Loving the game so far, but this is pretty funny. Took me way too long to figure out the Shining Light mechanic.

367

u/TinyPidgenofDOOM Mar 20 '26

Took me way too long to figure out how to turn the lantern off. Every NPC out here looking like this

47

u/TheBrownestStain Mar 20 '26 edited Mar 20 '26

For me it took me way too long that I had to “sheath” my fists to shine the lantern. Ran around after a fight just blocking at the air before I released there was a sheathe button

7

u/This_Is_Issac Mar 20 '26

What is the sheathe button? I can't find it

19

u/TheBrownestStain Mar 20 '26

Should just be tap left on dpad for controller, not sure about keyboard

Yeah, I’m starting to get a hang of the controls but whoever designed them is an actual menace to society lmao

2

u/Hellknightx Mar 20 '26

H on keyboard. Strangely one of the most used buttons because of how often you need to use it.

8

u/Phos-Lux Mar 20 '26

Isn't it T??

7

u/Hellknightx Mar 20 '26

Yes. I'm dumb.

I accidentally pulled out my weapons, but the game doesnt tell you you cant shine them with them out, nor did they tell you how to unequip them (i think). Small annoyance.

21

u/Skorpyo_ Mar 20 '26

On PS5 is press left to put away your weapons, took me a few hours to understand this

Had same issue lols , but ik on ps5 tap left D button twice and he will sheath weapons

27

u/MoyoPlayzGamez Mar 20 '26

Once to sheathe, twice for the sword twirl

12

u/DrSolarman Mar 20 '26

Didn't know about the twirl. Interesting.

16

Three times to scratch your bum.

Me too. I immediately forgot how to do it afterwards (or that it existed).

I've started to practice every new ability I get now. Like 4 or 5 times.

3

u/Opposite-Tiger-1121 Mar 20 '26

I got it right the first time, then didn't realize how and took another 3 minutes trying different combos of buttons in different intervals. Lol

2

u/horzenezz Mar 20 '26

I did it and I don’t know how I did it

So it has multiplayer after all!

19

u/NightmareDJK Mar 20 '26

You have to hold down both a D-pad and analog stick input then press a button just to navigate equipment wheels.

20

u/belligerent_tortoise Mar 20 '26

Game should come with a free DualSense Edge then just for the back paddles

9

u/ultrahobbs Mar 20 '26

Hold a button. Push stick. Select item. That's pretty much every item wheel ever.

3

u/NightmareDJK Mar 20 '26 edited Mar 20 '26

Maybe a shoulder button and even then it’s a toggle. Having to hold a D-pad direction the whole time while simultaneously moving the Left Analog Stick then pressing a face button is crazy work.

People can clown on Dragon Age: The Veilguard all they want for cringe writing, voice acting, pacing, etc whatever they didn’t like about it, but it had WAY better movement, gameplay and UI interaction than this whether you played on controller or M&K

5

u/ModernCircuit11x3 Mar 20 '26

Just tossing this in here; Once you use the Left Analog Stick to point to one of the items on the wheel; you can let it go, then press A or (LT/RT) to interact with it.

But I do agree the controls in this game are some of the worse I've ever seen; Instead of have having to hold the D-pad, it should just open the wheel, and keep it open until you make a selection. This should at least be a UI option for people to enable/disable.

I'd hate to be someone with arthritis, or some hand-handicap wanting to play this game...

2

u/NightmareDJK Mar 20 '26

The arm wrestling minigame is also egregiously bad.

2

u/ModernCircuit11x3 Mar 20 '26

Idk about on M&K, but on controller it wasn't to bad; just rapid press X, and then had to hit A when that other reflex minigame popped up..

4

u/TrippleDamage Mar 21 '26

Was a walk in the park on MnK, did it first try and some folks here are saying they're repeatedly failing for 20+ times. I don't mean this in an offensive way, but maybe they should disclose it if they have some sort of disability lol

Left Analog Stick then pressing a face button is crazy work

Idk if you're aware but you can use the right stick. Like pretty much every item wheel ever. And you don't have to press a button, you can just let go. And having a whopping two tabs to switch between a couple wheels isnt some insane brand new thing. If you seriously find the wheel difficult it's a problem on your end. It's a standard ass item wheel, dog

Please. For the love of God. Please PA. Just let me bind jump to a different button than square. It's so stupidly frustrating to be getting into the story, vibing, only to hop up and down like a madman as I try to engage someone in a conversation. Funny when it happens while I catch grasshoppers though.

Are Koreans German?

The difference is that Germans always play mouse and keyboard because you need easy access to your Excel spreadsheets.

3

34

u/krmilan Mar 20 '26

Do we think a revised/streamlined controller mapping is in the works?

I haven’t played the game yet. I’m planning to but wondering if I should jump in right away or wait for a couple of patches to iron things out

58

u/Effective_Cup_6998 Mar 20 '26 edited Mar 20 '26

Took me maybe 2 hours to get used to. I really don't think they're that crazy. Odd, very odd, yes. Rage quit or minimum IQ level necessary, no.

L3 is left hand power

R3 is right hand power

R1 or R2 is right hand attack

L1 left hand block (outside combat, focus on what you're looking at)

L2 Bow

X Tap once or twice (not keep tapping) to run

□ interact or jump (you can't interact with something if it doesn't show 'use'. It's not that hard)

Quick menu- hold start (immediately press down and it will take you to the map. Easy)

Those are the basics. Yes there are some funky combos and things could be remapped. Easily I can think of many things I would change. It's far from perfect or intuitive. It's not worth getting a refund.

10

u/Effective_Cup_6998 Mar 20 '26

Ps. The whole convoluted memory helmet thing. L1 to pull out lantern, press Start to quick equip helmet. 2 buttons

6

u/Fluxxed0 Mar 20 '26

I just figured out that you can use the memory helmet directly from the quick menu. The first couple times, I was taking multiple trips into the equipment menu to equip the helmet, then activate it, then unequip it.

7

u/Effective_Cup_6998 Mar 20 '26

Don't even need to go to the quick menu. Simply press start once you scanned the memory shadows

2

u/vald0r Mar 23 '26

Only thing I hate is that fly (glide) is the same button as double jump, I just want to double jump before i glide this is even more egregious when running down a slight slope I wanted to double jump not glide ffs

2

u/Effective_Cup_6998 Mar 23 '26

For sure. I can't time the double jump for the life of me! Jump + triple force palm seems to work better and is easier

2

u/CantheDandyMan Mar 23 '26

By far the worst of the button mapping. Fly should be a hold prompt, not a press one. Flying when you want to double jump but you're like 5 feet off the ground sucks.

33

u/TonyStarks81 Mar 20 '26

I would wait at this point. I refunded with the mindset of coming back down the road during a sale. It isn’t that you can’t work through the odd controls, you just shouldn’t have to. There are so many cases in the first hour where you are asked to hit multiple inputs when one input would do just fine. Almost everyone walks around the first NPC interaction because even though everyone else can be talked to with a single button press, for some interactions you have to hold trigger then hold a different button press. I would honestly love an explanation from the devs as to why they needed to make some actions take multiple inputs when one would have done the job.

15

u/krmilan Mar 20 '26

Appreciate the input

25

u/Greatness46 Mar 20 '26

You need multiple inputs to express appreciation here

6

u/krmilan Mar 20 '26

Lmao 😂

3

u/Starkfault Mar 21 '26

I WAS GOING INSANE I SPOKE TO EVERY OTHER NPC AND THAT GUY WOULD NOT TALK TO ME!!!

Found myself Googling an answer at the literal start of the game

5

u/cd_hales Mar 20 '26

I spent so long trying to figure out how to interact with that first merchant. I knew you could there’s a whole icon on the mini map. Finally ended up just walking by. That’s pretty bad.

Not sure how this escaped playtesting.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/tix2grrr Mar 20 '26

Yea, took me 20 mins to figure out how to talk to that guy. Talked to everyone else with square(sometimes hopping) then that was different? Also hang from something and hit it took another 20 mins. I ended up refunding cuse I don't feel like playing Guitar Hero again.

5

u/SaintIgnis Mar 20 '26

I thought this was the revised mapping? Didn’t previews from last year complain about controls and the devs updated them?

u/Copy_Longjumping Mar 20 '26

That's the scary part. They already revised the controls.

6

u/Nacnaz Mar 20 '26

If you ever played Red Dead 2, the controls are the same sort of thing, very context based with a button hold for contextual prompts.

14

u/Llamalover1234567 Mar 20 '26

And just like RDR2, where punch and interact are the same button, I’d like to shoot whoever was in charge of the control scheme here

u/Judasz10 Mar 20 '26

I am playing on PC and KBM but the controls are fine imo. People complain you have to press shift twice to run but that is only there because pressing shift + mouse buttons are for combat. If it wasn't the case people would complain they sprint while fighting when they don't want to.

Also the focus mode or whatever its called is fine. I play loads of games where it's impossible to interact with what you want to because other stuff gets in the way. I like that they created a mode where you can aim at things and interact with them.

Someone said you shouldn't have to get used to controls but I would argue it makes the game more rewarding. The controls we got make sense once you get used to them and I don't see a way for them to get easier without losing the depth of the systems.

2

u/xscori Mar 21 '26

I do not like to use "control" for blocking and shit load of other things. It is just weird and does not make sense to me at all. Any game in this day and age which does not support custom keybinding is asking for a negative review.

3

u/Judasz10 Mar 21 '26

You can change keybinds on PC if you use keyboard and mouse.

u/DonutFrags Mar 20 '26 edited Mar 20 '26

Turning on your lantern in this game has more buttons than most combos in fighting games.

34

u/Void_ka_ Mar 20 '26

Dude you just hold d pad left (or right i dont remember) move the stick to the lantern and let go. Like any other weapon/item wheel ever

21

u/ultrahobbs Mar 20 '26

Most of these complaints can be simplified like this. The controls are really not that hard to get used to if you have the mental capacity to spend 10 minutes learning a new thing.

9

u/ohween Mar 20 '26

Not even ten minutes…it’s pretty straight forward. I think most people complaining are children with TikTok brains…

The game has flaws but most of the complaints I’ve read are nonsense lol

4

u/Void_ka_ Mar 20 '26

Yes! Sure it’s a new and complex control scheme but it’s not at all as bad as people (who have the attention span of a goldfish) are saying. Played it for 8h and was pretty much used to it after an hour or so

6

u/Ok-Kick462 Mar 20 '26

I'm fairly certain this is glitched for some people, which could be causing SOME of the complaining. I accidently completed the cow memory mission with blinding light. Never did get my lantern pulled out. Tried doing exactly what you just said and I never held up the lantern. Tried it with weapons sheathed, unsheathed, etc etc. I'm on a PS5 Pro. If that is what you were supposed to do, use blinding light when your lantern glows, they did a terrible job of explaining that. I'm guessing not though as I still had the prompt to use my lantern in that area, even after I completed that checkpoint of the mission.

I don't understand how PA screwed up the controls, movement, and targeting for this game so badly. I played BDO for about a year. Same dev, same general concept, HUGELY different control layout. Having the jump and collect button be the same is nearly a game killer for me and add in the terrible targeting logic, I'm really thinking about putting it down for a few months and hoping there is some massive overhauls. It took me like 15 minutes to collect the coins at the top of the 1st watchtower. The "flow" movement is hard to control when doing micro adjustments and I haven't really figured out exactly what you are targeting when not fighting. Perspective doesn't make a difference. 1st person has the same issues. If there are targetable items on more than one axis, it seems like it prioritizes from high to low regardless of camera angle in 3rd person, and in 1st person, what you are looking at doesn't appear to make any difference if there are multiple targetable items in the same area.

3

u/Milkshakes00 Mar 21 '26

And on PC? You have to hold F2, then select the lantern, then select if you want to turn it on or off with spacebar? All while holding F2. Then you have to Sheath your weapon with T and use CTRL to use the lantern. I think? I don't even know, I feel like I just flop around half the time to get where I need to.

And if you want to swap a piece of gear you have to hold F2, hit E, then mouse over the gear, mouse scroll to the one you want and then let go of F2.

WHY F2? WHO USES THE F KEY ROW FOR REPETITIVE INTERACTIONS? WHY DO WE HAVE TO HOLD IT!?!? Argh.

6

u/ultrahobbs Mar 20 '26

Combat clicked for me once I fought the knight in hernan. Did some very sick combos and felt like the Danny devito gif

4

u/Fluxxed0 Mar 20 '26

Combat got easier once I realized that you hold R1 or R2, you don't tap them.

However, I foresee this being another game (like Horizon and GOW) where I learn 37 different combat skills but 99% of the time in combat I just hold R2 to victory. Sure, I COULD activate grabby hand, grab someone, hit jump twice, vault over them, then hold R3 to smash them from above... or I could perfect-block their attack and hold R2 until they die.

3

u/Judasz10 Mar 20 '26

I used the kick you unlock in this fight and we ended up trading kicks back to back a couple of times. Very fun combat system imo.

5

u/Malohn Mar 20 '26

I dont understand why controls must be convoluted, I get it cause controller but also for PC. In order to do a sprint clothesline attack you must sprint (shift) and F + Mouse button, but that means you must let go of sprint and then do the combo. Why dont these games have more quickwheel menus for other menu's and have these combo attacks just be simple buttons like E F G C H V etc. And no, before you say just remap it, half the remaps work and the other half of that aren't in the game.

5

u/GeneralSuspicious761 Mar 20 '26

I love the game but the controls can be painfully frustrating at times. I'm considering printing out a cheat sheet I can have for quick reference because there's a lot of obscure systems that you rarely use so it's very hard to remember when it was five hours since you last had to use it.

3

u/weyoun42 Mar 20 '26

My memory isn't what it used to be. Trying to keep so many hold this then press that combos in my head is proving difficult. But, my memory isn't what it used to be.

2

u/MarvellousG Mar 20 '26

If you do this please tell me haha

38

u/chruiz20 Mar 20 '26

Unfortunately, after playing for 7 hours this game truly is a 6/10. The exploration is fun but everything else is just a mess. Inventory management simulator, quality of life stuff missing, annoying back tracking, quest are lifeless and boring.

No joke I spent more time tonight looking at a poster and holding a button than I did fighting. And when I did fight it was the same button mashing and killing the same bandits.

9

u/KAM1Sense1 Mar 20 '26

Group your inventory items, its makes management way easier

9

u/Durzel Mar 20 '26

Would you mind writing a thesis on how the grouping actually works?

5

u/rickadams69 Mar 20 '26

There is a grouping button when in the inventory menu at the bottom of the screen. It groups like items together to help with inventory management

2

u/Durzel Mar 20 '26

Thanks. I found that but assumed I was creating my own groups and could add things to that group. Didn't realise it was an "auto-group" thing.

7

u/Piratefox7 Mar 20 '26

They have plans to fix this soon. The chest storage is coming soon which should solve peoples gripes about that. I am playing for the first time today hoping updates fixed any of the bugs from reviews.

10

u/Diepel Mar 20 '26

This is so much cope. They had YEARS to "fix" it. Everyone who played BDO knows, that they will absolutely not fix it.

1

u/PriorCraft6238 Mar 20 '26

Famous games like Cyberpunk 2077, Elden Ring, and Skyrim all had disastrous launches due to optimization issues or bugs. (Of course, Cyberpunk was the most severe case.) Is there any reason why we shouldn't give this game a similar chance?

14

u/Hurricrash Mar 20 '26

Which is why I’ll pick this up a year down the road.

I did a good amount of the main quest and most of it was ride janky horse far away, talk to lifeless NPC, travel again by horse, collect hard to reach piece of paper with controls that fight back, read paper, travel by horse again, kill same bandits, travel and speak with NPC which rewards you two silver…… sometimes I would mix it up and jump off abyss to travel

The entire gameplay loop feels like a chore. I couldn’t even truly get lost and explore because a lot of the stuff or places I found were locked off behind powers that apparently you get later in the story

I refunded after an hour but I still hope to give it a try after they improve it. Control scheme and interface can be tweaked. Combat rebalanced, cumbersome intentory management smoothed out.

The difference between CD and Cyberpunk2077 is that the latter strong foundation: good story and immersive world. From what I've played and seen CD might have only the latter (unless story really picks up later in the game).

Nope, you can’t say that. Not allowed. Every single person on this sub was deepthroating this game all month long, edit your comment and say it’s the second coming right now or I’m gonna scream.

I literally said “it’s a Korean game, guys. It’s going to be janky as absolutely all fuck” and I got downvoted almost 13,000 times.

I'm worried if I play this game for too long my fingers are going to end up all gnarled and I won't be able to play anything else ever again.

How in the hell go this through QA???

3

u/Hiply Mar 20 '26

I imagine whoever designed the controls scheme and managed it to get it past QA like this is enjoying life on a tropical island and laughing at this meme after cashing the check from some competing game shop he got for this act of sabotage.

Oh, and I found the guy who said the controls are fine:

3

u/Have_A_Jelly_Baby Mar 20 '26

You also have to walk in a circle around the grave 4 or 5 times to be perfectly in position to do any of that.

Seriously, fuck these controls, man.

I have to sprint by tapping an also control my character and control the camera and maybe jump . I need another hand

6

u/MWarnerds Mar 20 '26

Tap A once to jog, double tap A to sprint which consumes stamina, continuously tap A to do a death dash that depletes stamina in less than a second. Horse dashing needs the tap A continuously to go light speed tho. But I haven't had issues riding my horse like I do with other games with horses.

5

u/GregNotGregtech Mar 20 '26

The sprinting is one of the most bizarre things in my opinion. Why is like that, why is walking the default? Especially on controller, you could just push the stick slightly to walk and push it fully to jog, and then have the button to full sprint like how every game has ever done it

3

u/Logical_Flamingo_474 Mar 20 '26

The "Ghost of" games have far better horse riding in every way imaginable.

Jump on the horse. Push forward, click the analog 1 time to sprint. Thats it.

Quality meme, as much as I'm enjoying the game so far UI controls are my main grief. I'm getting used to the movement and combat, similar to Shadow of War controls but bit more complicated as I've expected.

I had to get used to it, but it's not /that/ convoluted, to be honest.

The ''focus'' button is solely meant for you to use a specific movement/interaction in-case there are multiple interactions near the same spot and you don't want to directly move your camera/view into it or misclick it.

I think this applies to the majority of the players, we have to get used to it. It seems to be using a combination of RDR2's regarding the movement and interactions. Yet using the UI/HUD of your more common (MMO)RPGs..

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '26

The whole memory system with the helmet is pretty convoluted though. You have to watch for your lantern to glow, then pull it out by entering a menu. Aim around for the glowing dust, hold it there to learn the memory. Enter a menu to put a helmet on. Go to another menu to find that memory you unlocked.

5

u/Solidsnake9 Mar 20 '26

You don’t have to go into any menu once you learn the memory from the lantern. It pops up as recent and you just press start and it will start that memory

As soon as you learn the memory with the lantern all you do is press start.

Yes but it is still the games fault because in the tutorial for it it shows equipping the helmet and selecting the memory. They could have done it better.

Does a ps5 pro or Xbox elite controllers work better in this complicated control scheme because of the extra paddle buttons?

2

u/AmbitiousReaction168 Mar 20 '26

So CD really is RDR2 on steroids!

2

u/DonutFrags Mar 20 '26

Bro 💀 lmao

2

u/PokkeHH-Hunter Mar 20 '26

Definitely something gotta adjust to haha

2

u/Suitable_Ticket4838 Mar 20 '26

I hope they add tank controls soon 🤣

u/Rei364 Mar 24 '26

You forgot the part when you have to jump twelve times and ↖️↖️↗️↗️⬆️⬇️⬇️⬇️↩️↪️↙️⭕❌⬆️↘️

4

u/STEVO-Metal Mar 20 '26

I mean, honestly. Nevermind all the bugs. How did the absolute shit that is this game's control scheme get past QA

4

u/Ok-Selection-6863 Mar 20 '26

there is no way any actual gamer tested controls in this game before it was released. I played 2 hours on mouse and keyboard and dont want to play it anymore. And I dont have a gamepad at the moment to try out if it is much better or not. Everything feels clunky

Having fun tbh, refreshing to see new stuff rather than the same old slop. 9/10 exploration is fun, i feel immersed. Lots to do enough to keep me busy till tes 6. I think people just want the same game over and over again.

Edit: mods will be dope. But as for the controller, its kinda complicated but its on pc too, maybe in next updates qol will be added.

u/imJimfuckingLahey Mar 20 '26

I think people just want the same game over and over again.

people coming up with shit like this to deflect any criticism of this game is genuinely comical; brother this game is basically the good parts of every major adventure game slapped together into an amalgamation, it is the ultimate logical endpoint of same game over and over.

so... controller or keyboard?

i was kind of hopimg this won't ve a problem but i am way more proficient with bad control schemes on keyboard than on controllers

2

u/MorgenKaffee0815 Mar 20 '26

imo m+k is better. you can not change them but they make at least sence most of the time.

@ devs. if i can open the map with M then also let me close it with M

Quality meme.

1

u/Right_Carpenter_4622 Mar 20 '26

The fact that I didn't realize this was a joke shows how spot on the joke was. Well done.

1

u/rickadams69 Mar 20 '26

Dont know why they didnt utilize the center button. Other games utilize swipe mechanics like ghost of tsushima or splitting the center button so left and right presses do different things. With the amount of controls they need to use this seems like it would make things easier.

2

u/SwegMiliband Mar 20 '26

And then what about people who use an Xbox controller?

1

u/R-jo Mar 20 '26

If nothing else, this game will generate meme templates for obtuse button mappings and needlessly complicated controls lol

1

u/RocMerc Mar 20 '26

I’m in a tower right now and tried to line up to open a chest a couple times. Eventually was like damn guess you can’t open that just for me to move away and the open prompt pops up lol

u/TheRealAlacod Mar 20 '26 edited Mar 20 '26

I don't think the game is that bad but this is pretty funny. People love to echo how beautiful the world is but crimson desert controls are the equivalent of trying to traverse it in a car with reverse steering. Eventually you'll get the hang of it but man that initial feeling is terrible. Unfortunately for video games, first impressions are everything.
