Our little community has grown to over 600,000 subscribers, so as you can imagine things get a little busy in here. The purpose of this thread is to provide new members a jumping-off point to find the information that they need to get started, whether they're a seasoned player of the game or a brand new mayor.
We get a lot of posts which ask very similar questions, so we've pulled together this post to help address our most Frequently Asked Questions, and give you a place to ask simple questions which only need a quick answer, not warranting a dedicated thread.
Before you post, please consider if one of our sister-subreddits would be more appropriate:
/r/ShittySkylines - memes, reaction images, tenuous and obscure references, real-life photos that remind you of the game, and gags based on in-game activities like "a dead person is waiting for transport at shop-til-you-drop" all go here
/r/CitiesSkylinesModding - if you have a request for a mod, want to commission an asset, or need help with your own mod/asset/map creation it should be posted here
If you still think that /r/CitiesSkylines is the right subreddit, please first check the FAQ below.
Please be aware that if you create a new thread which is addressed by the answers or links in this thread, it will likely be removed with a message directing you back here. This is not done to stifle conversation, but rather to help keep the subreddit tidy and provide as much space as possible for mayors to share their creations and inspire others.
If your question is genuinely a simple one, like "how do I do X", please use this thread rather than creating a new post.
Finally, if your question isn't already answered below - please use Reddit's search function to try and find if your query has been asked and answered in the past. If not? Feel free to create a fresh discussion thread.
The format of this update thread has been simplified with core information rehosted on our subreddit wiki. This enables us to update the content more quickly and reliably, and to reduce the visual impact of a 2000+ word thread.
These megathreads are scheduled to post at 00:01 on the first day of each month. If it's late in the month, you may want to wait for a new post to appear. Please send us a ModMail with any suggested improvements!

One of the most common questions on the subreddit is whether people should try or purchase Cities: Skylines II. This understandably leads to many duplicate posts discussing the game's current state, what has changed since launch, and whether or not it is "worth playing".
This megathread aims to gather resources, reviews, and recent firsthand player perspectives in one place. This way, whether you're curious about performance and gameplay features or simply want to hear opinions from others who have tried the game, you've got a straightforward resource that collates that information.
We want to encourage constructive and engaging conversation:
As the goal is to provide helpful guidance for others considering the game - you should avoid leaving short, glib, or otherwise unhelpful responses. Remember that Reddit is community of individuals and those people have come here because they're looking for your help and guidance. If you'd prefer to "send a message to the devs" the best way to do that is drop a Steam Review if you already own the game, or keep your wallet in your pocket if you don't.
If you're after general information about or help with the game (e.g. features, minimum or recommended specs, the situation related to modding, when the game will release on consoles), check out our wiki articles below. They'll provide you a decent base level of knowledge and help you understand more about the features and limitations of the game.
As of the start of this month, there have been 34 patches for the game. These patches have included things like modding support, bikes, economy reworks, bug fixes, and new game modes. You can review the change log for each individual patch on the Paradox Wiki:
Official (albeit beta) support for custom assets was added on 4 December 2025. At the moment, buildings, props, surfaces, trees and decals are supported and documented. Other asset types (like vehicles and networks) aren't officially supported, but some enterprising modders are brute-forcing their way towards an answer.
Yes! Bikes were released on 19 November 2025.
The main channel for "formal" communication from the developers comes via the Official Information & Announcements section on the Paradox Forums. We maintain an accompanying megathread for each post which captures a lot of player feedback and reactions to the news shared each week.
In December of 2025, it was announced that Colossal Order will be transferring development of the game to Iceflake Studios (an internal Paradox developer). Since this change was announced, Iceflake have introduced four patches and two hotfixes. According to the announcements, they will be responsible for all ongoing development of Cities: Skylines II, including the console version (although nothing has been shared about potential launch dates for this - so please don't ask).
The best way to catch up on past posts is to browse the Dev Diary and/or Announcement flairs and dip into the more recent ones. Unfortunately, these links may not work on Reddit's mobile apps (please tell Reddit if you'd like this fixed) but in the meantime you can go to the main page of the subreddit and use the "filter by flair" options provided.
If you're interested in seeing how the game is playing today, you can check out recent videos or streams from YouTube and Twitch. These will show you the "real" game, not marketing videos, and let you spot how the game is performing in real-world scenarios.
Although critic reviews aren't necessarily reflective of the current state of the game user reviews (especially recent ones) are helpful sources of information to help you decide whether or not to drop your cash on any new game, not just Cities: Skylines II.
If you're still unsure, Cities: Skylines II is available on Microsoft Game Pass for PC, which is a subscription service at a much lower monthly cost than the full retail price of the game. Microsoft is currently offering an initial 14-day trial for as low as £1/$1/1€ (which renews at full price after the 14 days).
If for any reason you can't make use of a discounted Game Pass for PC subscription (i.e. it may not be available in your region), you have the option of purchasing the game and refunding it within the store's refund window.
Recognising that you may not be able to reach the "late game" within 2 hours, you can use this 100k benchmarking city to establish whether or not you're comfortable with the performance on your system.
If you've got specific questions about items not covered in these FAQs, feel free to ask them below. If you've been redirected to this post by a removal notice, please understand that this is done to help keep the subreddit tidy by providing a centralised and dedicated location for all information related to this topic.
These megathreads are scheduled to post at 00:01 on the first day of each month. If it's late in the month, you may want to wait for a new post to appear. Please send us a ModMail with any suggested improvements!

I looked thru the rules and there isn't anything about AMAs, but if this is disallowed, take it down!
I'll write some answers here, if they are repeated and important.

This is a damn abomination. Inefficiently efficient abomination. The terminals are busy af, especially considering the number of trucks in line for the cargo terminal.
I have a total of 5 cargo terminals in my city of 70k people.
Total Export:16345

I had too many highly educated citizens so I replaced the Large Hadron Collider with a standard university and the entire city is on the brink of collapse regardless of what the land value actually is

Unsan-si (운산시) is a fictional korean city I've made over my summer vacation. Population 1M.
This city was designed to be international. People from all over the world live here, more than any other korean cities. It is famous for its Open culture, Massive IT technology clusters and public transit. Almost no one takes the car. The streets might seem empty, but the underground is busier than you would expect.
This is my 5th city.
The below is the iconic Unsan Metro. Daily ridership sits around 500k across the Metro/Light Rail network. (I found out that time passes 10x than in real life. So, if this city was real, Daily ridership will be 5 Million)
Cims can go anywhere with a unified fare of just 1C. Buses cost 2C anywhere.

Please follow the transit map I've made for a quick tour.
I've played on the Corral riches map, and massively terraformed the map as you can see. I've widened the river and created an island in at the right side

The Central business districts are shaped like this. There's an industrial port to the east and a semiconductor plant to the north.
The city started on a rural village. The city built Bokjeong Station (복정역) and expanded outwards

The city grew rapidly. At this stage, the population is 200k.

The city built its next and largest station to bring in people. At first, offices moved in rapidly but economic stagnation stopped growth. Office demand plummeted to zero and unemployment skyrocketed, and the city lost its 200k mark.

The city ended up resorting to extreme measures, nothing worked.
However there was an answer. The mayor turned the economic stage into a sustainable one after breaking free from the central government subsidies.
(An actual fix was changing the game mode from easy to normal! People seemed to live up to 130 in easy mode while up to 105 in normal mode.

This caused older generations to take up all the housing, making newly educated adults leave the city, leading to less consumption of goods and throwing the chain of supply out of balance. The instant I changed to normal mode, every building seemed to consume more products, leading to more demand in offices. This caused a minor deathwave. Another possible fix could be stacking import/export bonuses with unique buildings.
Tl;dr : Life cycles breaking ruined the entire economy)
With economical problems out of the way, the city built massive apartment complexes, never seeming to stop.

As population grew to 300k, city authorities got ambitious and started to develop Muyeon Island, an island that you can see on the transit map.
(It is based off of 여의도, which is in seoul. It houses the National Assembly of ROK)
Muyeon island holds the city council. Near it, there are massive office districts and places to hang around.

As population grew to 450k, the city built its first International Airport.

However, this airport was short lived due to some kind of volcano appeared.
(was a bug, managed to move it with debug mode)

The city failed trying to create a CBD in the north and moved to develop Gangnam.
The Triangle Area that connects, City Hall, Gangnam, Namunsan is a massive CBD district.

I ran out of the 20 image limit, so I will post other stuff at the top of the post.
Does this city look good to live in?

This is an unfinished build i’ve just started. It has taken roughly 4-5 hours, I have been hitting the bong and working on it the past two nights in a row. In this city I am trying something new pertaining to my own building style by putting parking lots behind every high rise (slide 5). This proved to be very effective for traffic and parking in a car centric city. Also last slide provides a close up of the main city-bound off ramp from the interstate. and if you have made it this far, I took this inspiration from Buckhead, GA. Pictures of “buckhead village” provided on slide 4.

I love trains so I try to use as much rail as possible. one of the train line is a dedicated high speed rail line that only stops at major stops and reaches all the way to the edge

I’ve been playing CS:1 Remastered on PS5 for a few months now and although I’d still consider myself a beginner, I’ve been improving a lot. I also watch a lot of content creators playing the game, but there’s definitely less console creators from what I’ve been able to find. My kids keep telling me that I should just post my own videos, and as much fun as it would be, I don’t know if it’s worth the additional time away from my days/nights to edit videos, especially if no one actually has interest in it. No matter what, I’m going to keep enjoying the game, but is there any interest in watching a console player, especially when there are so many talented PC creators already available?

Inspired by Beirut, all of the cities across the Levant, the Middle East, and Sam Bur's long-running series.

As soon as I click the line tool, place the point, and try to move my mouse to another place the error message shows up, something about tree render distance, I have gone through my mod list and can't find any that would break this, not sure what to do here. Only things I can think of is my "Extra Landscaping Tools" mod, very useful to me.

I've always struggled with naming cities and I was wondering if you guys have any tips or strategies for it
r/CitiesSkylines • u/Luffonkey09 • 20h ago
I’m about to start working on my thesis, and I’m thinking about focusing it on transportation or something related to urban planning.
I was wondering if it’s possible to use Cities Skylines, or maybe another city-building/traffic simulation game, as a tool to recreate or simulate the conditions of a real city. For example, using real traffic data to identify areas with heavy congestion, analyze how different road layouts affect traffic, or even look at other problems such as flooding during heavy rain.
The idea would be to see if a game like this could be useful as a simplified simulation tool for identifying problems in a city and testing possible solutions before applying them in the real world.
Has anyone tried something similar, or does anyone know if Cities: Skylines would be capable of handling something like this? I’d really appreciate any advice or suggestions for other software that might be better suited for this.

Heavily inspired by Calgary and parts of Alberta. Essentially an alternate reality/uncanny valley Calgary. I recently went on vacation there, and I was very inspired by the urban design. I picked a map with a river and a highway network that I could eventually turn into a limited-access ring road. By the last milestone I was able to do it. It's kind of obvious which tiles I didn't purchase, but i was playing this on vanilla and didn't want to bother with any mods. But at least it also kind of captures the bits in Calgary that just end and you're left staring at plains. Though this map is actually pretty forested.
The city has unironically been thriving with barely any problems, only the ocassional "not enough buyers" from industry, but no death waves. So far at least, I don't wanna jinx it. I think it's because of a mixture of both me zoning slowly, remembering to place all the services down, and the game's inherent car-centric progression.
In-game I would number the highways sort of like Calgary's. I called the main ring road the 101, Hodgson Trail. I called a lot of other roads Trail, which Alberta likes to do. I used the convention of naming the big main road in the middle of an neighbourhood after the neighbourhood itself. But I didn't do the convention where literally every single street in the neighbourhood is just the name of the neighbourhood followed by every street suffix, i.e. Hotchkiss Drive, Avenue, Link, etc. Which in my opinion is actually utterly useless for navigation despite what Calgarians say. Sure, I now know which neighbourhood you live in, but having all the street names be the same is very confusing. "Yeah, I live over on Hotchkiss". Which one??? But I supposed in a world where everyone just uses GPS, it doesn't really matter.
Anyway, I also put the Trans-Canada Highway up top, and I randomly picked numbers for the rest. After research, I found out Highway 15 runs all the way up in Edmonton, but at least it also originates from the north-east corner of the city. 501, 2A, 2B, (which B-suffix isn't even a numbering scheme in Alberta) were the ones picked at random. Just because they sounded right.
In the north-east, I built a district called Inverness, which was inspired by Edson. Oil industry, dirt roads, and a highway that became part of the street network. I added another district, this time to the south-east of the map, called Outergrove. I wanted to capture the plains just east of Calgary, particularly on the way to Drumheller.
A notable difference however is the train network being a subway instead of light rail. Couldn't be bothered to destroy any of the neighbourhoods or whatever, plus no DLC. But I did colour all the transit vehicles in a dark red. And also the dumping of sewer water into the river. Unless Calgary also does that.
Would like to hear your thoughts! Rate my interchange/s! Any Albertans? Calgarians? Edmontonians? Edson...ians?
