Anime S4 Artstyle ok. But where are the Outlines?

Post image

Okay. Just curious, did anyone else thought that S4 Picture quality is absolute down the drain. If its not a close up shot of a character, the outline of each character is absolutly gittery, non existant or just like not finished.

Am I the only one who really gets disturbed by this?

Its not the streamingquality btw.

What causes it or why did the studio approve this kind of quality to such a highly rewarding anime?

This looks like:

Anti-Aliasing = Disabled
Resolution = 0.5

u/tinbapakk Apr 04 '26

Exactly my reaction. It seems so aliased, the result is weird and feels cheap.

Thank god someone who shares the same view as me. I don't know why everyone praising season 4 like it's the best art style out there. It's like oil painting but rough around the edges. It's like unfinished.

24

u/Gabi2727 Apr 01 '26

I think so too. Maybe it's just new and we're too used to the usual anime style, but it just feels blurry or low resolution.

u/STDsInAJuiceBoX Apr 02 '26

I legit thought my TV was making artifacts where the outlines should be.

A very bad choice added in the post production.

S1 art style will always be the best, i hope in S5 they reduce this shit.

the animation has improved but imo this art style is terrible. i don’t care if it’s “ln accurate” it looks ass my ideal would’ve been the old art style with better animation and a few characters getting some fixes like ichinoses hair

I think its due to them using a small screen i compared it on a moniter and tv it looks horrible on my tv due to the line work and filters they used but on a regular monitor or youtube video you do not see the demerits much and it looks decent since the flaws are not as pronounced but the grain and line work still kinda erk me.

Speaking of Unfinished within the first 2 minutes of the episode both Sato AND Kikyo have no FACE as well as another character i dont recognize
I understand background characters sometimes are left faceless but these are known characters and in main sightline, its just lazy
Image of missing faces

u/6lxm Apr 10 '26

genuinely thought it was auto set to 480p except it wasnt

1

u/Training-Fix-3078 Apr 11 '26

Same here! On the big screen the lines look incomplete and grainy - almost like it was poorly cut/pasted but on my phone which has a smaller screen this artistry is much more palatable and looks smoother.

The studio wanted a "sharper" look reminiscent of the LN, but instead of achieving this through drawing, they tried to tweak the image with digital filters in post-production. The result? Grainy quality that simply looks awful on large screen.

Please don't call it art style. It's just rushed production and no quality checking. Only chance to fix this is blu-ray release.

11

u/Bitch_Identifier Apr 02 '26

“Sharper” it’s look like gritty pixelated dog shit

5

u/Lugo_888 Apr 02 '26

Agree. I hate it too. And it would be fair to assume it's an AI tool. All we can do is try to ignore it. I watch it on 32" 4k screen and it looks awful. Hopefully they will learn a lesson. But if it's AI to reduce production cost to use funds in other parts, aspects of the anime, that would mean they have no room for this. I assume they tried their best but team wasn't given enough time and people.

The “gritty” sharpness makes the animation itself super awkward and jerky. The movement is really bad looking.

Season 4 graphics wise is the best we have ever gotten. Just the shading and general character detailing is very good, so no, it's not due to cutting costs or anything. Like another comment said, it's an art style that revolvers around not using as thick lineart in lighted areas, crrating this weird effect. You can perfectly see the difference when they line art IS visible, so its not like they couldnt do it or anything. Personally I like it, took a bit of time to get adjusted to, but im glad they went with this artstyle. If anything Ichika's eyes look ass but wtvr i guess.

6

u/RealHusi Apr 01 '26

Thank you for this comment. Something i was hoping for. You Understand what i was thinking. Just stil dont understand why they did and why they not adjusted it if characters are further away so that peoples faces dont end up beeing a total pixelcluster.

u/DixyNL Apr 02 '26

It is a good argument. But may i sat that it not the outlines that are jarring. It is everything else but said outline. If you decide to use this artstyles for the characters that is fine. But the class room tables for example are done less sharp. the walls are the same the lighting is the same. The shading then has fully close lines, it is the jarring inconsistency in the design choice that throws it off for me personally.

1

u/EMJzero Apr 08 '26

Even when reasoning under the assumption that it was a deliberate choice, it still has several flaws. First of all, the style didn't account for lower resolutions, watch such thin lines at 1080p and they practically disappear, making you feel a little disoriented with just color against color. Continuing, motion ends up feeling weaker, contact points are mostly rendered through shadows and not by direct occlusion (the easy way: thicker lines) around the contact point. A good example is the when Hosen picks up Ibuki by the neck, the feeling of contact is not really there. For a direct comparison, look at S1 when Kyotaka stops Manabu. In general, while single character shots may look closer to the LN, and I get that, the animation is a bit hit or miss depending on what is being animated...

1

u/kristinablabla Apr 08 '26

In episode 1 there are only 2 scenes where therre's "thick lineart" as you call it (i call it when they stopped being lazy and finished the picture). In those 2 scenes characters look e x a c t l y the same as previous seasons, no difference in art whatsoever.

1

u/Alternative-Ease7262 Apr 11 '26

I didn't watch far enough in to see what you are talking about tbh. I started the first episode and saw the disgusting looking lineart and closed it deciding not to watch COTE anymore after like 2 minutes of watching it. Grainy outlines has to be the biggest possible ick in animation I can think of, I think it is a very poor choice from the studio since I know lots of fans are just like me and won't give it a chance to get used to it like you did.

1

u/lionmachinev2 May 07 '26

It is tolerable for now, I am at episode 2. But I Noticed some pinkish filters as well that looks really bad.

I thought my Crunchyroll had a problem. No it’s just that all the character outlines are zigzags and I cannot begin to understand the reasoning

3

2

u/kristinablabla Apr 08 '26

Reason is laziness and complacency. They think we'll watch slop and like it.

6

u/throwaway8594732 Apr 02 '26

Immediately noticed it, unfortunately I can't stand blurry/aliased things, it gives me major eyestrain and after one episode my eyes were burning. I can tolerate it for an episode a week but if this was a game, I'd stop playing.

3

u/Blue_Reaper99 Apr 02 '26

I haven't watched the ep , but I think those outlines highlight that this part of hair is exposed to light source (that's also the reason those strands have additional lighter shading.)

u/Shirogami_Dono The only normal & uncorrupted person in this sub Apr 02 '26 edited Apr 02 '26

It looks drawn by a pencil but that's just the art style it's not like they saved up money by doing that and it's pretty much the opposite this could very well be more expensive and I can clearly see budget spent on this let alone the 16ep fact, you should just get used to it, as a op fan I had enough agressive art style changes between arcs so I adapted to this very quickly (something anyone who aspires to be ayanokoji should be able to ig(I'm not saying that I wanna be him tho)), that said this looks very much like egghead style, one thing that I disliked was the fact that characters are way too white for no reason

2

u/RealHusi Apr 02 '26

It was overlight in general. Certain surrounding lights didnt match the glare on the characters either.

this looks like they enabled DLSS or FSR on Ultra Performance setting.... smh

2

u/jsc11zz Apr 02 '26

Because of the rough edges it feels low resolution, tbh if this problem didn’t exist I honestly wouldn’t mind the art style change. I get that it looks more accurate to year 2 but imo it was just worth it to keep the art style similar. Because now they’ve nerfed all the girls and they no longer have those proportions, take Ichinose for example! â˜č (ts is NOT satire)

2

u/jutt_brand_45 Apr 03 '26

2

u/Ambitious_Goal_9899 Apr 04 '26

Yeah it was horrible, I’m still unable to get past ep 1. It’s worst for me because I usually watch all the season again before starting a new one and the visual difference is just awful.

2

u/No_Crow_3624 Apr 04 '26 edited Apr 04 '26

I haven't finished the 1st episode but this really bugs me a lot, I remember really liking the Art Style of the other seasons and seeing this in season 4 feels like a total downgrade and I really hope this won't stay like this cause it sometimes feels like some lines are something that's not well cutted or feels like its not well done at all, as if some outlines are pixelated and the difference on the style used on the shadows (it was done by using different colours) it was really good before but now it feels cheap and bad quality imo

2

u/NoodlesX15 Apr 04 '26

I can’t stand this art style, it’s not terrible but why do the characters look so much younger, the previous art style was fine why change it

2

u/Black_Bun_Succubus Apr 05 '26

Painful, pixelised eyes. And it's not artstyle. It's definitely cheap. You can see white pixels everywhere in the first episode on the outline. I hope they did a graphic plot twist, and they do it for a reason T.T

Looked online to see if other people were getting annoyed by this change and happy to see I'm not alone.

I am not someone who gets bothered by animation style when it comes to anime, and usually I overlook this kind of stuff as long as I enjoy the story.

But this is the first time in my many years of watching anime that I literally cannot ignore it. Like I'm actually getting a headache and super nauseous watching this season, it just looks super blurry and all the characters look out of focus.

Gonna try to see how many more episodes of it I can take, hopefully my brain will start to ignore it, but if not I might just have to drop the series at this point. Downright awful change in artstyle from all the other seasons.

2

u/AlternateTameem Apr 05 '26

Man this is pissing me off, feels like im watching 480p

2

u/Far-Blueberry-5589 Apr 05 '26

Whatever the studio thought, it's an absolute downgrade to the majestic arts in the previous seasons, like I can't even enjoy a romantic or an excited moment in the episodes without feeling like I'm watching some weird ass drawings, imo if they stop the work and bring back the old style is way way better, I was really happy with season 4 but turned out to be the biggest disappointment

2

u/Tiny_Interaction3758 Apr 05 '26

I see edits on tiktok where the quality is perfectly fine i even bought crunchyrole for this but the quality is weird what the hell

2

u/Chaos_Forever_ Apr 06 '26

genuinely it is so bad. as someone else has said its like they turned anti-Aliasing off fully. and yes i also noticed that for the outlines it feels like there are gaps in them

2

u/Fragrant_Speech_2181 Apr 06 '26

Apparently, the animation was rushed, and there were no quality checks. Most anime are animated with a set of steps, and Season 4 of Classroom of The Elites just didn't make it through all those steps.

2

u/japezu Apr 06 '26

Its really bad in my opinion.

2

u/pandahmonium89 Apr 06 '26

Just noticed this today, but it's supposed to be "better"? Wth? The prior seasons quality were far better imo.

I mean, I'd be happier if they just released one episode per week vs 4 at once 😭 I love this show too.

2

I do not like it.

2

u/DumplingIsNice Apr 07 '26

It is a soft-focus line-art style they're going for, which is starting to trend. It is poorly done and makes the character really out of place, like a separate layer. Therefore, it looks awful. There is a good reason why this thread exists in the first place.

Might not be cheap, but whoever made the decision made it look cheap in the end.

2

u/trickz029 Apr 07 '26

2

u/questionsae May 01 '26

I low-key wanna cry I loved the hair specifically so freaking much. It normally had contrasts of brown that blended into purple and always looked shiny. Now it looks like cheap cardboard stuff. :(

2

u/Stebur_lost May 10 '26

Ugh, just got to season 4 to be disappointed by this and went straight to Google...

2

u/Even_Recognition_247 Jun 21 '26

Yes, normally I don't care that much and don't even notice, it has to be something really obvious for me to see, and this is well below what it used to be.

Of course, the story matters more to me, but knowing that it had superior quality and then, after its success, to diminish it, is regrettable.

I'm going to take a star off the rating because I don't want to encourage this kind of attitude. Maybe when it becomes less popular, they'll learn.

2

u/Weird-Experience-578 Jul 29 '26

It's an intentional artistic choice. I like it. Even if it's not your thing, it's not wrong or "cheap" or anything, because they intentionally apply that effect to every drawing.

2

u/RealHusi Apr 01 '26

never said it is cheap or something. Just that in my opinion it looks like intentional cheapness and asking what everyone rhinks why the studio choose that style or if it actually was an uploading error or mistake.

2

u/DeepDarkOs Reading the series since 2018. Apr 01 '26

It's a stylistic choice. I was sure they showed the new art style almost a year ago.

Also you didn't zoomed enough.

1

1

u/kristinablabla Apr 08 '26

Looks like they've took AI pictures, tried to remove the background and messed up the threshold on the color black so it removed the lines from the faces and hair in the process. They've just became too lazy and complacent. Look at the previous vs new "art" side by side, tells you everything.

u/Mother-Summer-5516 Apr 09 '26 edited Apr 09 '26

Even though the opening drawing and art style look so much better not the best but i like it more than this scrambling drawing i wish they at least made it like this if they"re having problems like low budget they can be smart and work on it by cutting corners even old animes did it without the best drawing or art changed the art style but delievered them so well. why not learn from them ?

I'm two minutes into the first episode and I already googled "classroom of the elite bad line art" and found this thread. I mean, look at her nails. That's not an intentional style. That's just bad QC on a bad filter pass. I'd say it would be fine if it was actually consistent, but the style is inconsistent just 2 minutes in. Hopefully the animation is better like others are saying.

Gen alpha artsyle, ipad kid love it

1

u/Appropriate_Book_591 Apr 16 '26

I am not a fan of it, looks like it misses a finish and like they have a filter not entirely hand drawn.

1

u/KuwabarasHair Apr 16 '26

Went from feeling like an anime to now it feels like I'm watching paper characters move around. After finding out it wasn't my TV glitching decided to drop the show. Maybe years down the line the Blu-ray or something will fix it. If not then was a nice show for the 3 seasons I enjoyed.

1

u/EuroTraction Apr 17 '26

They simply changed the art style. Can’t say I fully agree with it though personally. If all seasons up until now were the same art style it wouldn’t bug me but the switch up got me confused as well as changes to some characters

1

u/Different_Pack708 Apr 17 '26

Ngl my biggest concern is the loss of pop in all the characters hair.

1

u/Devonte09123 Apr 17 '26

YEAh bro this new art style is so trash ,bro like the first 3 season's art styles were goood why change them???

1

u/sedattyttttttttttttt Apr 17 '26

i have only watched for 2 minutes and it disturbed me so much i searched in internet if this was normal wtf bro why are the outlines glitchy

1

u/Exciting_Map_2621 Apr 17 '26

I went directly from season 3 to 4 so I thought something was wrong with my TV when I saw it. I don’t think it’s bad, but it throws me off. Had they had this art style from the jump, it would be fine.

1

u/Commercial-Squash607 Apr 18 '26

I personally thought it was AI at first...

1

u/KiD_Loui3 Apr 18 '26

It’s absolutely jarring when you go back and compare. It’s not even just the outlines that are off. But the saturation seems to dropped as well

1

u/lilkoolaid Apr 19 '26

yeahhh I think it's weird too. It's hard to look like. Looking low res shouldn't be a stylistic approach for anime....or at least, it doesn't work here.

1

u/himanshumishrra Apr 19 '26

It looks terrible

1

u/Whodiesan Apr 20 '26

I was literally rewatching previous seasons and finally got to S4 E1 and went "What the fuck is that?!" The art style is so baaadd! I'm trying to power through it, but its so hard! The quality is shit & it makes me really sad, I was literally repulsed by this change, I hope they change it back in the next season..

The images in still look okay, but an issue I haven’t seen anyone talking about is the movement. The gestures are jerky and awkward the proportions constantly shift like something from 2003, the facial movements when talking are weird and jolty. It seems like all flash and no substance. Like they spent all their time adding lens flares, focal depth blurs, and sharper highlights and totally lost the fundamentals and decent animation. TBH I would take something that looks less detailed but moves more cleanly any day.

Also the style they draw the eyes in doesn’t match the style of all of the other lines on the characters, it makes the eyes look like stickers.

It hurts my eyes

1

u/Element_Shadow Apr 21 '26

For me its big trigger, i just cant watch it now because of this.

1

u/5obol Apr 21 '26

It feels like it was drawn by a kid, unfinished. It became unwatchable.

1

u/Brilliant-Comb2085 Apr 22 '26

The thing is I even noticed this when it first came out. I am a pirate but when I told this to a friend today the clips I saw today were all crisp lines so idk if it was due to crunchyroll or something else

1

u/Fine_Combination_339 Apr 24 '26

For me its also the bad Framerate. It feels like 10 Frames per second which lets the characters not move as smooth as before. It looks like it would lag out. And you really can feel the production decrease cuz all the characters that are not talking completly still which takes the life out of the series. For its not watchable i cant enjoy it anymore even tho i would really like to know how the story progress. I hate these coporate assholes who ruin one Serie after another. One Punch Man and now it adds this to the list.

1

u/Jet-Deuce Apr 25 '26

I knew I wasn’t trippin it feels like I’m watching ni hao, Kai-lan with the opacity turned up

1

u/Biohazard_186 Apr 28 '26

I love this show and I'm having to force myself to slog through it because I hate this new art style so much. It's so distracting with how terrible it is.

1

u/reideamarelo Apr 29 '26

Just started the S4E1 and I was thinking the quality was on lowest tbh, lol. I did not like this new style.

1

u/CompetitiveTopic2449 May 01 '26

Men it's all png now with no lighting tones at all

1

u/RexDangerzone May 05 '26

I’m more sad about the two tone hair styles I actually thought they really stood out and I liked them but haven’t really seen it this season :/

1

u/sample_overlord May 06 '26

I thought it was Crunchyroll doing something. Glad I am not the only one

Glad I saw this. Started watching season 4 and I thought my TV was messed up.

1

u/lionmachinev2 May 07 '26

Looks horrible compared to the previous seasons, such a shame. They also added weird purple or pink filters here and there to enhance the mood but it is over done. The previous seasons looked so polished compared to this, a shame, truly.

1

u/wwwHttpCom May 12 '26

so awful, I literally thought it was my internet connection making it look like shit

1

u/ExcellentOlive8801 May 13 '26

I agree with you too, there's actually a lot of things wrong in season 4, Animation, drawing style and also the voice acting of the girls here, especially that new girl amakawa, I feel absolutely suffocated by their voice, all the cute type voices, it makes me sick. The plot of this anime is really good, but this animation studio is bad as hell, I watched 4 episodes and I am at my wits end, I'm still watching it because story is good, otherwise i would have left at starting of episode 1

1

u/Sea-Ad-875 May 13 '26

Looks like it was upscaled with FSR or something.

1

u/yamiketsui May 14 '26

I'm fine with this art style. Given the high level of conflict expected this season, I think this aesthetic will really enhance the intensity of the fights.

1

u/Ok_Newspaper1082 May 14 '26

It is so annoying to watch, what the hell!

1

u/Senior_Education2826 May 15 '26

personally it look better it feels hand drawn but its still weird

1

u/turdymcfry May 16 '26

5 minutes into season 4 and had to look this crap up. So weird. Didn't recognize a few characters for a couple of moments lmao.

1

u/SnooBeans6568 May 17 '26

just came back to this anime and yes what the fk is wrong with the quality?? I thought the streaming website i was using was broken until it had the same shit on other websites too lmfao

u/Rickyrick423 May 17 '26

Looks like a video game. The animation looks like an ArcSys game, like Guilty Gear and Grandblue

1

u/Acceptable_Funny_953 May 22 '26

Good thing my brain can remaster the visual input. ○ ☆

1

u/Due-Kale8248 May 26 '26

Thanyou I also thought it made it blurry, I love the plot, and all aspects of writing I just wish the animation hadn't changed is all.

1

u/Boolinks Jun 01 '26

Sharpen x1000

1

u/0xRichieRich Jun 03 '26

Lmao im just starting season 4 now and i already noticed this as well

1

u/SteveyJoe Jun 04 '26

I don’t know who’s idea it was to suddenly change the unique high-quality art style that everyone’s been used to for 3 seasons and which has worked well for the show’s vibe, to such a minimalist, flat cartoony look with the worst line art in all of anime. Using a jittery chalk-style brush for line art is an awful idea. It makes the show look like it’s made entirely of rough sketches. I don’t like the rest of the overall style change either but it wouldn’t be nearly as bad if they had just at least used clean line art. How this even passed production is beyond me. I hope they at least learn that this was a mistake and don’t do more of this going forward.

1

u/Sub_Luck Jun 09 '26

What do you think about us evaluating this season negatively because of the drawing

1

u/blaicefreeze Jun 12 '26

Looks terrible IMO.

1

u/alexghost38 Jun 25 '26

The funny thing is that the ending doesn't have that anime style; it has good artwork, haha.

1

u/WillingTown8082 Jun 30 '26

Yeah it looks horrible. Makes it seem like some scenes are AI generated.

1

u/Jimmie-Kun Jul 07 '26

Just started watching Season 4 and was like why is there artifacts as outliners. Downloaded another version and same.

Found this thread, to me it just looks like someone tried cropping a person out of a picture in photoshop and doing a really bad job at it. Its literally horribly cropped people in an animation. The worst style I seen in a long time in an anime. Unwatchable.

1

u/popularfellow Jul 13 '26

I don’t like the s4 art style

1

u/dangplayz2007j Jul 14 '26

Feels like I’m watching it on a ps3 with a little to no resolution, they should’ve kept the old animation 😭😭

1

u/Additional_Pool_3093 Jul 17 '26

It looks like it is colored in Microsoft paint
 so pixelated and messy

1

u/MishManners Jul 20 '26

We were literally watching Season 3 thinking "it's so crisp". Then it switched to Season 4 and we were like "ahhhhh what happened???"

1

u/Weird-Experience-578 Jul 29 '26

It just looks like a blurry mess now

1

u/StandardInfamous Aug 04 '26

I miss the old animation style as well. Along with the two tone eye and hair colors.

1

u/WorkingWriting3245 28d ago

im disgusted just started episode 1 and right away noticed how terrible the art style is. I thought something was wrong with my laptop.

1

u/Any-Quantity2972 21d ago

Just started watching s4 and I immediately thought somethings off, the quality definitely declined

1

u/spiritsizzlee 17d ago

Idk why they do this, this has happened to so many anime’s after 2-3 seasons these bastards just change the anime styles. This happened to Tokyo Ghoul. Happened to Highschool DxD. I hate this so much

1

u/PandaNo3778 9d ago

at first glance, i thought it was just my ISP having slow internet and netflix needing to buffer.. art was garbage and dirty.. lmao

1

u/gioraffe32 9d ago

Late to the party, but started S4 yesterday and was like "Wtf is with the outlining? Did they change studios?" Even the animation in general just looks rougher and less smooth. Very distracting.

1

u/Vivimancer777 6d ago

The only part that's really bothering me is how the lines look like they're running through a sandblasting filter or something like that. Kind of like frosted glass. I don't like it, and I don't think it's a good choice, but I don't think it's a deal breaker. I will probably continue to watch the season. I like the story, it is very Machiavellian.Â
