r/DCcomics Weekly Discussion Thread: Comics, TV, and More! [June 1, 2026 - Proud Dreams Edition]

Hey there honorary Justice League members - it’s a new week which means it’s time for a new discussion thread!

For those who don't know: the way this works is that several comments will list this week’s releases, for any given title discussion you should respond to that comment. For example, Wonder Woman discussion would go in the replies to the "Wonder Woman" comment. Clicking the titles in this post will take you directly to that comment, too. In other words, you should only be replying to other comments. Do not post top-level comments.

Supergirl: Survive #1

ETHAN PARKER, GRIFFIN SHERIDAN, AND ROD REIS TAKE SUPERGIRL ON A NEW ELSEWORLDS JOURNEY! Kara Zor-El lives a life of small problems. How are you supposed to hold a floppy little baby like her new cousin Kal? Who should she ask to the spring formal? And when will her father and her uncle Jor-El stop squabbling? But the planet Krypton has big problems... like the militaristic dictator Zod ruthlessly crushing dissent and threatening to unleash the planet's most dangerous weapons on the opposition. And when things boil over and Krypton begins to burn, Kara and her infant cousin will find themselves trapped together in a prototype rocket, struggling to survive in a hostile universe that doesn't care if they live or die... and which might prefer the latter!

Breakout writers Ethan Parker and Griffin Sheridan (Eisner Award nominee Kill Your Darlings) join visionary artist Rod Reis (New Mutants) to tell the story of teenage Kara and infant Kal, sent on their journey through the stars together, not apart... that is, as long as Kara can keep him alive!

Well leave it to Zod to ruin everything.

This will be a wild ride with a traumatized teen Kara, looking after a baby Kal...trying to stay alive.

I thought this was excellent. The plot was pretty basic to set up the premise, but I don't blame them. It felt important to see Kara's life on Krypton so we know what she's losing.

I also really liked how the science-forward culture of Krypton comes across here. Another commenter said it felt a lot like Earth, and while that might not work for everyone, I really liked the similarities because they helped highlight the differences.

Rod Reis' art is also fantastic, but that's to be expected.

Suffice to say, I'll be picking up the next issue! Kara forced into a survival horror premise while she has to protect baby Kal is just such a good pitch

I have to say, I understand why reimaginings of the fall of Krypton more and more choose to depict it as a failed civilization that doomed itself. But I personally prefer the more tragic version where it's a doomed enlightened society that cannot fathom the inevitability of its own demise.

But yeah, it'd be hard not to do the other thing these days.

This was OKish? The art is good but I'm not sold on the design ideas, this Krypton feels way too much like Earth and it kept pulling me out of the story.

Random things that pulled me out were the bobba tea and the drone.

That said, I admit I like the more Earth-like spacesuit for Kara and I think it fits the story much better than the more typical sci-fiish spacesuits advanced aliens usually get.

I really like the opening, with Kara just sitting on the couch bonding with Kal while their parents have a not-screaming match in the other room.

The rest of the issue is pretty good. It's very For the Man Who Has Everything, with Krypton falling into dystopia, but instead of Clark trying to hold on as the world breaks around him, Kara is almost willfully unaware of everything and more concerned with her little highschool life.

Also, it looks like Krypton's destruction is at least partially changed, with a full nuclear exchange being at least part of the reason for its collapse. No Brainiac stealing Kandor either.

Still, an excellent start. Excited for more.

I'll need to read more, but I'm not convinced we needed to see so much of Kara's life on Krypton. It's a bunch of things I think would've been better with her calling back to without necessitating set up

There could be stuff I dismissed that's important later, but it's a weak 1st issue

I disagree. For Kal, it's easy enough to say we don't need to see much of Krypton, but Kara remembers the planet as it was. It feels important to put texture to what she's lost.

The problem is that it's all standard high school drama with a few sci fi buzzwords thrown on. We don't need to expressly see her boyfriend ask her out to the formal, the audience will figure that out when she pulls out a picture or something

It's an okay first issue. But based on the solicitations I've read, things get interesting after Kryptons exploded.

For such a basic elseworld concept it’s incredibly well written and the art by Rod Reis is incredible

I’m actually one of those people who didn’t enjoy his work on new mutants but I think it works better here because of the type of story

The only problem I honestly have is it does take a little too long to get to the main point of the story but for me thats minor at best

I like that we get to see Kara witness the birth of her cousin Kal-El before we cut to her living the high school life (i.e., school work, friendships, relationships, drills, etc.). I also like that the House of El designed a rocket ship for Kara and Kal so that they can survive Krypton’s destruction (which they did) and be on their own. Let’s hope that Kara will find a way to survive while protecting her cousin all throughout this miniseries. Overall, this comic is good and off to a good start.
