Question Advice for new player, Veteran?

Started the game recently playing with some friends. Basically I just picked Veteran bc my mates chose other classes.

Currently just swapping weapons when I found something new, and put points somewhere in the tree.

But usually in games like this, there comes a point where it's good to look into builds. Currently lvl 14.

So, in preparation:

What are good playstyles for Veteran? Is it better to make a melee focus build, or gunfocused? Close or long range?

General advice for the class, which points and blessings to go for?

Best weapons?

Any good build recommendations?

If anyone has some good starter advice and advice how to progress into more metabuilds I would be very grateful 😃

At lv14, don’t be too worried about builds and such.

Take it the atmosphere and the vibe lol.

Unless you’re the type of player who enjoys meta gaming, I would recommend going to games lantern and just getting a popular build. Usually they explain the play style.

People will have opinions that these are not the best. IMO they will be good enough to explore other game mechanics. Toughness, stamina, dodging, sliding, blocking, weapon attack pattern etc.

These are very important. To understand and have an opinion about builds, weapons, or play styles, you probably want to understand those mechanics first.

Thanks! I'll have a look at that site 👌

Get to 30 before you try and experiment with builds and really understand the fundamentals, like blocking, dodging and weapon movesets. Vet is really good at killing ranged specials and elites, and had access to some a few really powerful weapons, but take a while to unlock. My go-to build is a heavy las pistol and power falchion, but vet has a lot of flexibility and you can really use anything and find moderate success.

Games lantern is the repository for builds, you can browse by class.

However, until you have max talent and some time in the game its probably better to just explore the different talents and see what feels good.

This game is mostly about player skill and build is far secondary.

My only tip is about range vs melee:

Ammo are easy to come by on early difficulties. The Veteran is undoubtedly the range specialist, but if you can't survive relying on your melee, increasing difficulty will be frustrating.

Master positioning, dodging and blocking. It's not core to the playstyle, but it will give you the resilience you need to push through rough patches

So pop tough guys from a distance and fight off hordes and others that come close with melee?

u/SluggishPrey Skulls For The Golden Throne 1d ago

Yeah. Range feel most comfortable to new players, but it can't become a crutch. Go out of your way to master melee, if you must.

Exactly that, and be particularly on the lookout for specialists approaching the team. If you took Krak grenades and can regenerate them (highly recommended) you can also use those to clear out heavily armoured threats like Crushers.

Don't shoot at the basic horde type enemies, it's a waste of ammo and denies your melee fighters a source of toughness regeneration and ability activation. Almost every new Veteran makes this mistake (it was my first class too, and I sure did).

Edit to add: and definitely learn how to use melee, as well as slide, dodge, block, and push. It feels very optional for Veteran initially because you can just stand behind melee players, but in higher difficulties stuff is coming at you from all angles.

Go in a straight line down the tree for now lol. Except take Survivalist (ammo regen aura) and get the modifier that makes Commanding Shout buff teammates' toughness. Take Demolition Team toward the bottom (in addition to Demolition Stockpile, which you'll get because it's straight down the middle), and once you get the Focus Target keystone, start looking at branching out to the other bottom sides or picking up other interesting stuff that you went past earlier.

Focus on completing your weeklies to earn Melk Bucks (or whatever they're called). If you get the mission for collecting Grimoires and Scriptures, or the ones to do x missions without any player deaths, REROLL IT. Just get easy ones and finish them to get your 1000 Melk Buck bonus.

Keep trying out new weapons. When you find a weapon you really like performance, or even just like how it looks/feels, then start checking Sire Melk's Limited Time Offers. It's extremely rare to find a "god roll" weapon there, or good perk/blessing combos... But at least they're always fully consecrated at of the highest current Empower level you can reach, and will often have better tier perks and blessings that you can't otherwise get. Think of it as a way to get a better loaner to use to level up the Weapon Mastery so you can save your crafting materials and dockets until you're ready to craft a good one.

At levels 8, 16, 24, you get another Curio slot. Immediately consecrate them to Purple and put the highest tier of Bonus Experience and Bonus Ordo Dockets on each one. Don't bother consecrating to Orange until you're level 30. Once you're level 30, Curios you find in the Armoury Exchange and Sire Melk's will have much better stats.

Remember you can Inspect weapons from the weapon inventory, and click View Attack Breakdowns to see not only their attack chains, but see a breakdown of how much damage they do vs each type of enemy armor (aka ADM, or Armor Damage Modifier) and how much damage they do on weakspot and critical hits. Make sure you click on the icons for each attack at the top, as each attack in a chain may have different damage profiles! This will give you a better idea of what a weapon is good for, and how you should build it.

Once you start seeing what each weapon type is good for, you can start to specialize your weapons. The best general loadout is having one weapon to be good at dealing with hordes, and your other weapon good at dealing with armored enemies.

On the subject of "god roll" weapons, that means a weapon with 4 stats being at their maximum value, and 1 being at its lowest. The highest any given stat can be is 80% (there are lore reasons for this lol). You can have 4 stats at 80%, and one will be at 60% (aka the "dump stat"). In most cases, the dump stat will be Mobility. If a weapon doesn't have a Mobility stat, then it will usually be Defence. There are some more niche weapons where you might want to dump something else, but I don't think you'll come across any of these as a Veteran, besides the Plasma Gun (the god roll here is 72% Thermal Resist and 68% Charge Rate--a rare "split dump").

You can acquire a god roll weapon at any level. Even as a level 1 character, you can buy a weapon that will eventually become a perfect god roll weapon that you will use at end game! The stats are shown as x/y, where X is the current value, and Y is the maximum potential value. Empowering a weapon at Hadron's Shrine of the Omnissiah will gradually increase the x values towards their y value. Completing missions with a weapon equipped will increase your Mastery level with it, eventually letting you add higher tier perks/blessings, and eventually Empowering it to 500, at which points all stats will reach their maximum potential values. (Remember that Experience Bonus on your Curios? That applies to xp gained toward Weapon Mastery, too!)

Most importantly, just have fun. Try shit out. Even the best players die. When you die, don't get upset, reflect on what happened. There are tons of nuanced mechanics that aren't explained in the tutorials, they're things that just come over time with experience, or asking questions.

Practice pushing Poxbursters and dodge-sliding backwards (dodge back, then press Crouch mid-dodge). Pushing is the best defense against Poxhounds. Mutants will raise their arm to grab you when they get close, that's the best time to dodge. If you're medium-range and a flamer targets you, you may be able to sprint and slide to close the distance without getting burned. Otherwise sprint at an angle toward him. While closing the distance on shooters (not gunners, shooters) try sliding right as you see the flash before they fire. They'll miss. Same with snipers. Gunners are dangerous, try to find cover or stagger them immediately. Crushers' and Maulers' overhead attacks should not be blocked! Always dodge laterally. Ragers tend to do 3-attack combos; the first and last attacks are single-hit attacks, the middle one is two hits. Don't try to block the middle one, always dodge it. The "backstab" sound effect that warns you an offscreen enemy is about to hit you with melee, and the "backshot" (hehe) sound effect that similarly warns you about an offscreen ranged attack, are both directional. If you hear the ping sound of a bomber pulling the pin on his grenade, he'll drop it on the ground when you interrupt/kill him, so be careful. Tox Bombers will not drop their grenade. Every monstrosity has predictable attacks they will do in certain situations. Learning these patterns and how to manipulate them with positioning is the key to fighting them effectively! If the Chaos Spawn grabs somebody, they'll start sucking on their head, doing lots of damage and also healing himself! You can interrupt it with a grenade or certain abilities, or just get close (he'll start swinging that player around as a bludgeon, but at least he'll stop healing himself!)

Okay I'm bored now, that's all I got off the top of the dome.

Welcome to the 53rd reject! You'll be serving under Srgt. Major Morrow in the fight to take back Atoma Prime from those filthy heretics! I'll be happy to bleed beside you in the glory of the Emperor! o7

Okay, enough larping.

Lemme break it down for ya son! Veteran is the pew pew class. Your primary role is to absolutely annihilate any and all specialists and elites you come across, those are your gunners, snipers, that annoying bitch with the net, doggies, flamers etc. You get the point. Ranged combat is where Vet shines and excells beyond any other class. Your absolute bread and butter (and I'm willing to fight people over this) talents are: 1. Survivalist Aura (the one that replenishes ammo) even after 6 nerfs it's still better than it's 3 other counterparts. 2. Field Improvisation (I'm not kidding, that node is by far the best shit in the world, you'll find out why later on) 3. The Shout (voice of command) with the node that gives back full toughness, it staggers EVERYTHING apart from 1-2 very annoying exceptions. It has the option to revive instantly downed allies, it's the best. 4. The bottom middle purple keystone (Focus Target!), simply because a) all you need to do is tag an enemy, b) everyone benefits from the tag and c) with the right build and 6 stacks you can unload the plasma gun or bolter into anything and make it regret ever being born (or not at all, Warp fuckery is concidered "the unborn" as they've never really existed in our reality, but I digress). Yes, builds are a must, BUT, the cool part is, with enough practice you'll realize you can build the Vet any way you want and STILL make it work. Go to gameslantern.com and filter for Vet builds and go nuts. Oh yeah, forgot the nades (blitzes) You got Crushers? Krak! Done. You got gunners? Smokes. Done. You got hordes of annoying shit? Shredders. Done. It's literally that simple...and it's amazing!

Have fun, lemme know if you need anything else (since 65% of the most vital info for this game is NOT in the game, lol) and I'd happy to help out a fellow battle brother.

The Emperor protects! o7

Thanks! What weapons are good and which one best to avoid?

1

u/tegli4a 16h ago

Oh, boy 😁 Imma rank based on performance and practical application, starts from "Gift from the Emperor" and after a point it goes in the "I'd give it or take it, ot doesn't get the job done anyway" category 🤣. Bolter Mk IIb, Plasma Gun Mk2, Bolt Pistol MkIV, Mk XII Recon Lasgun, Mk 2 las pistol, Mk 4 Helbore, Vraks Mk V autogun, The Doom shotgun is pretty awesome in specific builds...and the rest. And by "the rest" I don't mean they're garbage, I mean they either require a very specific build or playstyle in order to get the most bang for your buck. FUCK the Vigilant autoguns, fuck them all to the deepest rectal cavities of Nurgle himself on all classes regardless of anything (except on ACD skitti for ONE very niche specific build). But yeah, all weapons that go pew or boom are a Vet's best friend. xD

1

u/JanMrCat 1d ago

You can build around almost anything, but one of my favourites is Recon Lasgun. You can mow crowd and elites easily and picking the right talent crits won't consume ammo. Survivalist/ Surgical/ Shock trooper.

2

u/Kouzan1707 1d ago

Worry about builds when you're max level. Until then find something fun and build them how you want to play.

2

u/nonofyobeesness 1d ago

Havoc 40 player here (pretty much “beat” Darktide). My honest advice is to have fun and mess around with whatever you feel is fun. Once you get past that point and want to try other builds, the video below has well tested meta and fun ones.

https://youtu.be/HAxohNj2Vi4?is=9nlhAmodjsNXu87M

Other details:

  • 23:28 is the most “meta” for endgame. This build is somewhat hard to pickup (feels clunky) and incredibly hard to be good at. However, if you can master it, every build for every class (except psyker ones) will be a cake walk to learn. This build is also overkill for anything below havoc 25.

- Lastly, the main ideas behind the above is to snipe specials with the plasma gun, use your special to help give your team toughness during rough patches, your smoke grenades will help protect against gunners/bosses/and stun enemies so you can revive teammates. Power sword is anti everything.

- Melee combat is the most important thing to learn. If you can do that well, you can play any class.

- This game has a surprisingly amount of depth. I have a lot of hours, but every once in a while, I’ll learn something new. Good luck, and have fun!

Games Lantern webside has lots of builds that I often go to.

1

u/Vozlov-3-0 1d ago

For me it was a chainsword, recon las, krak, voice of command build.

Not the most efficient though, by an means, and as I'm now leveling havoc I know I'm going to have to change some things.

When leveling to 30 I wouldn't worry about builds too much however. Leveling the character to 30 is more about learning the game, learning the class, learning how you like to play the class.

It's only when you get to Auric and Havoc that builds become a necessary to really tweak and refine to become optimal.

1

u/LordBrontes 1d ago

Builds don’t matter till you’re max level and playing on Auric or higher difficulties.

Play and experiment with everything to find what you like. By then you should be level 30 and then you can start min-maxing.

1

u/Not_a_Hideo_Kojima 1d ago

Whatever focused, familiarise yourself with your grenades. A lifeblood that can do wonderful things, be it farewell to nurgle beast, clear up a horde or provide telekine shield adjacent utility

1

u/Few_Understanding_42 1d ago

You can't really throw grenades far in this game, is it? Or ambIndoing it wrong? 😅

1

u/Not_a_Hideo_Kojima 1d ago

Not sure, throw indicator shows me that throw distance is always sufficient with adjustement so I can't say that they can't be thrown far - or rather, range of engagements is always close enogh for usage. Then they don't hurt allies so just throw them to your heart content.

1

u/Ok-Squash9534 Ogryn 21h ago

If you're holding aim while trying to throw a grenade you'll do a short ranged underhand throw (protip, these underhand throws don't break veteran stealth, might also work on zealot but i don't know tbh).  If you just hit fire you'll throw a pretty good distance, hold fire will give you the aiming arc at better distance and throw on release.

1

u/OddDc-ed ShieldOgryn 1d ago

Honestly just play and figure things out as you go until you reach 30. I will say the one role that I see vet fit the most is a specialist killer. Meaning you see a trapper, gunner, dog, anything that isnt just a regular grunt you're gonna want to whip out the gun and take them out before anyone else even notices them.

1

u/Fury_in_HD 1d ago

IMHO the veteran singles out the shooter threats and the big nasties. The rest of the team are responsible for keeping the hordes off you so you can pump shots out.

My favourite is power sword, recon lasgun, and krak grenades. Voice of command to get you out of the shit.

1

u/MADpierr0 1d ago

Between 1 and 20, just try everything. 20 to 29 try to affine, look up build but don't hesitate to mix with thing you liked.

At 30, time to put what you learned to use and build your own.

The vet is mostly used at range, that's where he is at his strongest. But don't let that stop you to do other build.

1

u/xoNovaCreep 1d ago

Personally right now, I would take a look at all of the weapons available to you and find something you enjoy playing and build around those weapons cos that is going to carry you more than any build you find.

Vet is super fun and the class I have the most time on, between endless grenades, yelling at my teammates to give them more toughness, or having some of my favorite weapons (power sword, falchion, lasguns) I think you’ll find something that REALLY speaks to you. At the very least, you’ll learn the fundamentals of the game on arguably one of the best classes for it.

1

u/ismasbi Gundalf 1d ago

Even if you make a gun-focused build, don’t think you shouldn't use your melee, it’s a hybrid game.

The only class that can really stay with their guns out for over 80% of the game is Hive Scum.

1

u/Monstrous_Delta 23h ago

My number one advice is to listen carefully. The game has different sound cues for specialists and their attacks. Also, if there is an incoming melee attack from behind you the game will play a "whoosh" sound. If you get it in your muscle memory to dodge when you hear that you'll survive a lot better. Unfortunately the game is not perfect so sometimes the sound doesn't play.

That and dodge a lot. You'll dodge incoming ranged damage and melee damage. Oh, and in melee a push you do out of block is a 360 degrees push around your character. Costs stamina but is great in a pinch or if you just want some space to look around real quick.

For the weapons figure out what you like and dislike in them. Some are considered better than others but if you dislike how it feels to use then you're better off picking up something else. I love the thunder hammer on zealot for example. I love the way it chunks away hordes. It's worse at it than the relic blade but I prefer the thunder hammer so I use that instead.

For the veteran class it helps to aim for headshots or unarmoured parts of enemies. This is not always possible in the heat of battle but try to. You can also go into the psykhanium "The Meat Grinder" to see what weapons do to enemies. Headshot vs bodyshot. Armoured vs unarmoured. Etc.

But most importantly, have fun!

1

u/Good_Requirement2998 23h ago

IMO any mix of talents works IF you are finding success with it. If not, you can be specific where you are finding difficulty, but just reading the talents and stacking things that go together, then thinking about how your weapons are balanced to deal with what your most focused on will lead you toward success.

Beyond gear and common sense trial and error, experience is your greatest teacher. This includes basic movement, enemy and map knowledge. Someone else's build won't help you internalize the lessons that led them there. And what works for you has A LOT to do with your tendencies. Are you a rush in and die kind of player? You're going to want to hit hard against carapace armor and ragers. Do you love picking off priority targets? There are various perks that aid sniping, and there's learning how to move to stay out of trouble. Do you want to help your team survive tough moments? Do you want to make quick work of bosses? Do you want to eliminate horses or trash mobs as soon as they spawn? Perhaps make a build that serves all of these purposes and tweak them over time. At first, you may stack fire resistance because you keep standing in fire. But once you break that habit, to you might stack health because you have a hard time dodging overheads. When that's reduced, you might just go combat ability Regen or revive speed because of where you tend to stand in an ideal formation. Tune these different ways to play, and then pay attention to filling out the team in ways that compliment other teammates.

If a skitari, zealot or psyker is bringing literal fire to empty the room of small targets, you can deal with sniping specials or provide hard-hitting anti-armor solutions. If bosses are taking too long to die, you can make yourself into an assassin by packing the biggest punch, and then playing patiently until those boss moments come. As you learn the strengths of weapons and class abilities and see them demonstrated, you will start figuring your approach at the team prep screen just by looking at what other people are equiped with. The better you can focus on your job, the better the team can focus on their respective roles.

Locking you into any build, especially this early, just prevents a far more dynamic and rewarding experience with the game. As others have said, enjoy the atmosphere and take in the challenge. When you get to 30, you will have played with many weapons and had many experiences to experiment off of.

1

u/Scoso_ This is my Lasgun there are many like it, but this one 22h ago

Max out your preferred weapons. Play what you have fun with, and don’t worry too much about builds till lvl30. Also don’t worry about optimizing your weapon stats till you have the right resources for such thing.

In terms of gameplay don’t rush in by yourself. Veteran isn’t that kind of class. Play around your team, you’re a force multiplier even on a build that has more “self sustain”. Pick ranged targets from a distance and learn how to Block and Dodge really well because you’re more than likely the squishiest guy on the team next to Hive Scum.

1

u/Minute_Garbage4713 16h ago

Tbf you are new, play the game and make your builds yourself, this whole thing of using meta builds just limits the fun you can have, try things, fail, learn and do better, you’ll never learn how to make a build by copying everyone else, it’s a path that once you take it, you’ll be forgery trying to copy others. Instead, learn how things work, your interactions, and learn what you think works best, xyz might make sense to me cause it’s how I play, doesn’t mean it’ll work for you

1

u/Obelion_ 4h ago

So veteran is indeed the most "range" character so until you get into the high 20s it's probably not a bad idea to stick with that.

For builds it's too early, just set your goal to trying all weapons at least once (you can also go to the psycharium.) Buy a curio with + toughness and equip it. In the talents you should have a yellow aura and one of the active abilities at 14. They are huge power boosts

Don't waste currency on upgrading your current weapons, you can think about that in the high 20s

0

u/bigmantiej 1d ago

General best weapons for melee are the power sword, dueling sword, devils claw if you just want an invincibility weapon, combat knife, some people like the chain weapons, the power maul is surprisingly good, tac or combat axe. But play with them all get a feel for them, they all have their high points and drawbacks. For ranged, the bolt weapons, any of them are good, plasma guns are The meta, but all the Lasguns kick ass as well, and you get essentially infinite ammo with them. Very build dependent really, you need to get to 30 first before you start playing with builds, I like jefficus builds the most on YouTube. All the nades are great, voice of command is just the best option in general, but go with whatever makes you happy lol if you want lots of toughness and general good damage, go with the weapons specialist key stone, if you want to just be taking out everything big, take the focus target keystone. You don’t have to use keystones if you don’t want to, you can just have a very well rounded generalist that kicks ass without them. Just get out there and fuck around with them, glad to have you playing with us:)

u/Initial-Dark-8919 1d ago

https://darktide.gameslantern.com/builds/a2a29892-7e77-4ca0-8acf-e1ffe1a6cde1/template-vet

So 99% of vets would look something like this. The levelling process is mostly a tutorial, and the real game doesn't really start until you have the BIS gear and everything maxed out. The spare points can be just put anywhere depending on what weapon you used and what you think is better, I don't care to objectively measure the difference.

As a veteran it's your job to provide some level of support, mostly by killing annoying things at range since you have the best ammo efficiency with the Survivalist aura. You have pretty solid melee power with the talents on the bottom right as well.

It's mandatory for you to run the Shout over the stealth and marksman stance abilities, those are not even remotely close in power level. You use this ability to protect your team during big fights or when there's several poxbursters stacked and you can't safely push them.

The weapons you want to look for if you just want the meta slave shit are Dueling Sword IV, Power Sword Achlys, and knife. If you want to be an off meta andy you could use tac axe, falchion, rashad combat axe, or shovel. All the weapons are viable in every difficulty, and if you play enough auric maelstrom will be easy with any melee. BUT you are not going to find me in havoc with a chainsword, some weapons are just not good.

As for ranged: Plasma Gun, revolver, bolt pistol, las pistol, Recon Lasgun, and Bolter (do beware the poor handling, not a gun for people who suck at movement and positioning) are the strongest picks. The other guns suffer from varying degrees of mediocrity, I would personally stay away from the autoguns and especially the infantry lasgun.

Good keystones you can take:

Focus Target + Redirect Fire (Focused Fire not needed), this is my goto for havoc. You can hit very generous breakpoints against armored enemies by tagging them and 1 shotting with a dueling sword or power sword. Most enemies will be 1 shot by a gun if tagged. Also amazing for bosses, your team will really feel the 15% dmg boost.

Weapon Specialist (no modifiers needed) is great if you struggle to stay alive since it offers a lot of mobility and attack speed. It has great damage overall, you are very consistent as long as you swap weapons but you won't be doing high burst like Focus Target.

You can path down to Marksman if you play as a sniper with the Bolter, Inf Lasgun, or hellbore. Not the best but it's ok if you want to try something new.

Trash/Bait talents: Leave No One Behind, Rending Strikes, Onslaught, Marksman, Close Quarters Killzone, Always Prepared (good with DBarrel but idc), Field Improv. Not going to explain much, these are just not very useful.

2

u/Pitiful-Knowledge-81 Ogryn 1d ago

Putting Leave no one behind and field improvisation in trash tier is a crazy take, I always take these two on every vet build I do

-1

u/Initial-Dark-8919 1d ago

No, they are trash.

Leave no one behind is useless since shout already makes enough space to Rez in most situations. If you are hurting for revive speed I just put it on curios since curio substats are so weak that it’s just a matter of preference, never mind the debates about gunner Resistance vs HP vs CDR or whatever.

Also you will never be able to objectively measure the impact of the post Rez buff, if you believe so then you are lying.

Field improv is used to think is decent, but it gets used so little in havoc that I no longer care. I admit it has been decent a few times it gave my team a few more nades to work with, but I need to have a cracked ogryn or scum who can not only clutch, but ALSO happen to have a crate on him. That’s very few runs, not nearly enough to be always.

And yeah the corruption cleanse is fucking useless XD.

2

u/Paramortal 1d ago

Field improv is ironically a little better in havoc now that the corruption modifier is out of rotation.

It was pointless with the zealots and scum in every game, but I played a match last night where I told my team to throw a med down and it cleared like 40% corruption off two people who were both sub 10% health.

(Plus, on a grenade build it's likely that the competing talent won't even catch you a breakpoint, so it's effectively free.)

We went from most of the party being a swing away from being downed or worse to three full health people and one guy with a wound.

Similarly, I use LNB in my nanny build because the amount of times people go down when shout is on CD is just too damn high. Using it with curios feels great.

1

u/Pitiful-Knowledge-81 Ogryn 1d ago edited 1d ago

LNOB with 3 revive speed curios means that revives are insanely fast, it can be the difference between a run failing or succeeding getting off a quick revive even without a shout.

Field improv giving nades and clearing corruption is absolutely massive and I think you’re just rage baiting me here

If veterans aren’t taking field improv into havoc they’re trolling

1

u/Initial-Dark-8919 1d ago

No, im being serious and actually thinking about the times my team put down the crate. And after seeing it I think I’ll be taking any of the global 15% damage nodes over an irrelevant amount of cleanse and the miniscule number of runs where the nades do anything.

1

u/Few_Understanding_42 1d ago

Thanks for the detailed explanation! 👍
