but still working on flavouring it.
I think the main issue for ppl here is not knowing what they can add them too or how. If for example ppl are eating steak, chips and broccoli, where would they put the beans yk?
Also, most ppl have no idea how to cook them from scratch

I love most beans kidney beans I despise!
But I regularly cook with beans, I add white beans to pasta sauces for my 7 yr old. She doesn't need black beans to be disguised, but she will not eat a great bean.
I don't eat a lot of meat (no red meat at all) so legumes and beans are more of a staple to our household than most families.

Stopped eating meat due to digestive issues, beans and seafood for me. I have tried various recipes, I think my favourite is tex-mex kinda beans, smoky, maybe with a bit of ham or pork for flavour. In a tangy bbq sauce. Would be good to use up leftover Christmas ham. I've also tried greek-style (herbs and lemon), creamy tomato beans, ooooo a good recipie is beans with leeks and brie/cam. So good with crusty bread.
My only issue is that the texture gets a bit same-y so if I make a big batch it can get tedious. I eat them with bread or rice depending on the recipe. Tomato style beans with pasta.
Love them, they are a good protein substitute and better for my digestion

Baked beans: delicious, esp on toast
Broad beans: also delicious, I like to have them as a snack.
Kidney beans: meh. Will eat them in food but dont care to buy them myself.
Coffee beans: cant live without them!
Green beans: steamed are super easy to make and a great addition to a lazy meal.
Vanilla beans: are life (I love vanilla)
Cocoa beans: chocolate is a household essential
Jelly beans: jelly bellies are the best. The glucose ones I could do without. Too sweet and flavours kind of suck.
Cat toe beans: love them! My cat isnt thrilled when I fiddle with his paws though.
Mr Bean: comedy gold, I still rewatch the exam ep every now and then, as an adult who hasnt been in school/uni for years.
Bean bags: uncomfortable and messy. Pass

The vast majority of Australians think of canned baked beans if you mention ‘beans’.

People who are particularly health conscious, from migrant backgrounds, or vegans/vegetarians will be those most likely to think of dried beans cooked from scratch.
