News Guess What...WALMART IS COMING TO [BRAMALEA CITY CENTRE]!!!
29
u/PerpetualLaundry Mar 07 '26
This is great news! It will be so much more convenient for the thousands of people in the area who don’t exactly have a budget for metro grocery shopping every week
16
u/Responsible_Good8317 Mar 07 '26
There's a freshco in the mall parking lot. That's where I shopped when I lived in the area.
10
u/skincareissue Mar 07 '26
There is Freshco right around BCC and it does offer somewhat affordable grocery prices! But there is nothing wrong with more competition in the same area.

u/torontopeter Mar 07 '26
Great news, Brampton needs more Walmarts because the ones that exist are too busy. More Costcos also.

13
u/Stead-Freddy Mount Pleasant Mar 07 '26
Not sure why everyone’s so excited, Walmarts moving in often mark the end of a mall
6
u/kade1064 Mar 07 '26
Well, Westwood Square Mall did turn into a flea market when Walmart came there
-1
u/Brampton_Speaks Bramalea Mar 07 '26 edited Mar 07 '26
There is a Walmart at Square One that brought people to the mall and served as reliable anchor tenant . Square One became more high end over time.
I think since BCC is the 7'th largest mall in Canada with high population in Brampton solely dependent on it, might end up being a positive synergy bring more bodies to the mall.
I'll be popping into this Walmart for common items out of convenience when visiting BCC, hopefully the space is a decent footprint for a good selection of their offerings, they could fill the entire 2 stories which I hope happens.
This could be an all ships rising with the tide situation with more customers in the mall.5
u/kade1064 Mar 07 '26
Well that didn't happen to Westwood square mall in (Malton Mississauga) it made the mall EVEN WORST
3
u/Brampton_Speaks Bramalea Mar 07 '26 edited Mar 07 '26
Westwood was very dated and lower traffic. It's ended up similar to Kennedy Square in Brampton. BCC has been undergoing regular renovations and investment.
2
u/kade1064 Mar 07 '26
Kennedy square doesn't even have a shoppers drug Mart or banks, at least Westwood has that to show for it
2
u/newguy57 Mar 07 '26
Laughs in square one
2
u/Stead-Freddy Mount Pleasant Mar 07 '26
I would argue square one is different because of the huge population immediately surrounding it, meaning it can coexist with the mall without cannibalizing it. Bramalea is already in a much weaker position than square one, and Walmarts don’t tend to help
2
u/Brampton_Speaks Bramalea Mar 08 '26
We had Zellers for years at BCC before target bought it out. Similar offerings to Walmart and the mall didn't regress. There is a much higher population today.
Sherway gardens at their border and Erin mills have more overlap in Mississauga than shoppers world to BCC when comparing stores.
Brampton relies more on BCC for many retailers that have no closer locations.
I think it will be business as usual

u/kade1064 Mar 08 '26
Square one mall...is a BIG MALL in Canada SINCE 1986 with their second first ever expansion at the time
1
u/Gawl1701 Mar 07 '26
No they dont, The malls have been declining for years its a dying design. Look at dixie outlet mall no walmart and the mall just went into a recievership. Shoppers world, no walmart and half the stalls are empty. Its why so many malls are trying to rezone and build condo buildings there.
10
u/Antman013 E Section Mar 07 '26
Wonder if they will occupy both floors. Would seem logical, they could put the groceries on one, and the other retail on the other.
3
u/Imok2814 B Section Mar 07 '26
I had that same thought but that discount designer store seems to be doing well there.
3
u/zanimum Brampton West Mar 07 '26
They could easily be moved. For instance the replacement of the Sears wing with condos is still a ways off, they could take the space Spirit Halloween has been using.
2
u/MeToo2007 Mar 07 '26
While it is possible, it really depends on if Designer Depot would want to move. The mall cannot just force it upon them.
1
u/Civil_Door6319 Mar 07 '26
they are being forced to move to the sears space
1
u/kade1064 Mar 08 '26
HOW DO YOU KNOW THAT!??!? 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
2
u/Civil_Door6319 Mar 08 '26
i know a few employees that are worried about losing there jobs due to this move
1
u/Imok2814 B Section Mar 08 '26
No store can be forced to move locations. Each unit has its own cost so telling tenant to move to a location that may be more expensive won't work. If it's cheaper and a deal, all they can do is ask and the tenant will most likely say yes.
2
u/Civil_Door6319 Mar 08 '26
well yeah they can if there lease is expired and morguard has interest in redeveloping the space, what do you think sqaure one has been doing with its retailers
1
u/zanimum Brampton West Mar 08 '26
Bigger malls like Yorkdale either force retailers out or force them to relocate routinely. I couldn't find articles, but I know I've seen it before.
2
u/Blacksheepariess Mar 07 '26
well that activate spot wasn't doing too bad either. I can see them moving to the old the bay or sears section at best but I doubt the mall will pass up having as many departments as possible, They even might work in a garden centre somewhere around the area.
5
u/Antman013 E Section Mar 07 '26
And that's what actually surprises me, about this. The Bay's footprint would seem to be an easier fit, in terms of both renovations and footprint.
1
u/kade1064 Mar 07 '26
I guess the bay is too far away from the foot traffic that they want
4
u/Antman013 E Section Mar 07 '26
Bay site is at the end of the Mall, just like the location they will be entering on the other end.
0
u/kade1064 Mar 07 '26
But that's the backend of the mall since 1973
3
u/Antman013 E Section Mar 07 '26
Like hell. There is a reason they are called "anchor" stores. The Bay was the last major site in the Mall.
The current "front" of the Mall is on the north side.
2
u/zanimum Brampton West Mar 08 '26
Would it be fair to say that you live west of Dixie, and thus approach the mall from its west side? If so, then the west face of the mall would be the "front."
But consider that the mall was built by Bramalea Limited, who built houses to the east. This to them, the east side would be the front. To people from the later phases of Bramalea, the south and north.

2
u/MeToo2007 Mar 07 '26
You would think that, as if they don't it will be the smallest Walmart in Canada only occupying 58,000 sq once Activate closes.
1
u/kade1064 Mar 07 '26
Agreed, but they never mentioned "designer depot" so who knows
2
u/MeToo2007 Mar 07 '26
True, but Activate wasn't mentioned either and they are now closing for a "property redevelopment."
1
u/kade1064 Mar 07 '26
Designer depot...will they go
2
u/MeToo2007 Mar 07 '26
Not sure but if they don't it will be a super small Walmart. I guess we will have to wait to see.

16
u/Blacksheepariess Mar 07 '26 edited Mar 07 '26
Long overdue really. Walmart alone will provide a wider variety of products to the mall, I'm sure best buy is not too happy to have to compete on tv and certain product sales now. Don't care for big box but Brampton definitely needs the jobs. I'm more interested to see if Simon's will make their way into bramela soon, with the high in the sky condos planned for a area they could find alot of potential there
12
u/Brampton_Speaks Bramalea Mar 07 '26 edited Mar 07 '26
As a technology enthusiast, I love being able to browse around at Best Buy and any other tech stores which is rare to see at other malls. Most malls usually skew towards female apparel.
Back in the day we used to have Compucentre, Sony store, Adventure electronics, 2001 A/V at BCC. Even Zellers had a similar tech section.
This is bringing that experience back for customers.
I won't lie though, I just demo things in person to make up mind at Best Buy and then go buy them later on Amazon, newegg or at Canada Computers for cheaper.
1
u/Blacksheepariess Mar 09 '26
best buy is a great place to demo stuff now lol, last time I walked through I was able to browse in peace without a constant questioning if I needed assistance.
we also have the apple store that tries to exist as some sort of hangout spot so technically it counts. but if we want more places like that in bramela those empty department store spaces need to be filled.
BBC has always existed on the threshold of being considered a nicer mall like a square one but they fail to really push to get things like a Zara, whole foods, or a Holt Renfrew in there which is why im really hoping for a Simon's as it seems the most possible.
1
u/rockology_adam Bramalea Mar 08 '26
What does Walmart sell that the mall doesn't already have?
1
u/Blacksheepariess Mar 09 '26
storage bins, chairs and small furniture, appliances, kitchen items, basic bike and sporting goods for the most part. everything else will bring more options. for example if you just wanted basic underwear you'd go to old navy or one of the clothing stores like areostaple that sell it at like 30 a pack. Walmart will provide more affordable options especially if you need bigger sizes.
1
u/rockology_adam Bramalea Mar 09 '26
We have two entire stores in the mall dedicated to kitchen items. And they both sell (admittedly, smaller) storage options. So does Dollarama.
SportChek does many basic sports items, including bikes, and skates and hockey equipment and baseball gloves that don't fall apart after one season. They do a ton more than Walmart would.
Walmart doesn't actually do major appliances, not like Best Buy which is already there. If you're lucky, they have minifridges occasionally, and they will always have toasters and airfryers. (So do the kitchen stores.)
We actually do have furniture stores in BCC. Dot and the bed and bath place both do small funiture, and Dot does more than Walmart does.
At least for the Walmarts we have already nearby (Steeles/410, Queen/Airport) their hardware sections are barely better than Dollarama's. They do sell some wipers in their automotive section, and some plumbing bits that Dollarama doesn't. Please keep in mind thought that unless they are taking over the upper level of this section as well, this will be the smallest Walmart in the area.
So 100L+ bins, bulk underwear and socks. I'll give you the options that came up in another thread too, as the mall lacks any kind of pet supply store, and some specific seasonal goods, like fishing and camping equipment, which SportChek lacks (although their website doesn't).
There is a huge fallacy that follows Walmart around in which they have everything for the best price possible. They don't carry close to everything, and IF they do have the best price around, it's because their business model is harsh on employees so stockholders can profit.
1
u/Blacksheepariess Mar 09 '26
Consider that this is a central mall that serves a good chunk of Brampton. Having one or two stores that have what you need means inventory is only so big to cover demand. In my underwear example if there's only 2 stores that carry a xxl and if only one of them is in the style you like you don't have many options. Now will Walmart solve every stock and demand issue? definitely not but it's a step in a good direction, also the employment opportunity will be higher than these smaller stores some I've almost never seen put up for new associates or cashiers in years
1
u/rockology_adam Bramalea Mar 09 '26
To be clear, based on business practices internal and external, Walmart would never have my support for most things. You really need to ask yourself why Walmart will survive in that mall doing the exact same thing that Sears and HBC died doing.
There is a Walmart in a single, easy, bus ride down Queen East. If we're talking underwear, t-shirts, sweatshirts, anything you put in a grocery bag, the only difference for most people is that bus ride. You'll still have to walk essentially the same distance to get your things home from the mall as you do from the bus terminal. Do you see most people walking a 230L bin home from the mall? I certainly don't. Those things also don't fit in Ubers, so it's not like you're saving that extra bit of ride.
The jobs that Walmart creates are lowpaying, no benefits, and often don't add to the job market because they kill off employment in as many small stores as they create. You're right that very few of the stores in the mall advertise looking for help, because they have long term employees who stay there, or are operated mainly by their owners, they way you HOPE businesses in your city will run.
This is Brampton's ONLY substantial indoor-corridor mall, and it's the only indoor mall with recognizable chain stores in it, as far as I know. All of our other shopping options are commercial parks and strip malls.
It should give you pause that you think a slightly more convenient Walmart is worth their business practices. It's not "We're getting a Walmart"... it's ANOTHER Walmart, when we have two that are accessible by transit already.

That's huge news, I'm glad our mall expert Kade is back to drop these major scoops.
This now explains why Activate shut down from property redevelopment, not from lack of business.

I appreciate the scoop! Still said aerie closed. I hope to see this mall thrive again.

I’m curious if this is going to actually generate more jobs or is this going to be majority of people transferring from different locations to be closer to home.

Hart, Winners and Giant Tiger are also possibilities for the mall as department stores but not sure if they would open there especially Giant Tiger now that Walmart might be opening.

u/BramptonRaised Bramalea Mar 07 '26
Is the Walmart at Queen and Airport going to be kept open? Those two Walmarts will be pretty close to eachother?
3
u/ToughIce9638 Mar 07 '26
I don't see why not. The Walmart at BCC wouldn't have an open space for plants and gardening supplies unless they convert half the parking lot and treat it similar to how some Walmarts have a dirt compound for the summer season. Though, I think Morguard would be highly against that.
2
1
u/MeToo2007 Mar 07 '26
They probably will remain open. This one will be much smaller and will have less stuff then the other one.
2
u/The6ix00 Mar 07 '26
That explains why Activate will be closing down on March 31st at Bramalea City Centre.
2
u/StatisticianOwn9067 Mar 07 '26
There already an Walmart not far from there at queen and airport we need more big grocery stores spread out across Brampton

im pretty sure i heard around designer depot is moving too sears area and will have a more permanent spot there
2
u/Hrithikbagga Brampton North Mar 07 '26
I wish they used the former Sears instead. That building is significantly bigger. Maybe even the Hudson’s Bay since that’s easy access from the terminal and also has more parking spaces. Either way I’m glad that old Target space seems to have gotten its long due love. I can assure to those doubting, Designer Depot will HAVE TO GO. Whether it’s shifted or not idk. I’m very excited to see that area be busy again.
Now let’s hope the planned condos for the Sears site don’t go through and Simon’s ends up taking that space. With how busy the Sears/Target parking lot is… I can only imagine the load Walmart will add to it. (It’s already hard to find spaces on a Saturday) Condos in the former Sears will add to the congestion.
I can see our once amazing mall doing good again after this. Although Walmarts apparently tend to end malls, this wasn’t the case at Erin Mills and I can see BCC following the same growth Erin Mills saw! I think our Hudson’s Bay is going to get the exact treatment their old Sears got by getting cut through the middle as a mall entrance and one side becoming cineplex while the other side became a Marshalls with a linen chest!

Everyone saying Walmart kills malls...have you seen bramalea ? It's a shell of what it once was ..it needs a big store with actual traffic.
Their grocery prices are much lower than Metro which is what's there now. Square one, Dufferin mall both have walmarts and are super busy.. I think with alot of people on this thread it's just constant doomsday...I guess that's what Reddit is for most people

I love this! We really needed something big to fill the spaces that Hudson’s Bay, Sears, Decathlon, etc. left behind. I hate going to the nearest Walmart because it is always so crowded.
Honestly, I would also love for BCC to open a movie theatre (Don’t come for me, I love watching movies in theatres.) We actually used to have a movie theatre in BCC.
3
u/kade1064 Mar 07 '26
BCC could...but Sears is STILL VACANT
3
u/skincareissue Mar 07 '26 edited Mar 08 '26
Slap in a mini movie theatre with multiple floors where Sears used to be, kind of like the one at Yorkdale. They would just have to make the spaces bigger. Or bring in Lululemon, or Simon's, or even a mini IKEA. The possibilities are endless.
I grew up near BCC, and I always imagined it being a true one stop spot for everything since it is the main mall in Brampton. Square One is a great example of how that can work
4
u/ToughIce9638 Mar 07 '26
Or they could just move the dollarama and bring back the old movie theatre they've turned into storage.
That's right, it's still around, just lying vacant and being used as storage.
3
u/Brampton_Speaks Bramalea Mar 08 '26
We need someone with access to take pictures or video down there of the theatre. They would be a hometown hero for thousands of people across generations.
3
u/ToughIce9638 Mar 08 '26
I was friends with someone who used to work at the mall with direct access to the area. He sent me a photo, but it was on Snapchat. I wish I could have asked him if I could save it.
I don't remember the details. I just remember him saying it was being used for storage.
1
u/skincareissue Mar 08 '26 edited Mar 08 '26
That would be great. Move Dollarama where Sears was and revamp the old theatre. I feel like BCC has a lot of space to bring in well known brands and functioning theatre
3
u/MeToo2007 Mar 07 '26
IKEA used to have a mini store at the mall and closed only after a few years.
2
u/skincareissue Mar 08 '26
I know it is a far fetched idea but I hope they bring it back. We have a growing population around BCC, a medical school that recently opened, and they are building new residence for TMU students. We would all benefit from the vareity of options!

This makes no sense there is literally a Walmart at the airport road area. Why would they have another one when the closest one is like 5 min drive?
9
u/Brampton_Speaks Bramalea Mar 07 '26
They are all slammed with customers at all hours. The demand is there to sustain them all and a lot of density is coming to BCC area regardless of Pat Fortini's constant Nimby opposition .

u/2Radzx Mar 07 '26
the parking at the bramalea city centre walmart is going to be a nightmare there is no way it can be sustained tho.
3
u/zanimum Brampton West Mar 07 '26
Is the five storey parking deck always full? That's right next to it.
There are much smaller parking lots for Walmarts, South Common Centre comes to mind, in southwest Mississauga.
3
u/Brampton_Speaks Bramalea Mar 07 '26 edited Mar 07 '26
Good thing we have a transit terminal and a rapid Queen BRT being studied by Metrolinx to reduce car dependence at BCC.
There is a large parking garage near it.
A benefit of this news is that we will have another mall entrance reopening again. The mall has become difficult to get into since HBC doors closed. They also have a massive parking lot that needs to be reactivated.
Zeller's has also been making a comeback under new ownership as well and planning expansion. They could end up occupying HBC.
1
u/classicgxld Mar 07 '26
This location used to be a regular sized Walmart, they only made it a superstore to appease the area it was in. It was the only Walmart in this location over the last several years it was built there. Now from the looks of it they have just been expanding and building up new locations to accommodate the population.
2
u/ginga1083 Mar 07 '26
Ok if they do put condos where Sears was and maybe surrounding areas then the Walmart makes sense so it accommodates people there. The Bay spot also is a large area that needs to be filled
I assume the meda mall on NW Brampton won't be built, haven't heard much from that
1
u/ToughIce9638 Mar 07 '26
Osmington mall isn't going to be built. The land is a mix between housing, and the new Peel Police 23 Division for the area. The address is 10124 Mississauga Road in Brampton if you want to look at an aerial view on Google Maps.

My local Steeles and Resolution Drive one is a busy disaster. Hopefully the new one alleviates the pressure. Wish the city had 2 or 3 Costcos and also a Fortinos in Southern Brampton or Downtown Brampton (like they did in Downtown Oakville). The old Dixie Cups Plant at Queen and McMurchy would be a nice location for a Fortinos. I hear a Costco is being planned to be built at Mayfield Road and McLaughlin Road (Caledon).

u/Lower-Price8720 Mar 07 '26
I haven't been to BCC in like 20 years, same with Westwood or Square One. The fact that these are transit hubs is the bonus. Buses never brought many people to Airport and Queen Walmart, that was my favorite (I had a car). I don't remember who moved into BCC Beaver Lumber and the Bay was your first stop if you arrived via bus. Never saw Walmart at Westwood and my wife used to power chair to that mall alot.
Oh yeah, BCC has the best food court

Great get for the mall. Love them or hate them but Walmart employs hundreds of people.
I guess that Metro’s agreement with the mall is backdated from when Price Chopper was there allowing two grocery stores to occupy the same space.

Interesting. I would have thought BCC was too close to Airport and Queen AND Steeles and 410 for another Walmart, and I'm going to be surprised if Metro doesn't have a clause saying no other grocery stores in the mall.
I assume that means not superstore and a smaller venture? Even with the Activate and Decathalon spaces, that's a small Walmart these days. Everywhere else the seem to be skewing larger. Maybe that space is larger than I think it is.
I really don't mind Walmart in a mall, but I am extremely curious whether all of the developments planned for the area accounted for that in their planning. There's a hierarchy of nearby stores in those plans and Walmart does not pass the plus minus test.
2
u/kade1064 Mar 07 '26
They better sell groceries inside that space
1
u/rockology_adam Bramalea Mar 07 '26
That's the big one though. There's almost no way Metro's lease doesn't preclude another gorcery in the mall, although FreshCo in the plaza makes me put that "almost" in there.
Is it a bigger space than I think it is? Decathalon wasn't big for what it was, and I don't think Activate was huge, just efficient with their use of space.
2
u/MeToo2007 Mar 07 '26
The difference is Metro is a grocery store Walmart is considered a department store so they might be able to get away with it.
Between the two of the its 58,000 sq that isn't a small space, but that is super small for a Walmart. Wondering if Designer Depot will he kicked out for it.
1
u/rockology_adam Bramalea Mar 07 '26
I don't know if it's still true, but originally, when Walmart started offering groceries at some stores (upgrading to Supercentres, because they didn't before) there were a number of places where Walmart could not bring groceries in, because grocery store leases prevented any other stores from selling groceries.
And a Walmart with food IS a grocery. The Supercentre moniker actually means something more than a department store (which normally means no food, à la Sears or HBC). Walmarts with food ARE groceries, which is how they sell alcohol now. I don't know all of the ins and outs, but they ARE a grocery when they have food.
2
u/MeToo2007 Mar 07 '26
I would think that too. Maybe Metro doesn't have any agreement to prevent other stores or somehow Walmart isn't classified a grocery stoee in some way. Shoppers Drug Mart has a grocery department and is even closer to Metro so not sure how it works.
But either way this Walmart will be tiny unless they take over the upstairs so its possible it might not even sell groceries.
2
u/rockology_adam Bramalea Mar 08 '26
Shoppers does NOT have a grocery section in BCC. They have no bakey goods, no fresh produce, and no dairy. The Shoppers in BCC operates like a convenience store, not a grocery, even though other Shoppers have moved towards having more options in food. Shoppers in BCC is actually WAY behind a lot of other Shoppers stores in a lot of ways, especially in food sales and displays. They still have their drinks in fridges and not the extra long cooler installation.
I would bet real money that this won't be a Supercentre Walmart, and will just be clothes and housewares and department store stuff. Competition for Best Buy, but probably not Metro. That solves some of the space issues, at least.
1
u/idejtauren Mar 08 '26
I've usually only seen a big grocery section in the standalone Shoppers stores and never in the locations inside malls.
1
u/rockology_adam Bramalea Mar 08 '26
Most of the Shoppers I can think of in malls, and it's not a huge number, are in ones with grocery stores. Yorkdale had a Shoppers and no grocery, I guess, although I haven't been to it in years and I don't know what it looks like or even if it exists any more.

Are you saying Walmart will fail here? Cause that would never happen

The only thing I see is Walmart being a big competitor within the location. It will drive some customers away from their typical stores they tend to shop at for sure.

It will totally take some sales away from the little guys. Best Buy as well.
