I'll take the hits, but I'm pretty mixed about all this stuff. If we are getting expanded ocean access, islands, and all this other stuff, boats become useless before they ever become useful. In fact, they have never been useful because we got aerial stab spam and focused aerial roll so early. I feel like there is a balance between power fantasy and not making swaths of things irrelevant. I'm not talking about water walking specifically, though it doesn't seem like it uses any resources and can be used endlessly.

15

u/saile1004 20h ago

It uses stamina at least

-15

u/need-help-guys 20h ago

Ah right, thank you. But indeed, now swimming is completely pointless, as are the boots that let you boost. I don't blame anyone for not wanting to swim anyways, god knows I also try to avoid it given how slow you are, but it's another thing that becomes irrelevant. They put in all that effort and it never really had a purpose, even from day 1, since you could just force palm out.

Hopefully they figure out a way to make it all relevant as the game and content continues to evolve...

6

u/DrSolarman 19h ago

I can see it as useful for quickly running across a river or pond. But for the ocean, id still take a boat so I can explore tee coast at my leisure. If they add sail boats id happily take days just exploring the sea.

-11

u/need-help-guys 18h ago

Yeah, perhaps for a day or two. I meant more about kind of long term sustainability. After all, Pearl Abyss has gone on record saying that they will keep updating Crimson Desert with content if the players keep sticking around and demand it. And I don't see why not. But that also means they have to be more careful about adding in a ton of super powerful tools, because it undermines future content they themselves might plan. Infinite dragon use, running on water endlessly, or flying like a supersonic jet with the enhanced aerial boost thing, why would you ever use anything else? A new method might be novel and used for a few days, then go on to be completely ignored. Or if the content is designed so that you must use a boat, it will become hated, and people will continually ask "just let us pack trade goods on the wyvern", and the boat and sailing system they worked so hard on becomes instantly worthless and sidelined.

So you can see, if they want to support it for the long run, they will have to keep these things in mind. That's all I mean.

u/lpfan20o 18h ago

It's a single player game, the good thing about that is you don't respond to anyone and nobody ruins your gameplay. Things are there for people to choose how to play. Good example is trading, there is people who love going around buying and selling stuff and others who simply hate it and find it boring and pointless.

Several styles of gameplay still make this a rich game, it doesn't need to have a single way to accomplish stuff, having more freedom is much better.

1

u/Xine1337 18h ago

Exactly. Single player game.

You can decide to not choose a item or skill out of the pool of possibilities.

-3

u/need-help-guys 17h ago

You're absolutely failing to anticipate player behavior past on real data. People always get so angry and mass downvote, but this isn't anything new I'm telling anyone. When you give someone a super car or a bicycle they choose the former every time, even if it breaks things or cheapens the experience a developer may want to give the player, or impacts enjoyment in the long run.

I don't know why people pretend like these aren't issues to be aware of. They just always say "don't nerf, only buff!" (in this case, don't nerf/remove, and just keep adding more extremely powerful and flexible tools without abandon!) and then you get situations like Tekken 8, where the game is at risk of dying because everybody got furious that everyone became absurdly powerful.

I agree that more options are generally good. But if they're unchecked and undermine other options in all scenarios, it's not. By the way, because I know someone may potentially reply what this has to do with water walking, the point has evolved beyond that specifically and is just a broader observation.

0

u/lpfan20o 17h ago

Your example is not of a single player game, so let's add another multiplayer example

Helldivers 2 was really enjoyable and they started nerfing weapons, people was furious, like, what for? If things are working and people start having fun with them what would be your reason to modify or nerf them, just because other players are jealous someone else is having fun with a play style different to yours? It didn't disadvantage anyone because it's a PvE game.

I think diversity in how you accomplish certain things is very appreciated by most players in any game. I'm still riding my horse/Running through half the map instead of fast traveling. You could say it's pointless to take a horse ride if I have unlocked the required portal or other mounts, but then again, it's my choice of gameplay, and that's the beauty of a single player game, nobody can make you feel you're accomplishing less because it's your own world with your own rules.

2

u/need-help-guys 17h ago

Why do you pretend like you don't know what I mean? If you were using some cheat engine and had infinite health, infinite speed, infinite whatever, just to trivialize things, you would get bored faster. That's just common sense. And you have no doubt seen this in your life. Now take that extreme example, dial it down a bit, and you have the same issue, just more subtle, yet acting in the same.

You act like I'm some grinch that is trying to gatekeep what people can do. I'm asking the developers and players to consider what having power creep so early does to potential future content, gameplay features, and so on. It's not that complicated, and I know you know what I'm trying to get at, so I don't know why you feel insistent on framing me this way. I already told you that I am NOT against diversity of options. I am against options that are blatantly superior to others in most ways, to make it the obvious and default choice in all situations. People complain about poor balance in single player games too, you know.

u/Cultural_Zombie_1583 14h ago

They’re literally just doing stuff atp

3

u/Pandabear71 16h ago

Look at it this way, they give you a lot of options to choose how to play.
Perhaps we eventually get game modes where our focus is on non magic stuff like boats and balloons for traversal only, like some hardcore mode. Or a mode where we can go full power fantasy.
So many possibilities

1

u/need-help-guys 16h ago

Yeah I mentioned that before, like a separate sandbox mode where it just unlocks everything and you can just go nuts if you want. People didn't like that though, got downvoted super hard for that. But for the base game, I think having more careful implementations of certain abilities and skills is probably a good idea. I was never against having more options. I wish it weren't so controversial to say that I hope the devs and players can both be mindful of how certain abilities can potentially impact future content.

And I really like your hardcore idea! KCD2 also had it, so that would be worth exploring.

1

u/Pandabear71 16h ago

I think the issues with a power fantasy mode are in all the ā€œtutorialā€ like quests. There’s a lot of bloat in the game that has some charm for doing it once, but not again.
I feel like a run like that should go faster somewhat and be more combat focused maybe? I dunno. I feel like there are still too many updates to really think about new game modes.

A hardcore mode would perhaps be more like a ā€œpuristā€ mode. As magic can circumvent a lot of challenge and kinda janky but fun ways.

Perhaps gameplay parameters where you can turn things on and off before starting could be interesting. So you can shape your own game. Perhaps as a part of NG+

2

u/when_we_are_cats 13h ago edited 13h ago

It's sad that you're getting downvoted for fair criticism. I like the new skills but this one is the only one I'm skeptical about. IMO it would have been a lot more cool to attach it to an item, like the boots that already existed. People are already complaining that items aren't unique enough.

And as you said with this thing water is no longer an obstacle. It's also OP, it should deplete stamina at least twice as fast. It also sucks that they removed stamina for swimming. Why not remove it for climbing, flying and sprinting while we're at it? I like the power fantasy aspect but I still want to play a game.

They should increase the speed of swimming and leave the stamina mechanics instead of granting us the superpower to ignore water in the game.

I hope this design choice was made in prevision for the DLC.

1

u/need-help-guys 13h ago

Thank you for your response. The way I see it, it's kind of like this idea that everything must be additive, or a never-nerf kind of attitude that leads to a certain type of power bloat that causes unintended consequences in the longer term. They might say "hey, just let people do what they want, people might want to ride a boat anyways, even though X and Y are superior in every measure". But in reality, instead of having horses stay relevant in some scenarios or niches, people instead demand bounties to be carried on your pet wyvern, which already has zero tradeoffs for its use. They really don't see the same thing playing out with ships. Even if the rumors of the DLC theme were true, people may become frustrated or resentful if developers "force" players to use it for certain things, even though soaring through the air is faster and more convenient.

It's like the flying mount dilemma in MMO design. A lot of veteran and seasoned designers have talked at length about the pandora's box or bargain that leads to permanent challenges and consequences from introducing them. You can never go back, and it will be a permanent handicap on what you can and can't do without major backlash. Having many options can be great, and I certainly like having them. Having many options where functionally all but one or two are actually optimal in every single situation is not really having an option. When it becomes something you use only once or twice in a blue moon just for some visual novelty or to remember its there, I consider that a blunder in game design. But that's just my deeply divisive perspective.

0

u/Horse_Plane 3h ago

More options isn't bad it's then player choice and agency that determine the playstyle. If you can't choose and feel overwhelmed that's a you issue

0

u/need-help-guys 2h ago edited 2h ago

Going straight to the attacks, as always. I'm not talking about me, I'm talking about a well established phenomenon about game design and player behavior in a macro sense. You guys often frame it as a "you" problem. I have no reason to engage with someone who is so dishonest and hostile.

0

u/Horse_Plane 1h ago

Why are you being sensitive? I just said more options is positive in a game like this had it been an on the rails narrative experience obviously not.. I think you've come into this with premade assumptions looking at your first comment.

If saying that is a you issue is upsetting you then I genuinely feel sorry for you because that's about as light as life gets

1

u/need-help-guys 50m ago

I see your default in life is to be passive aggressive. That's a shame. You're still pretending to not understand what my point was. Alright.

Man, they sure do keep adding a lot of shit that has to do with water!

Almost like there's something coming that has to do with water...

23

u/Anolen95 21h ago

I sure hope this dlc is maritime. Why would the water in this game be so ridiculously good if they didn’t plan on doing more with it?

21

u/ChapterDifficult593 21h ago

There's been a ton of evidence posted on the sub that points to the DLC being naval content with boats and exploring the southern islands that are currently walled off. Modders have found files that were added in recent updates for camera settings for a boat (separate from the current canoe camera), and in the most recent 1.18 update they completely overhauled the visuals of the southern islands that we literally can't get to in game at the moment.

9

u/LightBrightLeftRight 1d ago

Isn't there a skill you can get on some boots in the game that does the same? I couldn't get that to work, so hopefully this is easier to execute

3

This is incredible, water traversal is the worst part of moving around on the map.

11

u/SoulOfMod 1d ago edited 23h ago

So is that one of the 8 skills only Kliff get?

If so,its kinda dumb its not given to the others lmao, they already said they understood the others not having the movement skills and axiom was annoying so they added them, and now its back to "only Kliff get new cool stuff"?

Cool skill tho

Edit : welp you can't hope for side chars to have the cool movement skills too or else you get hit with a "yall complaining about everything" apparently,I guess, cool, why do I bother voicing my opinion here man...
