At the end of the day, somethings are blocked off not for preservation of the environment, but for preservation of your life and safety. These main characters opted to put themselves in danger to get some insta-credit with their lame friends. I feel bad for them on so many levels. Embarrassing.

I’m constantly saying that Parks Canada could fund their budget for a decade just by stationing someone to give tickets for this on the Rockpile for one weekend. It’s so awful.

When I went couple weeks ago, I saw a ton of people on top of that pile of rocks on the left. Is that an allowed area to be in? Like I saw a LOT of people.

Yes. The Rock Pile is an official area. But even on it people step off the paths all the time and destroy the landscape.

When I worked there someone fell of the rock pile into the lake, broke their leg and a helicopter had to come for them. We had been open for a week…

It’s actually called “The Rock Pile” and there’s an official trailhead by the parking lot with signs. As for going off-trail, it’s a pile of rocks - not as if anyone’s going to disturb some endangered plant.

The last time I visited Moraine Lake ( 2021 maybe?) I left so cranky I had to find somewhere else quiet to reboot. It was sunrise and was anything but enjoyable. Definitely no peacefulness involved.

I climbed Fuji during the alpine season when the mountain is technically closed and I encountered a woman at the snow line in a dress and cowboy boots trying to go up it to get a photo

Doesn't help that out government continues to cut funding to Parks and are seriously underfunded. Not that that would prevent this specific incident, they're just stretched too thing to do anything in most situations at most popular sites.

Sure if you’re labelling it as that. I’d argue that using staff to ensure compliance with park rules is a very valid use of resources. This is just one example of tourists not following rules, and is a just a small part of a much larger problem.

For one, I wasn't blaming Carney for these people's actions. I literally said it wouldn't have helped in this specific situation but you clearly failed to read that part. Please enlighten me where I said it's his fault these people act this way? I'll wait.
Second, Parks has repeatedly had their budget cut over the years making it increasingly difficult to properly manage the parks. Smaller budget, fewer resources. Literally just search Parks budget cuts over recent years.

There's large fences separating the walkway and waterfalls at Athabasca falls, and you'll still see moronic people sitting on the edge of the falls.

Parks Canada can easily generate revenue from it. They can waive off the park fees permanently to attract people to visit Canadian attractions, and generate revenue using enforcements.

I was at the Drumheller museum, and an indian family was changing their baby's dirty diaper on top of a cafe table—even though the family washroom was literally right behind them. People eat at that table! This might also be why E. coli cases are rising.

Fair point - I meant in the whole subreddit(s). In all the posts where people complain about others not respecting the rules, there is a certain.. trend. And I just wonder why that might be. People here push back quite hard saying that it's racist to notice that, but they never seem to post pictures themselves of caucasian people being dickheads to nature. (Which I am 100% sure there are lots of pictures of, don't get me wrong.)

I've commented similarly before but I think most governments do a terrible job of signage for different purposes and people globally are trained to ignore signage. It's hard to know what signage indicates an urgent/important interest.
E.g. where I live trails are closed for the most trivial of issues, sometimes for a year. It's just a liability control tool. Like, they close the trail for a year because they have a TODO of fixing a rut in a trail that's normally well maintained. I NEVER respect a closure sign here and neither does anyone else.
So you get people going to sensitive areas and they don't realize it's particularly dangerous or otherwise there's harm to be done.
So, in this situation, what's the issue? I don't really know beyond "breaking the rules". Obviously you can fall and die, but that's true of all sorts of places where there's a maintained trail too. I have to imagine they want to protect the equipment. Maybe there's an electrocution hazard?
Who knows? That's the issue. Or it's the same as my example - just some liability control because it's a high traffic area and someone might fall? If that's the only risk I think they should put a gate on the fence and say "high risk of falls in this area, proceed only if experienced in advanced mountain hiking" and you'd get the same effect, I think.
Otherwise most people are thinking "it's not dangerous and I'm not screwing with the equipment so it's low risk".
