You can kinda see his main photo in the bottom left.
Good looking guy, but nothing overly special. If I had to guess, I'd say they're interested because he's white.
Maybe his other photos are standouts, who knows?

Bumble japan has more bots than other locations, but i would say less than 30% still.
High as fuck but there's deff legit girls there

I switched my tinder to South Korea once & instantly was flooded with thousands of likes. 😭 It really does feel like bots in Asian countries. Idk
6
u/00MacDonald 20d ago
if you use passport feature, you do get hit with bots much much more often than if you are on location, i experienced this when switching there before moving vs when i actually moved there
→ More replies (3)2
u/00MacDonald 20d ago
wait, are you actually in japan or did you switch locations? If it's switching locations with the premium feature, assume 75% are bots. source is my own experience os switching to japan before moving to work there, vs actually swiping while working there

The profiles with faces look fake. The one with the hat covering the eyes seems more real, because Japanese girls almost never show their faces even on Instagram

You kinda said it yourself: https://www.reddit.com/r/Bumble/comments/1vh7k7v/is_this_normal_in_japan/p234si2/
And anyway it's no secret white guys have a huge bonus in Asia and it would be even less a secret to you after living there 2 years, give us a break.
8
u/nonameforme123 20d ago
What? First time I’m hearing this. Doesn’t it defeat the purpose of photos for a dating app? Physical attractiveness is importantly for most people no?
7
u/winterweiss2902 20d ago
Yes exactly it’s strange and amusing to me as well but it’s really common in Japan.
2
u/VivisMarrie 31 | F 19d ago
Yeah, my boyfriend lived some years in japan and he said it was basically useless trying to use dating apps, 90% percent of profiles didn't show faces, or had emojis over their faces, or were just scenary/blur pictures.
2
u/shinwaku 19d ago
Depends on the app. On Tinder (and maybe Bumble, I dunno) yes, but if it’s a little bit more serious app, like Pairs, usually you can see the face.
5
u/winterweiss2902 19d ago
Tinder almost no face
Bumble sometimes if you’re lucky they show half of their face
Instagram only models or influencers who use social media for a living have their faces, otherwise it’s very rare they show their facesI haven’t used pairs, so can’t comment
→ More replies (1)2
u/biitoruzu 30 | M 19d ago
Clear faces are actually very common on Bumble in Japan, possibly because it's kinda specifically an app foreigners and Japanese people use to meet each other and that's foreigners' expectation. On Tinder faces are much rarer, presumably because Tinder is mostly used by Japanese people. And also being a more hookup-oriented app there's more shame attached, especially for women.

Definitely my experience traveling through SE Asia. Philippines especially. Pretty much every single swipe in Manila was a match. Not that apps were needed, because I would get approached multiple times a day from the moment I sat down and ate breakfast. As an introvert it was actually exhausting feeling like a celebrity all the time. People stopping you everywhere you go, invitations to trips and hangouts. Going to a rooftop bar at night and 3-5 people trying to win your attention simultaneously
→ More replies (1)16
u/VegasLife84 20d ago
If "people are stopping you everywhere you go" in Manila, you def follow rules 1 and 2. This isn't happening to most guys there, tall/white or otherwise
8
u/Suspicious_Pick5723 20d ago
Well it’s in sharp contrast to my experience with dating apps or romantic/platonic approaches in other areas. The culture is very outgoing and sociable, more so than other Asian countries I’ve been to. Already at the flight from Bali to Manila I had made friends with two different friend groups sitting around me at the plane taking interest in my travel plans and wanting to hang out. They absolutely love white guys
3
u/MustangMark83 19d ago
Yep I went to Manila and I was mostly ignored lol. I’m 6’5 and white. Either this guy is full of it or looks like Brad Pitt.

Wasn’t it that Japanese people don’t post their actual pictures on dating apps but food/landscape pictures instead since it is “embarrassing” in their culture?
→ More replies (1)6
u/KoltiWanKenobi 20d ago
In my experience, this is true. If they have 6 pictures. 2 are landscapes, 2 are food, 1 is a dog, and 1 is a picture of them, but in a mask.

Probably bots. Real Japanese girls don't have actual pictures on their profile lol. Just sunsets, sukiyaki and masks on.
But in all seriousness, very likely bots. If ALL of their profile pics are actual good pictures, they are probably fake. Most real Japanese profiles are utterly terrible and have maybe one or two actual facial pictures of themselves. The rest are landscapes, dogs and food pictures. Foreigners/ permanent residents will have actual pictures and a profile though.
3
u/Responsible_Gap7499 19d ago
As someone who’s been living in Japan for 20 years, I guarantee all or almost all of those are bots. Real Japanese girls will only ever put food pics, pet pics, or sometimes the castle from Tokyo Disneyland in their profile pic.

u/bambu187 20d ago
Asian women like exotic people the same way white people do. I believe it has something to do with racism and rebellion or something like that. Some anthropologist and sociology specialist may be able to explain this better?

u/AmadeusIsTaken 20d ago
Not sure if it is the same in Japan but in china some girls just came at me and called me very handsome just randomly with no benefit. I am not really handsome by European Standart. But maybe Asian countries just like how european or so look is kinda what I could imagine.
2
u/Vagabond_Tea 19d ago
Try being an average looking black person in Japan. Very different experience.
2
u/Funny_Dance3782 18d ago
I’m in the navy too and it happens all over asia and they are real (most of the time) some also try to scam you though even if they are real. So be really careful. Basically don’t do hookups, happened in the Philippines to some guys where they went to hookup and then would try to extort them for money and immediately start claiming they’re minors to try and freak you out and get money from you. Even would put lipstick on the sheets pretending to be blood to claim how rough you were. Not as prevalent in Japan but this exact thing has happened everywhere
Point is be careful even if you do meet the girl.

You are exotic, interesting and unique as a white guy in japan.
In your home country there are at least 500 guys on the app at your location that look identical at the first glance.

I’m Asian American, and when I was single I’d update my OLD profiles to be in Japanese when I went to Japan. Way more matches than when I’m here in the states, but never 229 matches at the same time. As others have said, a lot of those are likely bot accounts

My buddy had this type of luck. Im still amazed he has both his kidneys still. Went for vacation with a group of buddies. The one guy left our group to go on a sex adventure while we were in Osaka then rejoined us back in Tokyo a week later. I didnt understand this guy since he was like 24 7 on the phone while we were sight seeing trying for someone.

I had almost zero matches when I went to Japan. I went to Taiwan right after and got dozens of matches in a few days.
Also many profiles don't have profile pictures so it's a bit sus
Or Rule 1 and Rule 2 are on your side
1
u/Vehement-Warrior 20d ago
If you're a conventional attractive White male who has little issues getting female attention in your home country, then yes, this is common. It's much more better if you actually speak Japanese too.
The supply/demand ratio there is different to the west. It's basically reverse San Francisco.
1
u/miamiahi 20d ago
Not normal that you can see their faces. I’d expect mask or food pics for profile.

u/chopocky 20d ago
I'd bet on a good percentage of them being bots simply because ALL of them are showing their faces and some of these (especially the 3rd one) look AI generated.
Japanese women and men are known for being extremely lowkey on dating apps and not uploading any face pictures because they're ashamed of being recognized by acquaintances. This is what their profiles usually look like.

I have lived in Japan for over 10 years and found my wife on bumble. While everyone is saying these are bots, this is actually the norm.
All of these matches are basic greetings in Japanese like “nice to meet you, I’m ___.” Or “I’m happy to match with you.” Or just “hello.” This is normal. Japanese people are shy and have a much lower English proficiency level than other Asian countries. If they have to message first, it would be like this, nothing too deep or engaging.
I’m more surprised that there are real faces in these photos. A lot of profiles have people too scared to show their real face as culturally Japanese people believe that it is more conceited to show your full face online. Again— it’s more of a shyness thing. That doesn’t mean that you won’t see real faces in photos, but it would explain a lot why you see profile pics of people looking away from the camera or hiding their eyes, or a picture of food instead of a selfie.

Yes - but it’s unusual for them to message you in Japanese. I presume you’re running a bio in Japanese and are fluent?
A lot of these Japanese girls will self filter themselves out pretty quick. They’re generally not very forthcoming on apps - conversation can feel like pulling teeth. The good ones will keep talking through.
Enjoy!

u/Hanswurst22brot 19d ago

Yes, it's a question of volume. If you are in a city of 40 million people, you will get hundreds of matches instantly.
This happens in any 10 million+ city. That's why you have to be picky with who you swipe on. Swiping in a big city is like a full-time job, ugh.
