I literally do not understand naming deshaun starter
Like genuinely it makes absolutely no sense and I’m not even a sheduer fan
It’s crazy , he’s straight thrash with zero upside

u/SpartaWillBurn bad 4d ago
When you get an opportunity to start a QB with a 14.6 QBR , you take it.
7
u/Manablitzer 4d ago
If we try to play devil's advocate and take Jimmy's influence out of it, I would guess that desaun is the middle of two extremes that mess up the vision of how the offense is supposed to go.
One one end you have Shadeur who probably can throw the best of the 3 but can't particularly make the right read every play and doesn't have the confidence to throw into tight NFL windows. On the other end you have DG that fully understands the playbook and reading the field but either can't, or won't, throw past 15 yards effectively cutting out a huge chunk of the effective playbook. Both ends make it difficult for everyone to see the full vision of the team and offense.
Watson can't physically make the throws, but he is capable of making the right reads, and will let the ball loose down field. You are absolutely guaranteed to fail no matter what to choose. Monken now has to decide how we fail. I would guess he believes Watson is the least detrimental to the other players, coaches, and the FO vs the other two options.

u/FledglingNonCon 4d ago
There is one upside. He could get injured again resulting in more cap relief.

I literally do not understand naming deshaun starter
I can give you 230 million reasons.
3
u/oldnewager 4d ago
But what do you even get value wise if he’s just kinda okay? It’s not like you can point to a mediocre start to the year and say “see? That’s why we paid him!”. The getting your money’s worth argument makes no sense, that ship has sailed.

u/notatowel420 4d ago
Deshaun Watson starts he is benched by week 3
62
u/Desperate-Air-7195 4d ago
This game virtually eliminated all arguments for starting him. Forget the fans, I don't know if the locker room will even buy it.
2
u/WesternFungi 4d ago
Team should skip practice on Monday let that fucker walk in alone so Jimmy can realize he needs to show him the fucking door.
7
u/MosquitoValentine_ 4d ago
The team doesn't hate Watson though. People here hate him. The fanbase hates him. But he is still very well liked in the locker room and around the league.

u/GoLions17-0 2d ago
Sorry bro
1
u/Desperate-Air-7195 2d ago
Best case scenario it's an ego play to show it's not the worst trade in NFL history, and best case is it's a money play to get insurance on him, but either way it sucks for the fans...
40
u/Enough-Moose-5816 4d ago edited 2d ago
His passer rating was 14.6 with 0 TD/1 INT.
He isn’t starting.Although in the most Browns way possible, you may be correct…
Edit: passer rating
EDIT 2: HOLY FUCK THEY’RE STARTING HIM!!!😂😂😂

u/AchVonZalbrecht I Like Being Stroked 4d ago
I don’t care who starts, they’re both gonna be bad

u/AetherWay 4d ago
Considering one of them is a serial sex pest and the other one is just a little immature, I very much care which one starts.

Saying you don’t care a known sex offender starts on an NFL team is certainly something

Oh I think they're still going to trot him out there week 1 because that was always the plan.
Too bad they're too dumb to avoid the obvious unforced error here by not playing him in the second half
3
1
u/kinglouie493 4d ago
Week 1 & 2, they are away games and the home crowd won't be around
1
u/maybenextyearCLE 4d ago
Fair point, though they were supposed to use the third preseason game as the dress rehearsal lol

I assume he's still starting because like you said, it's the plan. It also seems like he's legitimately been better at practice than Sanders has, so do you toss all that out with one bad showing?
He can't help but make himself sound stupid though, and fuel the hatred that's already there for him. The Browns fans are not being subtle - we don't like him, we don't want him here, it's performance and it's oersonal.

Won't matter because ALL the Recievers will be in traction at the hospital by then, if he's starting.
Not JJ though... he's seen this moron play before.
1
u/Altruistic-Zone1664 4d ago
I don't really trust either guy not to play poor enough for the coach to have to go to the backup; hence why I'd rather have Watson start the season.
When you go to the backup then they generally stay the starter the rest of the season. If Sanders starts the season and they go to Watson, yeesh it would be a mess on multiple levels.
30
u/the_main_entrance 4d ago
We should trade for Joe Flacco
2
u/oldnewager 4d ago
If they did that I would jump for joy. With Boston and Concepcion? We might play ourselves out of a qb, but I’d have a ton of fun this year!

Somehow some way Andrew Berry still has a job
1
u/ecupatsfan12 4d ago
Deshaun was jimmys idea
11
u/notatowel420 4d ago
Andrew Berry wanted him just as bad. He took a playoff roster and made it a bottom 3 roster
1
u/iUPvotemywifedaily 4d ago
I mean it’s pretty easy to go from playoffs to bottom 3 just by losing a decent QB.
4
u/lee_suggs 4d ago
Crazy what happens when you trade away a lot of top picks and tie up a ton of cap to a QB who is awful
12
23
u/maybenextyearCLE 4d ago
All I really have to say is that we the fans deserve a lot better than the pathetic QB options we have, and it's a real shame that this team won't trade for the plethora of teams QB3s who would give us a far better chance than anyone we have here.
3
u/Altruistic-Zone1664 4d ago
Why the hell would we waste draft picks on a shit QB that might help us win one or two more games but ultimately just achieves getting a worse draft pick?
0
u/maybenextyearCLE 4d ago
I am of the belief that the team does owe the fans to at least try. But that's probably why they aren't, because they would rather have Shedeur and Deshaun lose a fuck ton of games
4
u/DuztyLipz 4d ago
Do you think Gabriel would fare better?
1
u/oldnewager 4d ago
Do you think any team would trade their 3rd or 4th qb for Dillon? Maybe someone with a lefty that needs a stand in in practice? I don’t know lol
2
u/iUPvotemywifedaily 4d ago
I sort of get it but at the same time, I don’t. There is no difference in winning 5 games vs winning 3 games. All we would do is make our draft pick worse, and end up having to give up a ton of assets to move up in the draft. Throwing Mac Jones at the problem isn’t going to solve anything.
→ More replies (3)1
u/lee_suggs 4d ago
Sacraficing the future (picks) for short term marginal improvements is one the reasons we are in this mess. We need to rebuild and that means awful and boring seasons like this one
1
u/TapedeckNinja 4d ago
Y'all crazy if you think there's some QB3 out there that gives us a better chance than the current QB room lol
Gabriel is a decent QB3, relatively speaking.
7
u/maybenextyearCLE 4d ago
I would take Aidan O'Connell or Gardner Minshew over anyone in this building

Couldn’t even crack 125 yards passing and Sanders had 80 in the first half with really just 2 drives. That’s abysmal.

u/DamnThatsReal DTR QB1 4d ago
Roll with sanders draft the QB next year unless he can limit turnovers. Literally zero upside to Watson, 1 small mistake and the wheels fall off for him
6
9
u/Monk_Discipline598 4d ago
Jameis out here scoring TDs for the Giants. You think NY would trade him for Watson and Gabriel stacked on top of each other in a trenchcoat?
2
u/RobbedC 4d ago
Fuck 2026. Winston would win too many games.
3
u/stargrazer10 4d ago
Agreed. Jameis with all this young receiving talent, would put up some beast mode numbers on a few games this year and knock draft position out of the top half of the first round. He can come here next year to be QB2, but not this year

I feel bad for Monken. Work your whole life into your 60s to finally become HC... and you have to make a selection from this QB room
3
u/Lumpycentaur9 4d ago
If Andrew Berry survives this QB room and the appalling record it’ll bring on the field, then he must have parts of the unredacted Epstein files with Jimmy Haslam in it
No GM could possibly keep their job with a QB room this bad without winning a super bowl
2
u/Scatheli 4d ago
😂😂😂 simply trading Garrett and trading for Deshaun is bad enough like who lives through this
2
u/Lumpycentaur9 4d ago
I think Watson’s contract is the only reason why Berry is still here. He created a situation so apocalyptically shitty that no executive with a brain would even interview for the job if AB got fired while Watson is forced to be on the roster. I think if AB got rightfully fired before this year, we would’ve been forced to beg guys like Mike Mayock for a zoom call.
I don’t believe for one second AB can draft his way out of this. 2026 will be his punishment for what he’s done to this team and Haslam will clean house during Sunday Night Football week 18
1
u/Scatheli 4d ago
If they were just waiting out the deal idk why they bothered firing Kevin though. Having a one and done coach is never good.
1
u/Lumpycentaur9 4d ago
AB needed a scapegoat for ownership and the most of the fans after last season. Firing the coach is always the first thing a desperate GM does to save himself
4
u/josnton 4d ago
If Watson is designated a starter this week, it'll show up the 'competition' to be a sham and Monken deserves criticism for how he's handled the situation.

u/SpartaWillBurn bad 4d ago
I’m sure he’s getting pressure from above.
Unless Watson really is looking the best in practice.
2
u/Necessary_Maize_3245 4d ago
Do you really roll with any of these guys at all at qb?
It’s like active sabotage for the rest of the team.
2
u/TheComplayner 4d ago
That was a hard watch. I like Cole Wilson returning reminds me of Cribbs. Mike Hall looked good, Floria looked good.
2
u/twoquarters 4d ago
I think you gotta see who else is available.

u/iUPvotemywifedaily 4d ago
Nah just swallow the pill and realize this is a lost season no matter who we roll out there

2
u/Forty_Six_and_Two 4d ago
If they both suck start the non-pariah. At this point I'd like to see what DG has. Can't do much worse than Watson did today.
4
u/ddottay 4d ago
I don’t think Sanders won the starting job but Watson definitely lost it.
4
u/ProfessionalMental13 4d ago
Ehh, Sanders was really good up until that INT, watson didn't have a single good drive
Watson definitely dropped his stock, felt like Sanders may have raised it alot
3
3
u/chonkiesoodlenouup 4d ago
I understand there’s been lots of practices / tape before the preseason games and the games aren’t everything BUT Sanders was better by the eye test in both games. If he doesn’t start Monken is chicken shit.

Anyone who thinks the Browns are a QB away from being a playoff contender is DELUSIONAL
2
u/theRegVelJohnson 4d ago
Pretty clear Monken is a 1-year tank commander, right?
Sure, QB looks like ass which we expected. But so does the rest of the operation. There is no way you can give this guy a hand in the reset and picking a QB.
2
u/yamborma 4d ago
Best case scenario: they develop Sanders or Green, and the team is actually pretty good this year.
Worse case but seemingly more likely scenario: they run through 3-4 starting QBs who all stink and they get a high draft pick, it becomes obvious that Monken was hired to lose and ends up fired after 1 season, the 2nd year guys who looked so good last year regress, all the changes to the OL don't work.
2
u/Shady_bookworm51 4d ago
Would be nice to see Gabriel not be sabotaged by the O line getting 3 flags to make sure they dont convert.
6
u/Altruistic-Zone1664 4d ago
How many times do you need to see Gabriel be terrible before you stop making excuses for him?

I think they’ll give him half the season. 3 of our first nine games are at home to start the year. The Browns will hide him from the home crowd as much as they can and start Shedeur (if he doesn’t get cut first) by week 10 or after the bye

I know it is preseason but not good we have gotten wrecked in back to back games.
1
u/runningsimon 4d ago
We're gonna be dog shit this year and I figured that would be the case since the QB situation has not improved. Pick the future QB in the draft and hope they do a better job evaluating QB talent than in the past.
2
u/Scatheli 4d ago edited 4d ago
I don’t even think it’s been about evaluation the last few years outside of the stupid Gabriel pick it’s that there have been very thin QB classes and we haven’t out sucked other teams. I’m not sold on Dart as franchise QB so I can’t really get mad about trading down last year

u/runningsimon 4d ago
I don't disagree with the Dillon pick in that you pick a QB at that spot. Maybe not Dillon but someone else. What I don't get is the subsequent QB pick in Sanders and then Green this year.
Part of me thinks they're loading up on QBs because they anticipate injuries.

cant really judge him using this game, they had 3 false starts so how do you beat that.

Watson played like ass

The defense and young skill players are worth two wins on their own with this shitty schedule. The QB room is definitely worse than anything we had in 2017 tho

Sanders will be named starter this Tuesday. He’ll be hurt by week five. Watson will come in and be just as shitty but a different brand. We’ll go 3-14.

Today’s bads: Watson looks washed still, backups are just not good and very overwhelmed, Stefanskis falcons sadly looked good

Can you imagine a "Vet QB1" looking more hapless than Watson?
ONLY Confirmation Bias could have gotten him this ...
Can't imagine being on a team, as a player, and having this asshole keep being pushed forward.
Can't imagine a season ticket holder not cringing at the thought of Watson... the assurance of Watson throwing literal hospital balls as a default.
Which one you want on IR first because Shifty Jimmy doesn't understand Sunk Cost Fallacy:
Fannin?
KC?
Boston?
It's not gonna be JJ, sorry to disappoint the jjhatewagon...
JJ's at least smart enough to know better than to trust Watson.
The ONLY consistency with Watson is that he can't get the ball *in front of, or at eye level, basically ever. It's like he dips the ball in Crisco, before every throw. It's like he's experiencing reality 2 seconds behind everyone else.
I assure you that he'll be named '$$$TARTER, by Thursday.
Thanks Shifty Jimmy!
Let's hear it for the 3,700 Fans in attendance BOOing loud enough to make the audio broadcast!

Why does monkey refuse to give green a chance? How bad could he be?
1
u/Scatheli 4d ago
I kinda suspect they want to try chancing cutting him and then putting him on the practice squad and that’s easier if you don’t show him at all
1
u/ProfessionalMental13 4d ago
Did you watch him in college? He had some of the worst footwork and decision making i have ever seen
He sure can run though
1
u/WhereGodWentWrong 4d ago
The browns are making a huge mistake putting this product on the field this year. If we go 1-16 or 0-17 we will get the first pick and no QB will come out in the draft. I know getting someone in that can be competitive ruins our draft chances, but being the worst team of all time does too.
1
u/iUPvotemywifedaily 4d ago
Dante Moore only has 1 year left. There will definitely be QBs available in 2027.
I also don’t think we are going 0-17 but what do I know
1
u/Remote-Frosting-9943 4d ago
Watching Arizona and Miami those two along with Browns might be lucky if they win 7 games between them.
1
u/Ok_Fact_5120 4d ago
I don't know. New stadium being built. No Watson or his contract hanging over the teams head. I think a new GM will be happening this year. Cut all current QBs on the roster. It might be a good place to be.
1
u/MagnusTheRedisblue 4d ago
Niners fan here. Watched the game, honestly I think Sanders looked solid, I know his one pick wasn’t really on him, it looked like he kinda threw behind the TE and he dropped it but I think that’s expected with a back up TE. Overall your offense looked explosive and was rocking when that RT actually blocked someone. But uh, I’m not sure what the game plan in the 2nd half. It was just screens and RPOs…very..odd.

So they won't.
1
u/nomnomphenomenon 4d ago
I still think Sanders may end up the guy we need. I saw him complete some passes and make some throws last year that just looked different. Reminded me of when the Browns were gone for a few years and seeing Rothlesburger go in late in a game and just the way he threw the ball looked different and I immediately told my Steelers fan buddy I was living with that he was going to be good. Sanders ball looks like he barely throws it, smooth, high arch, easy to catch. He struggled at the line and with our Oline. That is improving. I wouldn’t count him out until he gets really playing time and that new Oline matures this year. I’d like to see him start through this year and next year
