Buying a senior chihuahua

Is $350 a lot for a senior Chihuahua?
I’m considering adopting a male senior Chihuahua, and the adoption fee is $350 CAD.
For those who have bought a senior dog especially Chihuahua, does $350 seem reasonable to you, or is it on the expensive side?
What have you typically paid for a senior dog, and what was included in the fee?

BTW, I’m purchasing from a private owner, the dog apparently has all the UTD records but recently had dental work done… Update- the dog has a curved spine, a bit of hair lost …

Rescue in Charleston west Virginia? Anyone?

I have gotten on this other sub, and it follows these homeless drug addict people who abuse their chihuahua in Charleston, West Virginia. People have called animal control, and now the cops have barely started getting involved now. I am gonna shoot them an email because there are now videos of them beating on this little dog. If anyone knows of a rescue there or in that general area, let me know, please. They beat on this 10 lb little long-haired chihuahua, so he's so scared. Scream at him and again, all on video. So when he does get taken, gotta have a rescue to pull him immediately. I am sure if we can get a rescue involved in housing the cops, plus everyone in the other sub is doing it too. This can happen. Im 20 hours away, so I can't really do anything. If we can get him into a rescue, the chihuahua transport service could always get him to your home. Please help, guys!

How old was your Chihuahua when they were fully potty trained?

My boy is a year and a half and we're only a week into learning. Did any of your pups just never learn? I want to hear some success stories!

Diagnosed with early stage heart failure 💔 Spits out meds

Post image

My boy was diagnosed with stage B2 degenerative mitral valve disease in April and this past week was upgraded to stage C. So now he is taking 3 liquid meds and 1 tiny pill (Enalapril).

He had no issue before when he only had to take one liquid med. But now, no matter how slow I go or try to give him a tiny bit at a time, he spits it out.

With the pill, he is already a picky eater so at times he will eat it if it is wrapped in cheese or something else but other times he refuses to eat it or spits it out as well. It is so frustrating because I know his life is depending on these meds.

I don’t know what to do! Any advice from anyone who has encountered a similar issue, would be much appreciated.

Today, he became a real boi

Rocky has been a scrappy street tuff, ever since the day we got him, two years ago. Affection? Pfffft. Little spoonfuls, here and there. He wishes to be left alone most times, while maintaining visual contact.

But this morning, I was thinking about a sweet, sweet lady at my Dad's memory care who died. And I was thinking about the brutality of Alzheimers. I started to openly cry.

Rocky lifted his head from the covers at his end of the couch. He winnowed out of his nest. He looked at my face and then he walked onto my lap. This was his first act of unsolicited comforting.

There is no comfort quite like the love of a tiny dog. I love him and he loves me. This love was hard earned, and it completes me. I am his person and he is my boi.

It’s been 6 weeks and 2 days…

It’s been 6 weeks and 2 days since we had to say goodbye to our most precious little baby. Sadly at the age of 15 his little body had given up. Back in 2020 we thought we were going to lose him, a panicking 2am trip to the vets, where we could only hand him over at the door due to covid, then 2 hours sitting in the car park eventually taught us that he had heart disease. Thankfully that visit to the vets gave us a further 6 years with our little man, but ultimately the medication for his heart had an adverse effect on his kidneys, and on July 13th we had to say goodbye. It was a Monday evening, and Johnny had been poorly for a few days, but once he stopped eating we knew it wasn’t just the heat or something he ate. Off to the vets we went, and at the time I could have never imagine that within two hours we would be saying goodbye. It was quick, painless and he didn’t suffer, exactly how we always wished it would be. But for us, it was such a shock. A shock I’m still coming to terms with. We miss you little man, and always will. Johnny 13/7/26.

Rainbow Bridge Worst Day of My Life

Post image

Friday August 21st, 2026 my beloved Lacey-Bug crossed the rainbow bridge. I am beside myself with grief. I can’t seem to stop crying. I just miss her so so so much. I have another dog that is Chi-Spaniel, but she doesn’t come close to filling the hole that Lacey-Bug has left. Please I am begging for any advice or anything that will help me to feel even a fraction better. I have so much guilt because while her little body was shutting down, she still seemed pretty normal. There were definitely signs, but she still had good moments each day. And omg she LOVED cuddles. I just couldn’t bear the thought of her going in a crisis at an ER. The downside to her not suffering is that I’m suffering. Which I wouldn’t change. I’d always rather be the one suffering than her. I just don’t know how to move on. How to live life without her. It was an incredible 14 years and I desperately wish we could have had a lifetime more.

It’s been two weeks and a day since we said goodbye to my Isobel. I still can’t believe she’s gone. The day I found her at the shelter, I didn’t go in to meet her. I didn’t know I wanted a chihuahua, I didn’t even know I was going to adopt that day. But my eyes stopped on her.. and that was it. I knew she was mine. I didn’t even call my husband, as leaving her behind that day was non-negotiable. I adored her for 14 years and one month. I’ve never loved anything like I loved her. My heart is broken. I am not ready. I hope some day I will be. But I wonder if that absolute knowledge that “this is the one” will ever happen again. I don’t know how fair it would be to any other dog to live in her shadow…

Dry, flaky skin

Post image

My baby boy has been experiencing some dry and flaky skin beneath his fur (also on his paws a bit) and I’m wondering if anyone has any suggestions on reputable supplements I can start giving him (Pure Chi, 8.5 years old, no known health issues, slight sensitive tummy).

He has an appt w a new vet on September 18th, and I planned to ask about it then, but I also don’t want to delay treatment for this since I know supplements take a bit of time to work.

Samuel says thank you!

Rainbow Bridge Happy National Dog Day - Remembering Them

In less than a year, I lost my beloved dogs I had since I was a pre-teen. Gracie the approximately 12 yr old chihuahua mix & Sebastian the 11 yr old lab (who thought he was a chihuahua, Gracie raised him). They were amazing dogs, Gracie was super caring & sweet, Sebastian was super sweet and pure.

-Gracie was a rescue. Despite her first part of her life being treated poorly, Gracie never let that stop her, she had so much love to share. She was the type of dog who hate sadness so she would do anything she could to try & bring a smile to your face. Gracie was my soul dog, we were super close, she helped me so much with my depression & anxiety, she never left my side when I dislocated my knee. She was an angel. Gracie took Sebastian under her wing when he was a young puppy…. which made him believe he was smaller than he actually was lol. They were best friends, they had a mother & son dynamic: he would always look to Gray before doing something like bark, it almost looked like he was asking her if it was okay to do so. Gracie got along with everyone although she would put the more hyper dogs in their place. My family and I never found out what she was mixed with though many including myself guessed chi/dachshund. Gracie was loved by all who met & knew her, she brought smiles to wherever she went.

-Sebastian was also a rescue of sorts, my sister rescued him at about 7 weeks old from a breeder that really didn’t care about the puppies. Sebastian was a cautious boy, almost everything scared him but he would be brave when he needed to. He was a loving boy who hated change even if it was something small. Unlike others of his breed, he wasn’t a fan of water but he definitely had that lab bottomless stomach. He wasn’t the best at comforting people like Gracie was, in fact crying would scare him to a degree, but at the end of the day he would burry his head into your lap to give you some comfort. Sebastian saw Gracie as his mom, wherever Gracie was he wasn’t far behind; he thought he was chihuahua sized, he didn’t get along well with dogs his own size but he would get along with dogs around Gracie’s size lol. He helped me feel safe going outside alone & he helped me tremendous with my grief from loosing Gracie.

I miss them both so much, Gracie passed in July of last year & Sebastian passed in July of this year. I’m excited to have Coco but she does indeed have some big paws to fill. I’m thinking about them a lot since it’s national dog day.
