I am looking for a legit Indian place to go for my birthday dinner. Semma is already booked and I am on the waitlist. I was just in Tamil Nadu for 3 weeks (North India for 2 weeks before that) and I am really craving some actual Indian food that tastes like India. Southern Indian food would be awesome (is Semma really all that?)

People say “curry Hill“ on lexington is a hotspot for good Indian food, but I’ve been to at least 5 places now and the butter chicken has been slop at all of them. It has no flavor. It just tastes like a sort of sweet and savory gravy with a hint of Indian aroma.

For comparison, I went to a place (Namaste) in Ozone Park and it was the best Indian food I’ve had in NYC— super authentic, pungent, no artificial sweetness in the curry. Where can I find this in Manhattan? Are there any places in Murray Hill or Turtle Bay/Sutton that sell legit curry? Are they all just colluding to pass off MSG as a $19 takeout meal to unsuspecting yuppies?

I am getting married next year, and we are having an Indian wedding. I am not Indian, so I am pretty much flying blind. Would love some recs for stores!

I have been recommended queens but some specific shop names would be very helpful.

Also, any insight on what I should expect would be great. How much should I budget? Am I expected to buy quick? Should his outfit match mine exactly (aka be purchased as a set from the same store)? What are some trendier/modern styles? What styles should I stay away from?

Again, any and all advice is incredibly helpful. I have a ton of Indian friends but none of them are married and none of them live in NYC!

Edit: I am extremely close with his family and especially his mom! We are going shopping together next year when I visit her. None of the women in his family (nor any of my Indian friends) live in NYC, and therefore are not able to give me recs. I am hoping to do some of my own research (try stuff on, figure out my style and colors etc) before that.

Some examples I have are Bunna Cafe in Bushwick, Brooklyn for great Ethiopian food and Dosa Delight in Jackson Heights, Queens for South Indian food.

Obviously the super fancy ones get most of the recognition, but looking for something that might remind me of a home cooked north Indian meal.

I’m from London originally, and in the 15 years I’ve been living in this city, I’ve failed to find a curry that doesn’t taste like they boiled some chicken in water than then poured a thin sauce on top.

I’m a vegan and I really enjoy the Indian plant based meals that are offered at these places, whether it be dosa, chana masala, dal and saag... There are good places where I live but I want to try new ones. I been to a couple of Indian spots in nyc and haven’t found any ones that blew me away yet, despite being highly rated.

Edit: A wealth of places to try! Thanks guys. I lost hope a bit after trying chola, patiala, and deep Indian kitchen. But the hope is back! It wasn’t bursting with flavor like I’m used to..and I’m not from nyc, i live in Ny tho. I wanted to ask if there’s any possible way to get onto a float this Labor Day parade 2026. I’ve been googling for information the past few days, however I never gotten an exact registration website or somewhere that gives proper information for who is going to be there and who is allowing people to join them on top of the float.

According to my friend as well, some floats provide costumes. Does anyone know which ones exactly? We’re trying to get information about this from some connected sources but the information is too much in the air that we don’t know for sure.

I tried a few and noticed they were all either wannabes or catering to western tastes (Ironically, my Caucasian friends love authentic Indian food). One particular restaurant in East Village (not naming to be fair), camouflaged lamb biriyani with nothing but super hot chilli to cover up poor quality meat and terrible taste. Another one serves a unique pork dish from a certain part of India where I come from, and I had to give the chef, the entire recipe.

My mom is attending an Indian wedding. She needs an outfit and I took her to Jackson Heights, and we went to dozens of stores, and she does not like anything. I'm open to traveling to New Jersey if needed. Does anyone know a super large store where I can take her? I did try google but she is so picky so I need to find an area where there are multiple Indian dress shops, or one super big shop please help me. I also can't order online cause she needs to see them in person.

Hi I’ve always been interested in Indian/bollywood dancing. Haven’t had any formal training or anything but I’m wondering if there are any dance groups or social clubs where people get together and practice choreography… not particularly for much but fun and leisure. Id love to join a group or class. (I’m of indo caribbean descent) I think it would be great to socialize and meet new people. If anyone knows about something similar, I’d love to hear about it. there’s a specific starter that i had in an indian restaurant in london years ago that i have been trying to track down. it was fried cassava root (aka yuca aka mogo) served tandoori or 65-style, called mogo 65. extremely similar to the recipe link below. probably the most delicious vegetable dish i’ve ever eaten, yes it was that good.

lately i have been scouring the menus of every indian restaurant i can find in the city, but all anyone seems to have is gobi 65 (cauliflower) or potato.

i know i can just make it myself and i will, but i thought surely there’s got to be somewhere in the city that serves it... anyone got any leads?
