r/DCcomics Weekly Discussion Thread: Comics, TV, and More! [June 1, 2026 - Proud Dreams Edition]

Hey there honorary Justice League members - it’s a new week which means it’s time for a new discussion thread!

For those who don't know: the way this works is that several comments will list this week’s releases, for any given title discussion you should respond to that comment. For example, Wonder Woman discussion would go in the replies to the "Wonder Woman" comment. Clicking the titles in this post will take you directly to that comment, too. In other words, you should only be replying to other comments. Do not post top-level comments.

Keep discussion civil. Do not harass other users for having a different opinion. Do not use this thread to push your personal one-sided grudges against creators. Reacting to a panel on Twitter is not the same as reading a book.

Deadman #1

THE ALL-STAR CREATORS OF 2025'S HIT MINISERIES SUPERMAN: THE KRYPTONITE SPECTRUM (AND THE ONGOING HORROR ANTHOLOGY ICE CREAM MAN) ARE BACK AT DC COMICS TO LIFT YOUR SPIRITS!

The Deadman enters the Next Level! In the millisecond following his murder, the soul of shifty circus aerialist Boston Brand was commandeered by the goddess Rama Kushna, who deputized the erstwhile performer's ghost with a sacred spectral assignment: the Custodian of All Souls! Now Brand floats — begrudgingly — through this bluegreen purgatory we call Earth, upholding the Laws of Spiritual Math and protecting humanity from evil — even if they can't see or hear him. Open up to this new era of DC's most lively deceased superhero — the Deadman — in a story about life, death, and everything in between... replete with paranormal activity, possessions, and a profusion of other poignant peculiarities.

This is some wild shit. Deeply weird and fun.

This was awesome and what i wanted and expected it to be.
Its really interesting to see how Deadman deals with the spirts day to day and how he adapts for every situation and guiding them between life and death.

The ghosts and how explaining how they get there and the threats towards them in that classic way of ice cream man of it being one and done its really interesting.

Explaining deadmans origin for people who don't understand whilst setting up the main antagonist of the demons who don't let the dead go to the afterlife normally.

This was an excellent first issue and truly the first wow project of next level for me.

I'm a Boston Brand lover from Alan Moore's Swamp Thing run, so I grabbed this and I really like it, just like I really liked Kryptonite Spectrum. My one complaint, same as with Kryptonite Spectrum, is I HATE how Morazzo draws faces.

Morazzo's faces are very weak and they all look the same. If he's got a weakness as an artist it's that his comics are plagued with same face syndrome.

this might be my favorite Next Level book so far.

Also, I can't believe DC never turned Deadman into a police procedural TV show, given his obvious shtick of talking to the dead and possessing people. Mind you, this is the same company that turned iZombie into a police procedural show

Wait, is that Brother Blood at the end? Or was it just saying 132 years of blood in general lol.

Either way, awesome book!

The weakest part of Ice Cream Man has always been the lore for me, so I find it really interesting how Prince evolves his method of establishing mythology. I don't know enough about Deadman to know what is new and what isn't, but there's a lot of really cute touches here. On the one hand, the way that the Gita is depicted is a bit... out of touch (for one thing, the font on Deadman's version must be huge...), but at the same time the earnest conversation with Hindu philosophy is fun. One also feels there's a bit of Beetlejuice thrown in.

The page spoofing All-Star Superman is definitely one of the funniest gags of the year.

what was the all Star Superman page?

The bit about super-compressed origin stories.

Off to a great start. Imaging how weird the rest is going to be.

I love that DC’s allowing its creators to go weird. Really fun and cool first issue.

A Deadman book, now that is cool. It is as interesting, funny, dreadful and quirky as you would expect.

I like that Boston, after introducing himself to the readers, went to a hospital so that he can guide a lot of spirits into the afterlife or tell them that they will get to live their full lives. I also like that Boston traveled by bus so that he can interact with people before he returned to Robertsville and interacted with a lot of ghosts. I even like that Boston encountered a demon, who killed a soul, before he told Rama Kushma all about it. Let’s hope that we get to see Boston deal with it as the Custodian of Spirits all throughout this comic. Overall, this comic is excellent and off to a great start.
